This is part of our student leaders’ determination to support good causes while educating Port Hacking students about the needs of people beyond the school. I am really proud of the tradition of student leadership in the school which has been developed by generations of school Captains and Prefects. If we define leadership as making life better for other people, then the tradition of service and support that our SRC embodies is a strong one. I am particularly proud of the way in which each year’s Captains and Prefects prepare the way for the aspiring leaders in the younger years, so the school has a continual source of energy, ideas and idealism from its young leaders. I thank Mr McAfee for his commitment in coordinating and directing such a lively group. At this stage they will be feeling the maximum pressure of year 12: assessment tasks continue, while these major deadlines approach. This is when staying committed to a regular revision program is essential. The students who respond best to these challenges are the ones who take things steadily, and who try to make regular small improvements in their learning. There is still enough time to achieve big improvements with lots of small steps. I also need to remind all parents that you are only to drive into the school grounds if authorised by me. We have too many parents dashing in to drop off their kids when they are late or when the weather is bad. This is a definite risk to students and has caused mayhem outside the auditorium and the front office at various times. Please drop your kids off outside the school and let them walk. Year 7 are settling into high school beautifully. Here is a series of camp photos from earlier in the year where we learnt that sleep isn’t really necessary, that we can conquer mud (and even swim through it – who would have thought?), how to climb awfully high and then dive dreadfully fast, that team work gets the job done faster and better, and that fun is never overrated.

Mud can be fun! However, challenging themselves to do things they wouldn’t

normally do was even better.

Even when we are most scared the sense of joy in achieving and

pushing boundaries is

amazing.

Many of the students made new friends or consolidated older friendships.

LuLuLunnna Parka Parka Park For two years now, Yr 11 Physics students from Port Hacking High School have been attending Luna Park as part of their “Moving About” Preliminary Course. They were encouraged to go on every ride at Luna Park to study speed, gravity, forces, momentum, impulse and inertia. The rides included the Ferris Wheel, Wild Mouse, Rotor, Tumblebug, Hairaiser, Spider, Moon Ranger, Joy Wheel, Tango Train and many more. The students had great fun and found it worthwhile while at the same time, were able to observe the concepts of motion that they study in class. This year, the students’ enthusiasm and behaviour throughout the day was exemplary and this excursion will no doubt be a yearly outing for Yr 11 Physics. Mrs A Stamoulos Science Department

Bola Creek Royal National Park Bola Creek Royal National Park Bola Creek Royal National Park

On May 4th as part of the Preliminary Biology and Senior Science courses, 55 students travelled to Bola Creek in the Royal National Park to conduct a first-hand local ecosystem study. Students observed and measured the abiotic parameters to which the main plant and animal species are adapted and studied some of the trophic, competitive and symbiotic interactions between organisms in the ecosystem. This field work contributed to an assessment task in which students were required to then analyse and report on the first hand data they collected. Students showed teamwork and resilience after the heavy rainfall which provided the perfect conditions for Evan Zois to find the biggest leech the guides have ever seen. A dip netting expedition also resulted in a range of organisms being caught with the catch of the day being a green tree frog. Ms M Curtis Science Department

Port Hacking is Off and Racing!!Port Hacking is Off and Racing!!Port Hacking is Off and Racing!! Port Hacking High School is proud to announce that we have entered a team in the global F1 In Schools Competition. Team LYTROS is the brainchild of five hardworking students, Zac Brogan, Jacob Hart, Jack Hills, Lewis Hodgson and Reese Mortlock. Together, team Lytros endeavours to design and produce a CO2 powered Formula One replica that will be entered into a series of races against other competing schools. The gas canister powered cars are capable of exceeding an eye watering 80km/h. But it is not just about fast cars. F1 in Schools™ is a holistic action learning program which focuses on developing long term employability skills. Students learn leadership, team building, project management, business planning, public speaking, marketing, collaboration, writing and presentation skills. The F1 in Schools Technology Challenge is the world’s largest secondary school technology program. It involves over nine million students from 17,000 schools in 31 nations. REA Foundation has been involved in the development of the program since its inception and manages the program in Australia and New Zealand. Each year the program engages more than 40,000 high school students in Australia and delivers industry-standard technology into schools which is made available to a further 300,000 students outside the program. We thank the school for supporting the team. Mr Adam Truebody F1 In Schools Competition Coordinator

Yr 8 UpdateYr 8 UpdateYr 8 Update So far this year, Yr 8 have studied the conventions of both Fairy Tales and Graphic Novels, developing their understanding of how meaning is constructed through a variety of different forms. Each form has its own unique set of techniques that enhance meaning within the story. In Term One, Students delivered engaging and well-developed speeches on how the Fairy Tale ‘Fire Fly Princess’ both conformed and deviated from the conventions of its form. Term Two, students studied how the Graphic Novel ‘Artemis Fowl’ utilised various visual techniques to create meaning. To show their understanding of graphic novel conventions, students created Posters utilising these techniques themselves. Teachers were thrilled by the effort and creativity of all Yr 8 students.

Advanced English ExcursionAdvanced English ExcursionAdvanced English Excursion On Tuesday 26th June a group of English Advanced students attended a workshop symposium on The Tempest at the Seymour Centre to further their understanding of ‘Discovery’ in the Area of Study. The students faced a few challenges actually getting to the venue (an hour train delay at Oatley) but we eventually arrived (a little late) and they showed courtesy and respectfulness to the other students already in the venue as they entered. The way the students behaved was a credit to Port Hacking High School. All students’ behaviour was exemplary throughout the day and the workshop provided a deeper insight into important aspects of ‘Discovery’ for the HSC exam. The notes are available on the school’s Moodle site for revision and access by students who could not attend. Mr Doyle and Ms Burns would like to thank the students for the manner in which they conducted themselves. Mr Doyle and Ms Burns

Extension English Excursion Extension English Excursion Extension English Excursion On Sunday the 31st of May, the Yr 12 Extension 1 English students enjoyed a study day at Newington College. Students from across the state came together to closely examine how they might continue to develop their skills in the all important lead up to their Trial HSC. Former students gave advice on how to tackle the various issues that can arise and how to successfully deal with them. Students then divided into their various electives and listened to a detailed lecture on their particular course. This year our students are studying Science Fiction and they listened to ideas on how to tackle their particular texts. The afternoon session focused on developing students own creative responses as this is a major component of the Extension 1 course. Overall, this was a rare opportunity for students to focus on the unique nature of their course and one which will serve them well in the weeks ahead. Mr Doyle

World of Maths IncursionWorld of Maths IncursionWorld of Maths Incursion World of Maths is an event in which Yr 8 students participate in problem solving activities. For three hours in Week eight, students engaged in brain twisters and mental challenges with a mathematical concept at the centre of each activity. These activities were presented by a visiting company and were set up in the auditorium. The hands-on activities were designed to enable students to experiment and explain mathematical and physical properties relating to gravity, path finding, electricity, 3-dimensional space and puzzles, cogs, probability and even animal conversation. The students thoroughly enjoyed the activities and benefited greatly from the experience. Feedback from students will ensure that this event will run in 2016. Yr 7 students will have the opportunity to participate in this event next year. As a special note, the presenter said that our Year 8 students were very respectful and extremely well behaved. Well done Yr 8.

Band “Blow In”Band “Blow In”Band “Blow In”

On Friday the 8th May through to Saturday 9th May, 29 of our Band students enjoyed our annual Band “Blow in”. Our students commit to playing in shifts throughout the evening and into the early hours of the morning. Once again the evening was highly successful and the students raised $618.50 to support the band program. The students enjoyed learning new repertoire and having the opportunity to enjoy games and other activities throughout the evening. I would like to thank Mr Kevin Skues for his organisation of this event, our dedicated grounds man, Mr David Ward and Ms Janelle Vasey for supporting this event year after year. Thank you also to our Music teacher Mr Edwin Moore for making a guest appearance through the evening. A great evening was enjoyed by all and some tired faces were sent home on Saturday morning!

‘Say No To Bullying Poster Competition’Say No To Bullying Poster Competition’Say No To Bullying Poster Competition’ As part of our school’s program on raising awareness of the serious impact of bullying, our visual arts students were invited to create posters. The theme of the poster brief was ‘Say No To Bullying’. Students from Yrs 7 to 10 responded with outstanding, highly imaginative poster designs. The choice of media and technique was diverse and students communicated very thoughtful, powerful messages on the impact of bullying in the school and wider community. After displaying the posters extensively around the school corridors and in the library, the competition was judged. The following students achieved outstanding results based on both technique and concepts communicated and were presented with certificates and prizes on assembly. Yr 7 - Charlee Grove, Ashley Ford, Mitchell Goyen, Kseniya Yanchuck Yr 8 - Jessica Vandermaal, Daniel He Yr 9 - Katiya Kraljevski Yr 10 - Lauren Lee

ELEVATEELEVATEELEVATE    What is Elevate Education? www.elevateeducation.com Founded in 2001 with offices now in Sydney, New York, and London, Elevate works with over 800 schools and 175,000 students each year, including almost every high performing school in NSW. The company has conducted ground breaking research into the habits of the State’s top students to identify exactly what these students do to ace the HSC.

The seminars are presented by past students who have recently faced and aced the HSC themselves. This ensures that the sessions have genuine impact. Elevate was recently awarded the prestigious title of NSW Business of the Year at the 2014 Telstra Business Awards. The company has received outstanding feedback from students and teachers alike with comments such as: What will be covered in the workshops? The Study Sensei workshop addresses the question: “What is study?” This seminar breaks down the study techniques of the top students, providing students with a roadmap for what work they need to be doing across the year and how to do it. Skills covered include: Working consistently: how to get notes done during term, instead of just before exams; Note-taking strategies: how to extract ideas from readings into an organized set of notes that will facilitate effective learning; Revision techniques: to reduce dependence on rote learning; Practice papers: and the art of deliberate practice; Independent learning: how to distinguish yourself from thousands of other students who are all taught the same material. Time Management Workshop This seminar addresses the second most common question: “Once I know what to do, how do I find the time to do it?” Students have busy lives and for most the challenge is simply finding time to get the work done. Study routine: how to develop a study routine that allows for socialising, sport and extra-curricular activities but still ensures productivity. Working smart: how to identify the work that is going to get students the most marks across their final years and how to ensure that it gets done. Study groups: students are shown how to leverage their time across the year by using study groups. This is a particularly powerful academic technique for those students who are time-poor. Procrastination: students are introduced to the most common reasons underlying procrastination and how to manage them, if not eliminate them altogether.

Yr 12 HSC trial exams are not far away. The Library is open from 8:15am every morning and until 5pm on Mondays and Wednesdays for students to study. The Library has a wide range of Excel study guides, BOSTES HSC workbooks plus many other support resources. All can be used in the Library, borrowed overnight, over the weekend or during the school holidays. There are many different workshops and lectures available for HSC students in the school holidays. HSC Preparation courses are available at Sydney University and Youthworks have HSC Study Conferences while Notre Dame has HSC Study Week.

Wide Reading in Roll CallWide Reading in Roll CallWide Reading in Roll Call Yrs 7 to 10 have a Wide Reading Task for English that goes throughout the year. During the year, Yrs 7 and 8 have to read four books and Yrs 9 and 10 have to read six books. This is worth 20% of the Half Yearly mark and 20% of the Yearly mark. Roll call is a great opportunity to foster this reading. In the Library we get in books by request, by review and to support the curriculum. The genre this year is social realism.
