Another year has begun for the DYC. The January meeting was held the 13th at the Knight’s of Columbus with the new Commodore Ken Kuwik presiding. Members will be receiving their 2009 bills soon. What’s Happening, a lot since the last Nautical News Sue VanPoortvliet is back in her Florida home-port, but this past fall she cruised down the Danube River and later spent Thanksgiving in California with her family. Her Christmas Card showed a rare event, the whole family together for a big birthday celebration. A busy lady!! Craig and Roe, traveled to Switzerland last fall. When asked about the best part of the trip, Roe quickly said “the chocolate”. I had some everyday!! Several members have lost family: Sincere condolences to Don Eno on the loss of his brother; to Al Williams on the loss of his father; to Bill Wojcinski on the loss of his mother and to Diana Hamann on the loss of her mother, Nina Woleben. One unique thing about Nina was the fact that she was a foster parent to 74 children and later a grandmother to many, many foster Grandchildren. What a legacy…. It was wedding bells for Kathryn Wheeler and Patrick McCarthy. Kathryn is the daughter of George and Susan Wheeler. They were married on Sept. 27th. Kathryn and her husband are both employed by General Dynamics as industrial engineers. Congratulations! The Kowalewski’s have both been recuperating. Dave, from arthroscopic knee surgery and Carol from kidney stones. I bet that was a happy household. They are proud of their Granddaughter, Cailin, who was one of the Rotary Students for the month of December. Pat Bailey and Tom and Ronnie Lafferty spent over a week in D’Ilberville, just north of Biloxi, MS as part of the Mission Team where work is still going on rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. Will’s spent Thanksgiving in Tortola where they dined on BVI Turkey and then later moved Willem from Coquina Harbor, SC to Jacksonville, FL in a position to go to the Bahama’s. Marv Bjurlin and Tina Rausa served as crew. I hope all got a chance to see Marv’s BLOG. Great photos of all of the sights along the ICW etc. Flack’s took a quick trip to Chapel Hill, NC and then to Myrtle Beach where they froze. It was a rare cold spell. Several DYC members attended the special presentation of “The Belle of Amherst”, the story of Emily Dickenson portrayed by Tina Rausa. It was great. While there they viewed the artwork by Ronnie Lafferty. The last NN mentioned the Empty Bowls Project. Members Deering, and Steffan participated in serving the soups, made by the Bailey’s, and assisting in the sale of the multitude of bowls made by the local Pottery Group headed by Marv Bjurlin. All $8,000+ went to the local Friendly Kitchen. A great service project. We saw a lot of DYC members attend. The Tailgate Party hosted by Kuwiks’ and Christys’ saw a lot of members gather to watch a disappointing game, but still have a great time. The Christmas gift exchange was interesting and at times “heated”. Held at Walleye Willies, it was a fun time and a great time to wish all Happy Holidays. It was good seeing Roger Pyle at the gathering. He has some new jokes!! The I 95 corriador saw a lot of members heading South or North for the Holidays. Baileys’ and Phelps’ brought in 2009 at the Klaybors’ as did the Wills on their way back to get Willem in Jacksonville. Joe Troidle got to see Allie at MCAS (Marine Corps Air Station) at Cherry Point NC. Kutners’ celebrated in NC by Lake Norman. Mostollers were in Africa, (see below) It sounds like quite an adventure. Thanks for sharing. Marv Bjurlin and Tina and Carl Bjurlin and Donna spent time in Quito, Ecuador and then on to The Galapagos Islands. Was that really Jason Schmidt’s boat being pulled at Chadwick on Dec. 11th? The Bailey’s are Grandparents again….this time to twins Seth Andrew and Lucas Paul born to Andrew and Tobi Davidson of Huntley, IL. Former members Jim and Val Betts are proud Grandparents too. Their daughter gave birth to Gabrielle Elizabeth, born 12/26/08 at 6 lbs., 7 oz., a little "peanut!" according to Val.

George & Teresa Heckman’s “Checkmate”, their 34’ Searay, has made it safely down to Florida at its new residence right outside the door of their home in Cape Coral. Currently they are enjoying the warm weather and cruising along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. They still plan to keep their cottage in Van Buren Point and their home in Pennsylvania.

In the News -Cathy Berner and Sue Marsh members of the Shorewood Women’s Golf Association at a final celebration for the year. -Marah Dahn fighting for a rebound with a Randolph Player during the Pine Valley-Fredonia Tip-Off Tournament. -Cynnie Gaasch, director of development for Young Audiences of Western New York, has been selected to be a member of the 17th annual Business First “40 Under Forty” class of 2008. She was recognized for her professional success and community involvement. Cynnie is an artist, a writer and a community activist. She is the daughter of Jack Gaasch and is on the waiting list. It seems that winter got an early start this year. The second week of November, the temps dropped and so did the snow. Storm after storm accompanied by high winds seem to be the norm this winter. In between the temperature rises, it rains and then flooding. Quite a year.

"T"-Cup recipients for this year are Tom and Ronnie Lafferty, in recognition of all the work they do for the club and members. The award was announced by last year's recipients, Bill and Colleen Wright.

Membership highlights for the year included Henry Danielson attaining Life Membership, having 25 years

A South African Adventure by Adam Mostoller

On November 13, 2008 we were off to Johannesburg, South Africa for a 17-day tour of Southern Africa. We toured the cities of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Soweto and Durban; stayed in two National Parks, Chobe National Park in Botswana, and Kruger National Park in South Africa. We went on numerous safaris seeing elephants, giraffes, zebra, Cape buffalo, impala, wart hogs, kudus, a lion, rhinos, hippos, and lots of birds. We have lasting, even haunting memories of Zimbabwe where we stayed at Victoria Falls in a beautiful Historical Hotel. It was unique with Baboons running across the rooftops, and elephants roaming nearby. There are guards to insure the safety of the guests from the animals. The Falls are one of the natural Seven Wonders of the World. Outside of the compound is extreme poverty. We visited a local primary school. The students wear uniforms and appear happy. They have no books, libraries, cafeterias, electricity, or individual desks. The teacher writes the lessons on the blackboard. Yet the country has a literacy rate of 92 percent. Meaning all 15 years olds can read and write in English and Zimbabwean. The country has very limited food sources. There were no open grocery stores. We flew to the bottom of the peninsula to Cape Town, a modern thriving city. Highlights were: a visit to The Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point, the southern most parts of Africa. A ferry ride to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 years, a winery tour, lunch at the unique harbor front cafes, and a funicular ride of 3200 feet up Table Mountain. The mountain is flat on top resembling a table. Statistics of the trip: Flights of over 25000 miles, 11 air flights, 13 immigration stops, various motor coach and small bus rides and 5 open safari vehicle rides.

A heartfelt thank you to the many members for your cards, calls, flowers and expression of sympathy on the passing of my mother, Marjorie Higbee. Sincerely, Sylvia Bailey
