The 15th Sunday of Ordinary Time July 12, 2020

GENERATIONS OF FAITH (“GOF”) NEWSWe are excited to report that we will be celebrating First Communion with our young parishioners soon! Beginning with the first week in August and continuing through Labor Day, the children will be receiving the sacrament in small groups at our regular Saturday and Sunday liturgies. Although the circumstances necessitated by our current health crisis are not ideal, we welcome these children to the table of the Lord with great joy!

Looking ahead to September and our next year of GOF, we are currently weighing some of the options for Large Group Classes and GOF events. One approach which we are considering would be to have in-person Large Group Classes for Grades 2 & 10 only, with classes divided to allow for proper sizes with social distancing. Other grades would have online class resources available. Although we are planning to offer a full schedule of GOF Learning Events this year, we are aware that most likely large gatherings of this type may not be permitted, at least through 2020, and much of that learning will be online as well. We will let you know once we have a plan in mind, although one thing we

have all learned in these last months is the importance of flexibility!

Each year, our GOF events take a deep dive into a specific theme of Catholic Teaching. You may remember that last year it was the Creed, before that, the Sacraments, Liturgical Year, etc. This year our GOF events will focus on Mercy. Some of the topics include: reconciliation and healing, prayer and mercy toward each other and the Earth. In the words of Pope Francis, mercy is a verb, not a noun. What does that mean for us?

We will be reaching out to you in the coming weeks with our plans for the the rest of 2020. In the meantime, enjoy these summer weeks!

Be safe and well!

AnnAnn Lahiff, Pastoral Associate

“DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.”

1 Corinthians 11:24

Four weeks ago, on the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, the Archdiocese of Boston kicked off the Year of the Eucharist. The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ celebrates the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

Pope Francis celebrated Mass that day inside St. Peter’s Basilica. In his homily he spoke extensively about the Eucharist, the true presence of Jesus and how Jesus’ gift to us strengthens us and can transform our lives. Pope Francis stated that the Eucharist heals us of our wounds, emptiness and sadness, and gives us the strength to share Christ’s loving mercy with others.

This coming year as we acknowledge and celebrate Jesus’ gift of Himself to us in the Eucharist let us also be transformed by this selfless gift. Pope Francis said, “This is the strength of the Eucharist, which transforms us into bringers of God, bringers of joy, not negativity.”

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or if you would like to join with your fellow parishioners in becoming a Missionary of

the Eucharist. My email is [email protected].

God bless you and your loved ones. Be safe!

Deacon Bob

SUSTAINING MUSIC MINISTRYTo those of you who are joining us in person, first and foremost welcome back, and welcome home. It is great to see those of you that made the decision to return to the liturgy for the first time in months. Thank you for doing so in as responsible a manner as possible – maintain a safe distance, washing hands and using hand sanitizer judiciously, keeping masks on (and covering both your mouth and nose), and all other precautions necessary to mitigate the risk of transmitting and contracting the coronavirus. A special thanks to those who helped disinfect pews, doors, and other surfaces between Masses. We appreciate your help and cooperation in transitioning back into operation as a parish.

To those of you participating in the Mass from home via the online resources, thank you as well. Your decision to delay returning to parish activity keeps manageable the strain of balancing both the restrictions of public health guidelines and being available for the Sacrament. We are committed to continue providing these resources – broadcast Masses via YouTube, as well as online print resources such as a worship aid and bulletin – for as long as the need persists. We hope to see you back, too, but appreciate and respect your decision to do so at a later time.As many of you know, the archdiocesan guidelines regarding music in the liturgy are unprecedented. Because the virus is spread through droplets contained in the air we breathe out (and in), singing proposes a vastly higher risk than speaking

– singing projects the voice, and with it, the breath, over a larger area and with a greater density. Therefore, the role of music and the participation of the assembly has been turned upside down. “[F]ull and active participation by all the people is the aim to be considered before all else…”, as set out in the Constitution of Sacred Liturgy, has been suspended (and rightly so) in the light of current awareness that the health and safety of the people of the Church is an undisputable priority. As such, choral and congregational singing has been suspended, and the vocal music of a soloist and psalmist is severely limited in this current environment. When and how these restrictions may be lifted is something about which I hope and pray constantly. I am saddened for this loss of richness in how we celebrate the Mass. At the same time, I am grateful for the opportunity to experience the Liturgy in its current state as an alternative to not celebrating the Liturgy at all.

So in the spirit of making lemonade out of lemons, music ministry at Incarnation is taking this opportunity to focus on instrumental music. Stringed and percussion instruments are particularly worth encouraging at this point, as they do not rely on the human breath for production. I am reaching out to our instrumentalists that regularly assist at Mass already, but want to make sure those instrumental musicians not currently engaged in music ministry know – this is a call for you. We often put calls out for increased participation in the choir, and we rely on our cantors to lead our sung participation at all of our Liturgies, but now the focus is on you,

instrumentalists of the parish. This is an opportunity for your gifts and talents to be seen and shared with the parish community to a greater extent than ever before. If you are a musician of high school age or older and are willing to help assist your parish community in worship at any of our Masses, please email or call the parish office. We’d love to hear from you, and we’d love to hear you.

THE 15TH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

JULY 12, 2020

Yearning for GoodnessThe readings for this nearly mid-summer Sunday reflect the beauties of the earth: its golden harvests, its astonishing Spring, its delicate birds, beasts, mountains, hills and plains. Even in this time of virus, those whose eyes can see will find infinite surprise!

I must be fully myself and allow God to do the rest.

Yes, even in this time of virus and troubles.

I want to quote a complete poem in this space, hoping that I am not just indulging my attachment to poetry. The Jesuit poet Hopkins was so filled with the world’s beauty that I want him to speak here, in the poem called “Pied Beauty.”*

Glory be to God for dappled things— For skies of couple-color as a brinded cow;

For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings;

Landscape plotted and pieced—fold, fallow, and plough;And all trades, their gear and tackle and trim.

All things counter, original, spare, strange; Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows

how?) With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;

He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change: Praise him.*

Some of the language is unusual, I admit. I hope the footnote below will help you, especially when you read the poem out loud. If you spend time with these glorious images you will come to love our ever-evolving blue planet like someone bathing in the gentle tide of ocean swirl. All of it luxuriant, all of it precious.

In the First Reading the Lord uses this ebb and flow of seasons to show the workings of his visceral love for the earth.

He says,

Just as the rain and snow come down to earth, and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, … so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth. It comes to the world and does not return until it has moistened and nourished life in every single creature that will receive it.

A fruitful harvest, the Psalm calls it.

Then, in the Second Reading, St. Paul speaks of all creation groaning in labor pains. Human beings too groan within themselves like seeds which break open and push their way through tough ground and evolve into full trees that stretch up for Christ’s light.

Can such rich images apply to you and me? How is our own soil? God pours his grace into it always. Do you and I groan and yearn for the goodness of God which is already lavished upon us? Do we take time each day to let love in? Or when we listen

to the Word on Sunday, perhaps with some interest, do we then forget everything by Monday?

Jesus lists a number of things we might have to correct in order to accept the gifts he has ready for us (Gospel). We might be shallow ground, he says. Or rocky soil. Weeds might choke us.

Discouraging, isn’t it? Must I pretend to be rich soil, though I know my shallowness?

No. I must be fully myself and allow God to do the rest. The Indian poet Tagore put it this way:

The cloud stood humbly in a corner of the sky.The morning crowned it with splendor.

(Tagore, Stray Birds, #100)

Let us be humble and join in the revolving refreshment of all earthly things. Can’t we open our leaves, and allow the sun to come in?

John Foley, SJ________* For convenience, here is a glossary of some of Hopkins’ terms:

pied: patches of a number colors, as various birds and other animals have.

Also, the Pied Piper. dappled: marked by spots of a different shade,

tone, or color brinded: an archaic word referring to grey or

brown streaks or patterns, as in a cat’s fur. stipple: dots or small touches of the brush, used to

make a painting (or a newspaper photo).

fallow: Land plowed but left unseeded during a growing season._______Fr. John Foley, SJ, is a composer and scholar at Saint Louis University.
