January 13th, 2019 - Baptism of the Lord
From Fr. Suresh
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading: Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 104:1b-2, 3-4, 24-25, 27-28, 29-30
Second Reading: Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7
Gospel: Luke 3:15-16, 21-22
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION “John said: One mightier than I is coming;
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” - Luke 3:16
THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD… WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
Think of what it's like to wait a long time. Can you imagine what it would be like to wait for centuries? No one person
lives that long, of course. But for the Israelites, they had heard the stories from generation to generation. They had been
conquered time and time again, and now "the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts
whether John might be the Christ." They had been waiting for a Messiah, one who did miraculous deeds and said pro-
found things; someone aglow with the glory of God. We all know what it's like to hope and be disappointed. But what
if your hopes were fulfilled?
That day at the Jordan River, an audience had gathered. Among the crowd for baptism was an unknown man. Perhaps
he was dirty from weeks in the desert. His hands had the calloused palms of a tradesman, a carpenter. He and John the
Baptist may have embraced with the familiarity of the cousins they were. This man wades into the Jordan for a good,
solid dunking. As he rises from the water, the One who breathed life into Adam gasps for air like any other man.
But then "heaven was opened." The clouds in the sky part miles above. "And the Holy Spirit descended upon him in
bodily form like a dove." An apparition with substance sails through the sky. It exudes gentleness and power all at
once. "And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.'" Can you imagine the
sight? For the crowd, there is no doubting what they have seen, who they have seen. Can you imagine this encounter
with our God who keeps His promises? What are you waiting for?

A New Parish
Bible Study “Wisdom is seeing with God’s eyes.”
– Pope Francis
Scripture and the Tradition of the Catholic Church provide an abundance of wisdom, though it can often be challenging
to apply it to our lives. To help you learn to gather and live with greater wisdom, St. Ignatius/Christ the Redeemer Parish
will begin “Wisdom: God’s Vision for Life” on Monday, February 4th, 2019, starting at 6:15 pm in Loyola Hall.
The Bible Study will last for 8 weeks and will be held every Monday evening in February and March.
The study is based on the Wisdom Books of the Bible, drawing on the wisdom literature of the Bible: Proverbs, Wisdom,
Sirach, and Ecclesiastes. Wisdom invites you to experience the transforming power of taking time to apply God’s
wisdom to your own life. You will learn to see with His vision. You will experience the peace of knowing God cares for
you, and you will see how God — and only God — can show you a path through any circumstance!
Participants of Wisdom will receive a journal and will meet every week to view an engaging video presentation followed
by a time of lively group discussion and fellowship. The eight 30-minute videos, presented by Jeff Cavins, will guide
you through a variety of themes drawn from the wisdom literature of Scripture. Jeff will explain Scripture’s wisdom on
decision-making, finances, relationships, peace of mind, and speaking to one another and will look at the beauty of
wisdom gained through age and at how Christ himself is the embodiment and fulfillment of all wisdom.
ALL Parishioners are invited to participate in the series, especially those who have completed the ALPHA Series over
the last two years. Make this your next step in being formed as disciples of Christ!
For more details or to register, contact O’Neil Miller at 949-6797 or e-mail [email protected]. You can also register at:

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING
THE ST. IGNATIUS FOOD PANTRY!
The Christian Service Commission launched the St. Ignatius Food Pantry during the Year of Mercy, on
Sunday, December 18th, 2016. This service to the needy is one of the corporal works of mercy.
We are encouraging ALL parishioners to be part of this great mercy initiative by donating food and other items so that
the Food Pantry can be fully stocked. The following items are regularly required and can be dropped off after Mass or at
the Church Office any time. Please ensure items are non-perishable and have plenty of time left on the sell by date!

PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
ST. IGNATIUS/DOROTHY RICE SCHOLARSHIP FUND —
NOW IN OUR 22ND YEAR ASSISTING FAMILIES WITH SCHOOL TUITION!
The St. Ignatius/Dorothy Rice Memorial Scholarship Fund assists families who are not able to
afford the full tuition at St. Ignatius School (which averages about $9500 per year). Each year
we help to keep children in our school who otherwise couldn’t afford a Catholic Education.
Over the past 21 years we have assisted nearly 180 children from over 120 families!
The average child in this programme receives about $200-$300 per month off the fees, paid by
the scholarship fund (directly to the school bursar), while the child’s family pays the rest.
In return for the help, the families actively contribute to the school and parish in a variety of ways (helping out with
fundraisers, chaperoning school trips, cleaning the grounds, assisting at sports days, serving on committees, etc.).
How you can help:
Donation envelopes are available at the front entrance of St. Ignatius Church or in the church office. Donations can
be dropped in the collection, sent in by mail or dropped off at the church office. If paying by cheque, please make
your donations payable to: ST. IGNATIUS, and in the memo, please indicate “Scholarship Fund”.
On-line transfers can be done through Butterfield Bank… contact May in the parish office for details.
Perhaps your company would like to assist with regular contributions OR a one-off donation?
Please consider the Scholarship Fund from time to time when doing your charitable work throughout the year!
Many thanks to all those who have contributed to the fund during recent months and during the past several years!
For further information, please contact Jeremy Rice in the Parish Office or via e-mail: [email protected].
