Central venous catheters (Seldinger technique)

Single lumen catheters for central venous access are used for:

• Administration of drugs• Central venous pressure monitoring• Transfusion• Parenteral nutrition

Multi-lumen catheters for central venous access (subclavian, jugular or femoral) simplify multiline infusions and avoid “bolus effects”. They are used in the following situations:

• Simultaneous administration of incompatible drugs• Administration of amines• Administration of antibiotics• Measuring the central venous pressure • Blood volume expansion• Parenteral nutrition• Infusion of hyperosmolar solutions (> 700 mOsm)

Central venous catheters for tunnelisation

(Seldinger technique)

The tunnelisation technique offers:

• When accessing the internal jugular vein, a 3-fold reduction of the risk of catheter associated sepsis in ICU patients, and a 4-fold reduction of the risk of catheter associated septicemia

• When accessing the femoral vein, a 4-fold reduction of the risk of sepsis and a 3-fold reduction of the risk of catheter associated septicemia

• Protection of the puncture site with an occlusive dressing• Improvement of patient comfort
