If Solomon Could Dream, So Can I
It’s hard not to be impressed with Solomon’s response to God’s invitation to request his heart’sdesire. I’d like to think that I would ask for something worthy like wisdom. My dreams though, areusually a bit more concrete and God hasn’t offered me Solomon’s choice. He has given me you toconsult. Maybe providing you with some of my aspirations for Padre Serra will help them to come true?
I wish that parents could come for meetings and not have to worry about their children. We needa children’s playground with a fun jungle gym for them to climb on, with safe buffered flooringunderneath. It would need to be well-lit, walled and gated so that security wouldn’t be a concern.
People have told me that they’ve lived in Camarillo for a couple of years before they figured outthere was a Catholic church on Upland Road. I wish that people driving by knew that we were here, behind the beautiful forest of trees that makes our parking lot one of, if not the most beautiful in thecity. Even if you know there is a sign saying “Padre Serra Parish,” it’s very hard to find it. I’ve seenelectric signs that would not only announce our presence, but be able to give reminders to thecommunity about retreats, picnics, speakers and the like. Initial investigations suggest that the electricsign itself, before structures or wiring is considered, runs about $20,000. I’m dreaming big here.
I notice that whenever we open up space for young people, they fill it. I very much wish that ouryouth minister, Brett, had a place close to his office that was comfortable and dedicated to providing asafe, fun haven for the young people of Camarillo. It would need to be big enough that 40, 60 or 100young folk could gather for meaningful discussions and learning about the Lord … or just relax withsome foosball. Now that we have the Serra Center for large gatherings, the Capistrano room seems likean obvious place, especially since Brett’s office is right off the room. I dream of a time that theCapistrano rooms could be dedicated to youth … but they are needed for our two choirs, which leadsme to my next wish…
On a weekly basis, chairs are set up and taken down on Tuesdays for the 11:00am choir, and thenagain on Thursdays for the 9:00am choir. Music binders are carted back and forth between storage, theCapistrano rooms and the church,. It would be lovely if we didn’t need to put as much time into theseperipheral efforts as we do. This leads me to wish for a choir room, behind the church building andattached to it on the Northwest corner, adjacent to the parking lot, off to the far side of the prayergarden. In this room the choir’s chairs would always be set up, their music could be kept for them, handy for both practice and Mass, acoustics could be madeoptimal for their practice, and they could have a quickrehearsal adjacent to the church on Sunday mornings beforeMass. This would serve both the needs of the choirs and free upthe Capistrano room for extended youth opportunities. Iparticularly love this dream.
Do you have room in your hearts for any of thesedreams. Any way we can make them come true?
Siempre adelante!

What is Faith Formation? One hundred years ago it was known as CCD, Confraternity ofChristian Doctrine. A few decades back CCD became ReligiousEducation and later morphed into the term Faith Formation. FaithFormation is instruction in the Catholic faith for children and theirparents. At Padre Serra, Faith Formation is about growing inrelationship with God through Jesus; growing in relationship witheach other, peers, other families and people in need; growing anemotional and intellectual connection with the beauty and richnessof our Catholic faith teachings and traditions given to us by Jesussuch that we seek to live a Christian life-style; and finally, growing adeeper sense of confidence, integrity and love of ourselves tobecome the person that God made us to be. We do this in a variety ofage-appropriate ways from pre-school through high school. Lastyear, 648 children and teens were ministered to by 100 faithfulvolunteers every week after school. Join the movement!!

Mission AppealThe Most Rev. Arulappan Amalraj, bishop of Ootacamund, India, will be visiting our parish on the weekend of August 2 and 3.The overview and mission work of the diocese of Ootacamund:The diocese Ootacamund (referred to as “Ooty”) is located in thesouthern part of India, close to the tip of the country. The totalpopulation of the diocese is 1.6 million, but the Catholic populationis only 85,000. The rest of the population is predominately Hindu. The total number of priests is 128 for 64 parishes. Most of theparishes are located in rural and mission areas, and totally depend onthe subsidy from the diocese to survive. The mission of the diocese is focused on building the Kingdom ofGod in spiritual and social dimensions. Most people eke out a livingon wages of $2.50 a day as farmers who work in tea estates and otherfarm lands. The diocese is plagued by high rates of illiteracy, povertyand unemployment. We are trying to lift up the most vulnerable inour society. The difficult conditions here hit children the hardest. They either leave school to work with their parents to support thefamilies or stay behind to continue their education, where theybecome “semi-orphans.” With no one to care for them, they turn tothe Church/diocese for support. There are currently seven orphanages for 600 children. To meet theneeds of the “semi-orphans” and other orphan children, the OotyDiocese makes education at all levels a priority. The annual cost foreducating an orphan is $250, which includes food and clothing. Ourmission appeal in your parish will help us to meet the needs of thepoorest of the poor in my diocese of Ooty. Your missionary zeal and generous support will be appreciatedprofoundly by the diocese of Ootacamund, India. I assure you of my prayers,With best wishes and blessings,+ Bishop A. Amalraj
