Water must be prevented from getting in contact with the construction material in order to minimise maintenance cost, prolong renovation cycles or even avoid replacement purchases. Waterrepellent coating systems such as paints and plasters that provide a permanent protection of house fronts are particularly suitable for this purpose.
For water-borne paints and plasters typically a combination of polysiloxanes and silicone resins are used as water repellents. The polysiloxanes are mainly responsible for the early water resistance and the beading effect, whereas the silicone resins generally reduce the water uptake. In contrast to organic resins, silicone resins have a higher water vapour permeability which is required for a moisture exchange.
If the water vapour permeability is not ensured, mould may develop in the interior.

CHT offers a wide range of sustainable rheological additives based on guar gum and xanthan gum, which are able to fulfill the different demands of our customers.
Guar ethers with retarded swelling time (AGOCEL I-types) especially stand out by their water retention power preventing skin formation by a too rapid water evaporation. Furthermore, AGOCEL I-types provide to the final formulations a balanced pseudoplastic behaviour with an excellent combination of low shear and high shear properties. The diagram shows the viscosity of the individual AGOCEL I-products in dependence of their application concentrations at 20 rpm (Brookfield). On the other hand, the complex molecule of xanthan gum provides to the AGOCEL V-product range a rheological profile with an extremely high degree of pseudoplasticity. This property leads in the final formulations to an excellent anti-settling behaviour, avoids the formation of syneresis and improves the application properties by troweling or spraying.

In the production of water-based coating systems mostly surfactantlike components are used for the purpose of homogenisation and stabilisation. Applying such products in different process steps, negative effects are the formation or stabilisation of foam in enormous quantities. In order to decompose foam rapidly or even to prevent its formation, CHT offers a comprehensive portfolio of effective defoamers for water-based coating systems.
Due to this surface activity the limited compatibility of defoamers in coating systems must be taken into account when selecting them. The balance between compatibility and incompatibility is also decisive for the quality and suitability of a defoaming agent. With increasing incompatibility, effectiveness and long-term stability increase, while the incorporation of a defoamer into the coating formulation becomes more difficult and the tendency to surface defects is enhanced.
Very ‘incompatible’ defoamers are generally applied for the grinding of pigments as high shear forces are necessary for the incorporation. In case of reduced shear forces ‘incompatible’ defoamers are not optimally incorporated and often cause surface defects in application.

Products with a lower “incompatibility” do not provide the necessary long-term effectiveness for this grinding process to have a defoaming effect during the whole dispersing process. This product class, in most cases defoaming emulsions or formulations, is applied in the let-down stage.
Defoamer emulsions have the advantage that the active ingredients has already been predispersed and lower shear forces are needed for their incorporation. For this reason defoaming emulsions are mostly applied in production processes with lower shear forces and in readymadecoating formulations.
The absence of mineral oils, APEO or other VOC forming components make the newly developed defoamer compounds of CHT suitable for the formulation of environmentally friendly coating systems and the awarding of environmentalcertificates.

SUBSTRAT-NETZMITTEL
SUBSTRATE WETTING AGENTS
S U B S T R A T N E T Z M I T T E L | S U B S T R A T E W E T T I N G A G E N T S
The wetting of surfaces with a coating is stronglydepending on the surface tension of the coatingand the substrate. If the surface tension of the coating is lower than of the substrate, a good substrate wetting is possible.
17
Beschichtungs mittel geeignet ` Zusätzliche Anti-Krater-Eigenschaften ` Geringe Schaumneigung
With water-borne coating systems the tendency to wetting problems and surface defects is very high. Such problems are particularly noticeable when the interfacial tension of the substrate is low, e.g. with plastics or by release agents as well as by oil residues contaminated surfaces. With addition of suitable substrate wetting agents these surface defects can be prevented.
Substrate wetting agents excellently reduce the surface tension between the surface of the substrate and the wetting liquid. In this way wetting results comparable to solvent-borne systems can be obtained with water-borne formulations.
Products like HANSA ADD 1065 show additional properties like strong spreading behaviour and low foam tendency.

During the drying or curing process of water-borne coatings there exist a lot of streaming and concentration differencesin the coating matrix which can lead to a certain surface structure comparable to an orange peel. The change of density, temperature and surface tension is crutial for this process. The formation of these kind of structures can be prevented by adding specific levelling and surface additives. With the organomodified siloxanes especially developed for this application the surface tension of the complete coating film can be lowered and balanced. The formation of structures and defects can be avoided or clearly reduced and an optically homogeneous coating surface can be achieved.
Beside the levelling effect, this class of specific developed additives can adjust the following surface effects:
` Overcoatability ` Surface smoothness and slip ` Anti-stick properties ` Anti-graffiti effect ` Resistance to scratching
