‘Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to prayover them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.’ (James 5:14)Many of you know that I have been having problems with my sight. I have anongoing problem with my eyes which is treatable but not curable. At themoment though it is cataracts that are causing me difficulties in both readingand in seeing the world around me; I can’t, for example, recognise people inthe street until they are practically upon me. Fortunately, the treatment forcataracts is now well established and readily available. By the time you readthis article I will, God willing, have had surgery on one eye. What fewconcerns I have are mostly to do with how I will cope until the other eye isoperated upon and I can get a new pair of prescription glasses. I do thoughrealise that I am most fortunate that this is my only worry and that I do notlive somewhere in the world where cataract treatment is only available to thewell off.I have been well supported by the prayers of others and I am deeply gratefulfor the good wishes and kind thoughts of many friends across the parish andthe diocese. Yesterday, Sunday 14th May, I received the sacrament ofanointing for the sick from Archdeacon Richard. This is only the second timeI have received this sacrament and I found it a real means of grace. Many ofyou will recognise the quotation above from the Epistle of St James theApostle. This reminds us that the ministry of healing has been part of theChristian gospel since Jesus’ time and that anointing with oil is as old as ourfaith, and indeed has its antecedents in the Old Testament. A Catechism published in the USA has this to say about this sacrament:‘In the Church's Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry ofthe priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin – andsometimes even from physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival ofthe Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan toconquer sin and death by his dying and rising … When the Sacrament ofAnointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physicalhealing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by whichthe sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to dealwith the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age.’This sacrament is available to anyone who needs it in our parish. Blessed oilfor anointing those who are ill or at the point of death is reserved in a secureplace in St John’s Church. Should you desire this act of sacramental healingplease do contact me, whether for yourself or for a friend or relative.Fr Robert

The Locust YearsSome years ago an old school friend got in touch with me through his sister. We hadfirst met when at school together in Hong Kong but our family histories each includedan early childhood in Africa as well as time spent in Egypt, and, of all places, Essex. Wehad last seen each other in the flesh when I was sixteen. It was quite a surprise to me that he should get in touch after all these years. I now thinkthat like many of our age he had reached a stage in life when it is important to touchbase with those who share a formative period in their lives, and at a juncture when itbecomes critically important to try and make sense of one's life. In his case, his mother, to whom he had always been very close, was dying. His fatherand mine had worked together, and we had had a number of friends in common withwhom each of us had stayed in touch to varying degrees. My friend played a major, and intimate, role in looking after his mother in her finalmonths, and in an exemplary fashion. It took a huge toll on him in many ways. He letoff steam by recounting to me much of what had happened in his life in the decadessince we had last met up.Our lives had diverged sharply since our schooldays. In my case, my family and I hadmoved to Cumbria from Hong Kong due to my husband having experienced businessreversals, and I also had a long history of illness to combat, compounded by myhusband's illness in later life when he joined us here full-time. However, our difficultiespaled in significance compared with the reversals in fortune my friend had suffered overthe years. There have been times when I have been lost for words as to how torespond. There has also been another strand to our exchanges over the past few years. My friendhas been vitriolic in his attack on religion, and in particular on my faith, at times. Therehave been times when I have wondered why he continued to stay in touch! This has, strangely perhaps to some, served to strengthen my faith. I have had toexamine the basis for my faith more stringently; even if not, it would seem, to hissatisfaction. Yet he has proved relentless in challenging me.Someone who has experienced the extent of loss as he has in the course of his life maywell question the existence of God let alone a loving God. For me the dilemma has beenhow to counter this without coming across as sanctimonious and unworldly. I have hadto learn to speak his language in one sense, and to develop new skill sets - including asense of humour! (I can be a bit earnest at times...)In recent months there has been what can only be described as a seismic shift in hisoutlook; he has embarked on an exploration of spiritual matters (a different journey tomine, but one that seems to imbue him with hope). Quite where it will take him is notclear. But he is no longer as bitter and rejecting as when he first got in touch. I am reminded of Joel 2:25 in this regard:"I will restore to you the years that the locusts have eaten."Those of us who have never lived in Africa, the Middle East or the Far East may find ithard to envisage the sheer destruction that locust swarms leave in their wake: famineand starvation. This can have its spiritual counterpart. Yet God promises to restore usfrom such dereliction. What a mighty God we have! I am living in hope that my friendtoo will discover this. (Penelope Elias)

Dear All

The Trussell Trust have today released figures relating to the UK Foodbanks statistics for 2016 and 2017 which shows 1,182,954 people in crisis helped throughout the UK.

The North West as a whole helped 174,489 people.

The North Lakes Foodbank has given locally 3 day emergency food supplies to 5916 people last year, including 1808 children. (This figures does not include our Holiday Lunchpack 4 kids scheme which is part of our “more than food” campaign).

A 3% rise on last year.

Without your help we would not have been able to do this.

Thank you very much to you who donate, the volunteers who work with us, the schoolsand local businesses who support us and to the agencies who help our clients and give our vouchers out to the people who are in crisis.

Well Done Everyone for your constant support.

Kind Regards

Jessie Hendry Gooding
