As an alumnus of the school and a former Captain of the school’s basketball team,

you have been asked by the Head of Department for Student Development to give

an address to a group of parents on the relevance of sports to their child’s

development.

Good morning, everyone! I am Alex, an alumnus of this school and the former Captain of

the basketball team. Currently, I am pursuing Sports Science and Management in

Nanyang Technological University of Singapore.

Growing up, I was an active child who couldn’t sit still for long! My parents saw that I had

boundless energy and enrolled me in Taekwondo classes at the age of five. While I

enjoy meeting new people and making new friends, kicking and punching into the air as

a novice student didn’t make any sense to me. Soon, the young and restless me got

bored and eventually, I stopped attending classes altogether.

In primary school, we got to play basketball during PE lessons. I love it! Of course,

dribbling the ball, running about on court and scoring points were exciting to me, but

more importantly, I was not playing by myself but with my classmates who were equally

excited about the game. I moved on to representing my school in basketball tournaments

when I was in secondary school; my teammates on court became my close buddies off

court while my coach became a mentor to me, even till this day.

Indeed, the sport has given me a lot. It not only trains me to be physically fit but it also

teaches the importance of dealing with my emotions on and off court.

Sample Paper (Spoken Interaction)

25

1. Would you enjoy taking part in a sport activity like the one in the

video? Why, or why not? [Personal]

2. What sort of problems might a lack of fitness bring to our daily

lives? [Personal]

3. ‘Values can be inculcated through all kinds of sports.’ Do you

agree with this statement? Why?

[Stating their opinon and persuasion]
