    WEEK OF:

    AUG 10 TO 14

Weekly Publication for Middle School Parents

    Friday BulletinInside this issue:

    Dear Middle School Parents,

We’d like to extend a very warm welcome to all parents as we start a new school

year at ISM. The Middle School years are an excing adventure and wherever

you and your child are in your journey, please remember that we are here to

    support you.

The MS Parent Bullen is our primary avenue of communicaon with parents. It

would be greatly appreciated if you could take the me to read this bullen so

you are up to date on Middle School news and events. If you have any ques-

ons or need claricaon, please feel free to contact the Middle School oce

(Ms. Susan and Ms. Krisne) and for Guidance, Ms. Grace.

As the new Middle School Principal, I’d like to take the opportunity to introduce

myself. My name is Rachel Harrington and I am originally from Manchester, Eng-

land. If I am honest, I can’t remember a me when I wasn’t teaching. My par-

ents love to share stories of me lining my teddy bears up and ‘’teaching” themwhen I was 3 years old. Apparently I also used to lure my older brother and sis-

ter into my bedroom to play with me where I made the autocrac decision that

we were playing school and I was the teacher. My siblings considered this to be

rather bossy of me, whereas my parents saw this as a sign that I was desned to

    be a teacher!

I secured my rst paid teaching job at the tender age of 14. My rst experience

was teaching tap and ballet to 20 three-year olds! I instantly fell in love with

teaching and decided that I wanted a career that would allow me to pursue my

passions for dance, teaching/learning and travel. I view my passions as a triple

helix that dene me and help bring meaning and joy to my life.

For the past 19 years I have lived in South America and have taught in three

dierent internaonal schools. I have taught all grade levels from grade 1 to

grade 7 and have held a wide array of leadership posions. ISM’S Middle School

    Administraon from Endico College, Boston.

I am very excited about the move to ISM and I look forward to meeng you

and your child/children over the next month.

As you may be aware, during the course of the holidays, Travis O’Neel, the

Grade 2 Program Leader and ESL teacher, had a fatal motorcycle accident in

Bangkok, Thailand. A dedicated professional, Travis had been pursuing

Graduate Studies in Educaonal Leadership in Bangkok, during his vaca-

ons. Travis was a loving husband and father, a dear friend, a teacher and

our colleague. Above all else, he was a wonderful human being. This is an

incredibly dicult me for the ISM community, as we seek to come to terms

    with this tragic loss.

Travis’ funeral was held in Bangkok earlier this month and a memorial service

was conducted in Minnesota on August 2nd. ISM faculty celebrated Travis’s

life on Monday, August 3rd when a memorial tree was placed in the Elemen-

tary playground. We will also be holding an open event for our wider com-

munity (parents, friends and students) on Monday, August 10th, commenc-

ing at 2:30 pm in the Lile Theater. This will be a chance, to celebrate Travis’

life and also provide an opportunity for parents to pay their own tributes. If

you would like to speak at this event, please contact the Elementary oce.

A memorial book has been placed in the Elementary Oce, and we extend

an open invitaon for parents and students to write short messages forTravis and his extended family. This book will then be passed onto his family

as a memory of how many lives he inuenced.

We appreciate that there are many students in Middle School who knew

Travis or who had him as a teacher when they were in Elementary

School. Talking about death and grief can be a challenging conversaon and

MS students typically have many quesons. Please note that a parent work-

shop is scheduled for Friday, August 14th from 7:45 am to 9:00 am in the

Lile Theater. In this session we will explore some of the issues associated

with grief and how to broach this subject with children. This session will be

facilitated by the Counseling Department and interested parents are wel-come to aend. In the meanme, if you have any quesons or your child is

struggling with this tragedy, please feel free to talk to Marc Saint Laurent,

Diana van de Merwe or Charloe Bliss.

    August 5th, 2015

    Dear Parents,

Greengs and welcome to the school year 2015/16 Interna-onal School Manila. I hope that these weeks of summer

vacaon have given you the opportunity to enjoy some

family me together. As I realized myself last year when my

son and daughter went o to university – children grow up

    far too quickly!

I want to take this opportunity to remind you of some of

the support services and campus procedures to ensure an

orderly and ecient school start. I hope you understand

that, in such a large community, it is essenal for us to es-

tablish certain agreements in order to make things easier

    for everyone.

School Oce hours: Monday – Friday, 7 am – 4 pm. Note

that the Cashier’s Oce will close at 3pm to allow for the

    daily bookkeeping.

    Uniform Shop

The details of our full range of uniform items, along with

prices, can be viewed on the ISM website and are available

for inspecon and purchase at the ISM Uniform Shop on the

Plaza Level. For those students needing to try items on or

requiring measurements for alteraons a ng room will

be in operaon in the Fine Arts Theatre changing room1123 unl September 4th. The Uniform Shop hours of oper-

    aon are detailed below:

Extended days from July 20 to September 4

Monday – Friday, 7 am to 4 pm

Regular hours start the week of September 7

Tuesdays and Fridays, 7 am to 4 pm

    Smartcards (IDs)

All students will be provided with a Smartcard ID which con-

tains a smart chip. This ID can be loaded with cash through

the on-site kiosks located in front of the canteen and near

the ATM, online or at the main cashier located in the Busi-

ness Oce. Guidelines for loading are online at

    www.ismanila.org under Student Services.

The smart cards can be used for making purchases in the

Canteen, Bearcat Den, copy and print in the library, pur-

chasing ckets for school performances and for accessing

MS/HS lockers, therefore it is important that students carrytheir IDs at all mes.

Parents may obtain a Smartcard ID through the Security

Oce at a charge of Php 250.00.

    Canteen

Parents can sign up for prepaid meals for Elementary School

children. The Urban Chef (Internaonal Cuisine) and Yogi

Chef (Internaonal Vegetarian Cuisine) oces have been

moved to the ES Canteen, please proceed to their oces

for sign-ups. Cost for lunch is Php150.00. You may refer to

the ISM website for addional informaon on the canteen

    concessionaires and services.

We encourage all MS/HS students to use their ID cards for

payments in the canteen. This will allow parents to monitor

student purchases through the Campuscard website, and it

will also speed up lines in the canteen during peak mes.

    Bearcat Den

We invite you to visit the Bearcat Den where you will nd

school souvenir items and clothing. The Den will be open

    from Monday- Friday from 7am

    - 4pm. The Den will accept

cash and smartcard ID (debit card) as modes of payment.

    We apologize but the Den does not process tax exempons;

all those eligible must process documents through the BIR

    on their own.

    Bus Service

In an eort to make the use of our bus service an aracve

opon for student travel, we have, over the years, worked

with our service providers to keep the fees down to a com-

peve rate. For the last two years, T-Shule Services, Inc.

was able to hold the bus prices at the 2012/13 level. This

year, however, due to the increase in operang costs, the

upgrading of vehicles and the deployment of addional

buses an adjustment to the fees has been made. Following

discussions with T Shule Services, the school bus fees for

SY 2015/16 have been set at 10% for those paying on a

quarterly basis. For those who choose to pay by semester

or annually there is a discounted rate that reduces the in-

crease to 8.9% and 7.8% respecvely.

  • 8/20/2019 Parent Bulletin Issue 1 SY1516

    4/11

Details of the bus fees are available on the ISM website and

    from the Transportaon Oce.

As a further enhancement to the school bus service we are

introducing a new Bus Management System know as

“busRun”. This system has been specically developed by

the supplier to address the needs of ISM and ulizes Ipad

tablets to monitor students’ use of the school bus service.

This is a safe and secure system that allows the school sta

and our transport operator to track the pick-up and drop-

o of each student and the movement of our buses whilst

in transit. Once the system is fully operaonal it is ancipat-

ed that it will make a signicant contribuon to the ecien-

cy of the bus service, and further enhance the security of

our student bus riders. The deployment of our School Mar-

shals on all regular bus routes will connue.

During our discussions with T Shule Services we stressed

the importance of making the bus service an aracve op-

on for travel between home and school for as many stu-

dents as possible. Over the past three years they have

demonstrated a willingness to explore ways in which they

can, within the constraints of running an ecient and prac-

cal service for the majority of riders, provide a viable

transport soluon for those who are interested in using the

    school bus service.

Of course, there will always be certain locaons or needs

that cannot be provided for, but if the oered bus service

does not at rst appear to address a parcular need, in re-

gard to locaon or roung, parents are encouraged to dis-

cuss this with the Transport Oce sta.

I urge all parents to consider making use of the ISM Bus

Service for their students. Should parents wish to discuss in

more detail the school busing arrangements for the new

school year, or they have any parcular concerns or needs

they can contact the ISM Transport Coordinator, Ms. Ruth

Estella, on 840-8541 or email Ruth at Estel-

    [email protected]

    Billing

Billing statements are available for online viewing on the

School website to facilitate access. A user ID and password

have already been provided to exisng parents and are

available for every new parent. Parents are advised to

maintain an up-to-date email address for billing informaon

and to view the online billing at least monthly for up to date

charges. Please read carefully the School Fees and Payment

Schedule on the web. As was the case last school year,

there will be no re-enrollment deposit. Instead, we expect

all deparng families to complete the WITHDRAWAL NOTI-

FICATION FORM on or before May 13, 2016. Failure to do so

will lead to a deducon of $1,000.00 from the Facilies Up-

    grade Deposit.

    Payments

Payments may be in cash, check or through wire transfer in

any of the BPI, HSBC, and Cibank branches. Please make

sure that the student ID number and the name of the stu-

dent for whom the payment is being made is indicated on

the deposit slip, check, or in the bank instrucon for wire

transfer to ensure proper recording, and provide a copy of

the validated deposit slip / conrmaon receipt to Treas-

ury Department. Take note of the corresponding bank

charges by each bank for wire transfers and over the coun-ter transacons. Contact Treasury Oce at 840-8506 if you

    have quesons.

    Operaons and Security

Access and parking within the campus are important securi-

ty and safety issues. For the well-being of all members of

the ISM community, those entering the school campus are

requested to take note of the informaon and procedures

    outlined below.

    Parent IDs

The parent IDs issued since SY 2013/14 (black) will connue

to be valid for the new school year. Standard parent cards

will be issued free of charge. Parents may, however, elect

to apply for a smartcard ID which will be usable with the

cashless payment system introduced into the school for SY

2013-14. There will be a fee of P250.00 for a smartcard.

Applicaons for parent IDs can be processed through the

    Security Oce

    Student IDs

All students will be issued with new ID cards at the begin-

ning of the new school year. The cards will be compable

with the cashless payment system. There will be no need

for returning students to visit the Security Oce as we will

be ulizing the photographs taken for the yearbooks.

    School Passes

School passes issued to parents’ employees and representa-

ves need to be replaced for this school year. As of August

31, 2015 the dark green bordered passes will be invalid.

The security oce is now accepng applicaons for new

school passes. These passes will not be compable with the

    cashless payment system.

Each family will be given two free school passes. Addional

school passes may be obtained aer paying a processing

fee of Php100.00 each to the Cashier’s Oce.

    Visitors’ Passes

All visitors must secure a pass from the guardhouse at Gate3. Before entry will be allowed, a telephone check will be

made with the relevant oce to conrm the visitor’s busi-

ness within the school. Visitors will need to surrender a

    photo-ID upon entry to campus.

    Car Sckers

The car sckers for school year 2015/2016 are available

    from the security oce.

Starng school year 2015-16 parents will no longer be re-

quired to submit copies of the registraon documents of

their vehicles. They will instead be asked to conrm

through the applicaon form that the vehicle has minimum

Third (3rd) Party Insurance, is legally registered and is fully

compliant for operaon on the roads under Philippine Laws.

For those vehicles not registered in a parent’s name a leer

of assignment will sll be needed.

Each ISM family will be issued one vehicle scker free of

charge. Any addional sckers will be issued following pay-

ment of P100 to the cashier’s oce.

In order to facilitate the easy recognion of authorized cars

at the gates, the sckers should be axed to the top rightcorner of the windshield. ISM sckers issued in previous

    years must be removed.

Vehicles not displaying a current car scker will not be al-

lowed regular access from September 1, 2015.

    Vehicular Access

During drop-o and pick-up mes, vehicles may enter the

campus through Gates 2 and 3. Those entering through

Gate 2 should proceed to the drop o area and, once the

student has alighted or boarded, they should exit via Gate

    1. Those vehicles entering through Gate 3 must turn into

the covered parking area and use the designated drop-o

areas. All vehicles must exit through Gate 1.

Please note that Gate 2 may only be used by those drivers

and passengers who have an ISM ID card and who are in a

vehicle displaying a valid ISM vehicle scker.

Alternavely, vehicles entering through Gate 3 may park in

the covered car park. The spaces reserved for parent-

driven cars should only be used by those vehicles which are

driven by parents themselves. Vehicles in which parents

are traveling, but which are driven by a driver, should not

use these spaces. Rather, they should park elsewhere in thecovered car park or make use of the outside spaces next to

    the power center.

Visitors to ISM must enter through Gate 3. There is an area

for short-stay visitor parking near Gate 1.

    The Pedestrian Gate

The pedestrian gate is located in the perimeter fence mid-

way between Gate 1 and Gate 2. There is a paved area be-

tween the road and the perimeter fence, allowing easy ac-

cess to the gate. The pedestrian gate is solely for the entry

of members of the ISM Community at the beginning of the

school day. It will only be open between 7:00 am and 7:45

am (8:00 am to 8:45 am on Wednesdays).

Due to parking restricons, and in the interests of security,

it will not be open in the aernoon for pick-ups. During the

me it is open, it will be under the supervision of members

    of the ISM Guard Force.

Drivers should stop adjacent to the paved area and stu-

dents should alight from the right side of their vehicle. The

driver should then move o, clearing the space for other

vehicles dropping o students. Under no circumstancesshould a student be dropped o from the middle lane. This

is dangerous as the student would need to walk in front of

another vehicle. Drivers are reminded that trac regula-

ons forbid parking on the roads around ISM. Therefore,

vehicles should only be stopping for the brief me it takes

for a student to alight. Drivers must not wait for anybody

    to return to the vehicle.

  • 8/20/2019 Parent Bulletin Issue 1 SY1516

    6/11

    Drop O/Pick Up Passes

For non-regular drivers without ISM idencaon who en-

tering school to drop o or collect visitors or members ofour community, but who do not intend to park within the

campus, a drop o pass will be issued. Our regular checks to

conrm the identy of a driver and their purpose for enter-

ing the campus will connue to be made, but we will not

retain a photo-ID in return for the issued pass. The use of

these new passes will avoid delays at the Gate 1 exit and

reduce trac congeson at busy mes.

    Vehicle Checks

The pracce of inspecng vehicles will connue. During o -

peak hours, all vehicles will be checked before they are al-lowed to enter the campus.

During peak hours (drop o and pick-up mes), all vehicles

without valid sckers and randomly selected vehicles with

sckers will be asked to undergo an examinaon.

Whether an examinaon is conducted or not, it is important

that the security sta at the gates are able to idenfy the

occupants of vehicles entering the campus; therefore IDs

must be clearly displayed. Vehicles with nted windows

must roll down windows to allow a clear view of the interior

    of the vehicle.

    Drivers, Helpers and Bodyguards

Drivers, helpers and bodyguards should not wait on campus

for students throughout the school day. Aer dropping o

students they should exit the school grounds and not return

earlier than 30 minutes before dismissal me. Those who

repeatedly fail to comply with the regulaon will have their

    access privilege suspended.

Only those vehicles carrying parents or other people with

business within the school will be allowed to return to the

campus before the scheduled pick-up me.

There are designated areas for unaccompanied drivers,

yayas, helpers and security escorts to wait for parents and

students. Unless specically authorized, they may not enter

any other area. In the interest of security, and to prevent

congeson at the pedestrian entrances to the covered park-

ing area, parents are requested to emphasize to their em-

ployees the importance of cooperang with the security

sta and remaining in the appropriate areas.

    Firearms

All members of the ISM community are reminded that it is

strictly forbidden for rearms to be brought onto the cam-

pus. This includes concealed weapons carried by body-

guards for close protecon. Any person arriving at the

school with a rearm should inform the gate guard, and

arrangements will be made for the weapon to be safely and

securely stored during the visitor’s stay.

    Security Sta Direcons

Our security team is endeavoring to make the school as safe

and secure an environment as possible for all members ofour community.

We ask that everybody cooperate with us in this important

task. In parcular, all those entering our campus are re-

quested to comply with any direcons given to them by

    members of our guard force.

If you are confused or unclear as to the purpose of such

instrucons, please seek claricaon from the security

oce. Please note that it is the parents’ responsibility to

    advise their sta accordingly.

Thank you for your cooperaon. We are looking forward to

another great year at Internaonal School Manila.

    Best wishes,

    DAVID TOZE

    Superintendent
