Michelle-Marie Heinemann is an Etiquette Expert and Doyenne of a thou-sand exclusive parties.

Mrs. Heinemann comes to us from New York City answering those questions everybody needs to know!

Dear Mrs. Heinemann,

While dining at our private club recently, I noticed a gentleman at the adjacent table take a tooth pick from his dinner jacket and pick his teeth ferociously. While I am not one to stare I quickly turned away. Literally five minutes had passed and I glanced over and he was still cleaning his teeth with what was left of the stubby toothpick. It was revolting to watch, and listen to I might add, is this not something one should do in private?

Lauren B. Palm Beach

Dear Lauren,

Etiquette is indeed the toothpicks enemy! As my son would say....C’est degoutant!! I agree with him com-pletely as nobody wants to watch another person extract food from their teeth....how vulgar, but more so, completely unacceptable. This is an extremely private affair and should take place in the bathroom, or a place in utter solitude. Toothpicks are archaic and usually found in roadside dinners, I imagine this is why your fellow club member smuggled one in. Never use a toothpick in public, and certainly not at the table. Excuse yourself and take care of this in a discreet manner.

Yours Truly,Mrs. Heinemann

Letter from the Editor

Dear Readers, Friends, and Supporters,

We present our cover, World Affairs Council of Palm Beach, with Vice Chair-

woman Carol Jaeger and Chairman of the Board Doug Evans. Coverage of Cleveland Clinic Florida’s 2014 Ball was a blockbuster hit! More than 425 people attended this magical event. Thanks to the leadership of chairpersons Patrick Park and Geri and Frank Morrow, this year’s magical event raised an impressive $1.1 million to enhance and advance the premier medical programs and services offered at Cleveland Clinic Florida’s offices in West Palm Beach, Weston, Palm Beach Gardens and Parkland. We would also love to mention to you that the Department of Neurology at the University of Miami was celebrating its 52nd year of service to the community on March 8th, 2014 at the Breaker’s Hotel in Palm Beach by hosting the 3rd very success-ful “Solving the Neurological Puzzle” Gala, with chairs Janet Levy and Camber Ransom, featuring Celebrity Entertainer Dana Carvey!

Best wishes

for a cocktail party held at the beautiful home of Lewis and Peggy Wheeler. Lew and Peggy were married March 30th of last year at Mar-a-Lago and have since been enjoying almost a year of travel and entertaining. Their Oceanside home which is classically decorated with a fine art collection was built by Peggy and designed specifically as a gallery for this collec-tion. After the beautiful and elegant wedding at Mar-a-Largo, the year included passions that they both enjoy. The couple left for St. Barths on their honeymoon and Peggy, as a former travel writer and television talk show host, (she is also a real estate developer and has a company that designs exceptional large diamond jewelry), always looks for quaint beautiful out of the norm accommodations and restaurants. The summer also found them hosting over 300 guests in their lake home in Maryland between family, friends and charity events.Besides supporting the many social charities, this season will find them skiing at their residence in Aspen as well as a quick trip to the Carib-bean and returning to entertain additional family and friends in their beach home in Hutchin-son Island. “A wine trip might be added to the schedule,” said Peggy since Lew enjoys collect-ing and serving fine wines!

There are many reasons to celebrate Miami City Ballet’s 28th season of dance and the Palm Beach patrons who showed their support as new Artis-tic Director Lourdes Lopez marked her inaugural season of programming. The beloved dance company opened the 2013/14 season at Kravis Center in October and has premiered four rousing works new to South Florida audi-ences. Performance highlights included the Company premiere of Christopher Wheeldon’s ground-breaking work, “Polyphonia,” the emotionally evocative “Jardi Tancat,” by famed Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato, a rarely seen, boldly modern “Episodes” by George Balanchine and the hotly anticipated, “West Side Story Suite” (Jerome Robbins) that showcased the acting and singing talents of MCB dancers -- which received a standing ovation when it debuted at Kravis Center on February 28.

Herb Roemmele noted financial consultant and Senior Vice President of Wells Fargo in Shorthills, New Jersey, started an annual social event 22 years ago to maintain friendships with those who moved to Florida on a permanent basis. This event started in Boca Raton with eight in atten-dance and each year it has grown in size by leaps.

This year, the 22nd Annual Herb in Florida event was held at the Beach Club in Palm Beach with a record of 394 in attendance. The spirited crowd was entertained by the 17-piece Fusion Machine All Star Swing Band and formal pianist and vo-calist from New York Louis Parisi. Each year, Herb greets his guests and introduces distinguished guests and his two god-sons: Jacob Reynolds and Reed Kean. It has become one of the main social events in the Palm Beach area.

More than 350 guests enjoyed a dazzling dinner, dancing and entertainment at The Breakers on Satur-day, March 8, 2014 for the third Palm Beach “Solving the Neurological Puzzle Gala” benefitting the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Department of Neurology. Co-chairs of the gala, Janet Levy and Camber Ransom, orches-trated a stunning evening. Janet Levy spoke from her seat thanking her co-chair, Camber Ransom, Honorary Chair Hermé de Wyman Miro and International Chair, Lois Pope, as well as Dr. Ralph Sacco, whom she credits for helping her regain her life back after suffering a major stroke 10 years ago.

The comedian and Saturday Night Live alum Dana Carvey set the tone for the night the instant he appeared on stage. The room roared with laughter after Carvey took on the personas of his most famous charac-ters including “church lady”. He also did many “spot on” impressions of George Bush, Bill Clinton, President Obama, and Arnold Schwarzenegger that he has become known for over the years.

Dr. Ralph Sacco, chairman of the Neurology, spoke briefly, then introduced Roy Roden, a UM Parkinson’s patient who has successfully overcome many of the challenges that Parkinson’s presents with the help of the University of Miami, Department of Neurology.

The band “Hot Property” went into full action around 9:30 and got everyone up and onto the dance floor until midnight.

For its annual party and show, the Palm Beach Theater Guild staged “Singing for Sailors and Soldiers,” a cabaret that asked the audience to imagine a performance for troops by Hollywood celebrities in Palm Beach. The event took place at 264 The Grill on Tuesday, February 25, and featured cocktails, a three-course din-ner and hit songs sung by a cast that included pianist Confrey Phillips, Anne Marie Haymes, Mia Matthews, Jo Ann Pflug, Adele Zin and Palm Beach troupers Debbie Daley, Herbert Gould, Alan Heyman, David Lucey, Sonia Reese, Douglas Rill and Kristi Witker. The show was writ-ten and directed by multiple-Emmy winner Paul Noble, with art work and Palm Beach historical research by Pat Crowley.

On April 8 at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, the Palm Beach Theater Guild will present its opera-themed cocktail party and performances of selected, beloved arias in “A Night in Florence with the Florentine Camerata,” an evening based on the group of gentry, composers, writers and literati who met in a noble house in Renaissance Florence to talk about music and drama and, by 1600, invented the art form of opera.
