Palm Sunday of The Passion Of The Lord

FROM FATHER JOHN: “We are on pilgrimage with the Lord to the heights. We are striving for pure hearts and clean hands, we are seeking truth, we are seeking the face of God. Let us show the Lord that we desire to be righteous, and let us ask him: Draw us upwards! Make us pure! Grant that the words which we sang in the processional psalm may also hold true for us; grant that we may be part of the generation which seeks God, “which seeks your face, O God of Jacob” (cf. Ps 24:6). Amen.” (Pope Benedict XVI, Sermon, Palm Sunday 2011) Today is Palm Sunday. It is also the beginning of Holy Week, which has as its purpose the remembrance of our Lord Jesus Christ’s passion and death. It leads into the Easter Triduum which continues the remembrance of our Lord Jesus Christ’s passion and death but then culminates in the resurrection of our Lord which we celebrate on Easter Sunday. We begin this most Holy of Weeks by celebrating the Commemoration of our Lord Jesus’ Messianic entrance into Jerusalem with the Blessing of the Palms and the Solemn Procession into the Church. We conclude this most Holy of Weeks with the celebration of the resurrection of our Lord. And, throughout this most Holy of Weeks, we enter deeply into the Mystery of our Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection. The Easter Triduum is ultimately about what our Lord Jesus has done for us. It’s about the Resurrection, it’s about salvation, it’s about eternal life. Easter is about what we all long for, what humanity has longed for across the ages – immortality. We have received this great gift of immortality, this great promise of eternal life which comes to us through the passion, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. There are two different sets of tombstones in Rome; those of the pagans and those of the Christians. The pagans’ tombstones are inscribed with words like “farewell” and “nevermore” while the Christians’ tombstones are inscribed with words like “Until we meet again." and “Alive in the Lord.” Jesus did something that had never been done before in the history of the world. He totally emptied himself of his own desires, his own needs and completely lived for the good of others. He lived for our good – your good and my good – to such a degree that he allowed himself to be sacrificed on the cross so that in His Resurrection you and I would also rise from the dead. And, that is what Holy Week is about – The Lord Jesus giving us the gift of eternal life, the gift of salvation, the gift of immortality, the gift of our resurrection.

“Today’s liturgy teaches us that the Lord has not saved us by His triumphal entry or by means of powerful miracles. The Apostle Paul, in the second reading, epitomizes in two verbs the path of redemption: Jesus “emptied” and “humbled” Himself (Phil 2:7-8). These two verbs show the boundlessness of God’s love for us. Jesus emptied Himself: He did not cling to the glory that was His as the Son of God, but became the Son of man in order to be in solidarity with us sinners in all things; yet He was without sin. Even more, He lived among us in “the condition of a servant” (v. 7); not of a king or a prince, but of a servant. Therefore He humbled Himself, and the abyss of His humiliation, as Holy Week shows us, seems to be bottomless. The first sign of this love “without end” (Jn 13:1) is the washing of the feet. “The Lord and Master” (Jn 13:14) stoops to His disciples’ feet, as only servants would have done. He shows us by example that we need to allow His love to reach us, a love which bends down to us; we cannot do any less, we cannot love without letting ourselves be loved by Him first, without experiencing His surprising tenderness and without accepting that true love consists in concrete service.” (Pope Francis, Palm Sunday, March, 20 2016)

I think it is important that, as we approach the end of the Lenten season and the great celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus throughout the Easter Triduum, each of us makes a careful examination of our practice of the faith.

“So let us spread before his feet, not garments or soulless olive branches, which delight the eye for a few hours and then wither, but ourselves, clothed in his grace, or rather, clothed completely in him. We who have been baptized into Christ must ourselves be the garments that we spread before him. Now that the crimson stains of our sins have been washed away in the saving waters of baptism and we have become white as pure wool, let us present the conqueror of death, not with mere branches of palms but with the real rewards of his victory. Let our souls take the place of the welcoming branches as we join today in the children’s holy song: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is the king of Israel.” (St. Andrew of Crete)

Let us keep in mind what our Lord Jesus Christ has done for us and, in doing so, be inspired to respond to the gift that our Lord bestows on us. “Someone must acknowledge Christ’s royalty. The question for me to answer today, as I receive and carry my palm, is: Am I going to be the one, or am I going to leave it to others? It is my king riding there, riding on to die for me!” (Mother St. Paul) May you have a most Blessed and Holy, Holy Week!

LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. All from the age of 18 years up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord – 25 March 2018 – Year B The final week. The week begins with blessed hosannas. Then a broken jar of perfumed oil poured on one head. Then a meal with new bread and new wine. Then a garden. Then the cross. Then burial and waiting.

How will I slow down and keep this week holy? How will I mark the days of the Paschal Triduum

with special prayer? How will participation in the rites of

Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil enrich my Christian life?

Lent summons us, and enables us, to come back to

the Lord wholeheartedly and in every aspect of our life. Pope Francis
