Anne Boleyn - A Forgotten QueenThe world history is replete with

brave and magnificent womenwho ruled either directly or by

proxy because of their gifted be-witching beauty, bravery and fearless-ness, attractive and affectionate man-nerism and other such qualities. Thismonarch system now almost obsolete, was well prevalent till eighteenth cen-tury, had queens also from the clan ofconcubines, slaves or daughters of thecourt officials but unfortunately theirend was very tragic and their rule mayor may not be remembered but theirdownfall and death still sendsshiversdown the spine. Anne Boleyn is onesuch icon, the second wife of the kingHenry VIII of England in the six-teenth century.

She was born in 1501, to ThomasBoleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire andElizabeth Boleyn. She was educatedin Netherlands and France and re-mained as a maid of honour to QueenClaude of France. She returned to

England in 1522 planning to marryher Irish cousin but her attempt wasfoiled by her father. She joined asmaid of honour to Henry VIII's wifeCatherine. In 1523, she secretly be-trothedto Henry Percy but her mar-riage was again broken due to kingHenry's intervention as he himself fellin love with her, passionately attract-ed to her beautiful black eyes andhairs. In the first part of 1526, KingHenry VIII started wooing Anne butshe resisted his attempt to seduce herand refused to be her mistress like herown sister Mary. Being frustrated anddisgusted having no son from his firstwife and all the conceptions endingwith miscarriages, hepreferred sepa-ration from his wife and desperatelywanted to marry Anne. Ultimately, hewas successful in winning over Anneand they got married in 1533 andhadtheir first baby child, the futurequeen of England, Elizabeth I. But af-ter the new arrival, things started

changing dramatically taking veryugly turn, setting in the disaster forAnne. As she had three consecutivemiscarriages and confirmed being noconception in futuremade the king re-pulsive and depressed.

King spurned her and turned hisaffection and even physical belong-ings to Jane Seymour, maid of honourto Anne Boleyn. Anne Boleyn's grow-ing influence and arrogant behaviourmade her unpopular amongst thecourtiers' and are jealous of her ele-vation. Rumours agog about Anne's-infidelity having sexual relations withvarious men, even incest with herown brother and conspiracy againstthe king. She was tried by court ofpeers. Anne denied all the allega-tionsvehemently but Privy Councilpronounced her guilty of all thecharges and sentenced her to death. She was beheaded on May 19, 1536and golden period of her life was cutshort at the age of merely36. Her

short and eventful life and even trag-ic death has many significant issues tobe evaluated and had far reachingconsequences on the religious and po-litical life of England. First of all mar-riage to Anne led King Henry to breakwith the Roman Catholic Church andbrought about the English Reforma-tion. She gave twenty pounds to theexecutor, hired from France for exe-cution. This is very strange, is likeasking a person who is to be hangedto bring knot from his house for hisown hanging, though a small amountis being charged for cremation andburial in whole of the world. Lastlypeople are often heard saying that oldtimes were very good and there is nodoubt in it because values of love, re-spect and mutual dignity on the socialfront and economic viability were inabundance in those times butjoys andsorrows, even life of one was depend-ent upon the whims and fancies ofkings/rulers. Moreover how one per-

son can afford to make another personhappy all the times when one hasone's own thinking power differenti-ating him from animals and also hisown compulsions. This is what hap-pened with Anne who had fallen preyto her husband's wild ambition ofhaving son as his heir for which sheremained unlucky and had to face thewrath of the king. Historians and crit-ics have been of the unanimous opin-ion, had Anne given son to the king, all the charges for which she was be-headed would have been overlookedand her precious life would have beensaved.

In the end Anne was an excep-tionally brave and fearless lady hav-ing high degree of fortitude (Mental& emotional strength in facing diffi-cult times with courage.) and thesame has been beautifullynarrated bySir William Kingston, her warder dur-ing custody - "I have seen many menand also women, executed and they

have been in great sorrow and to myknowledge, this lady hath much joyand pleasure in death". She shouldalso be remembered being proudmother of Queen Elizabeth I, mostrevered Queen of England. But theking Henry should also be con-demned not only for killing a youngbudding Queen by hatching a wilfulconspiracy but also getting marriedsix times and having numerous otherillicit relations and more shamefullymarriage with, Jane Seymour solem-nized within 11 days from the day ofkilling of Anne. This is the height ofimmorality and mockery of humanity.I humbly extend my all appreciationsand sympathies to this marvellouslady whose end still clouds theMonarchy in England.

Inner beastThe independence of the judiciary is non-nego-

tiable. The president of India, Ram NathKovind, emphasized this in his speech on Con-

stitution Day. While this is a universally accepteddoctrine — at least declared as such by all politicians— the route to independence has not been fullyagreed upon. That the president himself should warnjudges about making indiscreet comments in courtwhile talking about the judiciary’s independence wasa small irony in this context. The president suggestedthat such comments damaged the perception of im-partiality of judges by showing their engagementwith events of the time. Of far greater weight, how-ever, was the president’s suggestion that there couldbe another system for the appointment and transfer ofjudges than the present collegium system. He envi-sioned an all India judicial service that would inductfresh legal talent through an examination by a Cen-tral body, such as the Union Public Service Commis-sion. The new system would nurture these talents, providing them with the incentive of merit-based el-evation to higher courts. At the very least, that wouldhelp fill vacancies and reduce pendency.

The idea has been raised from time to time sincethe Law Commission’s recommendation in 1958.What is relevant is that the government raised thesubject early in November in spite of the fact thatthere is strong opposition to the idea from some statesand high courts. There are not only questions aboutits constitutionality, but also about a breach of feder-al principles, because the Constitution empowers thestates and high courts to appoint lower court judges.Beneath the objections lies the fear of the executive’spresence in the selection of judges in a centralizedsystem. The Centre’s reiteration of the subject shouldperhaps be juxtaposed with its proposed amendmentto the Constitution to bring about the National Judi-cial Appointments Commission. The Supreme Courtstruck it down in 2015 as unconstitutional. It wouldreplace the collegium system with a panel includingthe law minister and two persons of the government’schoice apart from the chief justice of India and twoseniormost Supreme Court judges. Certainly, the col-legium system lacks transparency. But reform mustbe based on reason and consensus. Coercion by ordistrust of either side would be the worst way to goabout it.

GitanjaliThou hast made me endless, suchis thy pleasure. This frail vesselthou emptiest againand again, andfillest it ever withfresh life. This little flute of areed thou hast car-ried over hills anddales, and hast breathed throughit melodies eternally new.At the immortal touch of thyhands my little heart loses its lim-its in joy and gives birth to utter-ance ineffable.Thy infinite gifts come to meonly on these very small hands ofmine.

Arctic Ocean startedgetting warmer

An international group of researchersreconstructed the recent history ofocean warming at the gateway to the

Arctic Ocean in a region called the FramStrait, between Greenland and Svalbard.

The findings of the study were pub-lished in the journal 'Science Advances'.

A recent study has suggested that theArctic Ocean has been getting warmersince the beginning of the 20th century -decades earlier than the records have previ-ously suggested.

Using the chemical signatures found inmarine microorganisms, the researchersfound that the Arctic Ocean began warmingrapidly at the beginning of the last centuryas warmer and saltier waters flowed infrom the Atlantic - a phenomenon calledAtlantification - and that this change likelypreceded the warming documented bymodern instrumental measurements.

Since 1900, the ocean temperature hasrisen by approximately 2 degrees Celsius, while sea ice has retreated and salinity hasincreased.

The results provide the first historicalperspective on the Atlantification of theArctic Ocean and reveal a connection withthe North Atlantic that is much strongerthan previously thought. The connection iscapable of shaping Arctic climate variabil-ity, which could have important implica-tions for sea-ice retreat and global sea-lev-el rise as the polar ice sheets continue tomelt.

All of the world's oceans are warmingdue to climate change, but the ArcticOcean, the smallest and shallowest of theworld's oceans, is warming fastest of all.

"The rate of warming in the Arctic ismore than double the global average, due tofeedback mechanisms. Based on satellitemeasurements, we know that the ArcticOcean has been steadily warming, in par-ticular over the past 20 years, but we want-ed to place the recent warming into a longercontext," said co-lead author Dr Francesco

Muschitiello from Cambridge's Depart-ment of Geography. Atlantification is oneof the causes of warming in the Arctic, however instrumental records capable ofmonitoring this process, such as satellites, only go back about 40 years. As the ArcticOcean gets warmer, it causes the ice in thepolar region to melt, which in turn affectsglobal sea levels. As the ice melts, it ex-poses more of the ocean's surface to thesun, releasing heat and raising air tempera-tures. As the Arctic continues to warm, itwill melt the permafrost, which stores hugeamounts of methane, a far more damaginggreenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

The researchers used geochemical andecological data from ocean sediments to re-construct the change in water column prop-

erties over the past 800 years. They pre-cisely dated sediments using a combinationof methods and looked for diagnostic signsof Atlantification, like change in tempera-ture and salinity.

"When we looked at the whole 800-year timescale, our temperature and salini-ty records look pretty constant. But all of asudden at the start of the 20th century, youget this marked change in temperature andsalinity - it really sticks out," said co-leadauthor Dr Tesi Tommaso from the Instituteof Polar Sciences of the National ResearchCouncil in Bologna. "The reason for thisrapid Atlantification of at the gate of theArctic Ocean is intriguing," said Muschi-tiello. "We compared our results with theocean circulation at lower latitudes and

found there is a strong correlation with theslowdown of dense water formation in theLabrador Sea. In a future warming sce-nario, the deep circulation in this subpolarregion is expected to further decrease be-cause of the thawing of the Greenland icesheet. Our results imply that we might ex-pect further Arctic Atlantification in the fu-ture because of climate change," addedMuschitiello. The researchers say that theirresults also expose a possible flaw in cli-mate models because they do not reproducethis early Atlantification at the beginning ofthe last century. "Climate simulations gen-erally do not reproduce this kind of warm-ing in the Arctic Ocean, meaning there's anincomplete understanding of the mecha-nisms driving Atlantification.

Study finds cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol linked to plastics

Anew study hasfound that phthalate-- a chemical used

to make plastics moredurable -- has led to in-creased plasma cholesterollevels.

The findings of thestudy were published inthe journal 'EnvironmentalHealth Perspectives'.

"We found dicyclo-hexyl phthalate, or DCHP,strongly binds to a receptorcalled pregnane X recep-tor, or PXR," saidChangcheng Zhou, who isa professor in the UCRSchool of Medicine.

"DCHP 'turns on' PXRin the gut, inducing the ex-pression of key proteins re-quired for cholesterol ab-sorption and transport. Ourexperiments show thatDCHP elicits high choles-terol by targeting intestinalPXR signalling," addedZhou. DCHP, a widely

used phthalate plasticizer, has recently been proposedby the Environmental Pro-tection Agency as a high-priority substance for riskevaluation. Not much isknown yet about DCHP'sadverse effects on humans.

"To our knowledge, our study is the first toshow the effects of DCHPexposure on high choles-terol and cardiovasculardisease risk in mouse mod-els. Our results provide in-sights and new under-

standings of the impact ofplastic-associated chemi-cals on high cholesterol --or dyslipidemia -- and car-diovascular disease risk,"Zhou said.

Zhou's team alsofound that mice exposed toDCHP had in their intes-tines higher circulating"ceramides" -- a class ofwaxy lipid molecules asso-ciated with increased car-diovascular disease risk inhumans -- in a way thatwas PXR-dependent.

China's predatory actions inSouth East Asia backfire

China's intimidating attitude, particular-ly over the South China Sea issue, isbackfiring as countries in the region

have taken exception to Beijing's stance. Inthe last few years, Beijing has aggressivelypushed its nine-dash line claims in the Sprat-ly and Paracel islands in the South China Sea,according to the International Forum forRights and Security (IFFRAS). The otherclaimants to the South China Sea islands areTaiwan, Vietnam, Brunei, Indonesia, andMalaysia. Further, China has demonstratedan aggressive approach in pressing its terri-torial claims against its neighbours. Not justthe Philippines, other Southeast Asian coun-

tries involved in the South China Sea disputetoo have objected to Chinese hostilities. Ac-cording to the U.S. Department of Defense,China has created 3,200 acres of new land inthe Spratly Islands since 2013.

Earlier, the Philippines had petitionedagainst China in the Permanent Court of Ar-bitration at The Hague. Further, the tribunalin 2016 decreed that China had no right toclaim ownership of the sea and also observedthat China had violated international law inconstructing the islands. The South ChinaSea is not the only instance of the way Bei-jing treats Southeast Asian countries withcontempt.

companies, surveyed to understand the consumer sentiment and interest towards the availability of alcohol beverages through the e-commerce channel in the state of Haryana. The extensive survey received around 2,000 responses from consumers across five states in the country. Haryana with Chandigarh demonstrate a major trend towards e-commerce channels, with 59% of respondents showcasing a strong inclination for purchasing alcohol beverages online. The survey findings brought to life the fact that consumers in Haryana have the least positive experience while buying alcohol from a physical store. Responses to the survey highlighted safety issues, cramped/ crowded stores, general inconvenience in terms of time, effort and lack of variety as top factors contributing to the underwhelming experience of buying alcoholic beverages from traditional outlets. Of the five states, only 27% of respondents from Haryana agree that their experience of buying alcohol from a local store was 'very positive'. Therefore, it is unsurprising to see that 44% of consumers in Haryana & Chandigarh already prefer calling/texting/WhatsApping the alcohol store for safe home delivery. From a state-to-state comparison perspective, 59% of consumers in Haryana and Chandigarh are keen to order alcoholic beverages through online channels. The figure is only second to Maharashtra, where 62% of respondents have positive feedback for e-commerce channels.

Ind vs NZ, 2nd Test: With Kohliback, hosts look to seal series winAGENCYMUMBAI, DEC 2

The first Test between India andNew Zealand might have ended inan enthralling draw but now thetime is over to ponder over whatmight have been as the secondTest is not that far away.

The second Test between In-dia and New Zealand will beginon Friday at the Wankhede Stadi-um, Mumbai. The game will seethe return of India skipper ViratKohli, however, his comebackhas left some selection dilemmafor the hosts.

With Shreyas Iyer becomingthe first Indian debutant to score acentury and half-century in hisdebut Test, he cannot be droppedand with the poor form of AjinkyaRahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, the choice has been made all themore difficult on who should goout of the XI to make way forKohli.

Rahane and Pujara failed toimpress with the bat in the firstTest, and the road ahead looks dif-ficult for the once-reliable Testbatters. However, the manage-ment is expected to stick withthese two for atleast the MumbaiTest. Wicketkeeper Wriddhiman

Saha suffered a stiff neck in thefirst Test, so he might make wayfor Srikar Bharat who can also batas an opener.

So in all probability, Kohliwill come in place of MayankAgarwal into the lineup. Comingto the bowling scheme of things,Ishant Sharma looked completely

out of sorts in the first Test, soMohammed Siraj can be broughtin to add further firepower to thebowling attack which alreadycomprises Umesh Yadav,Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Pateland Ravindra Jadeja. Talkingabout New Zealand, openers WillYoung and Tom Latham were im-

pressive with the bat, but the visi-tors will look to get more out ofthe middle-order, especially skip-per Kane Williamson. KyleJamieson and Tim Southee pro-duced one of the best bowlingperformances by visiting pacerson an Asian pitch.

AGENCYMUMBAI, DEC 2

New Zealand pacer Tim Southee hasbacked the Kiwis middle order tocome good in the second Test againstIndia despite a poor show in theopening game.

Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, and Tom Blundell all failed to leavea mark before Rachin Ravindra'sgutsy innings helped New Zealandearn a draw in the first Test on Mon-day.

"No, I don't think so (middle-or-der concern). There were periods forboth sides where one was able totake wickets at a time, so it's not easyto start in these conditions," saidSouthee while replying to an ANIquery during a virtual press confer-ence.

"Ross Taylor is experienced andknows this part of the world as welland then you have a couple of guys

who have played here."So I don't think the form of

middle order is a concern for us.

They are all quality players and I'msure they can perform at this level,"he added.

The second Test between Indiaand New Zealand will begin on Fri-day at the Wankhede Stadium, Mum-bai. Talking about the inclementweather in Mumbai, Southee said: "Iguess the wickets have been underthe covers, hopefully, Gary and Kanecan have a look at this wicket this af-ternoon. We were not expecting rainbut this is something we need toadapt to it."

New Zealand: Kane Williamson(capt), Tom Blundell, KyleJamieson, Tom Latham, DarylMitchell, Henry Nicholls, Ajaz Patel,Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra,Mitchell Santner, Will Somerville,Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, NeilWagner, Will Young.

Former India batter VVS Laxman feelsit will be difficult for the head coachRahul Dravid and skipper Virat Kohli topick the playing XI for the second Testagainst New Zealand.

The second Test between India andNew Zealand will begin on Friday at theWankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The gamewill see the return of Kohli in the squad, but his comeback has left some selectiondilemma for the hosts.

"Shreyas Iyer batted in both the in-nings and to get a hundred in his firstTest series and then to follow it up witha fantastic half century. Both these in-

nings, mind you, have come when theteam was under pressure, so it was a fan-tastic performance from Shreyas Iyer,"said Laxman on Star Sports show Fol-low The Blues. "It will be difficult, but Ibelieve that Mayank Agarwal in both theinnings gave an underwhelming per-

formance and was uncomfortable at thecrease. Cheteshwar Pujara has the abili-ty to open, he has opened the inningspreviously.

"The number 3 position can be filledby Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli cancome at number 4 and Shreyas can comein at number 5 because how can you ig-nore his performance," he added.

Iyer stole the show on his Test debutlast week and Laxman feels it will bedifficult to ignore the performance of thebatter ahead of the second Test.

"So, I think it's a tough call thatRahul Dravid and Virat Kohli have totake. I hope that they take the right deci-sion and don't ignore the performance ofShreyas Iyer," said Laxman.
