The Season of Lent began last Wednesday. Please remember that the Fridays of Lent are
days of Abstinence (That means that those who are 14 years of age or older must abstain
from meat on Fridays. On Good Friday, we are required to fast and abstain from meat.
(Fasting requires those who are 19 through 59 to eat only one full
meal that day. The two other meals must not equal a full meal, and
no snacks.)
This week we begin our Stations of the Cross, Mass and Soup
Suppers on Wednesdays, March 4, 11, and 18 at 6:30 P.M. at St.
Mary Church, Lone Tree; on all Lenten Thursdays beginning March 5
at 6:00 P.M. at St. Joseph Church, Hills; and on Thursdays, March
26 and April 2 at 6:30 P.M. at The Church of St. Mary, Nichols.
Our Lenten Communal Penance Service is Wednesday, April 1, 6:30 P.M. at St. Mary
Church, Lone Tree.
There are forty days of Lent. The St. Joseph Parish Council suggested that we bring a
non perishable item of food for every day of Lent to share with our local Food
Pantries. There are baskets at the entrance of our churches for this cluster project.
The Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowls are at the back of the
church. Inside the Rice Bowls is your Rice Bowl calendar. Check it
out. Use the Rice Bowl, the calendar and the website CRSRICE-
BOWL.ORG to guide your family’s Lenten Journey. The Rice Bowl at
the altar is for your Lenten Rice Bowl sacrifices to help Catholic Relief Services to help people
around the world. The Rice Bowl calendar suggests that you give 25 cents for each of your
neighbors on this Monday and to give 25 cents for each member of your family on this Tues-
day . Check out the recipe in your CRS Rice Bowl calendar for Pilau (spiced rice) from Kenya.
Dynamic Catholic's BEST LENT EVER is here once again with daily videos coming to you online from Matthew Kelly using some of his reflections from his book, Rediscover the Saints. Sign up now at BestLentEver.com/2020. We have a limited number of The Best Lent Ever Journals at the back of the church that could help your Lenten progress using the on-line videos.
Father Mike
For your daily Lenten meditations for Lent, take a copy of The Word Among Us also at the
back of the church. This year besides the prayers and meditations for each day of Lent, they
also have our Lenten weekday Masses.
This Sunday, we send ten of our RCIA candidates to the Rite of Election at St. Patrick Church,
Iowa City, with Bishop Thomas Zinkula at 3:00 P.M. We continue to pray for these eight
catechumens and two candidates as they prepare to become Catholics at Easter time.
Reminder: Next weekend Daylight Savings Time begins. Set clocks ahead 1 hour at 2:00 am Sunday, March 8, 2020.
