Unbeknownst to residents, the plan had already been set into motion by the leadership at HUB long before word began to spread. At a recent community gathering at HUB, organized by concerned 10th St. resident Vanessa Pomales, with assistance from Buffalo Common Council President Darius Pridgen’s office, the organization's Executive Director Eugenio Russi informed those in attendance that he had no intention of letting anyone in the community know about HUB's proposed plan to open the methadone clinic until after it was open and providing services.How did plans to open a methadone clinic in this densely populated residential

neighborhood go undetected by residents, community leaders, and elected officials for so long? Why did leadership at HUB hide this from its community?Mr. Russi repeatedly told the audience at the recent meeting, which included

As word spread about the opening of the methadone clinic at HUB, concerned resident Vanessa Pomales asked for my help to prevent the methadone clinic from opening. When I contacted community leaders for their reaction most were concerned if not outraged. While no one I spoke with is opposed to the idea of a methadone clinic, those opposed are concerned for the children who go to school across the street from the proposed site, the seniors who utilize the building for recreational purposes and the surrounding neighborhood. A meeting was held with Buffalo Common Council President and Ellicott District Councilman Darius Pridgen, who arranged for the meeting to be held at HUB’s Virginia Street site, Niagara District Councilman David Rivera and a representative from Fillmore District Councilman David A. Franczyk’s office. Additionally, a businessman who invested over a million dollars into a nearby apartment complex was in attendance and expressed his dissatisfaction with the project.Mr. Russi spent the better half of the meeting giving those in attendance a history of the organization and the “positive” effects of methadone clinics and left little room questions. He skipped over their concerns to show the physical changes they’ve made to the the 2nd floor of the building to accommodate the proposed methadone clinic. Mr. Russi went into detail about the safety measures his organization is taking to ensure that clients and employees are safe, including mounting cameras throughout the exterior and interior of the building and hiring two security officers – all while attempting to convince those in attendance that the community has nothing to be worried about. When he allowed for questions from the audience there were a broad range of topics discussed, but the questions primarily focused on safety. Responses coming from Mr. Russi failed to ease their concerns. I prodded Mr. Russi to reveal the timeline and learned that his plan is to open the methadone clinic by July 1st. Subsequently, councilman Fronziak issued a statement denouncing HUB’s plans and later proposed a resolution, passed by the Common Council, titled “Prevent HUB Methadone Clinic on Virginia Street." Among the most critical aspects, the resolution states:

“That the Common Council requests that HUB put a moratorium on the plan for a methadone clinic on Virginia Street, and that HUB fully communicate with the City of Buffalo, Common Council, and the above mentioned block clubs, community associations and concerned citizens should they propose to move the methadone clinic to a more appropriate hospital/clinical setting or area outside of the residential neighborhood;

That the Buffalo Police Department opine on how they believe the location of a methadone clinic on Virginia Street will impact on their ability to keep the neighborhood safe from crime;That the City Law Department advise the Common Council on any applicable city, state or federal laws, regulations or statutes which govern the placement of methadone clinics in Buffalo.”The resolution gained wide coverage from local media organizations including CBS affiliate WIVB-TV and Time Warner Cable News.Later, the VETTE Block Club issued a statement in opposition to the proposed clinic:“As a group majority, the VETTE Block Club stands in opposition to the opening of a methadone clinic at 254 Virginia Street by the Hispanics United of Buffalo organization. The VETTE Block Club is sympathetic to those with substance abuse disorders and recognizes that heroin and opioid addiction is a particularly difficult and complex disease to overcome. We fully support the treatment of this disease. However, in full recognition of the various needs of the members of this community, we do not feel that it is suitable for this type of drug treatment facility to be placed in a residential area. We strongly feel this clinic is better suited to be located in a commercial zone and/or established medical facility for the safety of all involved. Furthermore, the manner in which Hispanics United of Buffalo has gone about implementing their plans for this clinic in our shared district, without educating this community or soliciting its input, has concerned us as a group. We are taking action to discuss and identify what is in the best interest of the community, including those afflicted by opioid addiction.”

This battle is far from over. HUB has shown no signs of relenting or changing course despite strong concerns from neighboring organizations, residents, and local leaders. It will be a long road before HUB is the "good neighbor" it claims to be.

surveyed the Hispanic community, there are several issues that consistently rank higher on the list than immigration. In 2013, some 57% of Hispanic registered voters called education an “extremely important” issue facing the nation today. That’s compared with jobs and the economy (52%) and health care (43%). Just 32% said immigration.Since 2007, about one-third of Hispanic registered voters have called immigration an “extremely important” issue to them personally. Even among Hispanic immigrants, the share was 35% in 2012.While about seven-in-ten of all Latinos in 2013 said it was important for Congress to pass significant new immigration legislation that year, the share who said so was higher among immigrants (80%) than among the U.S. born (57%). Among the general public, 49% of U.S. adults said so when asked the same question in February.In some respects, Hispanics’ focus on education as a top issue makes sense. In 2010, Hispanics had the highest birth rates—80 births per 1,000 women of childbearing age, compared with 64 for blacks, 59 for whites and 56 for Asians. Fully one-in-three (33%) Hispanics are school age (under 18), compared with one-in-five (20%) whites.The economy has been another top issue among Hispanics, who said the recession hit them harder than other groups. Among Hispanics in 2012, the economy and jobs (54%) ranked about as high as education (55%) as an issue “extremely important” to them personally. The unemployment rate among Hispanics peaked at 12.3% in 2010, compared with 8.9% among non-Hispanics. The unemployment rate for Hispanics has steadily fallen since then (8.9% in 2013), but remains above pre-recession levels (4.9% in 2006).

is the lowest it been in 50 years. • He’s annoyed the public-employee unions. He tightened the state school-aid spigot and put in his property-tax cap, making it harder for teachers locals across New York to win higher pay. Then he pushed for test-based teacher evaluations, anathema to the unions. (Yes, the scheme never had real teeth, but unions can’t stand the precedent.) And he topped it all off with his embrace of charters — which the unions, not without reason, see as a naked bid for fat hedge-fund donations. Other unions feel burned because he forced modest contracts on most state-employee unions and won minor public-pension reforms. They won’t go to war on him for that — but why should they lift a finger to help?Now his sudden rush to win some union friends is getting ugly. Few voters will notice or care that the Transit Workers Union contract pays for raises by adding hundreds of millions to the MTA’s long-term liabilities — but they can understand a $6 million TWU slush fund. • His robotic pretense that he’s still “studying” fracking after three-plus years is an oozing political sore. It tells people leading hardscrabble lives all across Upstate that he cares more about millionaires and special interests than he does about them — and doesn’t even have the guts to be upfront about it. The hypocrisy of his pose is so rank, it’s hard to see how anyone can trust his word on anything, public or private. • He backs the Independent Democratic Caucus, which sides with the Republicans to control the majority-Democratic state Senate. The black and Hispanic Democrats shut out by that scheme know who’s really to blame. • He played the anti-corruption card for short-termgain. He’s shutting down his Moreland Commission, with nary a corrupt scalp collected, now that the Legislature’s gone his way this year. Cuomo hasn’t moved to clean up the Albany sewer, just sprayed a little air freshener. Better hope PreetBharara doesn’t indict any more state senators before November. (Not a good bet.) • He burned the cardinal, too. When Cuomo jumped in on charters, he used chits that could’ve gone to pass the education-tax-credit bill. The archbishop of New York plainly thought he had a firm promise the bill would become law — and (as President Obama learned on abortion and ObamaCare) the cardinal has ways of getting back at deal-breakers. • His gimmicky “reforms” insult those they’re supposed to help. Has “Start Up New York” fostered a single startup? Are you going to change your vote thanks to a $500 “rebate” check on your $15,000 property-tax bill? Oh, and the public-campaign-finance nuts rightly aren’t buying his “demonstration” run of their system in the state comptroller’s race. • He keeps slapping the other two top state officerholders. The latest: Comptroller Tom di Napoli didn’t even get a heads-up that his race was going to be that public-campaign-finance “demonstration,” while Attorney General Eric Schneiderman had control of the hundreds of millions in the JP Morgan mortgage settlement yanked away. Di Napoli can embarrass the governor just by running a few numbers honestly. Schneiderman has a legal role in Cuomo’s now-squelched Moreland Commission — wonder if his office is behind any of those embarrassing leaks about how political it was? • He’s facing a surprisingly united GOP opposition. Sure, some of the most “transactional” Republicans in state politics will endorse him — but that highlights Cuomo’s air-freshener approach to Albany corruption. • His Republican opponent is the party’s best natural statewide candidate in living memory. Sure, Rob Astorino is pro-life and anti-anti-gun. But he’s relaxed and charming where Cuomo is tense and brittle. And he’s won twice in Democratic, swing-county Westchester, running up a solid record of trimming government, cutting taxes and fostering new jobs. That’s going to matter a lot to any voters who happen to focus on jobs. Astorino’s still a long-shot to win — but an ever-better bet to hold the governor below 55 percent. That would be a huge defeat for a guy who wants a blowout to bolster his chances for a presidential run in 2016.

King.Units recognized include the Navajo and Native American code talkers, the Women's Airforce Service Pilots and the Tuskegee Airmen."Only a handful of military units have ever received this award, and only one other Hispanic-American has received this award: Roberto Clemente," Obama said, referring to the baseball hall-of-famer who died in a plane crash during an off-season humanitarian mission. "So on behalf of the American people, we want to thank all the Borinqueneers for their extraordinary service. You've earned a hallowed place in our history."

Former Brockport Walmart being considered to house illegal immigrant childrenCongressman Chris Collins says the Department of Health and Human Services is looking at a former local Walmart to temporarily house undocumented immigrant children. These children have come into the U.S. without their parents.On Monday, we told you the department was looking at the Lexington Commerce Center in Greece but we've learned that's been ruled out. Now, Collins says the Walmart on Route 19 in Brockport in the Town of Sweden is under consideration.“All these children definitely need a place, but I’m not sure how it would be run down there.” Judy Hughes is concerned about who's going to look after the children, who's going to feed them and who's going to pay for them?We’re told all the costs will be covered by the federal government but those costs will be covered by your federal tax dollars.This is the second local location picked to house the children. The old Walmart store is bigger and have more bathrooms.There are as many as 10,000 children coming into this country without their parents every month. The government is looking for places to house them until they can reunite them with their family in their home country. It's a humanitarian crisis that could end up in our backyard.Hughes said, “I mean if they could get over into the United States without any help, they could be out on the streets and getting into trouble. It's hard to tell.”The Towns of Greece and Sweden didn't know about the possibilities until we alerted them. We found out because Congressman Chris Collins told News10NBC about it.He says it's a humanitarian crisis. The children need to be housed and looked after. But not here.

"I don't believe New York should be on the list," Collins said. Brean: Why not? Rep. Collins: Well because ultimately, if not immediately I'm convinced there will be a cost that will be passed on to the New York taxpayers.Brean: So if not here, then where? Rep. Collins: I would just suggest not here. My comment is, they're crossing the border in Texas and Arizona, that's where they should be.Senator Chuck Schumer says the senate has passed an immigration bill that would seal the border. County Executive asking for state money to update Frontier FieldCould Frontier Field soon have some work done? We’ve learned Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks is asking the County Legislature to submit an application for state money for updates at the baseball stadium.In her letter, Brooks says the money would be used for things like replacing the field, equipment upgrades and painting.Brooks is asking for $4.5-million from state money with $3-million to come from Monroe County through its capital improvement program and Rochester Community Baseball. The project would cost $7.5-million.

NYS Labor Department releases May unemployment rate for Rochester areaThe New York State Labor Department released the unemployment rate for the Rochester area for May.The Greater Rochester area unemployment rate is 5.8%, which is down from 7.0% a year ago. The unemployment rate in April 2014 was 5.5%.

Es una idea completamente mala” , dijo el vecino Raúl Hernández. “Ellos tienen un programa de la tercera edad, Empleo juvenil y el de violencia doméstica en el mismo edificio, las personas de la tercera edad y jóvenes estarán fuera de peligro si van al mismo sitio?” dijo Vanessa Pomales, vecina que vive a una calle de distancia del lugar.El concejal David Rivera dijo que el programa está el mal sitio. Luis Gutierrez: House GOP's Time Is Up On ImmigrationWASHINGTON -- The biggest advocate for comprehensive immigration reform put the final nail in its coffin on Wednesday, declaring on the House floor that House Republicans' time is up and that instead, the president himself should move to limit deportations. "I gave you the warning three months ago, and now I have no other choice," Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) said. "You're done. ... Having been given ample time and space to craft legislation, you failed. The president now has no other choice but to act within existing law to ensure that our deportation policies are humane."While prospects for immigration reform have been dim for months, some supporters have continued to say publicly there’s still hope for the House of Representatives to move on the issue. President Barack Obama delayed a review of his deportation policy in order to give House Republicans more time to act, and reform architects Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) said even as recently as Wednesday morning that they weren’t ready to give up. Gutierrez has advocated for the president to limit deportations, but he accepted Obama's decision to delay the review. He previously said the House would have until the July Fourth recess to move on immigration reform, given the few legislative days left and the upcoming midterm elections. On Wednesday, he said the countdown was over. The House will adjourn on Thursday and won’t be back in Washington until July 8, leaving only seven weeks in session until the November elections. At this point, Gutierrez said, the president should move forward in slowing the rate of deportations. He gave House Republicans a metaphorical red card for stalling on reform. "Leave the field," he said. "Too many flagrant offenses and unfair attacks, and too little action. You're out, hit the showers."The Obama administration hasn't indicated whether it has given up on the House. But White House spokesman Josh Earnest acknowledged on Tuesday that the administration hasn't seen any movement on the issue. He was asked at a press briefing whether the White House has seen signs the GOP plans to act on immigration in the window Obama gave them for this summer. "Sadly, no," he replied. Gutierrez’s comments stood in contrast to statements made by Schumer and McCain hours before. The senators were members of the so-called “gang of eight” that drafted a comprehensive immigration bill that passed the Senate almost a year ago, on July 27, 2013. Speaking at an event hosted by the Wall Street Journal, McCain and Schumer said they're going to continue to press House Republicans to move forward. "I can’t tell you ... that we have a great shot at it, but I know the consequences of failure, which will motivate me to continue to try no matter what," McCain said. Reform has been complicated by two recent events, although it hadn’t seemed likely to move even before they happened. One was the defeat of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) in his Republican primary June 10. Although his loss likely wasn’t entirely about immigration, his opponent, Dave Brat, campaigned largely on the accusation that Cantor was for “amnesty.” Within minutes of Cantor’s defeat, pundits were declaring reform eventually dead, positing that House Republicans wouldn’t address the issue after seeing it could be so politically damaging. The other issue that has hurt reform's chances is a recent humanitarian crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border, where 52,000 unaccompanied minors have been apprehended crossing illegally since the beginning of the fiscal year last October. Many Republicans, particularly those in the House, laid the blame for the crisis on Obama, saying he encouraged illegal immigration through policies such as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy, or DACA. DACA allows undocumented young people who came to the U.S. as children before June 2007 to stay and work for two or more years.

Huge economic challenge ahead, says Cuban president(HAVANA, Cuba (ACN) -- President Raul Castro headed a meeting of Cuba's Council of Ministers last Saturday in which he called for deeper analysis of the challenges that continue to affect the country’s economic growth. "We have a huge challenge ahead, and we must not let the problems overwhelm us," he noted.Economy and planning minister Adel Yzquierdo submitted the economic report for the first semester of this year by explaining that although the Cuban economy grew compared to 2013, expected levels will not be reached, indicating a greater economic slowdown than foreseen. He said that the country's gross domestic product (GDP) will grow some 1.4 percent by the end of the year.As to the investment plan, the minister pointed to a 95 percent estimate by the end of 2014.Government vice-president Marino Murrillo Jorge referred to the ongoing currency unification process by explaining that some actions have included the training of personnel at different entities in order to carry out the program. However, he insisted that the currency unification by itself will not solve all the problems facing Cuban economy, but it is a crucial part of the whole process, which takes other policies aimed at increasing efficiency and productivity.Murillo also referred to the new Foreign Investment Law, which comes into force on June 28, and to a gradual process that gives larger autonomy to government companies, implying more responsibilities for executives, officials and members of that sector.The vice-president said that at present a total 249 cooperatives are in operation in different

Familias 'sin techo' ocupan terreno en Sao PauloHasta el momento 800 familias se instalaron en el barrio paulistano de Morumbi, en la zona rica de Sao Paulo(SAO PAULO, BRASIL).- Al menos 800 familias "sin techo" ocuparon hoy un terreno particular en el barrio paulistano de Morumbi, en la zona rica de Sao Paulo, informaron los organizadores del campamento destinado a exigir vivienda.La ocupación comenzó la madrugada del sábado y hasta el momento han sido instaladas unas 600 barracas de lona y bambú, según cálculos del Movimiento de los Trabajadores Sin Techo (MTST).El MTST denunció en su página web que el terreno se encuentra localizado en una de las regiones de Sao Paulo "donde la especulación inmobiliaria se expande como una epidemia, teniendo efectos perversos como el aumento desenfrenado y abusivo de los alquileres"."Esto lleva a la expulsión de familias enteras para otros barrios con menos estructura", alertó el movimiento, quien manifestó que la "desigualdad en el barrio es explícita".Más de mil 500 familias ocuparon también el pasado mes de mayo un terreno privado situado a unos cuatro kilómetros del estadio Arena Corinthians, una de las doce sedes del Mundial y que fue bautizado como "Copa del Pueblo".GuilhermeBoulos, uno de los coordinadores nacionales del MTST, dijo que los "sin techo" permanecerán en los campamentos hasta que el Gobierno regional ofrezca soluciones para una vivienda digna.En los últimos meses el MTST ha organizado diversas marchas en la capital paulista que congregaron a miles de personas, aunque días antes del inicio del Mundial el movimiento anunció protestas "menos intensas" después de que el Gobierno aceptara alguna de sus demandas.Los "sin techo", sin embargo, amenazaron con más movilizaciones, como la protagonizada el viernes por tres mil integrantes del Movimiento que salieron a las calles de la mayor ciudad de Brasil para pedir la aprobación definitiva del Plan Director de Sao Paulo, que define el crecimiento de la ciudad en los próximos años.

Technology & ScienceConsejos para cuidar y alargar la vida de tu Smartphone(CIUDAD DE MÉXICO) Es una realidad, en la sociedad en la que vivimos cada vez es más complicado encontrar a una persona que no ande por el mundo con un smartphone, sí, esos celulares que parecen ser más inteligentes que tú mismo y que pueden hacer mil y un cosas a la vez.Sin embargo, y pese a eso, debemos recordar siempre algo: son máquinas, y como tales deben cuidarse y recibir el mantenimiento adecuado para poder funcionar perfectamente y por más tiempo.¿Quién de ustedes se ha dedicado a leer el manual de instrucciones que viene adjunto a la caja del teléfono celular que acaban de adquirir antes de utilizarlo? Generalmente nadie lo hace y por eso consideramos fundamental que pongas atención en esta nota.- Transpórtalo con cuidado. Este punto es fundamental para que el teléfono se encuentre siempre en buen estado, tanto interno como externo. No lo coloques en los bolsillos junto con objetos duros, especialmente llaves, aun si tu smartphone cuenta con una funda protectora.- No a los cambios de temperatura. No lo expongas a temperaturas extremadamente altas o bajas, ni a cambios bruscos de temperatura porque produce condensación de humedad. Tu móvil posee unas etiquetas internas que muestran si el teléfono ha tenido humedad.- Extiende la duración de la batería. Descubren método que acelera la regeneración de células del corazónPodría facilitar la recuperación de los pacientes afectados de paros cardíacos y reducir sus secuelas físicas(TOKIO, JAPÓN)Investigadores nipones ha descubierto un método para reprogramar las células del corazón que podría facilitar la recuperación de los pacientes afectados de paros cardíacos y reducir sus secuelas físicas, según publica hoy el diario Nikkei. El sistema consiste en modificar los genes de los fibroblastos, un tipo de células que desempeñan un papel muy importante en la cicatrización y producción de colágeno, para convertirlas en cardiomiocitos (células del miocardio o músculo cardíaco capaces de contraerse y responsables de los latidos del corazón). En experimentos realizados con ratones, los investigadores han logrado reprogamar fibroblastos del corazón de estos animales para transformarlas en cardiomiocitos añadiendo cinco tipos diferente de genes y un tipo de ácido ribonucleico, conversión que se llevó a cabo en el plazo de un mes. De ser efectivo también en humanos, este método podría ofrecer una alternativa más rápida que otros que se prueban actualmente para desarrollar cardiomiocitos a partir de

IPS (células adultas a células madre pluripotentes inducidas). Además, el sistema de los investigadores nipones sería menos agresivo para el paciente ya que consiste en inyectar el "cóctel" de genes directamente en el corazón para inducir la reprogramación celular, mientras que el método basado en IPS requiere cirugía abierta. En la UNAM trabajan en medicamento contra el ParkinsonDicho padecimiento es la cuarta causa de consulta en instituciones especializadas(CIUDAD DE MÉXICO)La investigadora Anahí Chavarría Krauser, de la Facultad de Medicina de la UNAM, ensaya un camino bioquímico para detener la muerte de neuronas dopaminérgicas, característica de la enfermedad de Parkinson.Dicho padecimiento es la cuarta causa de consulta en instituciones especializadas, como el Instituto Nacional de Neurología y Neurocirugía Manuel Velasco Suárez. En un comunicado, la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) informó que la especialista trabaja a partir de silimarina, un extracto antioxidante y antiinflamatorio proveniente de la planta mediterránea Silybummarianum. Señaló que en lugar de medicamentos que doten a los pacientes de dopamina, sustancia que falta al cerebro en presencia de ese mal neurodegenerativo, la científica prueba el efecto neuroprotector del compuesto en un modelo experimental de ratones, para frenar el deterioro que el estrés oxidativo y la inflamación ocasionan en esas células cerebrales. Trabaja en la dosis precisa que podría funcionar como medicamento a base de silimarina para humanos y se tramita la patente para su aplicación. Chavarría Krauser, adscrita al Departamento de Medicina Experimental que comparten la Facultad de Medicina y el Hospital General de México, explicó que el Parkinson se caracteriza porque el estrés oxidativo y la inflamación llevan a la muerte de las hormonas dopaminérgicas. "Buscamos detener ese proceso al evitar la oxidación y la inflamación en etapas tempranas de la enfermedad", detalló. Señaló que en general cuando el paciente es diagnosticado con esa afección ya ha perdido entre 70 y 80 por ciento de sus neuronas dopaminérgicas y padece un daño irreversible. Dijo que para mantener en funcionamiento al resto de esas células, se trata a los enfermos con levodopa, un agonista dopaminérgico, para controlar parcialmente los síntomas, que consisten en movimientos involuntarios de músculos, temblores en brazos, piernas, mandíbula y cara. También se manifiesta rigidez en tronco y las extremidades, lentitud en los movimientos, problemas de equilibrio y coordinación y dificultades para masticar, tragar o hablar. "Después de un tiempo, la mayoría de los pacientes presenta resistencia a la levodopa", indicó la científica, quien con su estrategia ensaya un proceso que prevenga la muerte neuronal. Consideró que el complemento ideal de este trabajo sería contar con diagnósticos tempranos, algún marcador biológico que permita conocer a detalle el desarrollo bioquímico de la enfermedad, con la finalidad de administrar oportunamente los neuroprotectores.

Noticias de Erie PABoard to Pass Budget Without Teacher ContractAt its regular meeting, the school board of Erie's Public Schools is expected to approve a new budget for the coming year. It's a 149 million dollar spending plan, balanced without a tax increase. Superintendent, Dr. Jay Badams says a one time, one million dollar insurance payment and over 70 retirements, 52 of them teachers, helped to balance the budget. Erie's Public Schools will enter the budget year without a new contract for the district's 900 union teachers. That keeps labor costs steady for now. "We have essentially a year unless agreement is reached between now and the start of the new year," said Dr. Badams, "so we know what our labor costs will be, salaries will stay the same as they are right now without any increase."Greg Henderson, President of the the Erie Education Association, the union representing teachers said, "We could go several years without it, a lot of other school districts are in the same shape." The teacher's contract expires June 30th. The union president says they'd rather have an extension than face possible pay hikes for health benefits. Teachers say they are also keeping an eye on the governor's race in Harrisburg. They are concerned about pension reforms and education funding in general.According to Dr. Badams, one bright spot through these difficult budget years is that teacher development has not suffered. "We haven't missed a beat in terms of professional development for teachers and administrators and that's because we had the GE Developing Futures grant, so we've had the cutting edge of professional development a lot of it," said Badams.

ASHTA Chemicals Announces Plan To Invest $60 Million Into Its Ashtabula PlantASHTA Chemicals Inc. proved its commitment to the community by unveiling a plan to invest $60 million nto its Ashtabula production facility. The new upgrades will improve energy efficiency, and add job security for the company's 90 employees. "We have a terrific work force, a great group of employees, highly trained and skilled and it was really big factor in making the decision to stay here in northeast Ohio," said President of ASHTA Chemicals Inc., Brad Westfall. "So for me, it's just as exciting to make this announcement for our employees and their families." One of those employees is John Metzler, who said he is both excited and relieved to know ASHTA plans to stay in northeast Ohio. "We see a lot of companies and other companies that are leaving the area and this company is really committing to our area and helping us grow and helping us stay in this environment and this county," said Metzler. "So I'm really happy about that."The chemical manufacturer is partnering with Jacobs Engineering Group and INEOS Technology to replace the plants "mercury cell process" with an environmentally friendly process called "membrane cell technology.""Without mercury in the process, mercury will literally not be here on site anymore," said Westfall. "And it's just a terrific win for the environment for sure, and particularly the Great Lakes."The conversion will also reduce the company's energy consumption by 20-percent. The upgrades are expected to be completed within 24 to 30 months.

No More Stuff. Basta Ya. By The Justo González, II, M.Div., M.S.S.A., M.A.P.M.

Last week a full day spring cleaning took me on an adventure. I suspect you are familiar with this adventure and it’s probably inviting you to the same hard work that was put before me. Ministry and love has taken me to multiple states for additional education, pastoral ministry and to be there supporting my partner. As a result of these rich experiences and the pains of my life, I’ve been carrying boxes of physical, emotional and spiritual stuff from state to state and relationship to relationship. I’m tired of carrying stuff. Maybe, just maybe, you are too?“Rev. González” has his stuff together. Believe that even if it’s not always true. I want you to see that I am well rounded and that I am a centered individual. Most times I am. Being 53 and living all the up and downs of life has both beat me up and taught me well. The joys have helped me become who I am. My successes have given me confidence. Family, friends and mentors have guided me towards the right path for me. There is, of course, another side too. La verdad es (The truth is) that life has given me a smack down more than once. I have been dumb and I have made bad choices. I don’t like admitting that. Who does? Yet, in admitting my flaws and my brokenness I have grown even more than when everything is good. I haven’t enjoyed getting beaten up by life, love, other people, ministry, my own insecurities and all the curve balls that have come my way. Can a pastor say, “Oh, hell no I haven’t enjoyed those things”? Like all us, I’ve had to make some tough decisions and my toughest decisions are those that cause me to look inward. I just want to get it over with and move on but I’ve learned that simplistic response lacks a profound understanding of the work that needs to be done to come to my own internal healing. It’s not only about others forgiving me. It’s about Justo forgiving Justo. It’s about you forgiving yourself for the pains you’ve caused, the disappointments of your life, the anger and rage that is within and ultimately finding your peace.

No one can take away your peace unless you let them. Give no one that much power over your life and happiness.

I’ve humbled myself, accepted responsibility for my actions and have asked for forgiveness even though those who have hurt me should really have been asking forgiveness of me for their actions. Daring to admit your flaws and forgiving others for the things that they have done that have caused you pain isn’t easy. Easy is for wimps. The hard work of asking forgiveness is about peace. Find your peace. Forgiveness isn’t about the other person. It’s about you coming to terms with a situation and claiming your peace. Receive your peace this day. What I’ve learned is that you don’t have to be right. It’s ok to say I don’t know. There is power in admitting that we messed up. It’s ok to be human and not have all the answers. Indeed, it’s even ok not to have any answers. But no, most people can’t do that. Society and our Latino@ culture have told us to be right and argue and fight. Most of us have heard the saying, “el o ella me lo hizo y el o ella me lo va pagar.” It is ALWAYS easier to blame others. It is NEVER easy to look at ourselves honestly and openly and own our own stuff. My boxes invited me to look at the reality of my past life and acknowledge how my words, actions and deeds caused me lots of trouble. Indeed, I have hurt others even when I did not desire to do so. As a younger man, I was unable to own my stuff. So I did what many do and have done: BLAME OTHERS. What good does that do? Over the years I have even forgotten the contents within each box that has travelled with me. I only knew that I needed to carry that stuff with me. There are so many of us carrying stuff we feel the need to carry when in reality God is calling us to the Spring Cleaning of our lives. As a pastor and a therapist, I have experienced firsthand that I am not the only one that carries stuff around from one place to another. What are you carrying around? More importantly, why are you still carrying it around? Carry that which brings life-giving energy into your life. Yet, we are also called to look at the painful stuff. The hard stuff. If we only focus on the joys of life we will create a delusional image of ourselves. Real men and women don’t run from the pains of yesterday. It’s time for many of us to get real. We’ve got business to handle. Let’s do this. Stuff happens. Stuff hurts. Stuff has caused pain in your life and may even have you stuck right now. Stuck on stuff is not a good thing. Like the Israelites of the Hebrew Bible many of us have made a 40 day walk and 40 year process of walking in circles of pain, hurt and brokenness. Ignoring your pain, your brokenness and the hurts of your soul is a modern day form of walking in the desert. Aren’t you tired already of carry the stuff of your life with you everywhere you go? Isn’t that painful enough? So why do you also walk in circles going nowhere fast? Aren’t you tired of finding out you were at the same place in your life yesterday? How about moving forward rather than in a circle?When we don’t deal with the inner issues of pain, hurt, loneliness, self-esteem or the lack of feeling loveable or experiencing true love in our lives we choose to go nowhere. Nowhere is a painful and dreadful merry-go-round that condemns us to reliving negative behaviors, past pains and leaves us with an internal void. Maybe there is a better way? The boxes of our lives revisit us to teach us a lesson. Are you paying attention? What are your boxes of stuff hoping for you to discover that maybe you missed on the last visit of those boxes? José Luis Chávez Botello, llamó a las autoridades a enfrentar el problema del bullying en los colegios, sin embargo, advirtió que esta conducta es consecuencia de la violencia dentro de las familias y de ciertos programas de televisión.

Según la prensa local, en su homilía, el Prelado dijo que este problema se “inicia en las casas con violencia intrafamiliar y en los medios de comunicación, principalmente en los programas que se difunden en la televisión abierta”.Por ello, llamó a trabajar en las causas que originan las actitudes violentas, ya que "solo sanando y fortaleciendo las raíces es posible sanar todo el árbol y mejorar los frutos".Indicó que hacen faltan modelos cercanos que atraigan y muevan a los niños con su ejemplo, hacia una vida sana y constructiva. “Los niños y los adolescentes se refugian en juegos electrónicos o en el internet con sus riesgos y peligros, o son víctimas de una violencia en casa que solo los daña psicológicamente”, expresó.Tras pedir que se generen políticas de prevención, Mons. Protección solar ¿Sabes qué índice necesitas?Hoy más que nunca, exponerse al sol es decididamente peligroso. Consigue un bonito tono de piel siguiendo los consejos de los especialistas...El factor de protección solar (FPS) indica cuánto tiempo puede retrasar una crema el enrojecimiento de la piel. Por ejemplo, si tu piel se enrojece sin usar protector a los diez minutos de haberte expuesto al sol, al aplicarte un protector con FPS 20, tardará en enrojecerse veinte veces más, es decir, doscientos minutos. El FPS nunca debe ser menor de 15 y variará según el tipo de piel. Las pieles más claras que se enrojecen enseguida y se broncean con dificultad necesitan factores de protección más altos.Elige bien tu FPS50 PROTECCIÓN MUY ALTA: Piel muy clara que se enrojecesiempre, pero nunca se broncea.•50 / 30 PROTECCIÓN ALTA: Piel clara que se enrojece fácilmente, rara vez se broncea.•15 / 20 / 25 PROTECCIÓN MEDIA: Piel ligeramente morena. a veces se enrojece. Se broncea con facilidad.•15 PROTECCIÓN BAJA: Piel muy morena o negra. Se broncea, pero rara vez se enrojece.¿Cómo actúan los protectores solares?Las cremas y sprays con protección solar contienen sustancias químicas que, si son bien aplicadas sobre la piel, disminuyen los efectos dañinos del sol, pero no los evitan del todo. Algunas cremas se anuncian como de “pantalla total” o de “protección total”, pero aunque nos pongamos una crema con el mayor índice del mercado, siempre penetra una cierta dosis de radiación ultravioleta en la piel. Por eso, aun usando una crema de fotoprotección, debemos exponernos al sol con moderación.Las cremas hidratantes de día y los fondos de maquillaje que incluyen factor de protección solar son ideales para proteger la piel del sol todo el año, pero especialmente en primavera y verano.La mayor parte de las cremas de protección solar comienzan a actuar unos treinta minutos después de su aplicación, por eso hay que aplicarlas treinta minutos antes de la exposición solar.Es más eficaz renovar la aplicación de la crema de protección al menos cada dos horas que ponerse una única vez una crema de FPS muy alto y no volverla a renovar.La resistencia al agua varía mucho de unas marcas a otras, por lo que es muy importante repetir la aplicación después de bañarse o de haber sudado abundantemente. Por su mayor untuosidad, son más resistentes las específicas para niños, pero igualmente deben aplicarse tras los baños o cada dos horas.Tras analizar diversas marcas de crema solar, la Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU) asegura que “no hace falta gastarse un dineral para comprar una buena crema protectora”, puesto que hay buenas cremas con precios asequibles que se venden incluso en supermercados e hipermercados. ¿Hay que usar el mismo factor todos los días?Si bien con las condiciones climáticas actuales el FPS nunca debe ser inferior a 15, lo ideal es combinar diferentes factores de acuerdo a la zona del cuerpo. La piel del rostro y del escote es más sensible, por lo que precisa factores de protección más elevados, nunca menos de 30. En los labios hay que aplicar protectores solares en barra; los hay con diferentes factores de protección solar. En las zonas que se han “pelado”, el protector debe ser muy alto, porque la piel que queda expuesta es extremadamente sensible y el sol puede ocasionar en ellas lesiones muy severas.Las personas con piel menos sensible al sol deben utilizar igualmente un FPS alto los primeros días, si bien, a medida que se van acostumbrando al sol, podrían usar una crema con menos protección, pero nunca menor de 15.

Alcohol en exceso: Así daña tu corazónTómatelo en serio: abusar de las bebidas alcohólicas supone riesgos importantes para tu salud cardiovascular.Todos sabemos que el consumo abusivo de bebidas alcohólicas es perjudicial para la salud, y especialmente para el corazón. Pero, ¿qué quiere decir “perjudicial? ¿Somos realmente conscientes de cómo puede dañar nuestro sistema cardiovascular beber más alcohol del que nuestro organismo puede tolerar, incluso aunque lo hagamos solo en ocasiones puntuales?Hipertensión arterialLos resultados de distintos estudios clínicos han determinado que el consumo de alcohol en exceso es uno de los principales factores de riesgo de hipertensión. Esta enfermedad de alta prevalencia contribuye a muchas muertes prematuras, puesto que interviene con frecuencia en el desarrollo de enfermedades coronarias, de la insuficiencia renal y de los accidentes cerebrovasculares, como los ictus.Además, en las personas que ya padecen hipertensión arterial, el consumo de alcohol puede interferir en la acción de los medicamentos que toman para controlarla.Efecto tóxicoEl consumo excesivo de alcohol tiene un efecto tóxico sobre las células del músculo cardíaco, haciendo que este se dilate, por lo que se debilita y deja de ser capaz de bombear la cantidad necesaria de sangre. Esto se denomina miocardiopatía dilatada alcohólica, enfermedad que puede llegar a provocar insuficiencia cardíaca en los casos más graves. Parte fundamental del tratamiento en estos casos es la abstención absoluta de beber alcohol.Arritmias cardíacasLa arritmia que más se asocia con el consumo de alcohol es la fibrilación auricular. Algunos estudios indican que en personas que ya padecen este tipo de arritmia, incluso una ingesta ligera o moderada de alcohol puede aumentar de forma considerable el riesgo de padecer episodios recurrentes.Síndrome metabólicoUn consumo abusivo de bebidas alcohólicas puede provocar elevación de los triglicéridos por encima de los niveles aceptables (hipertrigliceridemia), que generalmente está asociada a niveles de colesterol “bueno” (HDL) más bajos de lo conveniente y a la acumulación de grasa en la zona abdominal. Este tipo de obesidad, llamada “visceral” por estar peligrosamente próxima a órganos tan importantes como el hígado, el páncreas o el estómago, es común a la mayor parte de las personas que acostumbran a consumir cantidades elevadas de alcohol, puesto que su aporte calórico es considerable: cada gramo de alcohol proporciona siete calorías, casi las mismas que las grasas. Estos factores pueden contribuir al desarrollo de diabetes. Un reciente estudio español publicado en la revista Medicina clínica revelaba que las mujeres multiplican por cinco veces sus posibilidades de ser obesas debido a un consumo elevado de alcohol en comparación con los hombres. También se detectó que ellas son más propensas que ellos a desarrollar miocardiopatía alcohólica y presentan mayor pérdida neuronal con menor consumo y durante menos años.

To develop professionally, individuals must promote and “sell” themselves. Resumes are generally the first point of entry into an organization or company. For this reason, a considerable amount of detail and care should be taken when developing your resume. One of the biggest mistakes people make is either including too much information or being too vague. It is not necessary, or advisable, to include every responsibility or task ever completed in a position. Rather, resumes should include highlights, accomplishments and knowledge areas. On the other hand, general statements and summaries will not suffice. It is important to be specific, wise and strategic; include names, numbers, and details while keeping in mind the limited amount of space to capture skills and promote oneself. Depending on the industry or position, resumes can be constructed in different formats. It is also important to constantly update your resume regardless of whether or not an individual is job searching. Regularly updating your resume will save the time and effort of remembering what tasks and projects were done in the past. It can also serve as a tool to evaluate individual progress and professional goals. This suggestion may be obvious but is absolutely necessary: proofread, proofread and proofread some more. Ensure that there are no grammatical or spelling errors, that line spacing and font size and type are consistent throughout the document. For clarity and organization, these elements should be consistent. Errors on resumes are a huge red flag to potential employer and can suggest lack of interest or care. Medicare went into effect 48 years ago on July 1, 1966. Earlier that same year, Medicare workers went door to door trying to get seniors to sign up. Medicare was not the cornerstone then that it is today and people did not know whether it was going to work for the long haul.Now, nearly half a century later, Medicare remains one of the most popular government programs in the nation. We can’t see the future, but one thing’s for sure: Medicare is here to stay. Medicare provides health insurance to more than 50 million Americans. Forty-two million are people age 65 and older and the other 8 million are younger and have disabilities.Most people first become eligible for Medicare at age 65. The four parts of Medicare are parts A, B, C, and D. • Part A (Hospital Insurance) helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing care, hospice care, and home health care. Most people get Medicare Part A premium-free since it is earned by working and paying Social Security taxes.• Part B (Medical Insurance) helps cover services from doctors and other outpatient health care providers, outpatient care, home health care, durable medical equipment, and some preventive services. Danny García "vuelve" a ganar Un panel de jueces del CMB ratificó su controversial triunfo sobre Mauricio Herrera Luego de expresar suspicacias al respecto, el nuevo presidente del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo (CMB) respaldó la controversial decisión del jurado oficial en la pelea entre Danny García y Mauricio Herrera el pasado 15 de abril en Bayamón.García, de ascendencia boricua y campeón simultáneo del CMB y de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo (AMB), venció al mexicoamericano Herrera por voto mayoritario: 116-112, 116-112 y 114-114. Fue una decisión muy criticada por la prensa y el público.Esa misma noche, a través de su cuenta de Twitter (@wbcmoro) y sin haber visto la transmisión televisiva del combate, Mauricio Sulaimán expresó preocupación con la votación de sus oficiales e indicó que investigaría lo sucedido en el coliseo Rubén Rodríguez.Ayer, el jefe cemebeísta explicó que: “Hicimos una revisión del video. Se hizo un panel. Se analizó. Jueces mexicanos fueron a la oficina (del CMB) y revisaron la grabación. También seis oficiales del mundo que revisaron la decisión, el reporte de los jueces, el informe del supervisor. Y se hace -no una investigación- un estudio”.¿El resultado de la pesquisa? “Se determinó que fue una pelea cerrada, una pelea muy buena. Editorial/Letters¿Que Hacemos Con Los Niños?La crisis creada por miles de niños centroamericanos cruzando solos la frontera de México a Estados Unidos nos ha tomado a todos por sorpresa.Nadie parece saber qué hacer con ellos. Pero lo primero, lo más importante, es cuidarlos, tratarlos como niños y dejar a un lado la politiquería.Las cifras son alarmantes. El año pasado fueron detenidos tras cruzar la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos unos 24 mil niños provenientes, sobre todo, de El Salvador, Honduras y Guatemala. Este año el gobierno de Obama calcula que serán más de 90 mil. ¿Por qué tantos?Estos niños son, en realidad, refugiados. Huyen de la pobreza, de las pandillas y del crimen. Tegucigalpa, por ejemplo, es una de las ciudades con más asesinatos per capita en el mundo. Eso los expulsa de su país. Pero no podemos olvidar, tampoco, que estos niños viven como huérfanos cuando, en realidad, no lo son. Están encargados con uno de los dos padres, con abuelos o familiares mientras papá y/o mamá prueban suerte en el norte. Y a la primera oportunidad, mandan por ellos o se van a querer ir solos.Este es el caso de José Andrés, de 15 años, quien estaba encargado con sus abuelos en Honduras, luego que su madre -y único sostén- se fue a vivir a Miami hace un año. “Si usted no me ayuda”, le dijo a su mamá Marlen Mena por teléfono, “yo me voy a Estados Unidos con unos amigos.” Y se fué.Conocí a Marlen, desesperada, luego de casi dos semanas sin saber de su hijo. Llegó a la entrevista que le hice por televisión con una foto de José Andrés. La acariciaba como si fuera su hijo. “Yo como madre le dije a mi hijo que no quería que pasara por lo mismo que otros niños están pasando.” Pero no le hizo caso. Marlen, su hijo José Andrés y miles de familias centroamericanas saben algo que la Casa Blanca no quiere reconocer públicamente. “Esto es lo que se habla en centroamérica”, me confió Marlen, “que a los niños, a los menores de edad, no los deportan.” Es cierto.Estados Unidos no deporta niños. Esa es la política extraoficial del presidente Barack Obama y de varios gobiernos que le precedieron. No está escrita en ningún lado pero los centroamericanos la dan por cierta. Por eso, en parte, ahora están llegando tantos niños.El fracaso de las negociaciones para una reforma migratoria aceleró la urgencia de los inmigrantes centroamericanos para traer a sus niños a Estados Unidos, antes que la frontera se ponga más dura. Eso y el buen trato que el presidente ha dado a los Dreamers.Esta crisis de los niños es una desafortunada consecuencia de las políticas migratorias del presidente Obama. Primero, al concentrar sus deportaciones en “criminales” quedó claro que no va a deportar niños o adolescentes. Segundo, al otorgar la protección de “acción diferida” (o DACA) a más de medio millón de Dreamers -o estudiantes indocumentados- queda la esperanza que seguirá tratando con la misma generosidad a menores de edad recién llegados. Y tercero, la realidad es que la mayoría de los 24 mil niños que fueron detenidos el año pasado no han sido deportados y, seguramente, tampoco serán deportados los 90 mil de este 2014. ¿Quién se va a atrever a separarlos, otra vez, de sus padres?La única opción es lidiar con estos niños como si se tratara de una crisis humanitaria. Es el equivalente a la crisis del Mariel cuando llegaron en 1980 mas de 125 mil cubanos por mar. Ahora estos pequeños refugiados vienen a pie.De hecho, es una nueva política de “piés secos, piés mojados” para niños centroamericanos. El menor que toca territorio de Estados Unidos casi seguro se queda, aunque lo pongan en un proceso de deportación. Por eso los niños ni siquiera se esconden. Cruzan la frontera y se entregan a los agentes de la Patrulla Fronteriza. ¿Qué juez va a enviar solo a un niño a San Salvador, Guatemala, Managua o San Pedro Sula si sus papás ya están en Estados Unidos?Al final de cuentas hay que tratar a niños como niños: con compasión, con cuidado, sin meter la política. No podemos olvidar que estamos lidiando con niños hambrientos, perseguidos por la violencia, que acaban de culminar el recorrido más peligroso y traumático de su vida, y que lo único que quieren es estar con sus papás. Es decir, hay que tratar a estos niños como si fueran nuestros propios hijos.Posdata. Marlen me avisó que ya pudo localizar a su niño, José Andrés. Cruzó México con un tío. División de IrakIrak está nuevamente en el centro de la problemática mundial. Durante el régimen de Saddam Hussein, el problema fue en torno al autoritarismo de su régimen militar, el dominio de una minoría religiosa islamista suní y una ambición inusitada de convertir a su país en el poder dominante del Medio Oriente.Paradójicamente, la dictadura de Hussein permitió un equilibrio de los diversos grupos étnicos y nacionales en Irakpor más de 20 años, aunque para ello tuvo que recurrir a la represión, la tortura y otras formas condenables por la comunidad internacional. En su momento, Hussein aplacó a los grupos disidentes de chiitas y kurdos con la utilización de armas químicas.La invasión por una coalición de fuerzas militares liderada por los norteamericanos en 2003 propició el desmantelamiento del aparato autoritario iraquí y la eventual captura y condena a la ahorca de Hussein. La invasión también rompió el balance social existente en Irak y permitió que las mayorías chiitas, quienes habían sido reprimidas por Hussein, dominen el nuevo entorno de la sociedad iraquí.En otras palabras, hubo una reversión de poderes. Los que estaban arriba, ahora están abajo y viceversa. El nuevo líder de Irak, el Primer Ministro Nouri al-Maliki, no ha podido integrar a las minorías religiosas sunitas en su gobierno, ni tampoco pudo frenar los sentimientos secesionistas de los kurdos, quienes crearon un enclave político y territorial en la zona norte de Irak.Es este sentido, el nuevo movimiento del Estado Islámico de Irak y el Levante (EIIL) es producto de la debilidad del gobierno de al-Maliki. Este grupo radical yihadista tiene como objetivo derribar el actual gobierno chiita de Irak, también destronar la dictadura siria de Bashar al-Assad y crear un califato unido en territorio de ambos países.El EIIL es un proyecto osado y, por qué no, imaginativo. A pesar de las victorias logradas en el noroeste de Iraq y el oriente de Siria, todavía no tiene la capacidad de derrocar al gobierno de al-Maliki y/o de al-Assad.Sin embargo, la incidencia del EIIL es más pronunciada en la homogeneidad de la sociedad iraquí. La etnia-nacional kurda, cuya población en Irak sobrepasa los 4 millones, está presta a utilizar la falta de gobernabilidad como un artificio político

para legitimar su independencia. La insurgencia yihadista del EIIL ha aumentado los sentimientos secesionistas en las poblaciones kurdas y ha dotado a sus líderes de mayores elementos políticos para establecer un nuevo Estado de Kurdistán. El gobierno norteamericano, a través de su secretario de estado John Kerry, expresó que no está de acuerdo en la división territorial de Irak. Mientras no exista un apoyo militar real, de soldados norteamericanos en el campo de batalla, las palabras de Kerry solo se pierden en el aire.La realidad en Irak es bastante delicada. “No Hagas Cosas Estupidas”La guerra, muchas veces, es un estupidez.Particularmente cuando ninguno de los dos lados puede ganar militarmente. Este es el caso de Colombia. Ni el ejército ni las guerrillas terroristas de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) pueden derrotar al enemigo a balazos. Así ha sido por medio siglo. Pero siguen peleando.Es falso e ilusorio decir que la guerra se puede ganar en Colombia. La única manera de conseguir la paz es hablando. No hay más. Aunque duela, aunque haya que negociar con quien mató a tu hermano. El fin de la guerra siempre hay que negociarlo con el enemigo. Las elecciones de este domingo 15 de junio son, en gran medida, un plebiscito sobre la guerra. Más de 220 mil colombianos han muertos en este conflicto bélico, en su mayoría civiles, según el Centro Nacional de Memoria Histórica. El presidente, Juan Manuel Santos, busca la reelección apostando a que las pláticas de paz con los líderes de las FARC en Cuba pueden culminar exitosamente. Oscar Ivan Zuluaga, el candidato uribista, dijo que realizaría una “suspensión provisional de los diálogos de la Habana” y solo los reanudaría bajo estrictas condiciones. Son, sin duda, dos visiones muy distintas de cómo enfrentar este conflicto. Solo le corresponde a los colombianos escoger su futuro pero, gane quien gane, ojalá escuche el reciente consejo del presidente norteamericano, Barack Obama, respecto a la guerra: “no hagas cosas estúpidas.”Obama ha estado bajo enorme presión para enviar soldados norteamericanos al conflicto en Siria e, incluso, a Ucrania (tras la anexión rusa de Crimea). Pero se ha resistido. De acuerdo con el diario The New York Times, el presidente ha usado esta frase –“no hagas cosas estúpidas”- en sus reuniones privadas y con sus principales asesores al definir su filosofía sobre la guerra. Obama cree –basado en su idea de diplomacia desmilitarizada- que enviar soldados de Estados Unidos no resolvería la guerra civil en Siria ni podría defender, tampoco, la soberanía de Ucrania. Está muy claro que Obama no quieren cometer los mismos errores del ex presidente George W. Bush, quien comenzó una guerra en Irak bajo la falsa impresión de que ahí había armas de destrucción masiva. Más de 188 mil civiles y combatientes han muerto en Irak, de acuerdo con el sitio IraqBodyCount.com . Muchas veces lo más inteligente es no hacer la guerra. “Algunos de nuestros errores más costosos”, dijo recientemente Obama en un discurso en la escuela militar de West Point, “han venido por nuestro deseo de apresurarnos en aventuras militares sin haber pensado totalmente las consecuencias.”Esto se puede aplicar perfectamente a Colombia. La guerra es lo normal en Colombia y lo más fácil sería continuarla 10, 15, 50 años más. Todos los niños y la mayoría de los adultos colombianos no han tenido un solo día de paz desde que nacieron. Eso puede cambiar. La paz requiere más valentía e inteligencia que la guerra. “Toda guerra termina con una negociación”, me dijo en una entrevista el corresponsal SebastianJunger, quien se ha pasado la mitad de su vida en zonas de conflicto. Tiene razón. El científico Albert Einstein se preguntaba en una carta en 1932 lo siguiente: “¿Hay una manera de liberar a los seres humanos de la fatalidad de la guerra?” Apliquemos hoy la misma pregunta a Colombia: ¿Hay una manera de liberar a los colombianos de la fatalidad de la guerra?La respuesta es sí. Desde luego. Pero la primera condición es “no hacer cosas estúpidas”, como sugiere Obama. Y lo estúpido sería creer que la paz se consigue con más guerra. Por Jorge Ramos Avalos.
