What are the family stories that have shaped you? Our

stories are like the glasses through which we see the

world.

Mine are the tales of mission work in the Far East in the

1950s and 60s, or that of Postwar America with 5 kids

around the dinner table, like something from a Norman

Rockwell painting.

For Amy’s family, it’s the beauty and tragedy of the

Pennsylvania hills, and a family that refused to let

poverty get the better of them, because Grandma

Conner simply wouldn’t let it.

A philosopher by the name of Alasdair MacIntyre says,

“I (we) cannot answer the question ‘what am I to do?’

until we answer the prior question, ‘of what story or

stories do I find myself a part?’”

Stories help us understand our place in the world and

give our lives a foundation that can help us find

meaning around us. For many in our world, their stories

are full of let-down, heartbreak, overwhelming odds. For

others, it may just be the ho-hum of your average

American story—nothing monumental, nothing

catastrophic.

But there is one story, a grand story, that unites us all,

whether we realize it or not. One story invites us into

wonder. It’s a story of incomparable love, generosity,

faithfulness, and forgiveness. It’s God’s story, and God’s

story is truly EPIC.

This fall, we begin a new series of messages looking at

the wonder of God’s story. Only there’s one tiny wrinkle:

we will follow our children. Throughout the fall, you are

invited to rediscover these stories afresh alongside our

children as they discover and wonder at the mystery of

God’s story.

Each fall, our Godly Play curriculum begins with the

stories of Creation, Flood, Covenant, and Family. Our

children are invited to see themselves as a part of God’s

special family, and to let those stories become their

stories. We will join them.

Families, this is a perfect opportunity for you to learn and discover

together, as our lessons in “Big Church” will follow our children’s

lessons in Godly Play. Here are some practical steps to enhancing this

experience:

1. Wonder together over Sunday Brunch.

2. Let your children describe the Bible story they encountered in their

own words.

3. Ask “I wonder” questions of your children to let their imagination

recreate each encounter.

For those without children at home, I encourage you to find

opportunities to meet with others for lunch or for coffee and retell the

story in your own words.

There is nothing average, nothing pedestrian about God’s wonderful

story—even though we allow it become such. This is your opportunity

to hear these stories afresh and experience the wonder of it all.

SERMON SERIES:

God of Wonders—Encountering the Living God

through the Wonder of the Word

I wonder… These are the questions we ask while lying down looking up

to the sky; these are the questions we ask when imagining how our

lives will go; these are the questions we ask when we wonder whether

something could be possible.

These are the questions we ask our children as they discover the

stories of God, and we are going to join them. This fall, as we journey

alongside our children in their Godly Play experience, we will discover

together the story of which we all are a part.

classroom! Help us stock our shelves by providing some of these items,

as highlighted on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall.

Psalm 78:4 ESV

We will not hide them from

This month, Wabash Presbyterian is applying for a

new program called Sacred Places Indiana*. Many

historic churches face the same, or similar,

challenges as we do at WPC, and so Sacred Places

Indiana was created to train churches to identify

their assets, tell their story outside of church, and

look for new funding opportunities. The main idea is

that most churches are used for community-wide

needs, almost like community centers. Once we

identify how we meet our community's needs and

assign a value to that, then we can approach

potential donors outside of our church for financial

support.

If we are accepted into the program (only 8 to 10

will be accepted in 2016!), a team of four or five

from WPC will attend four training sessions over the

next year. We'll come back with assignments that

will require many of us to get involved. In the end,

we'll be equipped to tell our story in a way that will

help find funds to take care of our buildings.

I hope you will join me in praying, if it is God's will,

that we be accepted into the Sacred Places Indiana

program, and that we squeeze every ounce of

information and assistance we can out of the

opportunity.

*Created in 2015, the program is a partnership

through our state's historic preservation

organization, Indiana Landmarks, and another

non-profit, Sacred Places, which has helped

churches all over the United States. Sacred Places

Indiana is supported with funds through the Lilly

Endowment. You can learn more on Indiana

Landmark’s website.

On Sunday, September 11th, we will be raising funds

to offset the cost of our Education Roof Project. We

invite you to consider a one-time offering of

support.

WPC is home to a half dozen local service and

ministry agencies, plus our preschool ministry:

CASA

Hands of Hope

IN Source

Indiana Autism Society

Meals on Wheels

Musikgarten

We believe this is a part of our community and

Christian responsibility. Join us along with our

partners in ensuring these offices remain safe and

dry for the future.

The expected cost is $27,000. Let’s cover the roof

with our prayer, our love, and our support.
