Controversial Issues in the ClassroomTownship High School District 214’s primary mission is to enable all students to learn the skills, acquire the knowledge, and develop the behaviors necessary for them to reach their full potential as citizens who can meet the challenges of a changing society. In a democracy that openly confronts acute and pressing political, social, economic, and moral problems, it is likely that such issues will be evident in classrooms. NJROTC Summer Activities spur Husky Interest

Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) is a leadership program open to all D214 students, Leadership principles, personal development, and human behavior are included in the NJROTC curriculum, but it is during the hands-on experience gained in extracurricular activities and service where students realize what it means to be a leader. Incoming Husky freshman Ethan Maverick Nguyen, Sydni Linke, and Nathan Johnson attended the voluntary New Cadet Orientation where they could observe cadets putting the hands-on concept to the test. Over a period of three days, the freshman participated in cadet led activities including drill, classroom instruction, orienteering and firearms familiarization and safety. Freshman were also able to participate in a field trip to the Oshkosh Airshow, the Chicago Air and Water Airshow, community service for the Prospect fire victims, a visit to the Pritzker Museum in Chicago, and a visit USCG Station in Calumet and cruise aboard the naval training vessel Manatra. This year cadets have set a full schedule of learning opportunities including overnight field trips and extracurricular teams such as drill, academic, marksmanship, physical fitness, drone, and cyber teams. According to Cadet Commander Thomas Brautigam, “Leading is not just to command individuals but to have the integrity to make the right decision and to take the initiative to get things done.”

NJROTC is not a military recruiting program. It is a District 214 elective class taught by District employees and held at Wheeling High School. The program goals are to develop more informed and responsible citizens while helping students succeed in school, careers, or college. The citizenship, service, responsibility, and the accomplishment of cadets are part of a meaningful and relevant education that will prepare them to realize their full potential. JHHS students are bussed to Wheeling High School on Wednesday nights from from 4:30 to 8:30. Though the extra homework is minimal, cadets are eligible for a PE waiver in order to manage their study time. Interested students can sign-up for NJROTC with their counselor or contact the instructors at 847-718-7116 for more information.

NJROTC cadets sailed aboard the naval training ship Manatra to USCG Station Calumet.
