What are Learning Communities?
Students and staff are grouped into Learning Communities based on multiple year level groupings. Students usually spend two years with a teacher to assist with continuity of learning and the ongoing development of strong supportive relationships between teachers, students, groups of students and parents.

At Nairne School we aim to provide clear and effective communications between the school and students, parents and guardians and the wider school community. It is our intention to make all communications timely, relevant, accurate, clear and concise, open and reciprocal. To this end, we have created a Communications Framework document, outlining in detail all the ways the school and its community interact.
Communication Framework Overview
Points of Contact – In person, phone, SMS and email
Online Resources – website, apps and online payments
Website: nairneps.sa.edu.au
Apps: Skoolbag (general targeted school information) Seesaw (student, parent and teacher communication and journals) Flexischools (online tuck ordering) For detailed setup steps, follow the guides at the back of this handbook.
Publications: Newsletters (whole school, preschool, class and special interest), Annual Reports, Year in Review, Policies and other communications.
The School Newsletter is published online & printed in week 1 (with Term Calendar), and online only* in weeks 3, 6 and 9 each term.
Our Communications Framework Document, available on our website, will be revised and updated this year as a part of our ongoing reviews. We always welcome your constructive feedback.

Assessment & Reporting
During the year there will be a combination of formal and informal reporting. All families will receive two written reports during the year and will be invited to attend Parent Conferences late in Term 1. We encourage parents to approach their child’s teacher at any stage during the year should they have any concerns or information to share.
Should you wish to receive multiple copies of your child’s/children’s reports, please contact the school.
Student Absences
The school follows procedures outlined in the Nairne School Attendance Policy. To comply with attendance requirements a telephone call, text or written explanation must be given to the school when your child is absent explaining the nature of the absence e.g. sickness, family reasons or other.
The school will notify parents and caregivers by SMS texts if students are absent from school without a reason. This occurs each day starting at approximately 10.15am.
If your child is going to be absent for a period of one week or more (e.g. on vacation or hospitalization) you will be required to complete an Application for Exemption Form (ED175). These forms are available from the front office.
Consent Forms, Enrolment Forms and Agreements
The enrolment pack contains an enrolment form and several forms which combine general parental consents required for the use of school facilities and participation in programs.
School Enrolment Form
General Consent Form
Image, Video, Voice – Publications (Online & Print) Consent
Onsite Swimming & Aquatic Consent
ICT & Cyber Safety Agreement Specific consent forms will be sent home for camps and external excursions (including end-of-year swimming) as required. We ask that you return forms in the timeframes requested to ensure smooth processing of details.
DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION

Updating Contact Numbers
Information needs to be kept up to date by parents in case of emergencies. If any of your details change, please contact the school as soon as possible.
In October of each year we send out copies of our contact details to families for checking. Forms should be returned to the office for processing.
Legal files - Custody Orders
A copy of custody orders and access arrangements must be kept with the Principal. For issues to do with custody, guardianship and parenting plans, please see the Principal so you understand your legal position.
Student Records
The school maintains Pupil Record Folder on each child that contains copies of reports, work samples, levels of achievement, etc. Under the “Information Privacy Principles” and “Access to Personal Records” Acts, parents or students may apply in writing to view any such records.
Student Enrolments & Transitions
Enrolling in Preschool
Children who turn 4 before May 1 are eligible to attend preschool that year. When your child turns 3 or earlier, to show your interest in using our preschool please complete a Preschool Enrolment Registration Form. Offers of enrolment will be sent out in May to those who have registered. This process is outlined fully in our specific Preschool Enrolment Pack. Families are welcome to tour the preschool and can make a booking by contacting the School or the Preschool directly.
DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION

Transition to Reception
Reception students commence school on the first Wednesday of the year. Starting school can be exhausting so please talk with your child’s teacher or a member of the leadership team if your child needs a shorter day or ‘rest’ day.
Children moving from our preschool are part of a transition process that operates throughout the year with extra classroom visits in Term 4.
Transferring Students
Nairne School welcomes new and transferring students throughout the year. Families wishing to move schools are invited to join a school tour and complete a pre-enrolment form with a member of the leadership team. We will work closely with families to ensure moving schools is a smooth process.
Transition from class to class
Moving classes within school can be a little stressful for some students. Many considerations and preferences (both academic and social) are considered. We work very hard to ensure children feel confident in their new class. This may involve special visits or meetings between teachers and families.

School Card Scheme
To be eligible for School Card you must have a Centrelink Customer Reference Number which will be shown on a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card listing all dependents. The primary cardholder’s Centrelink Customer Reference Number will be used to verify eligibility. For each family who is eligible for School Card, an application will need to be completed each year. Please note that no personal income details need to be provided other than verification that the combined gross family income falls within the appropriate levels. Preschool Fees or the Performance Levy are not covered by School Card.
Please see our Fees Package for information or visit sa.gov.au/education/schoolcard for the online application process.

Weather Policy
Our Preschool and R-7 classrooms have good quality heating and cooling. On days of extreme weather, if a member of leadership believes it is not safe or appropriate to be outside (eg, storm, high winds, heavy rain, excessive heat etc) students will have supervised play inside during break times. This is indicated by three quick bells in succession.
Buses
Students may be eligible to access a Harrogate (Kanmantoo) or Brukunga bus if Nairne is their closest school. Application forms are available from the Front Office and approval must be sought from Mount Barker High School. Mount Barker High School charge a $20.00 processing fee per student/per year for this service. Buses are also used for excursions. If this is to occur you will be required to complete a consent form. We always try to book buses with seatbelts.
Emergency Action Plan
Nairne School is in a category 2 Bushfire Zone. The school practices both building and bushfire evacuation regularly. The gym is our nominated Bushfire Shelter. This is NOT a community fire refuge.
Please ensure we have accurate contact details on our system as messages will be sent via text if the school is to close on a day rated as ‘catastrophic’.
Our BUSHFIRE ACTION PLAN is distributed to all families in Term 4 each year and is available from the front office and our website. Please keep this in a prominent position during the summer months as it details emergency contact numbers and the process we will go through should a bushfire impact our school. Families are encouraged to document their own Bushfire Survival Plan.

Bushfire Action Plan 2021
Nairne School (Preschool, R-Year 7, OSHC & Vacation Care)
Nairne School has been rated as a “high risk” site. It will be closed when Catastrophic (Code Red) bushfire weather conditions are forecast for the Mt Lofty Ranges. Schools to be closed will be listed on the TV and radio. We will contact all parents using our sms messaging system.
Please listen carefully to weather reports during the bushfire season. In the event of a bushfire in school hours students will be collected from the GYM. This is our Bushfire Shelter.
All schools now operate under the following guidelines:
Total Fire Ban Day On days of Total Fire Ban signs will be in each classroom to alert staff, students and parents of their roles on this day. Excursions may be cancelled. Offsite meetings may be cancelled. Parents may choose to keep their children home if this is part of the family Bushfire Action Plan. Children collected during the day MUST be signed out at the front desk.
Fire In Immediate Vicinity/Impacting On Site When any of the following occur:
CFS broadcasts indicate fire is moving toward Nairne
Local emergency services advise that a fire will impact on the school
Advice is received that a bushfire is burning in surrounding townships
Confirmed sighting of nearby smoke or flame
Staff and students will move to the GYM (Bushfire Refuge). Class roll books will be checked and students made comfortable. School personnel will liaise with
Emergency Services and prepare for the arrival and passage of the fire front. Parents or nominated emergency contacts may only collect their children if imminent fire danger has passed and if it is safe to do so. ALL children MUST be signed out at the GYM(Bushfire Refuge). Staff and students will remain in the gym until the situation has been assessed to be safe. Staff will begin to reunite families. Nominated staff members will remain on duty until all students have been collected.
CASTASTROPHIC FIRE DAYS / CODE RED A catastrophic (code red) day is when the Fire Danger Index reaches and or exceeds 100.
It is likely that the Mt Lofty Ranges could expect a few catastrophic days during each fire season. If a Catastrophic fire day is declared for the Mt Lofty Ranges, Nairne School, including the Preschool, OSHC and Vacation Care will be closed and buses will not run.

Mobile Phones
From a school perspective there should be no reason for students to bring mobile phones to school as they can make calls from the front office if necessary, and front office staff are able to pass on urgent messages to students when required. If it is necessary for a student to bring a mobile phone to school it must be handed to the class teacher at the beginning of the day and then collected at the end of the day. Students are not permitted to use their mobile devices on school grounds.
School Banking Days
School Banking will not be operating at Nairne School during 2021 due to reduced parent and student support.
Bicycles & Scooters
Bicycle and scooter racks are available for storage during the day. Bicycles and scooters are to be walked in the school grounds. Helmets must be used when riding or scooting. Racks are ‘out of bounds’ during school hours.
Toys, Cards & Collectables
Children are discouraged from bringing toys to school as they can be easily broken or lost and are also a distraction in class. Trading cards are not permitted as they can often be a cause of distraction and misunderstanding between students.
DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION

Feedback & Complaints
Nairne School has a Feedback & Complaints Policy, available on our website. We recognise that sometimes things go wrong and you may feel that your expectations are not being met. If you have a complaint or would like to provide feedback, we would like to hear from you. Please take the time to have a look at our policy, which expands upon the four-step process below. Most problems can be solved at steps 1 or 2 should you have any concerns.

Uniforms & Sunsafe Hat Policy
All students are actively encouraged to wear school uniform. School colours are navy and maroon. We offer a variety of school uniform items and we encourage parents to dress their children in uniform as it is practical and sunsafe. Suitable footwear is also encouraged. Shoes and sandals must be suitable for all school activities, including sport.
Uniform Shop
Uniforms are available from the front office at any time. We sell uniform items at cost price to ensure they are affordable. Bags, beanies, jackets and hair ties are also available. We have a wide range of options available and are constantly looking for new items to increase comfort and value for students and parents.
Sunsafe Hat Policy
We have a “No hat, stay in the shade” Sunsafe hat policy. All children need to wear wide-brim, bucket or Legionnaire type hats while outdoors during Terms 1 and 4. These are available in the school colours from the office. Children without a hat must stay in the undercover areas. Parents are encouraged to educate their children to use sunscreens before and during school. Hats and sunscreen must be sent on excursions.
Lost Property
A large plastic tub is located during school hours outside the Wellbeing corridor opposite the Front Office. If you have lost any items, please check here first. After two weeks if it is not labelled it will go into the lost property cupboard. At the end of each term, unclaimed items will be sold for $1.
Please ensure that you all children’s clothing and equipment so that they can easily be identified and returned.

Nairne School encourages safe and responsible road behaviour by both students, parents and caregivers and staff at all times. We understand that our location may not be ideal at peak periods, but if we all work together, modelling the virtues of patience and respect by following road rules and the school procedures outlined in this article, we can continue to experience a smooth and safe experience for all.
Speed limits
10 kph through the school grounds
25 kph between school signs on the main road
When driving and parking near the school please observe all parking and speed restriction signs and obey road rules in and around the school. Please be aware that council parking inspectors and police patrol our school roads regularly.
Kiss & Drop Zone
Our main pickup and drop off point is at the "D" on Saleyard Rd. Please see the detailed description later to remind yourself of our procedures both to protect our students and make the best of our limited road access.
Road & Parking Safety
DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION
Nairne School Parent Info Booklet | 2021 Page 26 of 44
Car Parks
The car park should be used if you are stopping and visiting the Preschool, school or classrooms only. The first section of the car park is designated as staff parking (as signed).
For the safety of everyone do not double park behind other cars or stop in obvious no parking areas. The car park is not to be used as a “Kiss & Drop” area as this aids to further traffic congestion and is unsafe.
Please only park in the proper line marked car spaces.
During school hours, the staff / all weather sports carpark and roadway (accessed via the boom gate beside the Preschool) is out of bounds for students.
Disabled Parking
Disabled parking spaces are located outside the Preschool and are for vehicles with a valid disabled parking permit which is clearly displayed. Please respect the needs of all members of our community.
Street Parking
Please show respect for our neighbouring residences by parking legally and maintaining their access.
Market Place Zone
The Market Place drop off area can be very busy also so please take care in this area. Please observe council signed parking restrictions and respect resident's access to properties.
Byethorne Park
Many people often use Bythorne Park, located on nearby Woodside Rd, as a parking and / or pickup location and walk to school. If students use this option, we ask that the pedestrian lights on Princes Highway are used.
DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION

Pickup & Drop off
From the Saleyard Road school entrance, the “D” shaped “Kiss & Drop” zone is the quickest and safest area to drop off and collect children.
Children should get in and out of vehicles through the left hand side door only and parents must not park and leave cars in the “Drop Off” zone during school pick up and drop off times.
Drop Off
Students exit vehicles anywhere along “Kiss & Drop” zone.
Students enter or exit their vehicle through the left hand side doors.
Walk to and from vehicles on the footpath at all times.
Never walk along driveway area.
Pickup
Students congregate as soon as school is dismissed at the “Kiss & Drop” area near the “big rock”, next to large seat or under veranda at the end of school building if it is raining.
Students actively watch for their pick up vehicle to enter “Kiss & Drop” zone and then proceed along footpath to the vehicle.
This is not a play time. Students are expected to wait in the one place and be ready to get into their car.
Students are not allowed to cross the driveway and wait for vehicles on the inside or central area of the “D”.
A staff member will be on duty to assist and help monitor both student and driver movement where possible. Please discuss these safety procedures with your children so that your whole family are fully aware of our systems. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our whole community safe.

To promote and support student wellbeing, Nairne School funds a Student Wellbeing & Inclusive Education Leader, during 2021 this role forms part of our new Assistant Principal role, who runs and coordinates all our student wellbeing programs.
Our Wellbeing programs include:
Virtues Project
Kimochis Program
Positive Mindset education.
Student Management
Nairne School focuses on learning in a co-operative, caring and non-punitive environment. Critical to the success of this environment is that teachers use professional judgements when interacting and responding to students. Our goal is to move students towards listening and responding appropriately, supporting each other and accepting responsibility for actions. We strive to develop relationships based on trust, respect, tolerance, co-operation and acceptance of difference. We have both formal and informal structures in place to support students when they are having difficulty meeting established codes of behaviour in the classroom or playground. We work together in a problem-solving framework, focusing on skilling students and developing support networks.

Inclusive Learning Strategy
Our Inclusive Learning Strategy has the goal to assist all students to learn, listen and act in a socially responsible manner to ensure wellbeing and safety. Along with our Student Behaviour Code (coming Term 1 2021), Bullying Prevention Handbook, and our Student Choices poster, it informs expectations, provides clear processes and helps students, parents and school staff to work together to make Nairne School a safe and enjoyable place for all.
Pastoral Care Worker
Nairne School has been a part of the National School Chaplaincy Program for many years. Michael Thornley is our Pastoral Care Worker this year and his role is to support the school in its aim to be a safe and supportive learning environment, by role modelling and mentoring, contributing to extra-curricular activities, Breakfast Club, engaging in the life of the school and community, and linking families to community resources and services.
Pastoral Care Workers do not promote nor discriminate on the grounds of any particular ideology, but work to enable a supportive, inclusive and caring learning environment within the school for all students.
For 1:1 or small group contact, individual consent will be sought from parents and guardians. More information about the role and activities of the Pastoral

Care Worker can be obtained by speaking to Michael or Assistant Principal Belinda Trowbridge at the school.
If for any reason you do not wish for your child to have any contact with the Pastoral Care Worker, please inform the school in writing.
Health
The provision of first aid and emergency management for students in the school environment is carried out on a daily basis by School Services Officers (SSOs).
Health Care Plans & Medications
If your child suffers from a condition that could require long term treatment at school, you must ensure that the preparation is marked with a pharmacy label. A Health Care Plan will need to be completed by a doctor. When medication is required on a short-term basis, e.g. a matter of days or weeks, then the SSOs may dispense medication for students relying upon directions typed on the bottle or packet by the pharmacy. All medication must be stored in the First Aid room and documented when administered.
Sickness
If your child has cold or flu symptoms (e.g. coughing, sneezing, fever), they should be kept home from school or preschool. If you child has been vomiting or has diarrhoea, medical advice suggests that they should not attend school or preschool for at least 24hrs after the last incident.
Infectious Diseases
If a child has contracted a disease such as mumps, measles, whooping cough, rubella, chicken pox, etc., parents should be guided by the doctor’s advice. Children suffering from common localised diseases such as school sores, ringworm, conjunctivitis, should be kept at home until sores have healed or discharge has ceased. If in doubt, please feel free to contact the school. In some cases the school will send a notification to the school community.

Accident and Ambulance Cover
In the event of a serious injury or medical emergency an ambulance will be called, along with notifying the student’s emergency contact.
If an assessment is made by ambulance officers that no immediate treatment is required, there will be no charge. If you are a member of SA Ambulance, there will be NO CHARGE if an ambulance is used for transport. If you are not a member, but have private health cover which includes ambulance cover, you will be billed and can claim it on your health cover.
Please understand that parents are liable for any costs. We encourage you to investigate subscribing for cover. In extenuating circumstances, there are special provisions for the Minister to approve payment associated ambulance costs.
Head Lice
When cases of head lice or ‘nits’ occur, the child or children involved should be kept at home until treatment has been carried out and a note is sent to all children in the class (anonymously stating that a child in the class has had a case of head lice and ask that parents inspect their child’s hair). Parents are requested to make every effort to remove all the dead eggs. This is effectively done using a ‘nit’ comb and conditioner. Various products are available for the treatment of lice, KP 24 being one of them. Varying treatments can help so that lice do not develop a resistance. It must be stressed that all members of the family should be treated at the same time, to prevent recurrence. Bed linen must be changed and blankets aired. Children may return to school after treatment. Please ensure that you inform the school.
Healthy Eating at School
Children learn, experience and grow best with a healthy and balanced diet. The school encourages parents and caregivers to provide this for each student – starting with breakfast before school. At school, students eat at recess and lunch times. Preschool, Early Years and many Lower Years Learning communities also have a “Brain Food” healthy snack time during the morning period. Please talk to your class teacher to confirm what routine is run in your child’s class.
Chewing Gum is not permitted at school. We also discourage children from bringing sweets to school.

Parent Groups
Playgroup
Playgroup is organised by a small group of dedicated parents. Please consider supporting or joining this team to make playgroup a happy and exciting place.
This year all families need to book to attend, as, due to COVID-19, we must comply with room capacity restrictions and don't want to turn people on the day. Bookings are usually done the week before via Facebook or phone details above.
Playgroup gives your child the opportunity to
play with other children
become more independent and confident
learn to share and take turns
experience and enjoy a variety of materials and activities
watch, do and listen.
Playgroup is also a place where parents
meet other adults
spend time interacting, talking and listening to their children, supporting each other, sharing ideas and concerns.

Volunteering Opportunities
Volunteering at school is a great opportunity to support and nurture children, both as a parent, a grandparent or a community member. There are many opportunities to make a difference as an adult volunteer throughout the school. A current DCSI Child Related Employment Screening or the new Working With Children Check (WWCC) from the Department for Human Services may be required – please enquire at the school or check at www.screening.sa.gov.au.
Learning Assistance Program (LAP)
The Learning Assistance Program (LAP) gives a student an opportunity to work with a supportive adult. The LAP has assisted many students and can allow them to gain confidence and develop essential skills. No prior experience is required – all you need is a desire to help and 30 minutes a week to spare. If you are interested in volunteering, talk to a member of the Leadership Team.
