GABRIEL PROJECT ST. BARTHOLOMEW PAY IT FORWARD THANK YOU!! Since the Pandemic began, the Gabriel Project has helped over 36 moms. We had several women who have lost their jobs and found themselves unable to pay for rent or groceries. We have worked with Catholic Charities to help them keep a roof over their head. Thanks to an agreement we made with the St. Vin-cent DePaul Society Pantry here at St. Bartholomew, Gabriel moms have been able to get food for their families, even if they are not in the area normally serviced by the pantry. Our closet has been open to the moms every other Wednesday. We are providing them with everything they need for their ba-bies while following all CDC guidelines. NONE of this could have been done without the help of the parishioners here. We have been able to keep our closet well stocked with everything our moms need. The most important thing we have been able to do for these moms is provide them spiritual support. We pray with and for them every time we make our weekly contacts with them. We have also provided them with a Spiritual Packet that includes items like the Magnifact, a rosary along with a prayer booklet to teach them how to pray the rosary. Thanks to all of you for giving these moms and their precious babies HOPE!!!

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Today we begin a continuous reading of Mark’s Gospel that continues until the First Sunday of Lent in February. The Gospel of Mark challenges people to action, to change, and to grow. In today’s Gospel Jesus actively calls people to repentance and to embrace the Kingdom of God. Jesus also calls four men to be disciples; Simon, Andrew, James, and John. Jesus asked them to become “fishers of men” and leaving everything behind they followed him without hesita-tion. Jesus called for radical change from his followers; “The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Jesus does not invite people to “consider” changing or “weigh” their options—He asked them to respond in the mo-ment; on the spot. The Gospel of Mark portrays Jesus as a “man on a mission” moving quickly to build a movement that would change people’s lives. In a moment Jesus invites his disciples to leave everything and follow! Jesus asks people to repent. Often when we think about repentance we tend to think of some morbid, even depress-ing, reflection on our overwhelming sinfulness. Sometimes an examination of conscience is just another opportunity to think about one’s self—it can be a manifestation of self-absorption. Self-absorption is not a healthy thing and it cannot lead to holiness. We must follow Jesus’ example. When we examine our lives we can easily identify our sinfulness. Instead of meditating on it and moping about it Jesus challenges us, on the spot, to repent and follow! To repent really means to rethink—reconsider. Jesus is asking us to look at the things that separate us from him and our brothers and sisters and to dump them and move on! Growth in faithful discipleship happens when we do something—when we move on.
