Word of the week

Challenge Ladder Competition in Languages

The MFL department have been challenging students to broaden their understanding of language and culture outside the classroom. As part of their weekly homework, students explore ‘Words of the Week’ by completing a series of challenges, which increase in difficulty as they ‘climb the challenge ladder’! Each week we celebrate the students who have produced the best challenge project. Well done to last week’s Challenge Ladder Champions for their fantastic effort! Keep up the hard work!

Year 7’s rugby tournament at the home of Saracens

On Thursday 16th March, the Year 7 Rugby Team took part in their second tournament at the Allianz Park. On this occasion they went head to head with Walthamstow Academy, Finchley Catholic High School and Southgate High School. There were a few fresh faces in the squad this time round; Baran, Aidan, Josh and Israr forcing their way into the team.

The Team started with a victory against Walthamstow Academy. Tries from Aidan and strong tackles made by Khizar and Josh encouraged a solid defensive performance from the outset. Next up was FCH, who taught our team a lesson in attacking rugby as they beat our boys 7 tries to 1. However the Team still gave it their all in the final game drawing 2 - 2 to Southgate High School. Both sides put in exceptional defensive performances only allowing the odd attacker through to score. All in all a great day out for the CCF Year 7 boys. Well done!

Year 7 win Barnet Basketball League!

The Year 7 Basketball team won the Barnet League, beating local rivals Bishop Douglass 35-16 in an ex-citing final. The Year 7 team made a great start to the game, and were 19-8 up after the first quarter, with Bishop Douglass struggling to cope with their fast break offence. The second and third quarters were much tighter, but the year 7s pulled away again in the fourth, scoring 4 baskets in a row to seal the game. The team were cheered on by the Senior team, creating a great atmosphere in the Sportshall. The team were well led by captain Michael Williamson with 9 points, backed up by both Kuell Weekes and Ernest Barnes with 8 points each. MVP went to Rio Folkes for an outstanding defensive display!

The Year 7 team face Bishop Douglass again this week, this time in the Barnet Cup Final, and will hope to complete an undefeated season.

Team: Michael Williamson, Carlos Ferreira, Rio Folkes, Kuell Weekes, Ernest Barnes, Tyrone Attoh, Damien Banseylla, Lemar Alcock, Yasin Harun, Dev Depala

Co-coaches: Rory Andresier (Y11), Rio Jor-dan (Y12)

MVP: Rio Folkes

Robocup National Competition 2017 On Saturday 18th March, 11 students from CCF took part in the ‘Robocup’ National competition held in Wirral, Liverpool. The robotics team consisted of students from years 7 to 13, who all supported each other throughout the year to help build their robots and be prepared for this National event. Winners from each of the categories of Rescue A, Rescue B, Dance and Football go through to the Worldwide Robocup competition, which this year will be held in Japan in July. The team split up into 4 sub-teams to compete in the main two competitions; ‘Rescue A – Line Tracking’ and ‘Rescue B – Maze’. Rescue A simulates an autonomous robot entering a hazardous environment to rescue a vic-tim and return them to a safe zone. Rescue B involves a setup of rooms where specific heat points have been randomly placed to simulate trapped humans in a building. Contestants’ robots must find, detect and indicate the location of the survivors. I am pleased to announce that Christos Panteli in Year 10 won the Rescue B category and Amir Ahmad Khosrav came second in the Rescue A category, so many congratulations to them both! It was also great to see the Robotics team all supporting each other and have the opportunity to see how the competition setup so hopefully they themselves may enter in future events. Many thanks to Mr Panteli who accompanied us on the trip and helped with the driving. Also huge credit to Da-vid Fry for all his organising and motivation of the team throughout the year. CCF year 11 students at the LSE CCF has had a long established link with the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Sci-ence. This has continued in recent weeks with Year 11 students attending Taster Days on the last two Wednesdays. The first was an introduction to LAW and previewed a programme the LSE runs called Pathways to Law - this is available to them in Christ's College's 6th form and would provide them with a mentor, regular sessions at the LSE as well as legal work experience at top London firms. Benn Chikopa in Year 13 has already benefited from this programme and is planning to do Law at a Russell group university when he leaves CCF's 6th form this summer. The second introduced another similar scheme the LSE delivers - Pathways to Finance. This Wednesday students interviewed lead fund managers from Deutsche Bank and had a lecture from a lead researcher from the LSE.

This all forms part of the school's commitment to preparing our students for applications to top institutions.

Seniors win Barnet Cup The Senior Basketball team won the Barnet cup for the second year in a row, beating Mill Hill 58-52 in a close and exciting final. CCF dominated the first half but could not finish, meaning we could not quite pull away from Mill Hill. The first half finished with CCF 25-19 up, but a disastrous third quarter meant the seniors went into the last quarter trailing 37-39. The team finally found their shooting form to pull away again in the fourth quarter and finish up 58-52 winners. The team were led by point guard Matthew Disu, who scored 25 points, and captain Gabe Grant adding 9 points, with Jordan Archer grabbing 12 rebounds and Shazard Edwards 8 rebounds.

The team will be hoping to complete a second 'double' in a row, when they again face Mill Hill in the League playoff finals next week.
