Flier  DESCRIPTION:

Your employer puts you in charge of a news flier. He gives you the

information, a logo and one image to use. He asks you to createnew layout that will be attractive and more inviting to read.

PROGRAMS USED:Adobe Photoshop CS6, Adobe inDesign CS6

DATE:October 4, 2013

COURSE:COMM 130-02 Visual Media

INSTRUCTOR:Julie Peterson

OBJECTIVES:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.

Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.

Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Create a projectfolder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links

intact.

PROCESS:I really wanted to take a different approach to this first project ofthe semester. I started with a large, diagonal cross on the page,

then filled two of the legs of that cross with an image and thetitle. Then I placed the date, time, and place in the middle of the

cross. The body copy was designed and then rotated and placedaccordingly. The composition was tipped at a forty-five degreeangle to add visual interest and movement.

Montage  DESCRIPTION:

You are in charge of creating a new and fresh inspirational poster

using a composite of images and type. A photo montage involves

the blending of two or more images with text. You will create an

inspirational montage by using a layer mask to blend images. You

may use your own photos or gather some from the internet. Try

some of the websites under the additional learning heading. Look

over the assignment examples, then watch the video tutorials for

tips on how to blend images and perform more advanced editing

effects in Adobe Photoshop. Remember to write down your steps

as you work, include this process on the final evaluation form.

PROGRAMS USED:

Adobe Photoshop CC

DATE:

COURSE:

COMM 130-02 Visual Media

INSTRUCTOR:

Julie Peterson

OBJECTIVES:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images

together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate

typography. Choosing good quality images. Apply typography

principles. Unifying a piece with a consistent theme

PROCESS:

First, I started with my “canvas” texture image. I pulled it into an

8.5 x 11 inch new document and re-sized it to fit. I imported my

second image and added a slight Poster Edges filter to give the

image a “painted” look. Then I started masking my second image

using some high quality watercolor brushes of my own creation.

I added several dashes of yellow, pink, and purple behind the

second image to give it a little extra something. After the images

were successfully blended together, I added the type with a very

subtle texture and drop shadow.

Logo  DESCRIPTION:

A company/individual approaches you and asks you to design

their logo. They leave it up to you to do some research for insighon what type of logo would best communicate their brand. They

ask you to design three, completely different, variations for theirconsideration.

PROGRAMS USED:Adobe Illustrator CC

DATE:November 2, 2013

COURSE:COMM 130-02 Visual Media

INSTRUCTOR:Julie Peterson

OBJECTIVES:Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. Do

not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs. Use onlythe tools of Illustrator. Setting up a professional display for thecompany. Arrange three logos on an 8.5 x 11 vertical page / .5"

margins and add the company name in simple type at the top ofpage. Getting feedback from outside sources. Ask ten people toselect their favorite logo. List the results, along with your favorite

your blog post.

PROCESS:I started this project on a piece of paper with a pencil. I startedsketching to come up with creative ideas for a photography logo

for a company called “Visions by Vanessa.” I started with the “V”

for “Visions” and “Vanessa” and experimented with the serifs onmany different types of serif fonts. The second logo started with camera, and then after realizing the lens could easily become aneye, trasformed into a brandmark. The third one was less obviou

and took me a while to get, but using negative space to create acamera was a brilliant idea.

Stationery  DESCRIPTION:

You are asked to design a new logo and stationery items. Create a

new logo, not one that was used in the last project, then design abusiness card and letterhead.

PROGRAMS USED:Adobe Illustrator CC

DATE:November 9, 2013

COURSE:COMM 130-02 Visual Media

INSTRUCTOR:Julie Peterson

OBJECTIVES:Use The basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logoto fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos

or use your previous designs. Design consistent layouts for a

business card and letterhead. Use your new logo to design twostationery items with consistent design. Letterhead: 8.5 x 11.Business card: 3.5 x 2. Apply typography rules keeping small

copy. Learning to keep thing simple by having watermarks anddrop shadows light and white space. Applying contact informationInclude name, address, phone, and email on each piece. Use

periods, bullets, or spaces in phone #; No parentheses/ hyphens.

PROCESS:I started with my logo. I drew a fox with a scarf on it, and then Ichanged it up a little bit and added some pizazz. I decided to go

with a very simple letterhead because it matters very little. It’s

what is written as a letter that matters. The receiver will hardlyeven notice the watermark. I thought it needed to look clean andprofessional, so I gave it lots of white space and an even colorscheme.

Web

page

DESCRIPTION:A potential employer requests a web page of one of your logos

with a description of the design process that demonstrates basicHTML and CSS skills.

PROGRAMS USED:Adobe Dreamweaver CS6

DATE:November 24, 2013

COURSE:COMM 130-02 Visual Media

INSTRUCTOR:Julie Peterson

OBJECTIVES:Size (300 – 500 pixels ) and optimize an original logo as a .pngfor a web page. Write content to describe the process of creating

your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a

web page using HTML to display the logo and content. Acquirea working knowledge of HTML. Acquire a working knowledge ofCSS. Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in

a zipped folder to attach as one file.

PROCESS:I started with the html and the skeleton of the page. I decidedon a three-column layout with a “jumbotron” or big lead headingwith lesser important things in the columns. After I’d finished the

content of the page, I started on the CSS. I changed every aspectof the html with new styles of my own. I used a grid layout to

position the columns, and I made the logo and leader text appear

big and important. The CSS was really long, but it looks and feelsgolden.

Brochure  DESCRIPTION:

Your employer wants you to design a full-color, folding brochure

to help promote the company product, service or location. Youmay use any folding brochure design you want. Brochures come

in all sizes and shapes. Any duplex (two-sided) folding documentcan be considered a brochure. Therefore the size parameters forthis project are wide open. The purpose of your brochure may be

informational or advertising. You may choose any topic, from newskateboard styles, to the latest sports car, to a family newsletter.

Make this something you enjoy.

PROGRAMS USED:Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe inDesign CC

DATE:December 7, 2013

COURSE:COMM 130-02 Visual Media

INSTRUCTOR:

Julie Peterson

OBJECTIVES:Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an originalcompany logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality imagesWrite at least 250 words of original copy with at least three

paragraphs. Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex color.

PROCESS:I thought of doing a photography brochure because I have a wholebunch of photos just sitting around on my computer with nothing

to do. I came up with the triangle-fold layout. I like it because it’s

streamlined, it’s modern, and it’s trendy. Placing the images wasthe most difficult thing to do, because of the triangle shapes, but itturned out really nice. I went with a mostly black and white layoutbecause I think black and white photography is more meaningful

than color photography. Black and white went well with thephotography.

PROCESS:I started with my logo. I drew a fox with a scarf on it, and then Ichanged it up a little bit and added some pizazz. I took a very

simple approach to this business card, making sure that it was

not too fancy to distract from the beautiful logo design and colorscheme. The whitespace was included to make the card clean, clear, and easily readable. There is no question about who thisperson works for.

DESCRIPTION:

You are applying for a job at a photography studio and you need to

demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. You will

submit a good quality photo with some specific editing techniques

Your potential employer wants to see if you understand how to

get a good, sharp exposure with nice composition, then also

perform basic edits, plus crop and size the image on a page. It wil

be vital to follow the editing, cropping and sizing instructions to

demonstrate the skills needed for this job. You will submit a printed

8.5×11 page with the cropped image, plus send a link to your blog

post that shows the original, unedited image, an edited version

that is cropped to a square, and a final project with the edited

image on a white 8.5×11 page.

PROGRAMS USED:

OBJECTIVES:

Learn basic photography skills. Adjust image brightness, contrast,

hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion

of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image. Use a

filter or colorize a portion of the image.

PROCESS:

This is a picture of my room, specifically my audio workstation. I

used the rule of thirds to bring out the keyboard and the laptop,

the two most important things in the shot. I used Photoshop to

desaturate everything but the laptop, which really pops because

it’s the only thing that was blue in the shot. I boosted the saturatio

on the laptop (+43), and then did a minor curves adjustment to

add contrast to the black and white.
