From the Pastor’s Desk...
Because we live in these present times of 2018, we tend to wear blinders about the world, American society, the Church, and past events. There seems to be, in our day, a great deal of dissention and division in so many areas of life. People are disagreeing and being very disagreeable in the process. All these differences in political and church matters are given full blown coverage in the press, of course. We come to believe that in past generations and times, people were more unified and harmonious and that these present times are the worst ever. Even a close look at sacred scripture reveals that this was simply not the case.
Today’s Gospel is a good example. John the Evangelist writes in his post-Resurrection account that “these (signs) are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.” He passed down this account of “doubting” Thomas to document that a great many people doubted that Jesus had risen from the dead. In truth, this was a difficult reality to grasp. Even Thomas, one of the twelve disciples, has a faith which needed to be reinforced by a personal challenge from the risen Christ. Jesus invited Thomas to touch Him and feel the marks of the crucifixion in His hands and side. Jesus tells him, “do not be unbelieving, but believe.”
Today’s Gospel emphasizes “belief” which can be life changing. In those first days of Christian faith after the Resurrection of Jesus, a great many followers of Jesus probably fell away because they simply could not accept the very idea of a man, known to have been killed, walking around live in the flesh. That is why these recorded eyewitness accounts of the living Jesus were so important to the early Church. This is why John and the other Gospel writers all included in their accounts these actual meetings of the disciples with the risen Jesus.
In today’s Gospel, however, Thomas is rescued from the ranks of the unbelievers and doubters. Seeing was, for him, believing, as the expression goes. Doubt is not necessarily the worst human reaction. Doubt can be resolved. Jesus states in today’s Gospel, “blessed are those who have not seen yet believed.” This Gospel is “knee deep” in the division and controversy over the Resurrection. If our belief is real and authentic, the manner of our lives will demonstrate that, and for a doubting world, this can be living proof.
Have a good week!
Fr. Bill Arnold

Did you know? The Catholic Church consists of more than just the Roman Catholic Church, or as it is sometimes referred to, the “Western Rite Church.” There are 22 Eastern Rites that are in full communion with Rome and, although they go by different names, they are every bit as much a part of the Catholic Church. (Catholic.org)
There are some differences between the Western and Eastern Rite Churches, as they are known. The biggest difference is the external appearance of the liturgy and Mass. The most well-known Eastern Rite Church here in Columbus is St. John Chrysostom on Cleveland Avenue.
St. Vincent de Paul Meeting will be on Tuesday, April 10th, at 7:00 p.m., in the parish rectory.

Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. The Second Sunday of Easter is designated as Divine Mercy Sunday throughout the Catholic World. St Catharine of Sienna Church, at 500 S. Gould Road in Columbus, has been designated as the “Station Church” for the east side of the
city of Columbus. Beginning at 2:00 p.m. today, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place, the Rosary will be prayed, and the Sacrament of Penance will be offered. At 3:00 p.m., the Divine Mercy Chaplet will be prayed, led by a soloist. Benediction is at 3:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend.
Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land: Thank you for your generosity to the Pontifical Collection for the Christians in the Holy Land, taken up every year on Good Friday. This year’s total for both parishes is as follows:
St. Philip the Apostle $ 569Holy Spirit $ 822Total $1,391
Collection in Central and Eastern Europe: Next week is the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection supports the Church in over 25 countries that are still struggling to recover in the aftermath of communist rule. Funds from this collection support pastoral care, catechesis, building renovations, and seminary formation. Your support restores the Church and builds the future in this region. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the collection next week. Envelopes are in your packets.
Mission Coop Appeal, 2018. On the weekend of April 21st and 22nd, St. Philip the Apostle and Holy Spirit
Parishes will host the Piarist Fathers, “Order of the Pious Schools,” as our mission appeal for 2018.
Fr. Thomas R. Carroll, Sch.P., will be coming to our Churches on that weekend from a small town in Eastern Kentucky, Hager Hill, which lies in the rural, eastern part of the state.
There in Hager Hill, the Piarists run a small high school, providing a top quality education in the heart of rural, impoverished Kentucky. Your generous support in the second collection that weekend will help them keep the school, which was first opened in 1991, open and operating. Your generous dollars will stay here, close to home, in Appalachia, to help your fellow citizens get a good education.
Please welcome Fr. Carroll and be as generous as you can be. Watch this space, more information coming. Please be generous.
Catholic Conference of Ohio: Curbing Gun Violence. The Catholic Bishops of Ohio call upon Ohio’s elected leaders to adopt prudent policies to help curb gun violence. Now is the time for action. Now is the time to promote the “culture of life.”
“We (the Bishops of the State of Ohio) urge open and civil discourse that will result in the enactment of bipartisan reforms. We pray that Ohio’s leaders will set aside political agendas and achieve solutions that promote the common good and safety of all people. We believe just solutions can be found that will not violate the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.”
The U.S. Catholic Bishops have added: “Violence in our society will not be solved by a single piece of legislation, and many factors contribute to what we see going on all around us. Even so, our leaders must engage in a real debate about needed measures to save lives and make our communities safer.”
The U.S. Catholic Bishops encourage the enactment of sensible regulations addressing the culture of violence in our country.
