Jubilee Year of Mercy October 9, 2016

Jubilee of Marian Devotion This weekend, the Jubilee honors Mary under the title Pope Francis suggests, “Mother of Mercy.” Recall the Good Samaritan Gospel. Priest and Levite saw suffering but showed no mercy. Recall the rich man, who never saw Lazarus right before his eyes, and showed no mercy. Today, Jesus sees ten lepers from afar and shows extraordinary mercy. Mary’s entire life, declares Francis, was modeled on Jesus, “Mercy-Made-Flesh.” Indeed, standing at the cross, Mary saw Jesus’ mercy take flesh when Jesus showed mercy to the executioners. So Pope Francis recommends we frequently pray the Salve Regina, Hail, Holy Queen, asking her to ever look upon us with mercy, so that we might be worthy to gaze upon the face of her merciful Son Jesus. May we do so not only in eternity, but here and now, opening our eyes to see Jesus in others, and our hearts to serve Jesus in others by loving deeds of unconditional mercy. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. From The Desk of Father Kenneth Nobrega

Question: Is not giving back to God and supporting St. Joseph the Worker Church, a church where people are being spiritually fed, nourished, renewed, reconciled and being healed by God not worthy of 2 hours of my 40 hour weekly wage? Answer: The truthful answer is “yes” - God deserves our gratitude and our sacrifices, and we all need the spir-itual help that comes through His Church. Perhaps the real question is not how much we should give back to God on Sundays but how much do we really appreciate what God continually gives to us? Our weekly goal to properly operate and improve our parish is $8,875. Last Sunday, October 2nd, we received approximately 28% of our weekly goal: 8:00am Mass: $1,212.00 9:30am Mass: $693.10 11:00am Spanish Mass: $598.66 --------------------------------- Total: $2,503.76 Please support our church with your prayers and financial gifts – we really need both. Your spiritual and financial support makes a huge difference.

Thank you and blessings to all of you. Fr. Kenneth Nobrega

St. Joseph, pray for us.

SUNDAY COLLECTION INFORMATION

Second Collection This week’s second collection is for the support of our re-tired Oakland Diocese Priests. Pease see our bulletin insert for more details.

Dear Parishioners and friends of St. Joseph, I just came back from our Oakland Diocese’s four-day priest convocation with Bishop Michael Barber. The main theme of our convocation was how to help the parish church and particularly the Sunday Mass day “experience” become a time where people can have a profound encoun-ter with the Lord. Bishop Michael Barber supports my desire and that of our parishioners to restore the sense of transcendence to our experience of the Sacred Liturgy at St. Joseph the Worker Church. Our Goal is to make St. Joseph a place where pa-rishioners and visitors alike can truly experience beautiful, sacred encounters with the Lord through our Holy Sacrific-es of the Mass being offered with great dignity, love, rever-ence and beauty. Choirs and Sacred Music is an extremely important component of Sacred Liturgy, and so it is with this, I am very pleased to announce that we are blessed to have a new organist and music consultant at St. Joseph the Worker. Mr. Samuel Dorlaque comes to us with an impressive back-ground and is highly regarded within the Catholic sacred music community. If you are interested in joining a choir at St. Joseph the Worker church, please contact Sam Dorlaque at (510) 709 – 9036 or by email at [email protected] Sam is excited to be with us as together we will pray and face the Lord with sounds of praise and gratitude. Pax Christi, Fr. Kenneth Nobrega

Prayer of Pope Francis for the

Jubilee

Oración de Papa

Francisco

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happi-ness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought af-ter, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the inter-cession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
