PASTOR POINTS Dear Friends,
This week the Church celebrates the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows on September 15. For a while there were two feasts in honor of the Sorrowful Mother: one going back to the 15th century, the other to the 17th century. For a period of time both were celebrated by the universal Church: one on the Friday before Palm Sunday, the other in September. The principal biblical references to Mary’s sorrows are in Luke 2:35 and John 19:26-27. The Lucan passage is Simeon’s prediction about a sword piercing Mary’s soul; the Johannine passage relates the words of Je-sus from the cross to Mary and to the beloved disci-ple. Many early Church writers interpret the sword as Mary’s sorrows, especially as she saw Jesus die on the cross. Thus, the two passages are brought together as prediction and fulfillment.
Saint Ambrose, in particular, viewed The Blessed Mother Mary as a sorrowful yet powerful figure at the cross. Mary stood fearlessly at the cross while others fled. Mary looked on her Son’s wounds with pity, but saw in them the salvation of the world. As Jesus hung on the cross, Mary did not fear to be killed, but offered herself to her persecutors.
St. John’s account of Jesus’ death is highly sym-bolic. When Jesus gives the beloved disciple to Mary, we are invited to appreciate Mary’s role in the Church: She symbolizes the Church; the beloved disci-ple represents all believers. As Mary mothered Jesus, she is now mother to all his followers. Furthermore, as Jesus died, he handed over his Spirit. Mary and the Spirit cooperate in begetting new children of God—almost an echo of Luke’s account of the conception of Jesus. As Christians, we can trust that we will continue to experience the caring presence of Mary and Jesus’ Spirit throughout our lives and throughout history. Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us!

PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION NEWS
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We have some exciting PSR news! Our Parish School of Religion now offers faith formation to those in KINDERGAR-TEN through Grade 8!
If you have a child that is not attending a Catholic school, you are reminded to register them for our PSR (Parish School of Religion) program that starts next Sunday, September 19, 2021. We meet at St. Mary’s Central School from 10:10 – 11:15am. Register online by visiting our parish website or in person at the Par-ish Offices.
We encourage you to sign up your children for PSR even after they receive their Confirmation in 5th grade. PSR focus in grades 6 - 8 will be on the study of the Bible and the practical ways of using the Gifts of the Holy Spirit that the children received at Confir-mation.
Preparation for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist will begin in January, 2022. The requirement to receive these sacraments is having attended a faith formation program for 2 years either in a Catholic school or in PSR. There will be more de-tails coming soon.
The Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated in the Fifth Grade in the Diocese of Steubenville. As with the other sacraments, 2 years of faith formation are needed to receive Confirmation. Those children that do not attend a Catholic school should register for both the PSR program and Confirmation preparation at the same time. Confirmation classes will take place every Second Sunday of the month after 11:30am Mass.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Michal at [email protected].
