Whatever pomp and ceremony were once performed within the palace of their King, the People of Israel are now instructed to reflect upon the values and qualities that flow from poverty and humility. “Your King comes to you … humble and riding on a donkey.” The image connects us to the Lord’s ‘triumphal’ entry into Jerusalem. Triumph must be won, can only be won, by treading the pathways of humility and simplicity. Donkeys were, and in many coun- tries remain, beasts of burden. The Lord chooses a humble donkey as his steed. In his Letter to the Romans, Saint Paul tells us that our “interests are not in the unspiritual, but in the spiritual.” Our conversion involves the body as well as the spirit. As temples of the Holy Spirit, we are to become a worthy dwelling place for the Lord. Saint Paul is reminding us that death awaits us all. Each day of our life must reflect an ap- preciation of the ‘eschatological’ sphere. Every day is di- rectly connected to what awaits us. Therefore, the neces- sary translation from the unspiritual to the spiritual must begin ‘today’. We cannot be so presumptuous as to delay our conversion until ‘just a little later’. We must make con- tact with the transformation that awaits us by transforming our lives now. In today’s text from Matthew’s Gospel, the Lord is prayer- ful and reflective. Immediately beforehand, he was accused of being possessed by demons, a blasphemy against his identity. Soon he will face the developing hostility of the Pharisees. In the midst of his prayer, Jesus draws his strength from the Father when he declares: “Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to re- veal him.” Jesus stands at the head of those described in the Hebrew Scriptures as the ‘Poor of Yahweh’. In Christ we are drawn into this blessed chorus. “Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest.” With the trust of a child, we must make our ap- proach to the Lord who alone can unburden our souls. We are then empowered to shoulder the yoke of salvation in communion with Christ. FEASTS OF THE WEEK.

.Monday 6th July – Memoria of Saint Maria Goretti, Virgin and Martyr.

Maria was born in 1890 near Ancona, Italy, the third of seven children. Her Father died when she was

nine and as a result the family struggled to survive. Maria and her family were forced to share a dwelling

with the work partner of her Father. This work partner had a son named Alexander who would become an

increasing danger to the young Maria. She celebrated her First Holy Communion aged eleven. Some

months later, Alexander made sinful advances toward Maria which she resisted. There came a moment

when, having been rebuffed, Alexander launched a violent attack against Maria, stabbing her with a long

dagger. Although rushed to hospital, Maria could not be saved. Before her death she prayed for Alexan-

der’s repentance and expressed her wish to see him in heaven. She was canonised by Pope Pius XII on

July 25th 1950, with her Mother, Brothers and Sisters present. Maria’s prayers for her assailant were

eventually answered. After eight years of unrepentant imprisonment, Alexander experienced a complete

change of heart. He was eventually released from prison after serving twenty-seven years. He begged for

and received the forgiveness of Maria’s Mother. He then became a Franciscan Capuchin Laybrother and

he offered evidence at the canonical inquiry that led to Maria’s canonisation.

Thursday 9th July – Memoria of Saint Augustine Zhao Ron and Companions, Martyrs of China.

Zhao Rong was a soldier in the Imperial Chinese Army. He was one of those charged with guarding

Bishop Jean Gabriel Dufresse, of the Paris Foreign Mission Society, escorting him to Beijing where he

was to be martyred. Zhao Rong was immensely impressed and moved by the example of calm serenity

exhibited by Bishop Dufresse as he approached his execution. Faith was stirred in the soul of Zhao Rong.

He would soon be baptised and embarked upon the pathway of formation that led him to the diocesan

priesthood. Christianity had been somewhat tolerated in China for some time, however, the Emperor Kia-

Kin (1796-1821) initiated a severe persecution of the Church through the promulgation of a sequence of

decrees. Father Augustine Zhao Rong would eventually face his own execution for the faith on 9th July

1815. He is given the position of eminence at the head of 120 Canonised Martyrs of China. In our own

day, despite the recent accords reached between the Holy See and the Chinese Government, the Church is

experiencing ongoing oppression and outright persecution at the hands of the communist authorities. We

are all aware of the current tensions in Hong Kong and on many other fronts, political and economic,

where the communist government is seeking to extend its influence and control. Let us pray earnestly for

our Chinese brothers and sisters in the faith as they bear witness to the glory of the Gospel.

I am grateful to Fr.Nicholas for setting up our telephone connection that will enable those who do not pos-sess internet access at home to nonetheless tune into our celebrations of the Sacred Liturgy. The 10.00.am Mass on Sunday will be recorded each week and will then be accessible by dialling our designated number. Fr.Nicholas edits the recording to cut out the inevitable silences. The telephone charge is a minimal local tariff. Please share the designat-ed number with those you know who would benefit from this connection.

The number is a local Cardiff number – (20) 098 149. If you are dialling from outside Cardiff or from a mobile phone you will need to dial 02920 098 149. Call charges will apply depending on your phone contract but please bear in mind that if you don't have inclusive minutes, the BT standard tariff is 20p per minute..

Saturday 11th July – Saint Benedict, Abbot, one of the designated Patrons of Europe.

Benedict is rightly given the title of Founder and Patriarch of Western Monasticism. He was born c.480 at

Nursia in central Italy. Rejecting the corruption of the world around him, Benedict left home so as to em-

brace a hermit’s life of prayer and penance. He took up residence in a cave on the mountain of Subiaco,

near Rome. He was tutored by St.Romanus, a Solitary who lived nearby. Benedict’s reputation for sanctity

soon spread and he gathered many disciples. His followers were called upon to adopt the prescriptions of a

rule whilst living in community. In 529 Benedict left Subiaco and moved to Monte Cassino where he was

to establish the great monastery. The Rule of Saint Benedict would form the foundation for all monastic life

across western Europe in the centuries which followed. The spirit of the Rule sponsors the conquest of all

selfishness through the exercise of poverty, chastity and obedience. Even beyond the confines of the mon-

astery, the principles of the evangelical virtues should be appropriately embraced by all the faithful. Bene-

dict’s own sister, Saint Sholastica, embraced the teachings of her brother and herself presided over a com-

munity of nuns near Monte Cassino. Benedict died on March 21st 543 as he stood before the Altar having

just received Holy Communion. As we celebrate the feast, there will be a particular thanksgiving at St.Mary

of the Angels in recognition of its Benedictine heritage. Let us pray for all our Benedictine communities of

monks and nuns across the country. We offer a particular prayer for the wellbeing of Dom Christopher

Delaney.

Another inspection was undertaken on the site of St.Mary’s Parish Hall on Friday 3rd July. Bore

hole samples were taken by contractors and the surveyor was also in attendance to undertake a

further examination of the subsidence and its effects. I will keep you informed of the results when

I receive the report.

UPDATE ON FINANCE AND PROPERTY.

A Prayer by St.Alphonsus Liguori.

My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and

I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at

least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as being already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never

permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

A Prayer by St.Thomas More.

Give me, good Lord, a longing to be with You … give me warmth, delight and quickness in thinking upon

You. And give me Your grace to long for Your holy sacraments, and specially to rejoice in the presence of

Your blessed Body, Sweet Saviour Christ, in the Holy Sacrament of the Altar.

ACTS OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION.

I ask all parishioners to keep contact with those you know to be on their own during this period. If

you know of anyone who is in any kind of need then please contact the Priory directly. Let us help

one another to stay safe and well.

REMEMBRANCE OF OUR PARISHIONERS WHO ARE MOST ISOLATED AND

VULNERABLE.

Wash me from my guilt and cleanse me of my sin. I acknowledge my offence; my sin is before

me always. Psalm 50:4-5.

Father, I have sinned against you and am not worthy to be called your son. Be merciful to me, a

sinner. Luke 15:18; 18:13.

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do

good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your

help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Saviour Jesus

Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.

O my God, because you are so good, I am very sorry that I have sinned against you, and with the

help of your grace I will not sin again.

LET US DAILY OPEN OUR HEARTS IN CONTRITION TO ALMIGHTY GOD AND RE-

MIND OURSELVES HOW ESSENTIAL IT IS TO GRANT MERCY IF WE EVER EXPECT

TO RECEIVE MERCY.

PRAYER OF SORROW / ACT OF CONTRITION.

I am most grateful to Jack Meggitt-Phillips who has now completed all the necessary checks and

who has therefore been appointed as our new Parish Safeguarding Representative for St.Mary of

the Angels. I have known Jack for many years. He lives in Cardiff and London and is a children’s

author.

APPOINTMENT OF A NEW PARISH SAFEGUARDING REPRESENTATIVE AT

ST.MARY OF THE ANGELS.

On Tuesday 7th July Fr.Nicholas will celebrate the second anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood.

We offer him our congratulations and extend to him the assurance of our prayers. We give thanks for his

priestly ministry in service to the Lord within our Archdiocese and specifically within the context of our

two parishes. Most of you will be aware that Fr.Nicholas is also Director of Vocations for the Archdio-

cese. He is currently supervising the final stages of a Candidate’s application to commence formation.

Please keep this process in your prayers whilst also praying that the hearts of others will respond to the

Lord’s invitation. I am currently working with a Candidate who is preparing for ordination to the Perma-

nent Diaconate and I ask you to keep him in your prayers at this time.

CONGRATULATIONS TO FR. NICHOLAS.

Some three weeks ago, Gill took ill and was taken to hospital where it was confirmed that she had suf-

fered a heart attack. I was asked not to publicise the information at the time. I am happy to report that Gill

is recovering well and this past week saw her return home. She is obviously very tired but is in good spir-

its, in accord with her usual disposition. I have given her clear instructions to remain obedient to the med-

ical advice. Please keep her and the family in your prayers.

NEWS OF GILL MIELE.

I wish to express my sincere thanks to Dorothy and Michael for their long service in managing

the Repository at St.Mary’s. Both have been subject to strict isolation during the lock-down. They

have written to me to say that now is the right moment for them to hand over responsibility for

the Repository to some younger volunteers. Both Dorothy and Michael have been stalwart serv-

ants of the parish and we look forward to the day when they, together with all of our senior pa-

rishioners, will be able to set themselves free from isolation. My thanks to them both.

*** Although it will be some time before the Repository can function once again, I would be

grateful to hear from anyone who might be interested in assisting with its management.

A WORD OF THANKS TO DOROTHY AND MICHAEL HOWELLS.

We are being encouraged to place a candle in our windows this Saturday evening in memory of

those who have died as a result of the pandemic. Let us light a votive candle and offer a prayer

for the faithful departed. On Sunday we will celebrate the seventy second anniversary of the

founding of the N.H.S. and we are asked to applaud all those who work in caring for the sick in

all sorts of capacities. The current situation continues to remind us how interconnected we all are

and how important it is to express our appreciation for our medical and caring staff.

THE RE-OPENING OF OUR CHURCHES.

Following the lead given by the Catholic Bishop’s of Wales, the headteachers of all Catholic schools in

Wales have written a joint letter to the First Minister, Dr.Mark Drakeford (our own local Member of the

Senedd), asking him to rethink proposed changes to the teaching of religious education. The 80 headteach-

ers highlight how the proposals specifically target the identity and mission of Catholic schools. The Welsh

Government plan to replace traditional R.E. with what is entitled ‘Religion, Values and Ethics’. As well as

undermining the academic rigour of the subject, the proposals, which were published in May (in the midst

of the Pandemic), place additional and unreasonable legal requirements on our schools. They would effec-

tively be forced to deliver two distinct R.E. curriculums without any consideration of the extra resources

that would require. More fundamentally, the proposals would impose a so-called ‘neutral values’ environ-

ment where the Catholic Faith would have to be presented as merely one element amongst many. These

proposals would negate the ethos and mission of our schools. Mr.Paul Barber, the Director of the Catholic

Education Service for England and Wales, commented: “I hope this letter makes the Welsh Government

realise the overwhelming strength of feeling within the Catholic community against these proposals. They

strike at the very identity of Catholic schools and at the heart of the principle that parents, and not the state,

are the primary and principal educators of their children.” I ask all parishioners to pray that the Welsh Gov-

ernment will withdraw their proposals as they apply to Catholic schools. In addition to our prayers, it will

be necessary for every parish across Wales to participate in the campaign to change these proposals.

CATHOLIC RESPONSE TO THE WELSH GOVERNMENT’S R.E. PROPOSALS

Francis Mostyn (Born on 6th August 1860, Died 25th October 1939) served as Vicar-Apostolic of Wales,

Bishop of Menevia and finally as the Second Archbishop of Cardiff. It was he who wrote The Prayer for

Wales. It is recommended that it be recited as part of our Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction. Our land

was nurtured in the Catholic faith from Roman times, though most people tend to categorise the Christian

heritage of Wales only in terms of the Protestant non-conformist tradition that has its roots in the eighteenth

century. The collapse of the non-conformist chapel structure and the widespread lapsation from all other

Christian traditions has left Wales in the remarkable position of being the least Christian part of the United

Kingdom. My maternal grandfather was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church of Wales whilst my paternal

lineage was characterised by a most fervent Catholicity. I was nurtured within a most natural ecumenical

environment where there was a deep respect for the common foundations of Christian faith. As a child I en-

joyed the summer Chapel outings as well as the Church outings – there is nothing like a double dose of ice

cream for nurturing an ecumenical spirit in any child. I have a clear recollection of my paternal grandmoth-

er saying that she knew of no better Christian example than that provided by my maternal grandfather. We

all have a responsibility to serve the work of evangelisation. All the baptised are called to be witnesses to

the Gospel in service to the Kingdom of God. Our contemporary Wales is a barren land in terms of Chris-

tian faith. The proportion of the population who attend any sort of Christian service regularly is significant-

ly lower than in any other part of the United Kingdom. Let us employ Archbishop Mostyn’s Prayer for

Wales as part of our care for the nation and its people. The task is great for it is not merely a matter of re-

kindling faith in the hearts of the lapsed but rather a matter of presenting the faith for the first time to the

multitude who have never heard the Gospel.

O Almighty God, who in your infinite goodness have sent your only-begotten Son into this world to open

once more the gates of heaven, and to teach us how to know, love and serve you, have mercy on your peo-

ple who dwell in Wales. Grant to them the precious gift of faith, and unite them in the one true Church

founded by your divine Son: that, acknowledging her authority and obeying her voice, they may serve you,

love you, and worship you as you desire in this world, and obtain for themselves everlasting happiness in

the world to come. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
