A Final Fairwell From This Editor

It has been a pleasure working on the FOCC Club Camtorque Magazine for the past year or so, and I hope that you have enjoyed reading it.

Unfortunatley, it is time for me to step aside and allow a new editor to fill my shoes and carry on with creating the Camtorque Magazine for our members. I have other priorities now and must turn my attention towards those instead.

All the best and thanks for reading!

4 THE PRESIDENTS CORNER

I have had to reasses my future and where I hope to be in one year’s time. Any visit to Adelaide involves a cost in fuel and a minimum of two and a half hours dead time. I need to go to Adelaide for various reasons that are mostly necessary and plan to continue doing FOCC CHVRS work when visiting Adelaide.

When the FOCC AGM comes around in March I will be dropping my current involvement in the FOCC Executive Committee. For the rest of the FOCC Club Year I will be the FOCC acting Treasurer until such time as Marino gets back. At some stage when Marino decides on a move to Melbourne or whatever someone will have to step up and become the new FOCC Treasurer. I will be the FOCC Far North Authorised Officer for the FOCC CHVRS and Gill will remain as the Clothing Officer. I will be happy to continue as the CAMS delegate and Public Officer.

At our recent Committee meeting it was worked out somehow that the constitution in the FOCC website was not the constitution that is held by the Office of Consumer and Business Affairs (OCBA) and as a result all the work done on the changes would need to be modified and there will be no constitution changes made at the AGM. I will have to get a copy of the constitution as held by the OCBA and start again. That might sound bad but the changes will be minimal and they will mostly be what you have seen already put in the right place and some re-numbering of clauses. I will continue working with the FOCC Constitution and will process any changes through the OCBA and DPTI and then the application for me to be Street Rod approval accredited in the FOCC.

Someone else will become the keeper of the attendance book and work out the Clubman and Clubwomen of the year. I have a spread sheet that I can pass on to that person which makes the record keeping straight forward.

I will also cut my ties to the Adelaide Hills Motor Restorers Club based in Mount Barker and seek to join a more local National Historic Machinery Club so that I can keep an insurance card that will allow me to display my model stationary steam engines in public display areas.

PRESIDENTS

CORNERArticle Written By Gordon Cowley

I want to spend more time on my motor vehicles rather than farming out the jobs that are needed to keep them on the road. I need to get the Tourer back on the road so that it can be used early in April and that will need a real daytime commitment. The original Tourer engine will be used as there are long term plans for the 100E goodies that I have.

I may not give a particularly all embracing President’s report at the AGM, but I will have something to say. There will not be “Words from Gordon Cowley” in the next Camtorque so this is my swan song here. The mention of Camtorque reminds me that Gill and I will continue to post Camtorque to those members that are not internet savvy. It is an interesting and straight forward job that does not take a lot of time.

I have enjoyed my time at the sharp end of the FOCC and have done various jobs in my time in the FOCC. The club has changed a lot over the 43 or so years that I have been involved with the FOCC. Whilst I may have been one of the “old hands” in the beginning the club members of that time were younger and more involved with dirt motorkhanas and dirt and mud sprints. As those younger people moved out of the FOCC due to young family pressures the membership has changed and we are now an “older” and perhaps wiser group. In general we do not “do it in the dirt” anymore instead we go for a drive and have a pub lunch. There is still a lot of enthusiam in the FOCC for the Ford brand and I hope that we can continue that enthusiam with the overseas based vehicles that will become the Ford staples. There will still be a strong Ford world presence in engineering in Australia as the Australian engineers are well trained and have designed or influenced global Ford vehicles.

So be it.

Gordon Cowley FOCC Club President

5ON A LIGHTER NOTE BY MR GULLIBLE

Hi Everyone!

The year of promise is coming thick and fast with promises being issued without regard to reality. The sheds have gone up as promised but there is another story attached to that.

The site preparation for the new house is going really well. The Engineer had promised that the engineering plans will be submitted for certification soon and you guessed it, there is another story to that.

The excavation is to a depth of 3.2 metres and all I need is the final nod as the actual depth should be 3.4 metres to my reckoning. A very impatient waiting game this is. Mind you, what I am digging most is rock and when I lift one it can leave a metre deep hole. It is a fascinating concept that after digging so far down, I may need to backfill!

When this level is confirmed, I only need to go down another 3 metres. I have already worn out 2 picks and broke two shovel handles but that is how it works. I have also lost some weight and got some blisters on my hands but that I am told is a sign of a hard worker. I don’t know how I end up with the blisters watching Mrs Gullible doing the work.

The Engineers promise was to have the plans to the certifiers first thing in the new year. It was a promise but I did not get it in writing which year he was referring to. In actual fact he has submitted them twice and both times had them rejected for silly little things like typos, missing calculations and missing a few footings. Not much of a problem really.

Council question of the week:

Question: “What colour is the roof”? (They are obsessed with colours)

Reply: “The side I see will be a standard light grey, for the aircraft going over it will be dark grey. If anyone else can see it then they are either guests or intruders.”

Reaction: “We are concerned about the appearance from the road. There is a need to maintain a visual neutral in scenic areas.”

Further Reply: “Are you contemplating building a road somewhere near my house that you have not told me about as no-one can see the new house from the scenic drive.”

Upgrade the progress to. “Morris Minor top speed. And that is low or you use too much oil.

The Shed Outbuilding.

The Promised outbuildings are up so their promise is fulfilled except that the first shed they put up was missing the two roller doors. Makes it really hard to get cars in and out without them! Being rectified soon, they promise. The second shed is also up except for the lack of roller door. At least they built it with an opening for one. It will have a roller door within a week, they promise.

The Galaxie

Running like a Ford should and why not. Still a few little things to sort out but that is how these older cars are I expect. The exhaust leak that I thought was fixed is back again but now that I have a shed I can work on that problem in my spare time.

(Repeat from last issue) So if I can get my car on the road what about the rest of you. I have 1 more run to do in my tenure as Events Manager and I would like to see some of those precious cars of yours on the road. Next run will be to a private park away from wondering public, for a nice lunch after a casual cruise. Can seat plenty so stop being wimps and let’s see your car. Support the Club that supports you.

6 SMALL FORDS ON SHOW 2016

A group of FOCC members took their small Fords to the Small Ford Show held at the National Motor Museum Birdwood on Sunday 28th February. The Ford RS Owners Club of SA, organise and run this annual event which was a joy to be involved with. In other words we will be there again next year.

There were all sorts of small Fords on display with interstate vehicles from Victoria and NSW in attendance. A large number of vehicle categories kept the judges busy and the quality of vehicles made singling out the best of the best very difficult. Two of our club members did us proud. Kevin’s maroon Cortina Mark 1 GT was awarded best Mark 1 at Show, with Barry’s White Cortina Mark 2 awarded best Mark 2. Well done to both with their cars competing against stiff competitors.

Great event, great surroundings and great company all combined to make it a great Sunday.

8 HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT ... CERAMIC COATING

Engine coatings, once only for aerospace & military uses, is now available for both serious engine uses & also engine bay beauty.

Coatings fall into one of five broad categories: antifriction lubricants, thermal barrier coatings, thermal dispersants, oil shedding coatings & corrosion resistant coatings. Some coatings may fall into more than one of the above categories.

ANTIFRICTION COATINGS :

Consists mainly of solid film or dry film lubricants designed to reduce friction. Usually applied to piston skirts engine bearings, camshafts & lifters etc.

THERMAL BARRIER COATINGS :

Used to reduce heat migration, reflecting heat rather than absorbing it; heat management increases engine power. Applied to piston tops, combustion chambers, exhaust valves, intake valves, exhaust manifolds & headers, turbo housings & manifolds. When applied to exhausts it reduces under hood temperatures & increases engine power.

THERMAL DISPERSANT COATINGS :

The opposite of thermal barrier coatings; Rapidly disperses heat away from coated parts, ideal for intake manifolds, oil pans, & intake pipes & intercoolers for turbo applications.

OIL SHEDDING COATINGS :

Helps parts to shed oil to improve windage & oil return from reciprocating engine parts Improves high r.p.m. engine lubrication & lowers oil temperature, therefore increasing horsepower. Applied to undersides of pistons, con-rods, crankshafts, insides of oil pans & rocker covers, plus anywhere that oil return needs to be enhanced.

CORROSION RESISTANT COATINGS :

Headers rust out, intake manifolds corrode, salt water destroys boat engine parts. Some of our coatings have high corrosion resistance & can greatly increase the life of parts when coated. Our Ceramakrome- MCX - passes the 6500 hour salt spray test. ASTM 117 B.

Independent tests have shown that coated engines, tested before & then after coating, have shown horsepower increases of approx. 1.5 % min.

Header coatings have also shown decreases in temperature of 200 deg. at the surface of the pipe, thus greatly decreasing under hood heat.

9THE STEERING BIBLE

Basic Steering Components

99% of the world’s car steering systems are made up of the same three or four components. The steering wheel, which connects to the steering system, which connects to the track rod, which connects to the tie rods, which connect to the steering arms. The steering system can be one of several designs, which we’ll go into further down the page, but all the designs essentially move the track rod left-to-right across the car. The tie rods connect to the ends of the track rod with ball and socket joints, and then to the ends of the steering arms, also with ball and socket joints. The purpose of the tie rods is to allow suspension movement as well as an element of adjustability in the steering geometry. The tie rod lengths can normally be changed to achieve these different geometries.

Steering Ratios

Every vehicle has a steering ratio inherent in the design. If it didn’t you’d never be able to turn the wheels. Steering ratio gives mechanical advantage to the driver, allowing them to turn the tyres with the weight of the whole car sitting on them, but more importantly, it means the steering wheels doesn’t need to be turned a ridiculous number of times to get the wheels to move. Steering ratio is the ratio of the number of degrees turned at the steering wheel vs. the number of degrees the front wheels are deflected. So for example, if the steering wheel is turned 20° and the front wheels only turn 1°, that gives a steering ratio of 20:1. For most modern cars, the steering ratio is between 12:1 and 20:1. This, coupled with the maximum angle of deflection of the wheels gives the lock-to-lock turns for the steering wheel. For example, if a car has a steering ratio of 18:1 and the front wheels have a maximum deflection of 25°, then at 25°, the steering wheel has turned 25°x18, which is 450°. That’s only to one side, so the entire steering goes from -25° to plus 25° giving a lock-to-lock angle at the steering wheel of 900°, or 2.5 turns (900° / 360).

This works the other way around too of course. If the lock-to-lock turns and the steering ratio are known, the wheel deflection can be calculated. For example if a car is advertised as having a 16:1 steering ratio and 3 turns lock-to-lock, then the steering wheel can turn 1.5x360° (540°) each way.

Article reproduced with kind permission of Chris Longhurst, the author of Car Bibles™ © Chris Longhurst http://www.carbibles.com

THE STEERING

BIBLEAt a ratio of 16:1 that means the front wheels deflect by 33.75° each way.

For racing cars, the steering ratio is normally much smaller than for passenger cars - ie. closer to 1:1 - as the racing drivers need to get fuller deflection into the steering as quickly as possible.

Turning Circles

The turning circle of a car is the diameter of the circle described by the outside wheels when turning on full lock. There is no hard and fast forumla to calculate the turning circle but you can get close by using this:

turning circle radius = (track/2) + (wheelbase/sin(average steer angle))

The numbers required to calculate the turning circle explain why a classic black London taxi has a tiny 8m turning circle to allow it to do U-turns in the narrow London streets. In this case, the wheelbase and track aren’t radically different to any other car, but the average steering angle is huge. For comparison, a typical passenger car turning circle is normally between 11m and 13m with SUV turning circles going out as much as 15m to 17m.

Steering System Designs: Rack & Pinion

This is by far the most common type of steering found in any car today due to it’s relative simplicity and low cost. Rack and pinion systems give a much better feel for the driver, and there isn’t the slop or slack associated with steering box pitman arm type systems. The downside is that unlike those systems, rack and pinion designs have no adjustability in them, so once they wear beyond a certain mechanical tolerance, they need replacing completely. This is rare though.

In a rack and pinion system, the track rod is replaced with the steering rack which is a long, toothed bar with the tie rods attached to each end. On the end of the steering shaft there is a simple pinion gear that meshes with the rack. When the steering wheel is turned, the pinion gear turns, and moves the rack from left to right. Changing the size of the pinion gear alters the steering ratio. It really is that simple.

Variable-Ratio Rack & Pinion Steering

This is a simple variation on the above design. All the components are the same, and it all works the same except that the spacing of the teeth on the rack varies depending on how close to the centre of the rack they are. In the middle, the teeth are spaced close together to give slight steering for the first part of the turn - good for not oversteering at speed. As the teeth get further away from the centre, they increase in spacing slightly so that the wheels turn more for the same turn of the steering wheel towards full lock. Simple.

13EDITORS PICK - JAMES MAYS CARS OF THE PEOPLE

EDITORS PICKCARS OF THEPEOPLETop Gear’s James May presents this 3 part series which takes a look at the ‘peoples car’. Covering every form of cars for the masses - from the Beetle to the Kei Car,

May looks at the many forms of people’s car, their origins and their effect on history. Each episode covers a particular theme; these being cars from dictatorships, microcars and the dream cars we aspire to.

Throughout each episode, May drives a variety of cars, often giving them a mini road test while also talking about the car itself. As well as this, May also travels around the world to the country of origin of the various cars he drives, where he also performs some challenges and tests on the car. The entire show has a slight element of Top Gear about it, but it’s very much a documentary as well.

Episode 1: In his quest to discover how we, the people, got our wheels, James travels to Germany, Italy and Russia to reveal the extraordinary story of how dictators kick started the mobilization of the masses. James discovers how the British motor industry blew a gift-wrapped chance to rule the world and he gets his own back with a stunt that means bad news for one of the planet’s most hated cars.

Episode 2: James downsizes to explore the weird world of the micro car. We discover how austerity and fears of congestion led to European tragicomic disasters in the shape of Britain’s infamous three-wheelers, French death traps and German absurdities. James takes to the battlefield to settle one of the greatest rivalries in car history.

Episode 3: James reveals the unlikely champions that finally gave the people performance, pride and a hint of luxury. We discover Rolls Royce’s strange journey from the elite to the everyman and how the Mustang and the Capri pioneered excitement and performance on blue collar wages. James prepares to unveil his own choice as the ultimate Car of the People.
