The Morung Express SPORTS Friday 18 February 2011 10 Dimapur LONDON, FEBRUARY 17 (AGENCIES) : Arsenal struck two late goals to snatch an un- likely 2-1 win over Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash at The Emirates on Wednesday. Barcelona dominat- ed possession with wonderful passing, working tirelessly to harass the home side in their short spells on the ball, and deservedly led through a David Villa goal after 26 minutes. They could have had three or four more but Arsenal levelled out of the blue through Robin van Persie in the 78th minute. That would have been kind on Arsenal, beat- en 6-3 on aggregate by the Spaniards in last sea- son's quarter-finals, but they got a huge bonus seven minutes from time when substitute An- drei Arshavin swept in the second after a superb counter-attack. "They are the best side in foot- ball's history in my opinion. That is one game and this is halftime," Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas said. "It is a nice victory but that's all. If we show it here and not the Camp Nou, it is nothing for us." Dutchman Van Persie, who missed both matches in last year's quarter-final, said Arse- nal had beaten Barcelona at their own game. "In our opinion if you drop back too much they are so good they will beat you, " he said. "We had to beat them in their own style. It was a fantastic result in the end." Arsenal actually started well and it needed a good save by Victor Valdes to block a Van Persie shot after five minutes fol- lowing a clever flick by Fabregas. But it was a false dawn as the visitors quick- ly settled into their well-worn rhythm, moving Arsenal this way and that before slicing them open repeatedly with practically identical pass- es between the centre backs. Messi ran on to the first from Villa after 15 minutes but though the striker's dummy took Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny out of the equation his dinked finish rolled inches wide. The goal came when Messi returned the compliment and Villa, in acres of space, tucked the ball away with the minimum of fuss. It could have been more as Arsenal were chasing shadows with the Spaniards enjoying 61 percent of possession in the first half and completing more than twice as many passes as their hosts during the match. When Arsenal did begin to get some of the ball after the break Barca gave them another lesson, this time in the art of closing down, as they showed that like all great teams they know how to work hard and defend when they have to. The game seemed to be heading only one way until the ball broke to Van Persie wide on the left with little apparent danger but from a tight angle he lashed a shot that sneaked inside the near post of a flat-footed Valdes. The goal lifted the crowd and Arsenal responded with a Bar- ca-style counter-attack that ended with Samir Nasri squaring for substitute Arshavin to sweep in the winner. "It is one of those special nights. It was a great game that did not disappoint," Ar- senal manager Arsene Wenger said. "When you play Barcelona you are always on the border of collapsing but we showed great resilience. It's open now, we will go there and play our game because you can't go to the Nou Camp and just defend." Barca coach Pep Guar- diola, whose side's record 16-match winning sequence in La Liga was ended in a 1-1 draw with Sporting Gijon on Saturday, was not too troubled by defeat. "I think we more or less con- trolled the game and we just need to create the chances we did tonight in the Nou Camp and then take them," he said. "It will be an open game I am sure. Yes we have lost tonight, but we still have the second leg." The second leg at the Nou Camp Stadium is on March 8. DUBAI, FEBRUARY 17 (AFP): Ana Ivanovic, the 23-year-old for- mer world number one, admits she needs someone to understand her as she again ponders how to climb back to the top. A fading perfor- mance in a 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 first round loss to Patty Schnyder on Tuesday left Ivanovic with a paltry return of two wins in five matches in 2011, once more triggering analysis of what she needs to revive her un- doubted tennis talent. Part of it involves physical is- sues, but more of it seems to in- volve emotional struggles, en- compassing off-court professional relationships in her group as well as on-court sports psychology. "I just need someone to understand me as a person and understand what I need," said Ivanovic, who parted company with coach Anto- nio van Grichen last week. "And I need someone who's going to be a little bit relaxed, be- cause I'm such an intense person. I'm such a perfectionist and over- analyse everything so I need some- one who's going to make sure I chill out a little." Ivanovic has tried sev- eral coaches in the last couple of years, which has created twin plat- forms - a return to the top 20 and greater knowledge as to what sort of person might suit her. "I actu- ally think it's good to have a male coach," she reckoned. If he's good then I think a male coach can help so much. Guys and girls have dif- ferent mentalities. "Girls are so stressed about everything. Guys see everything much lighter and they take every- thing much lighter. That's great and it's something we have to learn from. Asked if two women together might make her stressed, she replied: "Yes, exactly. I think it would be too much. One woman on a team is enough! Two would be too much!" It was pointed out that her fitness coach, Marijana Lojanica, was a woman. "But that's differ- ent," Ivanovic asserted. "Tennis and fitness are very different. "Fit- ness is something that should be more relaxed and fun. You do work, but you can chit-chat in the mean- time. Tennis is more intense, it's more pressure and it's more stress- ful situations. I think two women working together would be hard." Ivanovic's thinking may have been influenced by the time she spent in Perth recently with her Serbian compatriot, Novak Djokovic, just before he won last month's Australian Open. "I just saw how Novak works and thought 'why am I so stressed about my own work?' Ivanovic said. "In Perth it was a small en- vironment and so you do hang out a lot. "I could see how he works, what he does for recovery and this kind of thing, and it's so much more relaxed than on the women's tour and so much more fun. They work really hard but in such a positive environment. "I thought, everyone around me is so stressed and down', and I'm like 'guys, just be more bubbly and happy and upbeat' because it affects you, the people that sur- round you, it affects you a lot. "So yes, I was speaking with him a lot and wanted to ask him how he does it, but it's very personal and hard for me to ask, but I'm sure he can give me good advice." Will she find the right formula for her? "I really strongly believe I can, you know," she replied. "Lots of peo- ple ask when it's going to happen, and it's hard to say. "I just have to really believe in myself and make those changes. I have to kind of, you know, go through it again to reach what I want to reach." The two-day long tourney is being hosted at the DDBA Indoor Stadium, Unit-ed Colony (formerly Half Na-garjan) under Ward 21.

Additional Commis-sioner, Income Tax Angam

Shaiza, IRS, graced the in-augural today as the chief guest. The chief guest in his address described badmin-ton as a ‘beautiful game’ with no age bar. The beauty of the game lays in the fact that people of any age can take it up as an active sport and can be played outdoor as well as indoor, he said. “Let us play in the right spir-it”, Shaiza urged the partici-pants, who is also an ardent

badminton player and also a member of the DDBA.

Eighty participants (forty teams) from Ko-hima, Tizit, Phek, ARTC, Dimapur and Ukhrul from neighbouring Manipur have turned up for the doubles’ only competition. The players are compet-ing in three age categories – sub-veterans (35-plus), veterans (45-plus) and su-per veterans (55-plus).
