We can go to the market and buy tomatoes, of course, but there is no comparison to the taste of a tomato freshly picked from the vine. Some food cooperatives offer the option of picking your tomatoes fresh off the vine. If grown organically, you can pick the tomato and bite into it right away. With a burst of flavor that speaks of the glory of God there is a sweet and warm earthy taste of sun ripened tomato that gives us a soul satisfying sense of peace and connection with all of God’s creation at that moment. (Please allow me this moment of near hyperbole, because I grew up on a farm and love the rewards of tending the earth.) However true all of this may be, it all dims in comparison to actually growing your own tomatoes and enjoying the taste and satisfaction of enjoying the fruits of all your hard work. It takes hard work, loving care, almost daily tending, and a good bit of hope and faith in the soil and weather to grow tomatoes. But, my oh my, the joy and pleasure that comes when you enjoy the harvest! Prayer is a lot like growing tomatoes. You can let someone else do the work of prayer and perhaps even see the results, but there is no satisfaction like doing the work of prayer and seeing the results yourself! John Eldredge in his book, Moving Mountains, reflects on prayer in the following: “Christians have been told over and over that God is almighty. And indeed he is—the God of four hundred billion billion suns. We have been told he is also sovereign. And indeed he is. Perhaps out of respect, we have adopted the notion that if he is going to act, he is going to act quickly. Bam. Zap. (If we are honest, I think we adopted that perspective because it also relieves us of strenuous prayer.) But is this what we see in so many of these biblical accounts? Clearly, God does not just zap Peter out of prison. The church has to pray “strenuously” for him; the event goes on into the night. He does not zap the promised rain either—Elijah had to climb to the top of the mountain, and there he prayed eight rounds of intervening prayer. God did send the angel to Daniel the first day he prayed—but it took three weeks for him to break through.

TOMATOES AND PRAYER

With August comes the expectant hope and promise of a harvest of fresh tomatoes. We can go to the market and buy tomatoes, of course, but there is no comparison to the taste of a tomato freshly picked from the vine. Some food cooperatives offer the option of picking your tomatoes fresh off the vine. If grown organically, you can pick the tomato and bite into it right away. Lectionary Readings for August

August 5: Ephesians 4:1-16; John 6:24-35; Psalm 51:1-12 August 12: Ephesians 4:25-5:2; John 6:35, 41-51; Psalm 34:1-8 August 19: Ephesians 5:15-20; John 6:51-58; Psalm 111 August 26: Ephesians 6:10-20; John 6:56-69; Psalm 84

God didn’t just zap Joseph, Mary, and the child Jesus down into safety in Egypt—an angel had to come to them as well; they had to flee in the night. Are you getting the picture? Prayer is not just asking God to do something and waiting for him to zap it. Intervening prayer often takes time. And it takes repetition, repeatedly intervening and invoking. (Eight rounds for Elijah).” We will resume Wednesday evening Prayer Meeting and Bible Study on September 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. I hope you will consider joining us in doing the work of prayer for our congregation and God’s will and work through us at Calvary Baptist Church. We hope you continue, or perhaps begin to seriously pray individually at home, and collectively with us as a congregation. Then, when prayers are answered, we can together praise God for the sweet fruit of answered prayer.

A Cicada’s Song of Praise

From high and lofty perch I tell The joys of Him who made me well,

Through pleasant warmth of summer days I sing the chorus of His praise,

And distant cicadas join the song, To Him all glorious praise belongs! I climb great heights in leafy tree

To worship Him who fashioned me. The universe exalts His name,

The One from age to age to same. And when my raspy voice you hear,

I join the music of the spheres, The everlasting holy flood

Of all creation praising God.

From Celebrate His Praise, © 2016 by Joyce Keedy

Thanks to all who prayed for me and with me. I could feel you all burdened with my burden. I’ve never felt so much love around me and knew that after the prayer of so many saints only good could come out of it. Glory be to God for answered prayers and His peace through difficult times. Goes on to prove that a lot can change with the power of prayer of

Plan ahead for Our Mission Breakfast on Sunday, November 4 and learn about:OUR STORY

The First Seeds of Teêbo.The seeds for Teêbo were planted in a lesson a father gave his son on Christmas day in 2005.

Instead of getting presents that year, the 16-year-old got an opportunity to serve. His father decided to give a small sum of money to two neighboring families, and the young man, whose name was PSam, was to personally deliver it.

The first family was a widow with seven orphans. Upon receiving the money the widow and her seven children were so overjoyed and touched that they began to pray and bless PSam. The next family responded in the same way. And as these families prayed and thanked PSam, he was surprised to find that the initial bitterness and disappointment of not receiving a gift was being replaced with joy. He witnessed firsthand the impact of generosity, and how even the smallest action can have a large impact. But his generosity didn’t stop there. A burden was placed on his heart for the entire nation of Burkina Faso, and three years later, when PSam moved to the US he began supporting pastors and missionary back home. Then in 2011 through the blessings and grace of God, PSam started Teêbo, a nonprofit organization designed to provide humanitarian aid, education, and the gospel to the people of Burkina Faso.

You will have an opportunity to meet PSam (Founder and Executive Director of Teêbo) our guest speaker on November 4th.
