International Women’s Day is recognised by the United Nations and is observed around the world annually on the 8 March. This year International Women’s week commences the

week of 4th March 2013.

Today on the 5 March 2013, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2nd Paceworking Conference celebrating International Women’s Week. The theme for this year is ‘Agents of Change: Women Organisations, Women Leaders and Mothers.’ This theme represents an important cross-section of our community and women who make a difference for the benefit of others. Our speakers are all role models who through their leadership, expertise and work have made a significant impact to the lives of others. Our distinguished panel of speakers will inform us about their work or the organisations that they represent and will share their personal experiences, challenges and successes.We also have speakers who represent and support the interests of Widows. One of the aims of this event is to learn how we can assist Widows in need and change some of the perceptions that exist in some sections of society. This promises to be another exhilarating, empowering and engaging event. Have a great time today as we not only celebrate International Women’s Week but it marks a significant milestone being the 40th event hosted by Paceworking since its inception. I thank all the men and women attending today (particularly the Widows). I also thank Councillor Michael Situ for hosting us at this venue. DR. KAREN BREWER is British

born, she spent most of her formative years in

Francophone Africa. She studied law at Dakar University (Senegal),

Montpellier University, France (where she obtained her Masters

in Public Law) and the University of Paris I (Pantheon – Sorbonne)

where she completed her Doctorat d’Etat in 1993 with distinction.

She worked at the Law Society of England and Wales from 1987-

1998.

Since 1998 she has been Secretary General of the Commonwealth

Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association (CMJA) promoting judicial

independence and standards in the Commonwealth. She has

written a number of articles on the separation of powers, human

rights, especially women’s rights and judicial independence.

In 2008, she received a Remember Africa Award for her contribution

to Upholding Democracy and Peace in Africa.

Karen has been responsible for a number of projects to promote

the rights of women and the girl-child, in particular the formulation

of a Gender and Human Rights Toolkit and the work undertaken

in assisting the Commonwealth Secretariat to develop its Gender

Equality Plan of Action. She was part of the Commonwealth

Expert Group on Gender and Human Rights in the run up to the

Commonwealth Women’s Affairs Ministers Meeting in Fiji in 2004.

She currently represents the CMJA on the Commonwealth’s

Cybercrime Working Group.

Since March 2010 she has been a Trustee of Women’s Rights

International, the campaigning organisation which promotes more

awareness of the plight of widows across the world.

Mrs Folorunsho Alakija - President of the Rose of Sharon Foundation,

Nigeria is a philanthropist with a sincere desire to

help the needy, a fashion icon with an infallible

sense of style, a businesswoman who has broken

many uncharted territories, a friend in deed, a

loving wife, a caring mother and grandmother. Educated in Europe,

she first embarked on a career in banking, until she took a leap of

faith and followed her heart and creative calling to establish her

own business in the Nigerian fashion industry. Supreme Stitches rose

to prominence and fame within a few years, and, as Rose of Sharon

House of Fashion, became a household name.

As National President and lifelong Trustee of the Fashion Designers

Association of Nigeria (FADAN), she left an indelible mark,

promoting Nigerian Culture through fashion and style. Ever the

entrepreneur, Mrs Alakija has forayed into related businesses: The

Rose of Sharon Prints & Promotions specialises in monogramming

and screen printing for promotional and gift items, while Digital

Reality Print Ltd specialises in highly technical digital large format

printing.

She remains the only female in that industry to date. She has just

included a direct imaging paper printing press to coincide with her

60th birthday. She oversees the Rose of Sharon Group as the Group

Managing Director and she is also Executive Vice Chairman of her

family’s oil exploration and production business.

Looking back on a lifetime of achievements, Folorunso’s foremost

desire is to give glory to God and to share the secret of her

success. A Christian since 1991, she draws her strength from her

unfaltering belief in the power and glory of God. In a sincere desire

to give to those in need in the name of the Lord, her philanthropic

endeavours, such as the Rose of Sharon Foundation, continue

to positively influence her native land by empowering widows

and their families as well as orphans to be successful through

educational programmes and scholarships.

At 61, Mrs Alakija oversees her business and philanthropic enterprises

working tirelessly with boundless energy, and follows her evangelical

calling with unbridled devotion, hoping to inspire the younger

generation with her motto “whatever is worth doing at all is worth

doing well”

She lives in Lagos, Nigeria with Modupe Alakija her beloved

husband of 36 years, and their four sons and grandchild.

Beverley De-Gale OBE -

Co-Founder African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) is the co-founder (alongside her partner Orin Lewis), of the leading UK Leukaemia charity, the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust The ACLT was founded in

June 1996, after Beverley and Orin received the devastating news that their 8 year old son Daniel De-Gale, needed a life saving bone marrow transplant in order to win his 3 year battle against Leukaemia.

When confronted by heart-wrenching facts and figures it became apparent to Beverley of the need for an organisation to galvanise awareness and increase the number of donors. The racially specific characteristics of bone marrow mean that compatible donors (for African/Caribbean sufferers), can only be found within the black or mixed race population. In 1996 there were just 550 such people on the UK bone marrow registers – this translated into a 1 in 250,000 chance of finding a donor for Daniel. Beverley channeled the anxiety of discovering her son had a form of cancer into the goal of creating a better future for people suffering with Leukaemia and other blood-related disorders. To achieve this, the charity formed to raise awareness to

The Worshipful Mayor of the London Borough of Enfield.

Councillor Kate Anolue

is the current Mayor of the London Borough of

Enfield. Prior to that she served as the Deputy Mayor

of the London Borough of Enfield. She represents

Upper Edmonton Ward and was first elected to the Council in

2002. Councillor Anolue is also a qualified lawyer and a registered

midwife with over 35 years experience. She is a Nigerian and hails

from Nanka town in Anambra State, south-eastern Nigeria.

In 1972 less than a year after her arrival to the UK from Nigeria she

gained admission to North Middlesex University Hospital. This was the

start of her nursing career which had been her father’s wish for her.

She attained her nursing professional qualifications and became a

midwifery sister at the North Middlesex Hospital in 1984.

If midwifery was her vocation, it could be argued that politics and

working within the community became her mission and inspiration

throughout. She is a Governor of two schools in Enfield, a Member

of the racial equality council in Enfield, a panel Member of Health

Scrutiny and Vice Chairman of the Association of British Nigerian

Councillors.

Councillor Anolue has four children, two boys and two girls. She was

tragically widowed when the youngest child was only 18 months

old. Today these children are all graduates and working.

Celine E Loader – Consultant /

Special Advisor, Central Bank of Nigeria

After over 20 years in the UK where she studied

and built a successful career, including 8 years

with the software giant Microsoft, and 4 years

running her own company, Aspire Media, publisher

of the award-winning ASPIRE Magazine, she returned to Nigeria

enable potential donors to come forward and donate, making them, potentially a lifesaver.For the past 17 years, Beverley has devoted herself to the cause of improving such steep odds and the ACLT has increased the number of black and mixed race donors to over 40,000. This has lowered the statistical odds of finding a compatible donor to 1 in 100,000.

In 1999 Daniel finally beat Leukaemia and received a life saving bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor which allowed him to lead a full and active life for several years with his family and friends including becoming a graduate in Sports Physiotherapy at London Metropolitan University. However sadly October 2008 Daniel passed away to an unrelated illness in October 2008 aged 21. Through donation drives such as The Daniel De-Gale Blood Donation Month, Beverley and the ACLT “honour his indelible legacy”.

occupying senior level positions in both private sector and public

institutions, where she used her skills, extensive experience and

natural abilities to help transform brands and drive growth.

In Microsoft UK, she honed her skills in Business Strategy and

Marketing in roles such as Business Analyst, Strategic Planning

Manager, Internal Communications Manager, and later Regional

Product Marketing Manager (covering 15 countries in Africa &

Middle East).

In 2006, she was called to Nigeria to head the Brand &

Communication Division of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), one

of Africa’s largest banking groups. She rose to Group Director,

Marketing & Corporate Relations and would hold this position until

2009 when she was head hunted and appointed Chief Marketing

Officer of First Bank of Nigeria PLC. She is currently a Consultant/

Special Adviser on Strategic Communication & PR for the Central

Bank of Nigeria (CBN), while also pursuing other passions in the

creative industry, specifically Television and Movie projects.

yINKA ESSIEN – Founder of a Christian

Support Group for African and Caribbean Widows

is a Pensions Manager at Oval Pension Solutions.

She is a mother of 3 boys who was sadly widowed

on 12 August 2005. Two and a half years on she

started the Christian Support group for African and

Caribbean women. This is a group that caters for widows old and

new. They come to share their experiences and be themselves in a

group that understands them. Over the years she has come to really

know that God is truly the husband to the Widow and the father to

the fatherless through her personal experience and the experience

of other Widows. She has always believed that God is in control

regardless.

Perez Ochieng – CEO of Sahara Communities

Abroad. SACOMA was established as a social enterprise in January

2000 and gives advice, guidance and accredited training to

people from Sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere, particularly

Kiswahili speaking communities living in the UK.

As the Founder and CEO of SACOMA, Perez has overseen the

growth of SACOMA from a volunteer led organisation to an

established and credible enterprise. Perez is a Social Entrepreneur

with extensive experience in project management.

She has contributed to numerous SME start-ups in Africa through

International Relations, Trade negotiations, coaching and

consultancy services. She is a qualified Chartered Accountant and

Chartered Director who originally worked in the private sector. She

is also a Mother and Wife and is committed to challenging and

equipping people to achieve their full potential.
