There is much that you can do to protectyourself when you ride. You’ll find manyhelpful recommendations throughout thismanual. Following are a few that weconsider to be most important.
Your scooter can provide many years ofservice and pleasure if you takeresponsibility for your own safety andunderstand the challenges that you canmeet on the road.
Some drivers do not see scooters becausethey are not looking for them. To makeyourself more visible, wear bright reflectiveclothing, position yourself so other driverscan see you, signal before turning orchanging lanes, and use your horn when itwill help others notice you.
It’s a proven fact: helmets significantlyreduce the number and severity of headinjuries. So always wear an approvedmotorcycle helmet and make sure yourpassenger does the same. We alsorecommend that you wear eye protection,sturdy boots, gloves, and other protectivegear (page ).
Pushing the limits is another major cause ofscooter crashes. Never ride beyond yourpersonal abilities or faster than conditionswarrant. Remember that alcohol, drugs,fatigue and inattention can significantlyreduce your ability to make goodjudgements and ride safely.

For your safety, we strongly recommendthat you always wear an approvedmotorcycle helmet, eye protection, boots,gloves, trousers, and a long-sleeved shirt orjacket whenever you ride. Althoughcomplete protection is not possible, wearingproper gear can reduce the chance of injurywhen you ride.Following are suggestions to help youchoose proper gear.
Alcohol and riding don’t mix. Even onedrink can reduce your ability to respond tochanging conditions, and your reaction timegets worse with every additional drink. Sodon’t drink and ride, and don’t let yourfriends drink and ride either.
For safe riding, it’s important to inspectyour scooter before every ride and performall recommended maintenance. Neverexceed load limits, and only use accessoriesthat have been approved by Honda for thisscooter. See page for more details.5

Your helmet is your most important piece ofriding gear because it offers the bestprotection against head injuries. A helmetshould fit your head comfortably andsecurely. A bright-coloured helmet canmake you more noticeable in traffic, as canreflective strips.
An open-face helmet offers some protection,but a full-face helmet offers more. Alwayswear a face shield or goggles to protectyour eyes and help your vision.
In addition to a helmet and eye protection,we also recommend:
Sturdy boots with non-slip soles to helpprotect your feet and ankles.Leather gloves to keep your hands warmand help prevent blisters, cuts, burns andbruises.A motorcycle riding suit or jacket forcomfort as well as protection. Bright-coloured and reflective clothing can helpmake you more noticeable in traffic. Besure to avoid loose clothes that could getcaught on any part of your scooter.

How much weight you put on your scooter,and how you load it, are important to yoursafety. Anytime you ride with a passengeror cargo you should be aware of thefollowing information.
Your scooter has been designed to carryyou and one passenger. When you carry apassenger, you may feel some differenceduring acceleration and braking. But so longas you keep your scooter well-maintained,with good tyres and brakes, you can safelycarry loads within the given guidelines.
However, excessive weight or carrying anunbalanced load can seriously affect yourscooter’s handling, braking and stability.Non -Honda a ccessor ies , impr opermodifications, and poor maintenance canalso reduce your safety margin.
The following pages give more specificinformation on loading, accessories andmodifications.

Follow these guidelines whenever you carrya passenger or cargo:Your scooter is primarily intended for
transporting you and a passenger. You maywish to secure a jacket or other small itemsto the seat when you are not riding with apassenger.
If you wish to carry more cargo, check withyour Honda dealer for advice, and be sureto read the inf ormation regardingaccessories on page .
Improperly loading your scooter can affectits stability and handling. Even if yourscooter is properly loaded, you should rideat reduced speeds whenever carrying cargo.
To prevent loose items from creating ah a z a r d , ma k e s u r e t h e c e n t e rcompartment is closed and that any othercargo is securely tied down before youride away.Place cargo weight as close to the centerof the scooter as possible.Balance cargo weight evenly on bothsides.

We strongly recommend that you use onlyHonda Genuine Accessories that have beenspecifically designed and tested for yourscooter. Because Honda cannot test allother accessories, you must be personallyresponsible for proper selection, installationand use of non-Honda accessories. Checkwith your dealer for assistance and alwaysfollow these guidelines:
Be sure electrical equipment does notexceed the scooter’s electrical systemcapacity (page ). A blown fuse cancause a loss of lights or engine power.

Do not pull a trailer or sidecar with yourscooter. This scooter was not designedfor these attachments, and their use canseriously impair your scooter’s handling.
We strongly advise you not to remove anyoriginal equipment or modify your scooterin any way that would change its design oroperation. Such changes could seriouslyimpair your scooter’s handling, stability andbraking, making it unsafe to ride.
Removing or modifying your lights,mufflers, emission control system or otherequipment can also make your scooterillegal.

The coolant temperature gauge ( ) showscoolant temperature.
Exceeding maximum running temperaturemay cause serious engine damage.
When the needle begins to move above theC (Cold) mark ( ), the engine is warmenough for the scooter to be ridden. Thenormal operating temperature range iswithin the section between the H and Cmarks. If the needle reaches the red band( ), stop the engine and check the reservetank coolant level. Read pages anddo not ride the scooter until the problemhas been corrected.

If the oil is changed before the oil changeindicator appears, be sure to reset the oilchange indicator after changing the oil. Theindicator will appear for 2 seconds, thendisappear. This means the indicator is reset.

Press and hold the CLOCK/OIL button( ) while simultaneously turning theignition switch to ON.Continue to hold the CLOCK/OIL buttonfor more than 2 seconds. The indicatorwill disappear.

The first oil change is at 1,000 km (600miles), but in this case the indicator shouldnot be reset. The indicator will startblinking after the scooter has coveredapproximately 4,000 km (2,500 miles).Therefore, after the second engine oilchange, as described in the maintenanceschedule (page ), remember to reset theoil change indicator (page ).19

Each shock absorber ( ) has 3 adjustmentpositions for different load or ridingconditions.Use a handlebar ( ) to adjust the rearshocks.Always adjust the shock absorber positionin sequence (1-2-3 or 3-2-1).Attempting to adjust directly from 1 to 3 or3 to 1 may damage the shock absorber.Position 1 is for light loads and smooth roadconditions. Positions 2 to 3 increase springpreload for a stiffer rear suspension, andcan be used when the scooter is heavilyloaded. This scooter is equipped with a CombinedBrake System. Operating the rear brakelever applies the rear brake and a portion ofthe f ront brake. For f ull brakingeffectiveness, use both the front and rearbrake lever simultaneously, as you wouldwith a conventional scooter braking system.
As with a conventional scooter brakingsystem, excessively hard application of thebrake controls may cause wheel lock,reducing control of the scooter.
For normal braking, apply both the frontand rear brake lever to match your roadspeed. For maximum braking, close thethrottle and firmly apply the front and rearbrake lever.
Both the front and rear brakes are thehydraulic disc types.As the brake pads wear, the brake fluidlevel drops.There are no adjustments to perform, butfluid level and pad wear must be inspectedperiodically. The system must be inspectedfrequently to ensure there are no fluid leaks.If the control lever free travel becomesexcessive and the brake pads are not wornbeyond the recommended limit (page ),there is probably air in the brake systemand it must be bled. See your Honda dealerfor this service.

Front Brake Fluid Level:
The recommended brake fluid is HondaDOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid from a sealedcontainer, or an equivalent.
Other Checks:Make sure there are no fluid leaks. Checkfor deterioration or cracks in the hoses andfittings.
With the scooter in an upright position,check the fluid level. It should be above theLOWER level mark ( ). If the level is at orbelow the LOWER level mark, check thebrake pads for wear (page ).
Worn pads should be replaced. If the padsare not worn, have your brake systeminspected for leaks.

Do not use non-ethylene glycol coolant, tapwater, nor mineral water when adding orreplacing the coolant.Use of improper coolant may cause damage,such as corrosions in the engine, blockageof the cooling passage or radiator andpremature wear of the water pump seal.
Use any genuine HONDA PRE-MIXCOOLANT without diluting with water.
Use only genuine HONDA PRE-MIXCOOLANT containing corrosion inhibitors,specifically recommended for aluminumengines when adding or replacing thecoolant.Genuine HONDA PRE-MIX COOLANT isexcellent at preventing corrosion andoverheating. The effects last for up to 2years.
The coolant should be inspected andreplaced properly by following themaintenance schedule (page ).69

If the reserve tank is empty, or if coolantloss is excessive, check for leaks and seeyour Honda dealer for repair.
The reserve tank ( ) is behind the frontcover ( ).Check the coolant level in the reserve tankwhile the engine is at the normal operatingtemperature with the scooter in an uprightposition. If the coolant level is below theLOWER level mark ( ), remove the frontcover (page ) and reserve tank cap ( ),and add coolant mixture until it reaches theUPPER level mark ( ).Always add coolant to the reserve tank. Donot attempt to add coolant by removing theradiator cap.

Petrol is highly flammable andexplosive. You can be burned orseriously injured when handling fuel.
Stop the engine and keep heat,sparks, and flame away.Refuel only outdoors.Wipe up spills immediately.

If ‘‘spark knock’’ or ‘‘pinking’’ occurs at asteady engine speed under normal load,change brands of petrol. If spark knock orpinking persists, consult your Honda dealer.Failure to do so is considered misuse, anddamage caused by misuse is not covered byHonda’s Limited Warranty.
Use unleaded petrol with a research octanenumber of 91 or higher.The use of leaded petrol will causepremature damage to the catalyticconverter.
Do not overfill the tank. There should be nofuel in the filler neck ( ).After refueling, be sure to tighten the fuelfill cap firmly by turning it clockwise.Make sure that the arrow marks ( ) on thefuel fill cap and fuel tank are aligned.Close the seat.

If you decide to use a petrol containingalcohol (gasohol), be sure it’s octane ratingis at least as high as that recommended byHonda. There are two types of ‘‘gasohol’’:one containing ethanol, and the othercontaining methanol. Do not use petrol thatcontains more than 10 % ethanol. Do not usepetrol containing methanol (methyl or woodalcohol) that does not also containcosolvents and corrosion inhibitors formethanol. Never use petrol containing morethan 5 % methanol, even if it has cosolventsand corrosion inhibitors.
Before buying fuel from an unfamiliarstation, try to find out if the fuel containsalcohol. If it does, confirm the type andpercentage of alcohol used. Always check air pressure when your tyresare ‘‘cold’’ when the scooter has beenparked for at least three hours. If a tyre is punctured or damaged, youshould replace it, not repair it. As discussedbelow, a tyre that is repaired, eithertemporarily or permanently, will have lowerspeed and performance limits than a newtyre.
A temporary repair, such as an externaltubeless tyre plug, may not be safe fornormal speeds and riding conditions. If atemporary or emergency repair is made to atyre, you should ride slowly and cautiouslyto a dealer and have the tyre replaced. Ifpossible, you should not carry a passengeror cargo until a new tyre is installed.
Even if a tyre is professionally repaired witha permanent internal patch plug, it will notbe as good as a new tyre. You should notexceed 60 km/h (40 mph) for the first 24hours. In addition, you may not be able tosafely carry as much weight as with a newtyre. Therefore, we strongly recommendthat you replace a damaged tyre. Changing the oil requires a torque wrench.If you do not have it and the necessary skill,we recommend that you have your Hondadealer perform this service.
Change the engine oil with the engine atnormal operating temperature and thescooter on its center stand to assurecomplete and rapid draining.
If a torque wrench is not used for thisinstallation, see your Honda dealer as soonas possible to verify proper assembly.
Used engine oil may cause skin cancer ifrepeatedly left in contact with the skin forprolonged periods. Although this is unlikelyunless you handle used oil on a daily basis,it is still advisable to thoroughly wash yourhands with soap and water as soon as possi-ble after handling used oil.
Please dispose of used engine oil in amanner that is compatible with theenvironment. We suggest you take it in asealed container to your local recyclingcenter or service station for reclamation. Donot throw it in the trash or pour it on theground or down a drain.

Clean the plastic parts using a cloth orsponge dampened with a solution of milddetergent and water. Rub the soiled areagently rinsing it frequently with freshwater.
Avoid cleaning products that are notspecif ically designed for scooter orautomobile surfaces.They may contain harsh detergents orchemical solvents that could damage themetal, paint, and plastic on your scooter.
If your scooter is still warm from recentoperation, give the engine and exhaustsystem time to cool off.
High pressure water (or air) can damagecertain parts of the scooter.
Rinse the scooter thoroughly with coolwater to remove loose dirt.Clean the scooter with a sponge or softcloth using cool water.Avoid directing water to muffler outletsand electrical parts.

Remove the spark plug cap from thespark plug. Using tape or string, securethe cap to any convenient plastic bodypart so that it is positioned away fromthe spark plug.Remove the spark plug from theengine and store it in a safe place. Donot connect the spark plug to the sparkplug cap.Pour a tablespoon (15 20 cm ) ofclean engine oil into the cylinder andcover the spark plug hole with a pieceof cloth.Crank the engine several times todistribute the oil.Reinstall the spark plug and spark plugcap.
Remove the battery. Store in an areaprotected from freezing temperaturesand direct sunlight.Slow charge the battery once a month.Wash and dry the scooter. Wax allpainted surfaces. Coat chrome withrustinhibiting oil.Inflate the tyres to their recommendedpressures. Personal safety is your first priority after acrash. If you or anyone else has beeninjured, take time to assess the severity ofthe injuries and whether it is safe tocontinue riding. Call for emergencyassistance if needed. Also follow applicablelaws and regulations if another person orvehicle is involved in the crash.
If you decide that you are capable of ridingsafely, first evaluate the condition of yourscooter. If the engine is still running, turn itoff and look it over carefully; inspect it forfluid leaks, check the tightness of criticalnuts and bolts, and secure such parts as thehandlebar, control levers, brakes, andwheels.
If there is minor damage, or you are unsureabout possible damage, ride slowly andcautiously. Sometimes, crash damage ishidden or not immediately apparent, so youshould have your scooter thoroughlychecked at a qualified service facility assoon as possible. Also, be sure to have yourHonda dealer check the frame andsuspension after any serious crash.

The catalytic converter must operate at ahigh temperature for the chemical reactionsto take place. It can set on fire anycombustible materials that come near it.Park your scooter away from high grasses,dry leaves, or other flammables.
A defective catalytic converter contributesto air pollution, and can impair your engine’sperformance. Follow these guidelines toprotect your scooter’s catalytic converter.
Always use unleaded petrol. Even a smallamount of leaded petrol can contaminatethe catalyst metals, making the catalyticconverter ineffective.
Keep the engine in good runningcondition.A poorly running engine can cause thecatalytic converter to overheat causingdamage to the converter or the scooter.
If your engine is misfiring, backfiring,stalling, or otherwise not runningproperly, stop riding and turn off theengine. Have your scooter serviced assoon as possible.
This scooter is equipped with a catalyticconverter.The catalytic converter contains preciousmetals that serve as catalysts, promotingchemical reactions to convert the exhaustgasses without affecting the metals.The catalytic converter acts on HC, CO, andNOx. A replacement unit must be anoriginal Honda part or its equivalent.
