ED ITOR IALOn the eve of the Chandramana Yugadi of Hemalambi nama Samvatsara we bring the new year greetings to all of you and the good news that S-VYASA has been accredited by the NAAC in the 2nd Cycle as A+ with CGPA of 3.58 which is the Second Highest among all the 43 Accredited Institutions on Mar 28, 2017.

This has been made possible by the hard work and team synergy of all our Office Bearers, Faculty, Students, Alumni, Parents, etc. of Prashanti Kutiram family.

The Knowledge base which brought this laurel to the University has been derived by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda in the field of Education (Man Making to be added to Bread Earning) to solve the challenges of modern society.

By bringing the best of the East (Yoga and its Applications) with that of the West (Modern Scientific Research). Having translated the ancient traditional Yoga system in its broadest sense encompassing Jnana Yoga of Prasthana Traya including Upanishads to unravel the Laws of the whole creation, Raja Yoga of Patanjali to gain mastery over mind, Bhakti Yoga of Narada to gain mastery over Emotions and Karma Yoga to convert every action into Yoga using the secrets of action enunciated in Bhagavadgita

into an academic curriculum and the techniques of Yoga being examined by modern scientific research before their adoption into the syllabus.

S-VYASA has acquired a unique position in the history of higher education in the whole world. And among all the Yoga Institutions of the world S-VYASA and VYASA stand distinct through their contributions in the field of Yoga Research.

We congratulate Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh for having got the highest CGPA of 3.79 and an A++ with whom we have an MoU to bring the dimensions of Yoga in Sports and Physical Education.

äüsUÇm! (Brahmasütram)

naÉav %plBxe> (äüsUÇm!-2-2-28)Näbhäva upalabdheù (Brahmasütram-2-2-28)

Meaning: The non-existence (of eternal things) cannot be maintained; on account of (our) consciousness (of them).

Here Buddhist thought process has been taken for evaluation. Buddhist philosophy has many schools of thoughts. Madhyamika is the main school, later Yogachara also came; the first advocates nihilism and the latter agrees with the idea of existence of inner aspects that are Manas, Alaya and Pravritti Vijnanam. However, the Buddhist approach completely depends on logic alone. Vedacharya Maharshi Vyasa does not approve this school of thought though it is logically sophisticated.

Further, worldly affairs cannot be handled if one follows complete Nihilism of Buddhists. Does mirage, which is absent in nature, quench the thirst of any one? No; one has to accept the two Sattas (existences), namely Parmarthika (absolute) and Vyavaharika (communicable world) to be logical. When one goes beyond mind and matter, one may consider the transitory existence of the world. As long as Vyavahara (communication) is obvious, so long a human continues to hold ignorance. To some extent worldly existence is true as compared to absolute existence. Whatever be the logic, one cannot deny sensory perception such as seeing, eating, touching etc. The fact remains the same i.e. though things are subjected to experience through perception, they are temporary by nature. If one is already preconditioned, one superimposes one’s own ideas on the perception.

Analysis should be in this line rather than merely sticking on to the idea of nihilism.

Pravritti Vijnana is also far away from reality even when Buddhist school tries to prove inner existence which is basically untrue. A beggar, sitting in broken roof of a Dharmashala (gratis based guest house) dreamt as follows. ‘In a kingdom, the king passed away; the villagers and ministers decided to select the new king by sending an elephant with a garland. The elephant garlanded this beggar to be the king. The new king was coroneted, got married and had children. One fine day, an enemy attacked on the new coroneted king’. The sleeping beggar woke up with a big shriek and he continued to beg forever (from Tirukana Kanasu – dream of a beggar).

When a beggar dreams about oneself becoming a king, it is just a thought in the mind, creation of dream. The reality is when the dream is broken, he continues to beg. When one analyses the non-existed world very objectively, one may succeed in life if one follows the way of the beggar, namely coming out of the dream. With the imaginary plow one cannot cultivate, with imaginary legs one cannot walk and so on. Just creation by mind never works in the practical world. Therefore, Buddhistic approach is false in this context.

The important thing here is to remember even the memory is based on past experiences. One cannot remember anything which was not experienced in the past. Past experiences form memories. When a person sees a pot, he remembers that, ‘I fetched water with this pot, drank water from this pot’ and so on, along with all other past experiences. In all these thoughts and experiences, the observer or the performer has continually existed and witnessing everything. Almost all Indian philosophies call this observer Atma (conscious being). For Madhyamikas of Buddhists ‘Observer and observed are non-existent’. The theory of Yogachara from the other Buddhstic thought postulate ‘Observer is existent but not the observed’. Both these ideologies stand as deceptions to human experiences. Vyasa denounces the very validity of this theory.

Historical background gives a hint for genesis of these theories. Some people were just behind materialistic worldly enjoyment and indulgence. In order to change the trend of the mindset of the people of that time, Buddhistic thoughts were prevalent. Many Nihilistic theories were very popular in post Mahabharata time: Jaganmithya-vada (theory of world to be false), Maya-vada

(theory of world to be governed by illusion), Shunya-vada (theory of world being absent), Bahyarthashunya-vada (theory of world to be absent in the external world) and Sarvashunya-vada (theory of complete nihilism). All these theories intend to make human free from the clutches of materialism. In order to direct the minds of that generation towards Dharma and Moksha, these theories emerged.

However, nihilistic theories were taken to extreme by some extremists. Acharya Shankara advocated Bramha Vada, not Maya-Vada. Just to validate that Bramha to be everything in the creation, he developed the school of superimposition. One may not prove Brahma unless we disprove the existence of external world. Hence Acharya Shankara took the help of the concept of Maya to establish Bramha. Some disciples advocated only Maya and other took it negatively as Maya-Vada. Acharya Shankara says that these thoughts are similar to the mansions build with sand; they fall apart as they are built. All nihilistic theories led people to be slothful and escapists, hence Acharya tells us to negate all these theories. Thus, we should depend on Shruti, Yukti and Anubhuti for realistic observations.

We are responsible for what we are, and whatever we wish ourselves to be, we have the power to make ourselves. If what we are now has been the result of our own past actions, it certainly follows that whatever we wish to be in future can be produced by our present actions; so we have to know how to act.

Swami Vivekananda

Yoga Sudha10

Sage Vasista elaborately described the form and nature of the mind to Lord Sri Rama and also motivated him to engage his mind in yoga. According to the sage, mind (manas or chitta) is nothing but a modification of the special feelings of the objects imposed upon or experienced by us. That feeling has the nature of continuous movement (chalana) which is right and wrong in nature. The effect of such right and wrong actions results in the soul assuming various forms in successive lives. The mind operates in the realm of action (kriyā) and result (phala).

Sri Rama further requests Vasista to elaborate on the basic nature of the mind as it is inert (jada) but still assumes a form and becomes active (ajada) in nature (Yoga Vāsista, utpatti prakaranam, YV, 96-2). Vasista replies thus: the mind originates initially from the all-powerful eternal soul which is covered (āvaraņa) by superimposition (māyā). This mind is endowed with the power of conviction (YV, 96-3). It also moves amidst real(sat) and unreal (asat) aspects

of the world (jagat) and gives a substratum for both. For instance, the example of rope (rajju) being mistaken for a serpent (sarpa) called as superimposition (adhyāsa). This mind observes the phenomena of the world and examines the real (sat) and unreal things (asat) and arrives at the real nature of things and exhibits desire (icchā) for its own expression.

This aspect of the mind is called right remembrance (smriti). This mind constantly searches the basic nature of reality (sat). When the mind is directed by intelligence and the soul regarding the apparent nature of the universe and when the mind realizes that this eternal principle is beyond space (deśa), time (kāla)

and causality (kāraņa-kārya bhāva), the resulting knowledge is called true knowledge (yathārtha jńana).

This mind moves and makes effort in knowing about the existence of the soul all the time. It is considered as the great effort of the mind (prayatna). When the same mind is prompted by false knowledge and guided by illusory nature (prātibhāsika) of the world, then it is assumes the form of remembrance (smriti, YV, 96-2).

The same mind when engaged in the actions of hearing, touching, eating, smelling, analyzing and becoming a presiding deity for the cause - effect activities and motivating the self, then it is called as sense organs (indriya YV, 96-27). The same mind when assumes the form of undivided agent of action and expresses itself for the manifestation of the universe, it assumes the name of primordial nature (prakriti). The same mind creates an illusory nature of objects as real or unreal, temporary or permanent, then it would be called as māyā.

If the mind engages itself in actions through the help of five sensory and five motor organs, then it is dynamic (kriyā) in nature resulting in worldly bondage (samsāra). At that time, the mind, with its throbbing nature (spanda svabhāva) gets transferred into dharma. This mind assumes various parallel names such as chit (mind apparatus or mind-stuff as named by Swami Vivekananda), buddhi (determinative faculty or intelligence) etc., To the question of Rama as to

how this chitta which is none to second (advitīyam) assumed other names and forms, Vasista replies that the meshes of ignorance drives the chitta in undergoing modifications and resulting in noble and ignoble, happy (sukha) and unhappy (dukkha) actions of people. This mind is neither inert (jada), inanimate (achetana) nor animate (chetana) in nature (manvāno manah, tānyetāni karmaņāmānyeva I). It covers both aspects.

The chitta assumes various forms and states depending upon the role it plays in worldly life. This mind also has contradictory nature of real and unreal aspects. The ignorant (ajňana) status of the soul can be considered as chitta. This results in the creation of the world. The various names such as egoism (ahamkāra) intelligence (buddhi) have been superimposed on to chitta just as an actor while enacting a drama wears different dresses pertaining to various dramatic roles; it also assumes various names and forms based on its inward and outward activities. Hence, mind or chitta is the cause for all the activities just as light or luminescence is the cause for the knowledge of all forms.

Any person who through the practice of yoga and knowledge (jňāna) understands that he is liberated and realizes that he is the very form of absolute existence (sat), absolute knowledge and (jňāna), absolute bliss (ānanda), then he would become an enlightened soul. Hence, sage Vasista calls upon Rama to know the nature of mind correctly and practice Yoga for attaining spiritual enlightenment.

REG Studies on HomagMs. Divya B R, PhD Scholar, S-VYASA

What is REG?

Random Event Generator (REG) is a simple electronic device which generates true random numbers, as a string of 0’s and 1’s, like an electronic coin flipper, rapidly flipping coin 200 times a second.

How does the measurement work?

Random numbers are generated based on Johnson noise, the extremely low-level fluctuations in electron flow in a resistor due to thermal influences. REG has a built-in logic transformation (XOR), to eliminate in principle any bias of the mean output of the device. Generated random numbers are recorded using a computer attached to it. Any change in consciousness field in captured by REGs.

Types of REG experiments

• Field REG: Group activity like meditation, prayer, rituals etc would influence REG

• Intention REG: One individual attempts to influence REG through his intention

Applications of REG

• Scientists try to predict major events in nature

• Global Consciousness Project (GCP) is active in this endeavor since August 1998

• REG was influenced few hours before Sep 11 and Tsunami events

• Used to get objective proof for interaction of mind with matter

REG Research at S-VYASA

• Track influence of various spiritual activities happening in campus

• Use as a tool to investigate subtle phenomenon of nature involving mind-matter interactions

• Contribute to the Global Consciousness Project as being a nodal center

Vedic Science is the very Embodimentof Consciousness - Dr. H R Nagendra

Prashanti Kutiram, Feb 28: Vedas are not only the texts dealing with mundane knowledge but also represent the thoughts of consciousness at various levels. The modern materialistic science deals with world and its phenomena whereas Vedic knowledge deals with infinite knowledge and bliss which has pervaded the entire universe. This infinite knowledge was experienced, documented by Vedic sages which can be experienced by us even now by harnessing physical, mental and spiritual sheaths of our body, said Dr. H R Nagendra, the Hon’ble Chancellor of S-VYASA while inaugurating a Lecture Series on the Vedas organized jointly by Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR), New Delhi, Sri Chidambara Institute of Research and Development, Gubbi and S-VYASA Yoga University. Dr. Nagendraji further said that all of us come from that original state of Brahma Nirvana which could be expressed through the recitation and understanding of the Vedic Mantras and practicing of Yoga.

Dr. Ramachandra G Bhat, the Vice-Chancellor

of Yoga University in his speech said that five levels of awareness can be obtained by spiritual seekers for which they have to go beyond speech, book, heart, mind and go beyond these to attain unitary consciousness. He compared the Vedic Yoga with Patanjali Yoga and cautioned that one should not be carried away by just techniques and modern publicity on Yoga.

Dr. G N Bhat, Dean of Yoga-Spirituality, S-VYASA said that Yajna or sacrifice is performed at various levels for attaining individual and societal welfare. He said that people well versed in the study of Vedas should communicate the essence of the Vedas to the commoners in local languages. The holy smoke arising out of the sacrificial altar has the capacity to drive away the pollution and also protect the environment.

Prof. M K Sridhar, Academic Dean, S-VYASA spoke on the science and technology in the Vedas. He said that Vedic knowledge is like an inverted tree and its source is infinite consciousness from which has originated all

aspects of knowledge. The Vedic sages were the pioneers in science and technology and had far advanced compared to the development of other Eastern and Western civilizations during that time as evident from archeological excavations. He called upon the youth to do research in these new areas of the Vedas from modern scientific angle and implement the Vedic technology for human welfare.

Prof. K Subrahmanyam, Pro-Chancellor, S-VYASA in his remarks said that today being Sri. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa’s birthday, one should remember his personality, philosophy and imbibe in our life, the spiritual values advocated and practiced by Sri Ramakrishna.

Sri Shiva Chidambara Sharma, Chairman of Sri Chidambara Institute of Research and Development, Gubbi, Tumkur District called upon the youth to cherish some noble values in life, be spiritual in nature and participate

in nation building activities with a spirit of dedication and sacrifice.

Dr. Sachhidananda Sogala, Managing Trustee of Sri Chidambara Trust welcomed the gathering and remembered the great contributions made by Swami Chidambara, who said that the research was meditation through which one could unravel the complexities of the Universe and find solutions through spiritual means laid down by the Swamji. He felicitated Dr. H R Nagendraji for being a Padma Shri awardee by Government of India. The trustees, Sri K S Narayan, S-VYASA University Registrar, Dr. Sanjib Kumar Patra were present. Sri M V Lakshmikanta, the Secretary of Sri Chidambara Research proposed a hearty vote of thanks. The students of Chidambarashram and S-VYASA recited the Vedic hymns.

Arogyadhama Success StoryMultiple Myeloma

Can yoga mitigate the scourge of dreadful cancer? Astonishingly, the answer is a resounding ‘yes’, judging by the response to treatment given to a cancer patient at Arogyadhama. Sceptical professionals in the established allopathic system may ridicule this but the very patient, who got tremendous relief after taking the treatment, will testify to the efficacy of the yoga system of treatment.

Mr. Manohar (name changed), a 42-year-old professor, came to our Arogyadhama with complaints of recurrent lower back pain since 2010. The pain kept increasing despite taking painkillers. In November 2012, he was diagnosed with cancer. The CT guided biopsy of the spine at NIMHANS showed a lesion with secondary metastatic carcinoma. Despite all investigations the primary source of cancer could not be traced and he was administered six cycles of chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy, but his PET scan actually showed an increase in the metastasis to 25% after the last cycle.

By now the patient had lost weight, appetite became poor, stricken by severe constipation, developed hyperpigmentation of skin, had hair fall all over, felt terribly weak and could not walk without support. It was at this stage he came to our Arogyadhama and put on pranayama practice 3 to 4 times a day and Om meditation. He was given a cleansing diet with fruit juices, wheat grass juice and daily enema. He gradually gained weight and started doing gentle asanas along with cyclic meditation (CM) and mind sound resonance technique (MSRT) regularly. He

also started doing pranic energisation technique (PET) daily. Ayurvedic herbal preparations and antioxidants were added to his routine.

Improved Parameters

With this treatment Mr Manohar was doing well even after 12 months of the declaration that he would survive 3 to 4 months only. Muscle strength in his legs had improved and he could walk a few steps daily. His hair grew again, skin texture became normal, there was no pain in leg and spine and his bowel functions were normal. His haemoglobin levels improved

Aim: The present study is aimed at assessing the immediate effect of cyclic meditation on autonomic function in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Materials and Methods: Thirty type 2 diabetes mellitus subjects with an age of 51.23 ± 6.68 years were included in the study. All subjects practiced either CM or SR (as control intervention) for 30 min at the same time for two consecutive days. The sequence of intervention was assigned randomly to the participants. HRV was assessed using RMS Polyrite D, a digitized polygraph manufactured by Recorders and Medicare Systems, Chandigarh, India. Intervention was given in a quiet dark room on an empty stomach. Subjects received a training of CM and SR for 6 days before data were taken. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Repeated measures analyses of variance (REM ANOVA) was performed with two within subject’s factors, i.e., (1) Sessions with two levels; Cyclic meditation (CM) and Supine rest (SR) and (2) States with two levels; i.e., Pre and post. Post hoc tests with Bonferroni adjustment for multiple comparisons were used to detect significant differences between mean values recorded pre and post (for both ‘CM Sessions’ and ‘SR sessions’ separately).

Results: Comparison within group showed significant reduction in low

frequency component of frequency domain (p= 0.018,-9.68 %), significant improvement in high frequency domain (P= 0.018, 24.28 %) and LF/HF ratio (P = 0.005,-33.84 %) of HRV following Cyclic meditation. There was no significant change as compared after SR to baseline in any of the HRV variables.

Between groups comparison of CM and SR group showed, no significant changes in any of the components of HRV.

Conclusion: It was observed in the study that the state of relaxation after CM results in parasympathetic dominance, as evidenced by the increased HF component of the RR-interval series. These findings need confirmation from studies with a larger sample size & randomized controlled design, which are implicated in the future.

Background: Multiple Sclerosis is characterized by a significant deterioration in auditory and visual reaction times along with associated depression and anxiety. Yoga and physical therapy interventions have been found to enhance recovery from these problems in various neuro-psychiatric illnesses, but sufficient evidence is lacking in chronic MS population.

Aim: To assess the effect of Integrated Yoga and Physical therapy (IYP) on audio-visual reaction times, depression and anxiety in patients suffering from chronic multiple sclerosis.

Material and Methods: From a Neuro-rehabilitation centre in Germany, eleven patients (6 females) suffering from multiple sclerosis for 19±7.4 years were recruited. Subjects were in the age range of 55.45±10.02 years and had Extended Disability Status Scores (EDSS) below 7. All the subjects received mind-body intervention of Integrated Yoga and Physical therapy (IYP) for three weeks. The intervention was given in a residential setup. Patients followed a routine involving yogic physical postures, pranayama and meditations along with various physical therapy techniques for 21 days, five days a week, 5 hours per day. They were assessed before and after intervention for changes in audio-visual reaction times (using Brain Fit model No OT 400), anxiety and depression (using HADS). Data was analysed using paired samples test.

Result: There was significant improvement in visual reaction time (p = 0.01), depression (p = 0.04) and anxiety (p = 0.02) scores at the end of 3 weeks as compared to the baseline.

Auditory reaction time showed reduction with borderline statistical significance (p = 0.058).

Conclusion: This pilot project suggests utility of IYP intervention for improving audio-visual reaction times and psychological health in chronic MS patients. In future, randomized controlled trials with larger sample size should be performed to confirm these findings.

Key words: Multiple sclerosis, yoga, physical therapy, reaction time, anxiety, depression.

Research at ‘Center for Energy Research’A very interesting observation made by two scientists Prof. Martin Fleishmann and Prof. Stanley Pons in USA (March 23, 1989) during an electrochemical experiment indicated the possibility of Fusion reaction occurring at relatively low temperatures of several hundred degrees, instead of millions of degrees centigrade at which the nuclear fusion of hydrogen is taking place on the Sun. The observed excess energy was much higher than that due to the possible chemical reaction in the cell. Subsequently several groups tried but failed to reproduce the result, including the parent group. The whole scientific community expressed skepticism and stopped working on this concept based on the fact that, such low temperature fusion is not possible based on the known theory of nuclear physics.

However the interest on this ‘Cold Fusion’ got revived in the year 2007, when an Italian entrepreneur Mr. Andrea Rossi, filed his patent application for his invention of 1KWth ‘Baby Low Energy Nuclear Reactor’. He claimed that, the reactor produced enough energy to heat his office room for several months using only one gram of Nickel nano powder with catalyst and customized power supply for initiating the fusion.

Several R & D Labs, Industries and Universities in USA, Russia, Italy, China and Japan have started working again to explore this further. Many groups have claimed to have produced excess energy based on Rossi concept. Almost all of them have not succeeded so far to get consistency, efficiency and reliability.

The latest initiative is in 2016 by Carl Page, brother of Larry Page (Co-founder of Google), involving Academic Institution(Stanford Research Institute) and American Industry (Brillouin Energy Inc) and his conviction and trust in this path breaking Science & Technology. He is supporting the work at Brillouin Energy Inc Involving 2 famous professors Michael McKubre & Robert Godes. This indicates that, India should not be left lagging behind, in case any one agency in any part of the world succeeds. out R&D in any area of interest to the country. This great vision and urge to help the country made him to invite Dr. Prahlada Ramarao, (Padma Shri Awardee, 2015) who was Former Distinguished Scientist and Chief Controller, DRDO and also Former Vice Chancellor of the Defense University in Pune to carry out the Energy Research in the S-VYASA University. Dr. Prahlada is well known for his outstanding success in heading the R&D activities of many missile programs in the country covering Akash, Brahmos and Strategic missile systems.

Dr. Prahlada formed a small Team and created a lab to take up the research activities from the end of 2014. The Research Team currently includes Dr. Shree Varaprasad (Chemistry), Er. Shashank G Dath (Electrical), Er. Shyam Sunder (Mechanical) and Technician Mr. Kotresh. The group has regular meetings and is getting valuable inputs from Prof. Umapathy (Chairman, Dept. of IPC, IISc), Prof. Andrew Muellenberg (Visiting Prof.), Prof. Alex Hankey (Visiting Prof.) and Mr. Rangaswami (Rtd. BARC). The research effort is being supported by the University within its limited resources.

The Team has conducted more than 100 experiments. Some of the experiments have given positive results and a hope to move forward. Data of one such experiment is shown here in this report.

Here in this graph, coil and core temperatures represent the temperature of the coil (input) and temperature of the core (Fuel). In this graph one can observe that, till certain point both core and coil temperatures were almost equal for a given power. Later even after maintaining the input power to the coil at 850W, the core temperature went up and was reading 100OC more than the coil temperature for about 20 minutes at which point the coil failed.

Commerce and ServiceEverybody is engaged in some activity or another. It may be a physical action or a psychological activity or an oral expression. At three levels people work; physical, vocal and mental. At the physical level they are deeds, at the psychic level they are thoughts and feelings, and at the vocal level they are words. No action at any one of the levels is absolutely good or absolutely bad. No action is always good to all people at all times and at every level. Every action is relatively good or relatively bad. Every action does have a reaction. As all activities are a combination of good and evil, all the reactions also are a combination of good and evil. Nobody is free from actions and reactions which are relatively good and bad. In short, all are engaged in interactions (actions and reactions). These interactions may be called commerce. It is give and take, that is the undercurrent of all interactions. If we give more and take less it is service. If we pay less and receive more, it is business.

In every activity of commerce, there can be service: and in every activity of service there can be commerce. Profiteering, calculative psychology and money making policies are commercial activities known to be business. Contrary to this, if there is concern and consideration for others, there will be less commercialism and more service. Karma yoga, it is, when the thrust is less on profit and more on service.

An ordinary person tries to see that, there is more benefit to himself or herself in every transaction or interaction. It is in other words an enterprise of selfishness. If a person has love for others, there will be more of service which is karma yoga. This karma yoga of unselfish service is a welfare activity. That welfare activity is called “Yajna”.

A business man, amidst his commercial activity, can be of use and service to others. A business man can do service to the customers by reducing his profit. He can also serve others by giving good quality products. He can restrain himself from selling a bad product at a high cost. For example, if a customer brings a prescription for a medicine to be bought from a medical shop, the salesman can study the medicine, apply his mind and find out whether the medicine is really of any use to the patient. If the medicine is meant for typhoid and the patient is suffering from cholera, he can point it out to the customer for a verification, instead of selling the products without any concern for the patient. This will go a long way to make the businessmen a karma

yogi. A person of concern for others will ask whether his activities are customer-friendly. Whatever may be the profession, a karma yogi will see that he or she is more useful to others than to himself or herself.

Contrary to a karma yogi, there can be people proclaiming to be doing service with commercial intentions. While giving education, there is profiteering. It is then not a service activity. While giving medical treatment, there can be exploitation of the patients in the name of service to mankind. Similarly, if an officer does not rise to the expectations of the society and be customer friendly, it is cheating himself and the society in the disguise of civil service.

Karma yoga is not something to be practiced only by sadhus, saints and sages sitting under the greenwood trees shade or in a distant hermitage. It can be practiced by anybody, in any walk of life. If the calculative psychology is reduced and profiteering is minimized, if the integrity is ensured and if the allotted duties are sincerely performed, it is a great service to mankind. Let us not ask what the country has done to us, let us ask what we have done to the country. When we practice yoga, it is not merely a physical performance of asanas, it is a change in the mind set. Let us be less selfish and more service-oriented. Even if one percentage of weightage is given to service, it is a sure sign of growing towards karma yoga.

2nd International Conference on Integrative MedicineTheme: Role of Yoga and Ayurveda in Pain and Addiction Management

May 20-22, 2017Joseph B Martin Conference Center, Harvard Medical School

77 Avenue Louis Pasteur, Boston, MA 02115

Integrative medicine is grounded in the definition of health. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Patient centered care is the core belief of integrative medicinal approach and addresses the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect a person’s health. Employing a personalized strategy that considers the patient’s unique conditions, needs and circumstances, it uses the most appropriate interventions from an array of disciplines to heal illness and disease as well as regain and maintain optimum health. Through personalizing care, integrative medicine goes beyond the treatment of symptoms to address all the root causes of an illness. In doing so, the patient’s immediate health needs as well as the effects of the long-term and complex interplay between biological, behavioral, psycho-social and environmental influences are taken into account. With a growing demand in the field of Integrative medicine, it can be considered a global priority in the research and development of long term, cost effect medical care and disease management.
