This Month in the

Learning Commons

World Book Day! Earth Day April 23rd is World Book Day, and we are hoping to celebrate this occasion with a small celebration of our reading successes in the Learning Commons! Congratulations to all of the students who have stuck to their book club commitment and continue to read and review books to be able to vote for Canada’s best books of 2017 through the Forest of Reading program. Voting will take place at Parkland in the next few weeks!!!

...How will you choose to make a

difference? Join us in the Learning Commons this month as we explore and celebrate the spring season and learn more about how we can be kind to the earth. Here are some resources worth exploring at home:

resources about earth day Ecokids

Spring is here! It is starting to feel like spring, and we are celebrating the season in the Learning Commons! Check out the excerpt below from Almanac.com for interesting information about how we determine when spring is supposed to happen and why: http://www.almanac.com/content/first-day-spring-vernal-equinox

We continue to feature spring selections, including picture books and non-fiction texts on topics that include: weather and seasons, rainbows, plants, baby animals, worms, gardens, and new growth.

World Autism Awareness Day falls at the beginning of April each year. In addition to our other displays, this month in the Commons, we are celebrating differences and encouraging understanding of one another with a variety of resources and displays for students and staff.

Egg-stravaganza Easter falls on April 16th this year. It is considered the most important religious holiday for Christians. In the Christian faith, Good Friday and Easter Sunday commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter is the second most popular holiday after Christmas. Did you know …eggs became a symbol of Easter because they represent new life? … the word "breakfast" originates from "breaking the fast" after a 40 day lent period preceding Easter? …chocolate sales in Canada are expected to reach $3.2 billion by 2019?! This month we have lots of egg activities set out, not only to celebrate Easter, but also to do some learning before our baby chicks arrive later this month!
