The 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 8, 2020

    Dear Friends,

The month of November has traditionally been a time for all of us to remember in our thoughts and prayers our family members and friends who have died and gone before us in faith. The month began this past week with our celebration of All Saints (November 1) Day and All Souls (November 2) Day. Many of our loved ones we remember fondly as “saints” who bestowed on us so many blessings with their kindness, generosity, and love. Their death leaves a constant void in our lives, but our remembrance of them this month serves as a reminder to us that they are always with us. Over the years, it has been the tradition of the parish to place what is called “The Book of the Dead” in a prominent place in the church where people inscribed the names of their loved ones in a book for the entire parish to pray for and remember. Unfortunately due to the virus the placement of the book this year is not possible. There is, however, another tradition that has happened. We have

placed a memorial tree at the front of the church which contains the names on ornaments of all those whom we have celebrated a funeral for since last November. I am sure these families very much appreciate our prayers and remembrance of their loved one at this time. May they rest in peace and may we remember with gratitude all those gone before us in faith.

    Fr. Steve

    Urgent Request

The year 2020 has been such a huge challenge for so many reasons. I

want to make you aware of another new challenge that presented itself this week. It is the reason for this urgent request for your help and

assistance. We need to replace the boiler in the church. It is the worst nightmare for any pastor. Every

year before the winter months arrive there is an inspection of the boiler

and the heating system. This annual inspection determined that the boiler

needs to be replaced at this time. You all know how much I dislike

asking or appealing to you for your financial assistance. But in this case the timing is critical. The cold winter weather will soon be with us and the boiler needs to be functioning well at that time. I would prefer not to take

out a loan to accomplish the necessary work which is why I am asking you first to do whatever you

can to help out. Thank you in advance of your generosity to this

    urgent request.

    Gratefully,

    Fr. Steve

VETERANS DAY 2020Veterans Day is observed on Wednesday, November 11. Since 1954 it has been a National Holiday on which we Americans honor and remember those living and dead who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States. Who do you know to be a veteran, is it a parent, a relative, a brother, a sister, a neighbor, a classmate? Is there some way as Veterans Day approaches that we thank them for their service? At 11 AM on Wednesday November 11, Melrose will dedicate a Reflection Area for those who served during the VietNam War. The area being dedicated is at Knoll. All are welcome.

“Mommy, are we there yet?” It was a real question, and I wasn’t quoting someone else, so I thought.

By now I have heard child after child ask exactly the same question of a parent, in exactly the same words. Maybe it is an innate instinct, like geese flying south or robins pulling up worms.

As we become mature, we human beings do learn to wait, to live with the “not yet.” We call it “delayed gratification.” We may want to be home, for instance, but to get there from work, we might have to walk to the bus stop, wait for the #10, hand over the fee, stand until there is a seat, sit down at long last, wait some more, get off, walk 50 blocks (it seems), unlock the door, and finally, finally, finally, put our feet up and relax. Some days this can be annoying, but usually “we get used to it.”

But we shouldn’t get overly used to it. That is the point of this week’s readings. Since we are not children, we can overlook the joy or pleasure when our goal finally arrives. Do you even remember to taste food when you finally get your dinner? Did

you remember to enjoy in quiet detail the friend you haven’t seen (at least virtually) in a year?

Sunday’s First Reading reminds us peacefully and beautifully to watch for God at dawn; to keep vigil because Wisdom (the Holy Spirit of God) actually is searching for those who are waiting. The Responsorial Psalm boldly names our craving for God! It says, “my soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.” And, the Gospel adds, stay awake, make

preparations. Do not be foolish. Do not forget to be ready.

We are like parched ground without rain. We have huge fractures in our surface. Our souls ache for the gentle, courteous and tender outpouring God wants to do—not a thing like hurricanes or floods, but like a mother feeding her newborn.

Let’s face it. You and I desire God more than anything

else. At the center of our souls is a thirst that will never be slaked unless the God of all creation comes in person to be living water for us.

“Your kindness is a greater good than life,” the Psalm says to God.

What did you say? But life is so essential, so to be preserved, so valuable that we fight like a cornered wolf when it is threatened. Even so, in spite of all our flurry, God’s delicious kindness is a far greater good than anything else we know, greater even than being alive. It is worth the wait, no matter how long.

So, be excited like a child. Let yourself say “I want,” like kids do. But also, be calm like an adult. Know that when our desires are thwarted we can wait, as wisdom waits for us.

    PERSPECTIVE OF JUSTICE

Be Watchful, Be ReadyThe theme of the Gospel is: “Be watchful and ready.” We are in a condition of awaiting something or someone important, and we don’t know when the arrival will take place. Hence the advice: “keep your eyes open, for you know not the day or the hour.”

The liturgy combines this reading with a passage from Wisdom, suggesting that what we are awaiting is the arrival of wisdom: “he who watches for her at dawn shall not be disappointed.”

When will we finally understand what we need to know in order to live together as brothers and sisters?

When will we get the wisdom to place the one true God ahead of our petty gods of power, possessions, and pleasure? When will we be inspired with the wisdom to overcome our social ills? We do not

know when, and so we must be watchful and ready, otherwise the moment will pass us by.

One thing we do know: wisdom “makes her own rounds, seeking those worthy of her.” Those will not be found worthy who do not listen to the Scriptures, or to their own experiences, or to the sufferings of those around them. The message to them will be tragic: “I tell you, I do not know you.”

We do not know the time for the consummation of the earth and of humanity, nor do we know how all things will be transformed. As deformed by sin, the shape of this world will pass away; but we are taught that God is preparing a new dwelling place and a new earth where justice will abide, and whose blessedness will answer and surpass all the longings for peace which spring up in the human heart.

    GLANCING THOUGHTS

The FoolishIn the Gospel parable, there are ten women waiting for the Lord. But when the Lord comes, half of these women are rejected. As the parable explains it, the problem is that five of the women are off shopping for oil when the Lord comes, and so they’re left out. They are the foolish ones. The other five women are the wise ones, welcomed by the Lord.

Love for others isn’t one of the virtues of the foolish either.

    6

  • Incarnation Parish Bulletin

Well, notice that when the ten women originally arrived at the place where they were to wait for their Lord, the five foolish women did notice that the wise women had brought extra oil with them. But humility doesn’t seem to have been one of the virtues of the foolish women. When they saw that the wise women had brought extra oil for their lamps, the foolish ones apparently just felt they knew better than the wise: the oil in their lamps would not run out.

And maybe, after all, it didn’t seem very important to the foolish women whether the oil in their lamps would last. When the foolish discovered that they were wrong and were short on oil, they didn’t lament their mistake. Their first thought was just to demand some of the oil of the wise.

The foolish didn’t care if the wise suffered in consequence. The foolish were willing to risk the welfare of the wise, provided only that the foolish had a chance of getting something for themselves.

Love for others isn’t one of the virtues of the foolish either.

What would have happened if the foolish women had not risked missing the Lord by going after the oil they wanted but had just waited for him instead, without oil? What would have happened if their Lord had found them in darkness but also in humility, not trying to climb to safety on the backs of others, but just acknowledging their mistakes and hoping in the Lord? Does anyone really think that their Lord would have cast them out?

Their folly lies in their insistence on having just what they want when they want it, no matter what the risk or the cost to anyone else. And that is why they are cast out.
