2016 WORKBOOK

1In 2008 we became joint owners of our factory in Vietnam, giving us close control of our manufacturing processes, and a stronger relationship with our suppliers and production team.

Since then we have invested in new staff, specialist garment machinery and testing equipment, so we can be certain of the strength, durability and performance of our products before they go into production. All materials are inspected upon delivery, garments checked throughout manufacture, and every single drysuit is fully water tested before it leaves the facility.

We set high standards for training, working conditions and welfare, and it turns out that happy staff make great gear too. With awards from Vietnams trade unions, our factory achieved 99% staff retention for three years running. You will travel a very long way before you find another factory who can say that.

Were proud of our facility in Asia, and also of our team here at Palm headquarters which also continues to grow. This year we have decided to show you how we work, in a short film which takes you inside the design and manufacturing processes, from the UK to Vietnam.

When our MD Andy learned to paddle, he made his own gear out of necessity. For him, and for the rest of us at Palm, going paddling and developing gear have always been one and the same. Using the gear and making it better is what drives us, from idea, to drawing board, to prototype, to production and back on to the water.

PADDLE DESIGN BUILD REPEAT

Sea kayaking in the Scottish Highlands every day, I used the Symbiant, which was very simple and buoyant, and loved the Taupo for the wrap around fit and great pockets. So when the design team asked for feedback on a new model my request was to make something that combined the best of both.

Getting the foam template right to meet the design goals was one challenge. Making it fit precisely into a streamlined shell, to be built on a production line reliably and at a reasonable price, was another. The Hanoi sampling room worked on the patterns and seam construction, and went out to source parts to make the design a reality.

Weve been using 3D shaped foam in our PFDs for several years now, but we wanted the Peyto to be more flexible and comfortable than anything else on the market. By combining two different types of foam in layers, a thin pliable layer that wraps around in all the small spaces, and a high float foam 3D cut to hug your body, we have achieved this without sacrificing buoyancy.

Chest/bust measure horizontally under the armpits around the fullest part of your chest and shoulder blades.

Weight include all the gear youll be wearing too.

Getting the right fitAll measurements refer to body size, not garment dimensions. These charts are only a guide, few people will be the exact sizes shown. Visit your local retailer and try thegearontobesureofagoodfit.

Colour codingProfessional garments are colour coded according to size, tomakefittingeasyforcentreorcommercialuse.

Three step fitting Loosen all straps and buckles.

Put on the PFD and do up any front buckles or front zips (not including chest harnesses).

Tighten all straps, starting from the waist and working your way up-wards to the shoulder straps. Finish by sitting down and checking shoulder straps.

For harness PFDsFeed the chest harness webbing through the quick release cam buckle as illustrated.

For general use it is recommended to feed the webbing directly through the plastic cam buckle only.

For bank rescue situations the aluminium load spreader can be used in conjunction with the cam buckle.

Tip trim the length of your chest harness to reduce excess webbing. To do so, cut the end of the webbing with a sharp pair of scissors and seal the edge with a lighter. The chest harness must be trimmed to no more than 15 cm from the red line on the quick release cam buckle! Remember to allow for clothing layers.

XP 4-layer fabric Our high performance 4-layer fabric is engineered for extended durability, extra waterproofness and great breathability.

Supplex nylon 6 woven face fabric has a great soft feel and is highly durable. A DWR (durable water repellent) treatment prevents the fabric from becoming waterlogged.

A hydrophobic, microporous polyurethane coating is applied to the face fabric. The pores are too small to allow water droplets to pass through, but large enough for water vapour to pass through to the outside air.

A hydrophilic polyurethane membrane laminated to the hydrophobic coating transfers water vapour molecules along hydrophilic chains to the coating.

The nylon 20 denier tricot mesh lining protects the waterproof membrane and disperses moisture to provide the largest surface area for moisture absorption and transfer.
