You’ve got this!O We have been studying IB History Route 2: This is our 20th

Century History paper.

This paper is 90 minutes long: you must answer 2 questions which gives you 45 minutes (one class period) for each essay.

O We only need two topics: We could potentially answer a question from four different topics.

O Topic 1: Causes, Practices and Effects of WarO Topic 2: Democratic States- Challenges and ResponsesO Topic 3: The Rise of Single Party States (dictatorships)O Topic 5: Cold War

What resources should you have?The studying should already begin.

You should have big binders and files of history notes: you will not learn these just by reading them.

To prepare for the exams, you need to condense your notes into a manageable size

Revision and summarization of key events/ideas will help you learn and organize the data into useable work.

How: Do the work– there are no shortcuts

O Work with a study buddy and use mark schemes to mark each other’s essays.

You must take the time to plan:

O Read the questions carefully during the 5 minute reading time.

O Choose questions you have studied: be smart!O Look at Section 1 first: 20th Century WarO Look at Section 5 next: Cold WarO Then look in Sections 2 and 3 if you have to…O DO NOT TACKLE Section 4 unless you have

EXPERT knowledge… (no offense but you probably don’t.)

O READ ALL of the Questions in the section before you make your selection. Sometimes there is an easier question.

A few minutes in the beginning could save you a lot later.

O Write a brief outline (or at least key words) to help keep your essay organized and on topic.

O Watch your timing: a major mistake is to spend so much time on one essay that you don’t have time to fully develop the second essay. They are equally weighted.

O Write legibly-- Make it as easy on your moderator as possible

O Number your answers/essays clearly on the answer book and on the cover sheet.

ATBQ!O Answer the bloody question!!

O (I borrowed this from a British teacher!)

O Whether its in your introduction or in the conclusion, ruthlessly focus on the demands of the question and give a direct, clear answer.

O No matter how amazing and knowledgeable your essay is, if you don’t answer the question, you will not mark high.

Make your essay dummy proof

O Not a narrative: Answer the question being asked – and all parts of the question! O Double CHECK This! O Repeat your thesis statement MANY TIMES!O Stay focused

O Need to support your answer with dates, facts etc O Signposting – using words from the question throughout the

essay

O Use transition sentences to show that you are honoring the command terms.

O Conversely, In contrast, Compared to, Therefore, Furthermore, etc.

Common Mistakes and how to avoid them.

Telling the story: O You need to link your information to the question – not write a

narrative

Writing general answers: O You must include detailed evidence to support your ideas

Spending too long on questions: O Timing is crucial in the exam O Don’t spend too long on one question – then not have enough

time to write the other/s

Missing the focus of a question: O Use the command and clarifying terms to identify the focus of

the question

Provide concrete details

O Discuss dates, events, historical people, etc.

O Don’t be wrong! If you can’t remember a specific date, put what you do know. A vague answer is still right… but a wrong answer is wrong!O For example: World War I began in 1914:

O June 28: AssassinationO July 28: Austria declares warO August 3: Germany declares war, etc.

O If you can’t remember the day, put the month, if you can’t remember the month, put the year… if you can’t remember the year… you should have studied or chosen a different question.

O This isn’t “English” so don’t worry about sounding redundant or not having “hooks” you are going to for maximum knowledge not artistry.

O Be clear and concise. You don’t want to ramble. There is no minimum word count so say what you mean and move on.

O Never ever give a hypothetical or “what if” response. This is history. We deal in what did happen, not what could have happened!

O (Think of all the pregnant women in the GD)

Your conclusion is criticalO This is the last thing your reader will see and

will leave the final impression. This is more important than the intro kinda

O Be strong.. Don’t fizzle…

OATBQ! AGAIN! O Answer the Bloody Question! Again! Refer

directly to the question: AGAIN! Just to make sure!

O Make any final thoughts, wrap ups, analysis. O Leave your paper on a strong final thought.

This is your last “kick in the head” to the fight you are engaged in. Make it HURT. :D

If you finish early: you probably missed something

O If you have a lot of time, add another supporting paragraph with another example to support your assertion. Yes it may be out of order, but if it isn’t there then you can’t earn points.
