Matthew came with 25 years Waldorf school teaching, leadership and research experience to discuss a topic he is passionate about - assessment. As a community we are lucky to have such passionate and thoughtful people who can re-imagine what sounds like a dry subject and enliven it with spirit and potential. A key point he made was that we must bring conscious thought to our observations of the children in front of us and creatively respond to what we assess is needed by the children. This assessment allows us then to meet the children in a healthy way and in various ways supports their journey and purpose on Earth. How can we do that? Matthew cited various indications from Rudolf Steiner to show everyone present that what we are called to do as teachers is: have an understanding of child development, use and develop the art of teaching to deliver subjects and strengthen skills that engage and inspire children but don’t overburden them and cause fear adopt a meditative focus on the children we work with. It was an inspiring talk. Parents can be reassured that the school is striving to enliven and develop ourselves to ensure we deliver the best Waldorf education we can. Steiner Education Australia sponsored Matthew’s visit and we are grateful for that support and also that we could host a number of staff from other Steiner schools in WA. Last week’s High School Music Night, was a feast of talent for everyone present. There were delicate, romantic songs which tasted light and bright; there were punchy songs which had a little spice; there were classical pieces that filled all our senses and there were loud brash pieces that overwhelmed and excited us for just a moment – like wasabi! How awesome to see the Class 8 to Class 12s in a professional music venue performing with such confidence and having fun. Thank you to everyone in the music department for organizing the event and giving students, teachers and parents alike such a positive experience. Especially thanks to Claire Williamson for so strongly championing the development of music in our school and literally giving so many students a voice! Our school OPEN DAY and FAIR is less than two weeks away! Please take the chance to engage and enjoy. It’s a super opportunity to celebrate and showcase our precious school. Even things of value wither and die if not tended to and loved. A reminder to parents that there is no place for Woolworths Ooshies, and other plastic figurines in our school. These plastic objects and other toys don’t align to our approach to child development. Trading activities are especially not encouraged. Please be supportive of the ethos of the school in this regard. EARLY CHILDHOOD WOODWORK IN EARLY CHILDHOOD The Swans have been doing woodwork. They chose a tree branch from a selection of sizes and colors to cut a button from, then learnt to saw and used a hand drill to put two holes in it, with lots of sanding to smooth the tool marks and some finishing beeswax their buttons will be sewn onto their woven bags.

PRIMARY SCHOOL

FROM THE COORDINATOR We have a strong community at the Perth Waldorf School and this is due to the way that parents and teachers work together. Close collaboration and communication between parents and between parents and teachers is really important. The education itself needs the interest and support of parents and the children will always benefit when the collaboration is mutually supportive. Thank you to our class carers, members of the P&F and all of you who volunteer to support us constantly. Each week the school hosts a number of activities and groups to gather and create or participate in. During the termly teacher parent evenings the teachers will present aspects of the curriculum and child development. Discussions may centre on upcoming camps or festivals and it is a time to strengthen that class social bond on an adult level. Please attend these information sharing and group events. Teachers will also make themselves available at other times so please check in with your teachers if you need to speak to them after school. The communication book that is outside Class 1-5 is the way to relay messages in the mornings or to ask for an appointment to see the teacher. Much effort is put into Open Day when we get to open the classrooms and celebrate the children’s work, the community and the wonderful school we have. Thank you being willing to contribute and actively be a part of this important event in our calander. Lisa Payne - Primary School Coordinator. CLASS 4 HORSE RIDING CAMP PHOTOS

CLASS 6 MAIN LESSON LIGHT - BEGINNING PHYSICS IN CLASS 6

As part of our main lesson on Light the class and parents met at the Bibra Lake jetty one morning at 6:30am to observe the changing light from dusk to sunrise. When studying Physics we follow the sequence: Day 1 - observe, describe, draw, Day 2 - record observations, reflect on what has been experienced, revealed, about the pheonema. The students’ drawings and descriptions reflected their attentive watching on that beautiful, cold early morning by the lake. It is so refreshing to come to physics through thoughtful observation, free of pre-formed concepts and terms. We were able to explore light’s effects and qualities before arriving at findings or conclusions. A deepening of wonder is our aim as this underlies all grasping of physics, it’s patterns and laws.

‘a child one summers’ evening soaked a glass jar in the reeling sun

hoping to keep, when day was done this host, this pulse of light, beside his bed.’ (From ‘The Glass Jar’ by Gwen Harwood.)

ARLO STONE - Sunrise at Bibra Lake On arrival at Bibra Lake I noticed spectacular bands of colour acoss the sky and lake. The trees on the far side of the lake were dark, looming shapes. Many different species of bird heralded the coming sun. Ducks wadled along like important businessmen, while willy-wagtails and blue wrens hopped around in the reeds. A thick grey mist was seemingly blown away by bright sun now appearing over the treetops. Musk ducks and swans began diving for breakfast as the sky grew blue, and other clouds faded. COURTNEY STEVENS - 6:30am On Arrival at Bibra Lake the water was millpond still and wreathed in mist and fog. We noticed the waning crescent moon, reflected perfectly on the water and the brightening reds, oranges and yellows that tinted the sky as it got brighter and the stars disappeared one by one. At 7:00am the sky was bright and we knew that sunrise (and breakfast) were not far away. The colours had brightened, but were not as rich as they were at dawn. By 7:15am the sun had risen fully and it was time for a breakfast of bun, bacon, tomato, sausage, egg and mushroom. De-lici-ous. CROI DALEY When we arrived at Bibra Lake the sky was black as obsidian, not the slightest bit of light was to be seen. The points of the crescent moon, the horns, were pointing to the west which meant it was morning. After about half an hour the sky was banded with beautiful colours streaking across the heavens. Black silhouettes of trees dotted along the horizon were shaded by the mist on the shore. Val Ashman - Class 6 Teacher

CLASS 11/12 ELECTIVE PLAY HOTEL PARADISO

It was indeed a privilege to work along side our Class 11&12 Drama Elective students these last weeks. Their final performances of ‘Hotel Paradiso’ were an absolute joy to experience. I thank each and every one of them for the energy, passion and incredible commitment they brought to the play process. Thank you also to our wonderful community and staff that supported our young people so beautifully. A huge thank you to Glenis, Matt, Nichola and Anna for their work with the students behind the scenes and for making the production a visually beautiful and entertaining one. Our young people were indeed blessed to have their energy, care, and insights. A big thanks also to Emma who helped during after school rehearsals and to Paul Dennis, Chris and Deb for taking such great photos. Thanks also to Jahne, Cameron and David who have generously given hours and hours of their time to assist with set process. Thank you also to Christiane, Anita and Sita for giving their time, care and energy to support. But most of all I would like to thank our beautiful Class 11 & 12 Drama Elective students.
