Meet Sandra Moaney Wright, CRP, Ph.D. Moaney Wright & Associates

Like many residents who live in Chattahoochee Hills, Sandra Moaney Wright is no stranger to a long commute. At one point earlier in her career, she traveled 200 miles a day on her round-trip to Columbus.

This road-warrior fought traffic with the best of them. But when it came to battling traveling fatigue, she lost the fight. Sandra fell asleep at the wheel in that meditative state known as highway hypnosis.

“I woke up in a ditch and didn’t know where I was,” Sandra said. “It never occurred to me that I could be sleeping with my eyes wide open.”

Thankfully no one was hurt, but that accident had the effect of a near-death experience for Sandra. It not only caused her to reconsider her long commute, it gave her pause to re-evaluate her life and her career goals.

“It was a wake-up call for me,” she said. “I realized I was traveling through life with no direction, accepting a mundane existence instead of seeking my true purpose.”

As she sat in that ditch waiting for her husband to arrive, Sandra opened her eyes – and her heart – to new possibilities.

A New Direction Realizing that she loved her work as a trainer, Sandra put the wheels in motion to open her own consulting business, Moaney Wright & Associates. She quit her full-time job – and the long commute – and took a part-time job as a substitute teacher in local schools, while she worked on developing her business plan and searching for clients.

In 2003, she got her first break. She landed a training contract with one of the New York Times’ regional newspapers in Jacksonville, FL. In this first job, Sandra realized that consulting was the best of both worlds. She could help clients assess their training goals, incorporate existing training material if they wished, and then bring her unique experience to the classroom.

Fueled by her first success, Sandra began networking to meet other professionals and businesses that might mutually benefit from each other. “I joined every group I could find that would help grow my skills and put me around potential clients,” she said. Those groups included national speaker associations, business associations, chambers of commerce, and associations for meeting planners. It was through one of those networks that she met someone who worked for the federal government. This person introduced Sandra to others in government agencies, and before she knew it, her new business was on the road to success.

Branching Out Over the years, Sandra has grown her consulting business into an impressive array of offerings. Based on personal and professional development, her services include: professional speaking, business and life coaching, and training specializing in customer service, performance improvement, change management, leadership and team building, and curriculum development.

Still, Sandra wanted to do more. Practicing what she preached, she looked deep inside and asked herself what else she could do to make a difference for others, and for herself.

“Networking and mentoring had played such an important role in helping me redirect my career,” Sandra said, “I decided to start another business to help empower women.”

Sandra founded “Possibilities Unlimited for Women” to provide a forum for businesswomen, executives, entrepreneurs, and others to share their expertise, contacts, and passions while promoting their products and services. Possibilities Unlimited also helps young ladies by offering a $150 book scholarship to high school seniors. This is part of the networks’ strategy to “pay it forward,” sharing a bit of their success to strengthen future generations.

Today, Sandra successfully runs her two businesses from her home in Chattahoochee Hills. She is a member of the Chattahoochee Hills Business Network and volunteers at the Chattahoochee Hills Charter School, where her grand-daughter attends.

When asked what she attributes to her success, Sandra said it goes back to that fateful day so many years ago when she woke up in a road-side ditch.

“That experience taught me that life is short, and if you don’t pay attention to where you’re going, you never know where you’ll end up.”

Sandra presents the Possibilities Unlimited for Women Book Scholarship to Miss Morgan Easley

2017 Argon Award Presented to Steve and Marie Nygren The Argon Award is presented by Southface to showcase an individual or an organization that is leading the way in advancing sustainability efforts through innovative solutions.

This year, Steve and Marie Nygren were the honored recipients of the Argon Award for their commitment to improving people’s quality of life through healthy environments.

The Nygren Family joined in the celebration at the 19th annual Visionary Dinner, which raises awareness and funding for Southface’s continued work in high‑performance affordable housing, green infrastructure, clean energy, healthy buildings and sustainable communities.

Local Resident Designs the Argon Award We first heard about the Argon Award from resident Peter Clemens who wrote the following on Facebook (reprinted with Peter’s permission):

I was honored with the assignment to design and fabricate the Argon Award for Sustainability by Southface, the principal thought leader in this field here in Atlanta. This year, it was given to Serenbe's founders, Steve and Marie Nygren.

The awards banquet was a dazzling event, with foundation folks from around the country attending..Rockefeller, Turner, LEEDS etc. It was all a huge buzz for Judy and me and a thrilling and hope-inspiring night for us all.

The wooden surround was crafted using red grandis, a sustainably farmed and harvested wood similar to mahogany, imported from Nicaragua. Cutting was, as on other projects I've worked on here, CNC.

Steve Nygren, you and Marie have so richly deserved to be honored by these wonderful folks. I'm so glad we were here to see it happen....happier still to have been any part of the tribute at all. Thank you for Serenbe.

The 2017 Argon Award was designed by Peter Clemens from the Serenbe community.

Jimmy Carter: Elected President with Pocket Change and Peanuts (Hardcover) By Mercer University Press, Dorothy Padgett, Jimmy Carter How does a peanut farmer become Governor of Georgia and President of the United States? Only in America could such a story be true.

While the basics of his story are well known, they have never been told from the perspective of a "soldier" in the Peanut Brigade. Dorothy Padgett, with an earthy, honest, and Southern voice, tells the story as if new to all of us. Humor and insight abound in this direct telling of how a peanut farmer from Georgia became President and leader of the United States. The secret is in his character, his morality, and in his being truly human.

About The Book Rooted in the history of the only secessionist town north of the Mason Dixon Line, Daren Wang's The Hidden Light of Northern Fires tells a story of redemption amidst a war that tore families and the country apart.

Mary Willis has always been an outcast, an abolitionist in a town of bounty hunters and anti-Union farmers. After college, she dreams of exploring the country, but is obligated to take over the household duties and management of her family’s farm, while her brother Leander avoids his own responsibilities. Helping runaways is the only thing that makes her life in Town Line bearable.

When escaped slave Joe Bell collapses in her father’s barn, Mary is determined to help him cross to freedom in nearby Canada. But the wounded fugitive is haunted by his vengeful owner, who relentlessly hunts him up and down the country, and his sister, still trapped as a slave in the South.

As the countryside is riled by the drumbeat of civil war, rebels and soldiers from both sides bring intrigue and violence of the brutal war to the town and the farm, and threaten to destroy all that Mary loves.

Both classically-trained, the duo has made some cool Americana records, lived in Brooklyn, Nashville and Kansas, toured coast to coast, run out of money, toured Europe, run out of money again, won high-falutin' prizes for songwriting in New York, generally not argued, done benefit shows for prestigious US AAA radio stations, given away 200k+ tracks on Amazon, kept writing, built an audience, been named one of Amazon's Top 100 albums of the year, eaten copious amounts of vegetarian food, attracted 17k+ listeners a month on Spotify and FINALLY made a record, Q2 2016's "This is Life," which speaks to where they've been, who they are, what they want and where they're going. It's smart pop with an authentic Americana stamp, not the other way round. Somewhere in there they got married, but they'd rather not talk about that.

Memorial Shelton G. Stanfill February 29, 1940 - September 23, 2017

Shelton G. Stanfill, a national leader in the arts and humanities for more than 40 years, died on Saturday, September 23, at home. He was 77.

Most recently, he had been the CEO of Atlanta's Woodruff Arts Center, home of the High Museum of Art, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and Alliance Theatre Company, together the largest arts center in the South and third largest in the United States.

Previously he led the Los Angeles Music Center, the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts in Virginia, and the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth College.

Throughout his career, Stanfill was insistent upon extending arts education to children, and sought diversity in audiences and performances.

His employees could count on him for support and a fair and equitable workplace. His love of film, which began in his childhood when his father ran a movie theatre, was well known.

He was Co-Chair of the Atlanta Jewish Film festival, and never missed the Telluride Film Festival. He was a Councilor at the Carter Center, and a member of the board of the Midtown Alliance.

With his quick wit, keen mind, and an easy laugh, Stanfill was liked by all who knew him. Shelton Stanfill was generous in spirit, had many friends, and loved his wife, Brigitte, and their children, and grandchildren.

Stanfill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Brigitte, son Shaun Stanfill (Jacqui) of Ft. Collins, CO, daughters Jacqueline Olsen (Jay) of Arlington, VA, and Natasha Bullotta (Tom) of Vienna, VA, granddaughter Ingrid Olsen and grandsons Miles and Simon Bullotta.

There will be no formal service, per his wishes. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Brickworks (donations can be mailed to 6505 Rico Road, Chattahoochee Hills, GA 30268) or the Atlanta Community Food Bank (acfb.org).

City Government City Staff Reports Staff & Commission reports are available on the City’s Website: www.chatthillsga.us The following information is compiled by: Laurie Searle, Citizen Reporter.

City Manager Report MUNICIPAL ELECTION – October 1 is the deadline to register to vote in the upcoming November 7 municipal election in Chatt Hills. The Georgia Secretary of State provides the following website to check your voter registration status, and to register online: https://registertovote.sos.ga.gov/GAOLVR/welcome.do#no-back-button

On the November 7 election day, polls close for the Chattahoochee Hills municipal election at 7 p.m. as mandated. However, Fulton County has received approval to keep polls open for its elections until 8 p.m. Please share this information with Chatt Hills residents so they understand, Chatt Hills polls close at 7 p.m. on November 7.

CHATT HILLS OFFICERS SAVED LIFE – Another life was saved thanks to quick acting/responding officers and NARCAN, an FDA-approved nasal spray for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose.

The call came in as a person down and unconscious. Emergency police and fire personnel responded. Police, Officers Mike Lynch and Amber Graham, were first on the scene. They quickly learned that this was an overdose and retrieved the NARCAN. They were able to revive the patient enough to begin receiving treatment from fire personnel on their arrival. Based on the information at hand, another two minutes or so, the outcome of the patient’s survivability would have been much different.

While these officers and emergency personnel will say that it just what they do, it is much more than that. Their experience, training and compassion is something we are all fortunate to have on our team.

WATER MANAGEMENT PLAN – Darold and I attended the Intergovernmental Coordination for 2017 Water Management Plan hosted by the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District (MNGWPD) held at the Palmetto Train Depot in September.

The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District's Water Resource Management Plan brings together water supply and conservation, wastewater management, and watershed management into a single, integrated document. Combining these three plans enables the Metro Water District to look at water management in a holistic fashion, helping meet the future needs of the Metro Water District while protecting water quality and supply in the District as well as in downstream communities. The plan, developed with robust stakeholder input, includes a range of action steps that build on the Metro Water District's water conservation and management achievements. CITY HOSTED MEETING - The Mayor and Council hosted the South Fulton Municipal Association meeting/Dinner in September in the Council chambers. Representatives from Palmetto, Fairburn, Union City, College Park, and South Fulton were in attendance. The representatives received a demographic update from the Atlanta Regional Commission, a legislative update from Justin Kiron, Lobbyist for the Georgia Municipal Association and a Senior Services update from the Fulton County Senior Services Director, Dr. Pamela Roshell.

RICO ROAD PAVING –The contract award for the Rico Road Paving – Part A (TSPLOST Project) to ER Snell Contractor, Inc. is on the agenda for October 3 council meeting. The project would cover the area on Rico Rd from Campbellton Redwine Rd to South Fulton Parkway.

FULTON COUNTY CELL TOWER LOCATION – Joe Barasoain from Fulton County Emergency Services gave a presentation at the council work session on the benefits of a cell tower for the city. It would improve communications for public safety and potentially provide the structure for future internet service. The county would pay for the tower. Council suggested a public meeting as the next step. PARKS COMMISSION – Diana Wilson

• Volunteer Work: During the big storm a few months ago, this bridge at Cochran Mill Park was washed downstream. In the months since, volunteers have worked to drag the bridge upstream, set it in a higher location, tethered it with cable, and added railing. The bridge helps hikers and mountain bikers cross the stream. Horses use an alternative trail and ford the creek.

• Cochran Mill Park RTP Grant Update: The Parks Commission recommended an Interpretative Master Plan be done to fulfill the grant requirements per the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office. The City would have up to five years to complete this requirement. The city council reviewed a Memorandum of Agreement pertaining to this requirement and will vote on the MOU at its next council meeting.

MAYOR SENDS THANK YOU LETTER – On behalf of the City of Chattahoochee Hills, Mayor Reed sent the following thank you letter to Providence Baptist Church for the community support it provided during the September storms.

Re: Hurricane Irma response

Dear Dr. Tyre;

I just wanted to reach out to thank you and your entire church family for the amazing support that you and they have once again offered to the citizens of Chattahoochee Hills, and especially to the men and women of the Public Safety and Public Works crews that work on behalf of those citizens for the City.

I was involved in many meetings leading up to the storm, and was continually awed by the level of preparedness, thoughtfulness, and comprehensiveness of our response. Our team, led by Chief Brett, was so, so prepared for any eventuality. And David, Kay and so many others at your church had done so much work to be sure that – no matter what happened – we would be prepared to feed, house, and otherwise aid anyone affected or displaced by the storm, and to support all of the people who would be working to rescue or otherwise sustain them in their time of need.

We were blessed that the storm wasn’t as bad as it was forecast to be – but had it been, your congregation and your facility was ready. As it was, your feeding and otherwise caring for our hardworking Police, Fire and Public Works crews was a hugely appreciated by all of them – I’ve heard such love and gratitude!

Please accept my humblest thanks, to you, your volunteers, and the whole church; for your leadership, your support last week, and for all that the Providence Church family does, on behalf of a grateful City government and a grateful community. The good people of Providence Church represent the best of what unselfish giving brings to a community, and I love them for it.

Thank you, Tom Reed Mayor, City of Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia

Home Improvement: Building Permits & Inspections By Laurie Searle with Mike Morton, City Planner Article adapted from: www.investopedia.com

Did you know that a building permit and inspection is required for many home improvement projects?

Building permits ensure that the work done on your home and property is up to the standards set in the city’s ordinances. Inspections ensure you, and future property owners, that the work has been done property and up to code.

According to the National Association of Realtors, failing to obtain the proper permits may complicate or cancel the sale of your home. During the home inspection or appraisal process, homeowners may have to show that the proper permits are on file. If the lending bank learns that remodeling work was done without securing permits, it will likely not make the loan.

Failing to obtain the proper permits in Chatt Hills may result in the city issuing a citation. The owner would be required to get a permit. Permit fees would be doubled and completed work may have to be removed or disassembled if the inspector determines it does not meet code or if the inspector requires disassembly in order to inspect work that was covered up in the construction process (for example, drywall may need to be removed in order to expose plumbing for inspection).

Renovations that Require a Permit Fences Currently all fences require a permit except fences for agricultural use, though agricultural fences still must follow the fence regulations in the zoning ordinance. The zoning language covering fences is currently under review, though, and permitting requirements may change.

Footprint Changes Any alteration to the footprint of your home requires a permit. This includes bedrooms, room additions, most decks, garages and some sheds. Plans are required for most alterations. Sheds smaller than 120 square feet and Pole Barns smaller than 1600 square feet with no utilities do not require a permit.

New Windows Replacing an existing window doesn't require a permit, but cutting a hole for a new window or enlarging an existing opening does. This also includes skylights and new doors.

Plumbing/Electrical If you're installing new or removing existing plumbing, a permit is probably required. Any job that includes installing new electrical service to your home will also require a permit. Bathroom fixture replacement does not require a permit unless it requires piping alterations. Appliance replacement for plug-in appliances does not require a permit. Appliance replacement using permanent, hard-wired devices such as piping or wiring does require a permit.

Structural Changes Any project involving changes to the support system of the home requires a permit. This may include changes to load-bearing walls, decks, balconies and porches.

Siding Permits are required for new exterior siding, masonry, etc.

Water Heater If you want to replace your water heater, you will need a permit. You also need a permit changes to ventilation systems, fireplaces, stoves, or furnaces.

Total Cost Code Excerpt: Sec. 8-33. - Permits.

(a) Permit application.

(3) Minor repairs. Ordinary minor repairs, with a value of less than $2,500.00, may be made with the approval of the building official without a permit, provided that such repairs shall not violate any of the provisions of the construction codes.

Renovations That Do Not Require a Permit • Non-structural repairs: sidewalks & driveways, painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, counter tops • Electrical work: replacement of lamps, receptacles, switches • Plumbing: the clearing of stoppages or the repairing of leaks in pipes, valves or fixtures, and the removal and

reinstallation of water closets, faucets, sinks and lavatories • Mechanical work: the installation of portable cooling units or the replacement of any minor part

How Do I Get a Permit? For permitting information in Chattahoochee Hills, visit the city’s website: http://www.chatthillsga.us/departments/community-development/. If you have questions about what requires a building permit or inspection, contact the city planner, Mike Morton (770) 463-6578.

When are Inspections Done? During the renovation, inspections of the work will likely be required. For projects involving home additions, multiple inspections may be required. Once the work is completed, a final inspection takes place and the permit is issued.

How Much do Permits Cost? Permit fees are based on the value of materials and labor (does not include things like insurance or a contractor’s profit/markup). The actual formula changes based on the amount, so check with the city for a quote. Residential plan reviews are $100 for a single family residence smaller than 5000 feet and $250 for a single family residence larger than 5000 square feet. Plan reviews for additions and accessories is $50.

Sample fees: • Alteration valued at $20,000 – Fees: $346.25 plus $50 plan review • Accessory structure valued at $100,000 – fees: $1,018.75 plus $50 plan review • New Home valued at $250,000 – Fees: $1, 858.75 plus $100 plan review • New Home valued at $800,000 – Fees: $4683.75 plus plan review

Where can I get more information? The Community Development page on the city’s website has many resources for specific building projects. See: http://www.chatthillsga.us/departments/community-development/

The Planning Department is finalizing a draft of its new guide, “Building in the City of Chattahoochee Hills.” http://www.chatthillsga.us/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Building-in-the-city-Chatt-Hills.pdf
