We also hear at the Christmas vigil the long genealogy of almost unpronounceable names tracing Jesuslineage all the way back to Abraham. Sometimes these readings with their ancient biblical figures can go over our heads and leave us wondering what they have to do with us and with Christs coming. Firstly, Id like to point out that the Christmas day liturgy presents us with that soaring text from Johns Gospel in which we are told of Christs pre-existence and divinity, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with Godand the Word be- came flesh and lived among us…” Well the long genealogies and the references to the house of Davidand the stock of Jessearound this time are meant to tell us that the extraordinary event narrated in Johns Gospel was in a sense quite ordinary. They witness to the fact that the incarnation of the transcendent God is not some abstract affair out there somewhere; rather that the Word became flesh within real human histo- ry, into a particular culture, a particular time, and was born into a par- ticular family. In short, the incarnation is real. But since it is true that God came among us in real space and time, in a way that was earthy, vulnerable and particular, this is exactly how God continues to come among us today. For as Ive said before, Christs arrival is not once upon a time”, but here, now and always. That means Jesus is not simply an historic figure found within the pages of the bible and remembered when we go to church. It means he is to be found in ordinary circumstances: in your kitchen, in your bedroom, out in the street, as you drive in your car, when youre having coffee with a friend, at the supermarket, or at work. Since our world is sacramental, the person of Jesus can be found in any particular circum- stance in any particular place, if we but enter the fragile silence of any particular present moment. I can name no greater joy than to reach out and let ourselves be grasped by Christ within that moment. To conclude, Id like to point out that this extraordinarily ordinary event has further consequences for us. The incarnation is in a very real sense Gods marriageto human nature– divinity and hu- manity were joined most perfectly and intimately, becoming one fleshin the person of Jesus. Therefore what we do to others we truly do to God. Every time we gossip about another person, insult them, write them off, use them or neglect their needs, we do it to Jesus who is joined to them. On the other hand, every time we treat someone with respect, generosity, and tenderness, or every time we apologise, for- give, serve, and love another, we do it to Jesus who is joined to them. Let us carry this mystery with us everywhere we go, into the new year and always. by Thomas Duncan

4th Sunday of Advent Year B

What strikes me about today’s readings and the readings throughout the various Christmas liturgies is the frequent mention of King David and his father Jesse. We also hear at the Christmas vigil the long genealogy of almost unpronounceable names tracing Jesus’ lineage all the way back to Abraham. Sometimes these readings with their ancient biblical figures can go over our heads and leave us wondering what they have to do with us and with Christ’s coming. Firstly, I’d like to point out that the Christmas day liturgy presents us with that soaring text from John’s Gospel in which we are told of Christ’s pre-existence and divinity, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
