Palheiro Gardens have been featured in the book “The Gardener’s Garden” by Phaidon press. The book contains a selection of 250 noteworthy gardens from around the world. Of the 250 selected gardens, fi ve are Portuguese and of those, one is in Madeira. This is the Palheiro Gardens, praised amongthe most beautiful in the world.

Palheiro Gardens also recently received a highlight from the Spanish edition of the tourism magazine Condé Nast Traveler.

The Palheiro Gardens border the Casa Velha Hotel in the grounds of the Palheiro Estate and were created by the fi rst Conde de Carvalhal some 200 years ago. They are visited by 37-40.000 people every year.

Palheiro is famous not only for the size and splendor of its trees - species such as oak, beech, cedar, chestnut and araucaria pines; but also for an extensive and rare collection of camellias, proteas and other exotics.

The Gardener’s Garden

Palheiro Estate has started a hole sponsorship program in which local and international businesses can partner with us to promote their brand both on the course and in the media, whilst their contributions help us to maintain a high standard of course conditions throughout the year.

As well as featuring their branding and logos prominently on our hole signage across the course, sponsors have a wide range of possibilities for promotion, from annual tournaments, featuring of news and off ers in our online and paper newsletter and more.

Jonathan Fletcher director of Palheiro Estate explains; ‘this year for the fi rst time we have created exciting packages, whereby guests at the Casa Velha do Palheiro or Palheiro Village will be able to participate in many of the activities going on during the week. This includes a visit to the magical Laurissilva forest to see a show, tickets to all fi lms, invitations to the opening cocktail at Belmond Reid’s as well as to the Gala dinner.’

Madeira Film Festival and Palheiro Estate

This medium-size raptor depends on it’s native habitat of the laurel forest. It is an endemic subspecies of Macaronesia which occurs only in Madeira Island and fi ve islands of the archipelago of the Canaries - Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. Due to its rapid fl ight and elusive behaviour it is diffi cult to observe, and it is more active during the breeding season (February to July). The female is larger and has a grey-brown belly whereas the male is reddish-brown.

Although only 9 nesting pairs have been offi cially identifi ed in Madeira,

they have been spotted nesting in the trees of Palheiro Gardens.
