Within this programme, the following modules can be taken as a ’stand-alone’ course (15 academic credits awarded), or can be recognised towards a PGCert, PG Diploma or Masters in Advanced Paediatrics, Paediatric Critical Care: Paediatric Critical Care: General Paediatric Critical Care: Cardiac Paediatric Critical Care: Transport If working towards a masters award, candidates will be expected to complete compulsory modules in Evidence-based Child Health, Research Methodology and Statistics. These dynamic and interactive modules take the learner through the fundamentals of paediatric critical care. They aim to enhance knowledge, critical appraisal, research skills, and readiness for careers in acute paediatrics, in particular the care of critically ill and deteriorating children. Students will have the opportunity to undertake a supervised dissertation or research project in Paediatric Critical Care if they wish. The modules will be delivered by a skilled faculty of national and international experts. The content is matched to UK PICM curricula and those available internationally. Course content will help the learner in developing the knowledge and understanding that is required to undertake EPIC (European Paediatric/Neonatal Intensive Care) Diploma, run and administered by ESPNIC (European Society of Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care). Who is this for? These modules are appropriate for multi professional candidates currently in clinical roles within acute paediatric environments. The learning from this module will also provide an excellent foundation for any candidates looking to enter a paediatric critical care training programme (e.g. RCPCH GRID) or looking to develop the skills and knowledge to work within paediatric HDU (e.g. via the RCPCH SPIN module). The cardiac critical care module is additionally suitable for candidates working or with an interest in paediatric cardiology. The highly practical transport module is designed to be of relevance to general paediatricans, paediatric critical care specialists, anaesthetists and allied health professionals who have an interest in the assessment, resuscitation, stabilisation and transport of the critically ill child. PAEDIATRIC CRITICAL CARE:CARDIAC

This module will aim to cover:• The basis of cardiac disease in children as an introduction

to paediatric cardiology and cardiac intensive care to include embryology and physiology

• Paediatric heart failure management• Congenital cardiac lesions, including the postnatal presentation

and early management relevant to the general practitioner. • Specific lesions to be covered will include left heart obstruction,

mixing lesions, left to right shunt, right heart obstruction and patent ductus

• An introduction to the concepts and practice of cardiopulmonary bypass• Arrhythmia management• The ethics and future directions of cardiac intensive care medicine

PAEDIATRIC CRITICAL CARE: TRANSPORT

During the course, you will cover:• The development of a functional multi-disciplinary team • The assessment of the critically ill child• Resuscitation and stabilisation of all common paediatric emergencies

with hands on experience • The practical aspects of critical care transport and transport triage • An introduction to transport crew resource management • A framework for debriefing clinical events• The principles behind governance and safety, quality,

benchmarking and service improvement when out in the field• Introduction to aeronautical transport principles

Delivery will be by:• Face to face interactive lectures (delivered over a week long period at the

GOSH Institute of Child health within the summer term of the academic year).• Small group seminars and tutorials• Simulated clinical learning sessions• One to one preparatory tutorial pre presentations• Peer and tutor reviewed poster presentation• Distance learning and course material provided via Moodle• Final assessment will be via a literature-researched, Critically Appraised Topic:

students will be evaluated on their poster submission and peer-group oral presentation two months later.

PAEDIATRIC CRITICAL CARE:GENERAL

During the module, topics will include:• Organisation of UK Paediatric Critical Care (PCC)

services including quality, benchmarking and service improvement • Physiological basis for critical illness • Advanced pharmacology: drug choices, indications and side effects • Organ support on the paediatric critical care unit:

the physiological need and physics of therapy• Right line, right place, right time• Planning care for children with complex multisystem disease• Human factors in critical care environments

and crew resource management• Current ‘Hot Topics’ in evidence-based PCC• End of life care

Delivery will be by:• Face to face seminars (5 mandatory days over 3 months

- delivered at the UCL GOSH Institute of Child Health)• Self-directed learning and literature review with distance

learning support via Moodle• Peer review two critically appraised topics within module group

with seminar peer presentation of Critically Appraised Topic• Option for supervision of candidates undertaking

dissertation/research project within Paediatric Critical Care• Final assessment will be via a literature-researched, Critically

Appraised Topic: students will be evaluated on their written submission and peer-group oral presentation
