The first week of the Festival features many settings of the great German poet and polymath Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832). Today’s study day examines his towering influence in all areas of culture

He is joined by exceptional American pianist Deirdre Brenner in a programme that dwells on the peerless settings of Goethe by Franz Schubert, while also exploring some lesser-known settings by a range of other composers.

OXFORD LIEDER LIVE CDS Over the past three years, Oxford Lieder has programmed and recorded the complete songs of Hugo Wolf – a world first – for release on the label Stone Records. The final volumes will be recorded at this year’s Festival (12th, 14th and 17th); volumes one to nine are already available. CDs of Schubert and Britten are also being added to Oxford Lieder’s catalogue and will be on sale at the Festival.

robert saxton is one of today’s most highly regarded composers and his new song cycle, time and the seasons, which sets his own poetry, is oxford lieder’s most substantial commission to date. Coupled with this is schumann’s cycle of heine poetry, the “poet’s love”, one of the pinnacles and most popular works of the entire song repertoire. roderick williams and andrew west are certain to give a memorable, illuminating and inspiring rendition of both works.

spend the afternoon in the gloriously eclectic Pitt Rivers Museum. there will be live music at intervals, a slide-show of remarkable photographs from the Andrée expedition (see 10pm concert) and a specially-designed paper trail guiding you around exhibits relating to our day theme: inuit clothing, mammoth ivory carvings, and other fascinating items.

At 4.45pm, after the Museum closes to the general public, there will be a talk given by Museum curator Dr Laura Peers on the Museum’s Arctic collection.

Salomon Andrée’s attempt to reach the North pole by balloon was a disaster that captured the attention of the world, especially Sweden, both at the time in 1897 and at the discovery in 1930 of their final camp.

this discovery uncovered remarkably detailed photos (see afternoon event)and diaries, movingly set to music by American composer Dominick Argento.

Ciara Hendrick and Libby burgess have both appeared regularly at the Lieder Festival, most recently in composition workshops held with the Faculty of Music. Today they perform britten’s two cycles for mezzo alongside one of Schumann’s most popular works. They also present three short songs by Oxford university student composers.

Britten - Introduction & Rondo alla Burlesca McPhee - arrangements of Balinese GamelanBritten - Variations on a theme of Frank Bridge (arr. McPhee).

as a scintillating extra to our Britten weekend, this prize-winning piano duo present an early-evening concert in place of a pre-concert talk. One of Britten’s only works for two pianos is set alongside Colin McPhee’s arrangment of Balinese gamelan music: Britten had visited Bali and was fascinated by the music he heard there. He famously recorded these arrangements with McPhee.

Joan rodgers is renowned as one of the foremost interpreters of russian repertoire and tonight she performs Britten’s only work in russian as well as the remarkable settings of poems by alexander Blok by Britten’s friend, shostakovich. For these songs, she is joined by the phoenix piano trio. a first half of schumann songs and his ravishing phantasiestücke completes a memorable evening.

roger Vignoles concludes his week-long residency at the Festival with this concert. world-renowned German tenor Christoph prégardien makes his first appearance at the lieder Festival in what is sure to be a sell-out occasion.

Kate roYal (soprano) sholto KYnoCh (piano)songs by schubert, strauss and mahlerthroughout her rapid rise to international stardom on the operatic stage, Kate royal (a national opera studio alumna – see 5pm concert) has retained a reputation for her commitment to the recital platform and her song recordings have been widely acclaimed. she closes the 2013 Festival with a first half of schubert songs followed by a wonderful selection of strauss and mahler.

the songs of Franz schubert have been at the core of the Festival since its all-schubert inception in 2002, and in october 2014 oxford will see the first ever complete performance of his remarkable body of songs in a three-week extravaganza.

In his all too short life - just 31 years - schubert wrote some 650 songs. many are perfect masterpieces, most are exquisite, and not one is without merit and interest. around the songs, other music and a host of cultural events will illuminate the Vienna that schubert inhabited; a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience the full breadth and inspiration of this remarkable composer. over three weeks there will be over fifty concerts.
