DEACONS DIARY
The Autumnal Equinox started on Wednesday
September 22. This is the time of year when the
Sun lies directly above the Earth’s equator.
Normally our days our cooler, but this fall has
started warmer – a definite reprieve from the heat
we had this summer.
For us at Broadway, it is a start back into the
sanctuary. We opened on Sept12th to “Rally
Sunday” at 10:30. It was the largest in person
congregation we have seen since March 2020.
Hallelujah and welcome back! Thanks to our
change ringing quartet! They played outside on
the steps before church, calling people in and
played in the sanctuary at the end.
I thank you for your support of your church and
for the ongoing commitment to meeting us over
zoom and in the sanctuary. It is wonderful to see
people again.
This past Sunday, Charlene preached on one of
my favourite scriptures: Romans 12:1-9. It takes
me back to a Bible study in May 1987. (Which of
you were with me?!) As we come together as
God’s people may we look at the gifts that God
has given us and how we might each offer
ourselves as sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God.
In looking for something to write about this
month, I went to the Daily Bread. A blog by
David Roper on Sept18/21 quoted C.S. Lewis:
“There are no ordinary people. You have never
talked with a mere mortal.” Put another way,
every human contact has eternal consequences.
Every day we have opportunities to make a
difference in the lives of people around us
through the quiet witness of a faithful and gentle
life or through encouraging words to a weary
soul. Never underestimate the effect of a Christ-
life on others.
We move into the next phase of Launch – that
being to come up with ideas of how we can be
Missional and Evangelical, how we can share the
Gospel and how we can accept and welcome
people where they are and have conversations to
explore Jesus with them. If you are interested in
joining with the 20+ people to have a
conversation, please let me know. I will be happy
to include you. We are expecting to have 2 – 2-
hour sessions. They will be on zoom and will
include many breakout rooms.
With our thoughts on moving forward, the
Worship Planning Committee met on Tuesday
Sept14th, and the Deacons met on Thursday Sept.

16th to do the work of the church.
The Worship Planning has started preparing the
services through the fall to the beginning of the
new year. If you are interested in participating
during the fall or during Advent, please don’t be
shy. We would love your participation, whether
with a hymn or song request, a song played or
sung, a scripture, or a sermon, please contact
Kent, Bob, Raymond, Susan, Jon or Sheila.
The Deacons held a long meeting this month. In
addition to our finances, the Deacons discussed
the use of our space and the need to continue
with Zoom so that we are still connecting with
those who can’t join in person. We continued
with how we can acknowledge the original
peoples of this land, our care in the community,
the prayer walk and how we can let people know
we are praying for them, our connection to our
church members and the next steps of Launch.
We discussed programs that might happen, and
how we go about searching for a pastor. We are
concerned with finding an administrative
assistant to step in as Alice-Marie steps down
from the job. And we are thankful for those
willing to serve.
On Sunday Sept26th, we will take time to thank
Alice-Marie Dyck and her commitment to us and
the years of service she has given in the position
of Church Administrator. We thank her for her
thoughtfulness, her attentiveness and willingness
to step in over the years. We pray God’s blessing
on her and Bill.
It is the Autumnal Equinox and God’s Son lies
directly above us – and we shall follow Him as
we move forward. Each of us has a different gift
that we are encouraged to freely give. I continue
to pray for God’s guidance as we move forward
in our mission at the corner of Honeyman and
Walnut this fall.
In Christ,
Sheila Mitchell-Dueck
Chair, Deacons Board.
COMMISSION CONNECTIONS
TREASURER’S FINANCIAL REPORT AS
AT AUGUST 31, 2021
August 2021 shows a NET INCOME of $4,283.
This is the result of Net Revenue of $7,560 and
Net Expenses of $3,277.
Our Year-to-Date Net Income is at $42,276 but
we have also received $15,000 in MB Bridge

into consideration the $15,000 from the MB
Bridge COVID Grant money, our YTD Net

$27,276.
We want to thank Alice-Marie and Tina, our
bookkeeper, for keeping our finances in check. A
continued reminder that all invoices and personal
expense claims should be submitted through the

RECONNECTIONS
(selections from September services and other pieces
of information which bear repeating)
IN SYMPATHY
The sympathy of the congregation is extended to
Donna McCann and David Thomas in the
passing of Donna’s brother, Les McCann, on
Sept. 11th. Les was a long time, active member
of Broadway-First and will be missed not only
by his family but also by all of us who knew
him. He was a nature enthusiast, storyteller, and
bread baker extraordinaire and always willing to
lend a hand or extend one in greeting to
newcomers at the church. Please hold Les’ wife
Helen, nephew James, niece Andrea and great
nephew Justin in your thoughts and prayers at
this time as well. A Funeral service for Les will
be held at the church on Oct. 6th at 2 pm.
Someone from the family will be looking after
live streaming the service for those who may
wish to participate but not in person. We may
need some help in the narthex with greeting
people as they enter and offering masks etc. at
Page 5
the start of the service as well as help ushering
and tidying the sanctuary and narthex. Please
contact Jon Hunt ASAP if you are able to help.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Ken and
Jeannine Eisner and their extended family on the
passing of Ken’s sister, Dianne Milton, on Sept.
12th in Winnipeg MB.
We also hold in prayer, Tony Rempel and his
extended family in the passing of his wife, Elsie
on Sept. 8th in Winnipeg, MB. Elsie was the
organist and choir director at B-FBC from 1984
until 1990 and Tony sang in the bass section of
the choir during those years. A private family
service was held for Elsie in Steinbach mid Sept.
Please hold all these families in your thoughts and
prayers in their time of loss.
CONGRATULATIONS
To Dylan George and April Burnell
on their recent engagement.
MOB MEETING
The next meeting of the MOB will be held on
October 16th at 9:00 AM. Everyone is invited to
attend. Speaker, topic and additional details will
be available through the bulletin or the church
website closer to the meeting date.
The September meeting took place on the
September 18th at the church with nine hungry
people in attendance. The speaker was Lloyd
Talbot, the topic was ‘Reconciliation and Anti-
Racism' and a delicious breakfast was indeed
served. Apologies to those unable to attend via
Zoom. Technology is not always our friend .
Bob Griffin
STAYING CONNECTED
During October, if you need to contact the church,
please leave a message on the church phone (204-
783-4413). The answering machine is monitored
every day at regular intervals.

RALLY/HOMECOMING SUNDAY
SEPTEMBER 12, 2021
RALLY SUNDAY – BEHIND THE SCENES
SERVICES ON LINE
COVID-19 restrictions have loosened somewhat
with our provincial response level having been
lowered to ‘CAUTION’ (yellow). On Sept. 2nd,
Public Health Orders were updated and allow
“Faith-based services [to] resume indoors at 50
per cent capacity, up to a maximum of 150
people, masks must be worn at all times and
social distancing maintained, especially when
there may be some adults or children under 12
who are not fully immunized present. The
public health order remains in effect at time of
going to press. At press time, we continue to
hold blended Sunday services via Zoom. It is
nice to welcome back some of our number to the
sanctuary and we hope to see even more of our
members there in the near future. The Sunday
services continue to be recorded and once posted
are accessible through our Facebook group (you
must be logged on to Facebook to access this
page) or the church website for those who missed
the service live or wish to revisit one or more of
them at a later date.
Beginning this month (October) the church
website will become the main communications
hub for the link to the live-streamed Zoom
Service of Worship, either by scrolling down the
Page 7 Document Title
Homepage or going directly to the Events page.
Bulletins are available on the Documents page.
A link for recent services can be found on the
Homepage of the church website or go directly to
the Recorded Services page.
We continue to extend a big thank you to
everyone who is involved in planning, hosting,
reading scripture, or preaching during these
services. Thanks also to those who have been
involved in providing music, recording, and
posting the services. It is a lot of work, however,
much appreciated by all.
ZOOM PROTOCOLS
Thank you for joining us on Zoom.
· Please always ensure you are muted during
the service.
· Please remember that you can turn off your
camera if you need to move around.
· Both of these icons are usually in the bottom
left corner of your screen.
· And if you are going to be late signing on, it is
a good idea to make sure your microphone is
muted upon entry.

TRACING CONTACTS AND KEEPING
PEOPLE SAFE DURING PANDEMIC
TIMES
Sunday Services
Just a reminder that although provincial health
restrictions have moved to Code Yellow, we
continue to do our due diligence to be able to
contact people who come to the church and might
become exposed to this virus. Due to current
restrictions and a pending fourth wave, Sunday
services continue in Zoom format and the
sanctuary is restricted as per provincial health
guidelines. Please continue to monitor provincial
guidelines for changes in restrictions and
protocols. When the sanctuary is open again for
in person attendance, notification will be included
in the weekly email from the church as well as
appear on the church website.
During the Week
If you come to the church on
weekdays (Monday - Friday) or on
Saturday, you will find a poster on
the Walnut Street entrance with a QR code on it.
Please scan this QR code with your cell phone
and a form will pop up for you to fill out your
name and contact information. If you don't have a
cell phone and arrive between the hours of 8:30
AM - 7:00 PM, ring the doorbell and someone
from the Coach program will bring you a paper
sign-in sheet. The Wpg. School Division requires
Page 8 Document Title
the sign-in to protect their students and staff and also everyone who comes into the building. We, as
a church, have the moral obligation to comply.
A paper sign-in sheet will also be available at the church office door for those who don't have a cell
phone and arrive after 7:00 PM or on Saturdays.
This procedure is NOT OPTIONAL. We are required to be able to trace back people who come to
our public building as per Manitoba Public Health requirements.
Let's keep each other safe!

SPECIAL CONNECTIONS
AN UPDATE FROM THE GEORGE AND
KEOPRASAIRK FAMILIES
Kefin and I will try to make it out to church
soon. I am just starting to go out. Like I said
before one day at a time. Some days are better
than another. Still no vision on my right eye. I
am not 90% yet but better than I was in the last 2
years for that I am very thankful and grateful.
Please pass on a BIG THANK YOU from us for
always keeping us in your prayers. We may not
be in the Zoom on Sunday but we do watch it
during the week. My parents are both well. Dad
just now has arthritis in his knee and a hard time
sitting right now. Mom is good. Rhys is about to
finish his course at CDI where he has been
taking a course on cyber security.

THOUGHTS ON SOUND
Have you ever been in a room where there is absolute silence? The kind of silence that is almost
magic, and almost tangible – the feeling of quietude. It is the absence of the sound which surrounds
us every day and invades the moments that we wish to reserve for ourselves, with no intrusion.
However, we cannot exclude the sounds which are part of our hearing, and an integral part of our
lives. It was a resident of The Manor who suggested the theme for this month, and he related sound
to the morning chorus – the time the birds awaken and sound their messages across the beginning
of a new day. Having originated in a maritime environment, my mind drifts to thoughts of the one-
time method of sounding, prior to the days of the Radar pings – checking the depth of water below
the keel of the ship. The depth was measured by attaching a lead weight to the end of a rope, and
tossing it overboard, letting the rope run freely until it touched bottom and became slack – the rope
was marked, hauled in and measured. A rather crude device but essential and effective in that day
and age. Music – the sound of music – orchestras, choirs, soloists, instrumentalists, and the list is
never ending. We hear the gentle sounds of much-loved melodies, the cacophony of sound from the
bands which are a part of the present-day culture, the massive sounds of great arias, the words and
music of Countries so distant from our shores, and our hearing brings this music to life. The
telephone is often a nuisance in our everyday lives, but there are those moments when the sound of
the voice of a loved one, or maybe a long-lost friend, shatters your day with brilliance and joy. Not
so long ago, we were enjoined by retailers to buy the “surround sound”, but we already had that
sound in our lives – why the amplification? Back to those
moments of quietude – this is precious time that we can use
to talk to and listen for God. We will certainly not hear a
thunderous voice, but more likely a soft nudge to think
again, or perhaps to make that call, or offer up that prayer.
God grants us those precious moments of silence – we can
wait, watch and listen.
