Information

Shelter in Place We have no indication that there is any particular threat to our school or any other school, but we feel

that it is important to respond to national advice by preparing thoroughly for events that could threaten the safety of our staff and students. Although such an event could be related to a terrorist event, it is also possible that events such as a gas leak or chemical escape could cause us to sound the bell. Shelter in place is a safety procedure that covers extreme hazards such as a smoke cloud, local chemical leak or an intruder on site.

Students will be given the following instructions during form next week: • In the unlikely event of hearing these bells during lessons, they must follow the instructions of

their class teacher and remain in the classroom. • If they are walking on a corridor during lesson time, they must enter the nearest classroom and

follow the instructions from the teacher. • In the very unlikely event of hearing these bells at break or lunch, they must quickly and calmly

enter the school and go to the next lesson on their timetable. They must then follow the instruction of their teacher.

A series of normal bells will signal shelter in place.

The bells will stop ringing when it is all clear.

HOPEWALK 2019: 10am on Sunday 20 October at Swinsty reservoir. HOPEWALK is a month of walks taking place across the UK in October in support of Papyrus – a national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide. Harrogate Grammar School would like to invite families from the wider community to participate in a HOPEWALK in memory of Dom Sowa who

Harrogate Grammar School sadly lost in 2017. HOPEWALK will take place on Sunday 20 October at 10am at Swinsty Reservoir. The route to be followed is indicated on the map, accessed through the link below, the starting point is in the car park at point 1.

https://www.yorkshirewater.com/sites/default/files/downloads/Swinsty.pdf This is not intended as a fundraising event, but an act of solidarity to continue to raise awareness as a school. Should families like to make a donation then please do so at:

Restart a Heart – Wednesday 16 October

As part of National “Restart a Heart Day” we will be hosting the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, who will be delivering CPR training to a selection of students from

Period 1 to Period 5. Ten classes across Year 7, 8 and 9 will be chosen to undertake the training.

Careers Fair – Thursday 28 November 2019, 7pm to 8:30pm

This will be our eighth annual Careers Fair and is open to students in Years 7 – 13 of Harrogate Grammar School together with their parents/carers. We typically have

around 80 employer/business stands attending the event and over 500 students and parents who have come each year. We aim to offer students the opportunity to explore a wide range of career paths and support them in their decision-making through individual advice and guidance.

Could you help? Just a couple of hours of your time could help our current students make informed decisions about their future, by encouraging them to seek out information regarding courses and career paths that interest them!

We have had a number of parents, local businesses and former HGS alumni who have enjoyed supporting this event in the past and it has been greatly appreciated by our students. If you feel you

are able to share your knowledge and expertise at the Careers Fair, either as an individual talking about your profession or by representing a business or company, then please contact: Mrs Hinkins Personal Development Coordinator and Careers Leader tel: (01423) 531127 – ext 241 or email: [email protected]

Big Picture Day – Thursday 17 October All students in Years 7-11 will have the opportunity to

participate in an exciting Big Picture Day on Thursday 17 October. Students will be off timetable working in their year groups to experience and take part in a range of activities planned to support their Big Picture personal development programme which encourages students to learn about and

discuss issues linked to personal wellbeing and healthy lifestyles, careers education and economic wellbeing, citizenship education and British values. The day is also designed to encourage students to reflect on our school values and develop their skills of respect, excellence, adventure, commitment and honesty (REACH). Information about the different activities planned for each year group is provided below and students will receive further information before the day from form tutors and via emails. We look forward to working with all students on Thursday 17 October and hope they enjoy their Big Picture Day. (Mrs Hinkins)

Year Information

7 An exciting introduction and exploration of Chinese language and culture

Students will get a chance to sample a variety of different Chinese-themed activities, varying from Chinese

cooking, where students can design and make their own spring rolls, to Chinese art (students will study the

work of contemporary artist Ai Wei Wei and produce a group installation), make their own personalised

chopsticks, mask-making and music, Wing Chun Kung Fu, and Mandarin Chinese lessons. The combination

should give them an excellent initial insight into a new, fascinating culture.

8 Science – Healthy Lifestyles

Students will be looking at the effects of smoking and drugs on the body and the effect of exercise. This

will be done through a mixture of practical and theory work.

9 Risky World Students will be learning all about an amazing charity, ShelterBox which helps in

transforming the lives of families robbed of shelter when disaster strikes.

Year 9 groups will have the opportunity to experience first-hand, the decisions and

dilemmas faced by charity workers and millions of families struggling to keep themselves

warm, dry and safe in the event of a natural disaster. A representative from ShelterBox will be on hand to let us know about how

HGS students in recent years have helped the charity and they will be challenged to make their own shelter, using materials that

they have earned. Waterproofs will be required, whatever the weather!!!

In addition, they will be feeding their thirst for adventure by participating in a climbing session at The Harrogate Climbing

centre. Instructors will show them the correct techniques used by the professionals in what promises to be an activity full of fun

and exercise.

10 Period 1 to 4 – Maths

Students will be given the opportunity to develop and improve their understanding of money and finances, giving

them greater knowledge and confidence on these matters. On the day, the students will be tackling the cost of living,

the different types of investment, probabilities and associated with gambling and taking risks.

Period 5 and 6 - English

Introduction to “Romeo and Juliet”, plus how to use GCSE Pod to support learning and revision.

Students need to bring their headphones and iPads.

11 Progression Opportunities and Future Careers In this session students will:

• Explore different progression opportunities and possible careers for the future • Have the opportunity to develop skills and competencies across a wide range of work settings

• Will be working in small groups participating in timed meetings with a range of employers from different job

sectors to “fact find” about their job, company and personal ambitions.

• Students are able to come in “business dress” on the day and information about this will be emailed to

students

Residential Trips for 2019-2020

The table below details an overview of the residential trips that usually take place at Harrogate Grammar

School. Hopefully this will help you to plan for this year and the forthcoming years should you wish your child to participate in any residential visits. However, please note that although some of these visits have run for many years, we cannot guarantee that they will definitely run in the future. The organisation of a visit is based on staff goodwill, and occasionally there may be some circumstances when a member of staff is unable to organise a particular trip.

In addition to these, we also have a range of non-residential day visits and competitions to support students’ learning.

Award-winning author, Ruth Eastham, was born in the north-west of England

and trained as a teacher in Cambridge.

She has since worked in more than a dozen different schools in the UK, New Zealand, Australia and Italy. Her debut

novel, The Memory Cage was shortlisted for the Waterstone's Children's Book Prize, and her other novels are The

Messenger Bird and The Jaguar Trials.

Ruth is visiting us on Monday

21st October

A young Viking warrior's body has lain undisturbed beneath Isdal glacier for centuries, his

hand grasping a golden arrowhead incised with runes. When Skuli and Jack disturb

the corpse, Jack experiences an immediate connection

through time with the young Viking - and feels the power

emanating from the

arrowhead.

Nathan didn't notice the two men in dark coats at first, but before he can raise the alarm

they have dragged his father away and bundled him into a

car. Nathan’s dad just has time to give Nathan some cryptic clues and a firm instruction:

'You've got to follow Lily's trail, Nat.'

Those seven words set Nathan off on a mission to solve the

clues.

Parent Bulletin Week Beginning: Monday 14 October 2019 Week A This week’s new arrivals…

New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson weaves a delicate tale of

murder and mystery in the first book of a striking new series, perfect for fans of

Agatha Christie and E. Lockhart.

Ellingham Academy is a famous private school in Vermont for the brightest

thinkers, inventors, and artists. It was founded by Albert Ellingham, an early

twentieth century tycoon, who wanted to make a wonderful place full of riddles,

twisting pathways, and gardens. "A place," he said, "where learning is a game.”

Shortly after the school opened, his wife and daughter were kidnapped. The only

real clue was a mocking riddle listing method of murder, signed with the frightening

pseudonym "Truly, Devious." It became one of the great unsolved crimes of

American history.

Wells and Wong return for another gripping tale of blackguardly behaviour at

Deepdean, where old allies have become foes and old certainties are in flux. As the

school prepares to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, there are sinister goings on in

the woods and a shocking new case to be solved.

The Secret Commonwealth: The Book of Dust Volume Two, intertwines the stories

of Lyra Silvertongue and Malcom Polstead as they face new and dangerous secrets.

Journeying far from Oxford’s spires across the globe, this is an adventure like no

other. A powerful story about the truths that underpin our world, the divisions that

lie between love and responsibility and what it truly means to grow up.
