Victoria’s magnificent national parksVictoria’s national parks are a diverse range of natural treasures of nationwide significance because of their outstanding natural values and cultural heritage. Come and enjoy being surrounded by this spectacular natural environment and its abundance of native wildlife with a host of activities including camping, horse riding, interpretive tours, white water rafting, bushwalking, bike riding and scenic drives.

1 Port Campbell National Park

World famous for its extraordinary collection of wave-sculpted rock formations, especially the Twelve Apostles, a group of dramatic rock stacks that stand like sentinels defying the surging seas. Other highlights include Loch Ard Gorge – site of a 19th century shipwreck, as well as the Grotto, Gibson Steps, the Arch and London Bridge.

2 Great Otway National Park

Following the spectacular path of the Great Ocean Road, the Great Otway National Park stretches all the way from Torquay through to Princetown and up through the Otways Hinterland towards Colac. The coastal margins of the park encompass rugged coastlines, sandy beaches, diverse rock platforms and windswept heathland. Steep forested ridges, deep valleys of tall forest, fern-clad gullies embracing magnificent waterfalls, tranquil lakes and inland plains can be found to the north. Enjoy Maits Rest Rainforest Walk, Cape Otway Lightstation, the oldest surviving lighthouse on the Australian mainland, or experience part or all of the 104km Great Ocean Walk.

3 Grampians National Park

Rising abruptly from the surrounding western plains, the Grampians is a series of rugged sandstone mountain ranges clad with forests and rich in wildlife. One of Victoria’s most popular holiday destinations, the park is an outstanding venue for camping, climbing, scenic drives, bushwalking and nature study. Aboriginal occupation of the Grampians dates back thousands of years and the area contains several important Aboriginal rock art sites.

4 Yarra Ranges National Park

Cradling the Yarra River headwaters and much of Melbourne’s water catchment, the park is dominated by majestic Mountain Ash trees. Scenic drives and walks lead through fern gullies, past cascading waterfalls and to breathtaking lookouts. Visit the Rainforest Gallery with its spectacular observation platform and rainforest walkway on the southern slopes of Mount Donna Buang.

5 Dandenong Ranges National Park

Protecting the remaining tall forests of the Dandenongs, this park is particularly well known for its spectacular Mountain Ash trees and lush fern gullies, and is ideal for relaxing picnics and tranquil forest walks. The cool mountain elevation affords panoramic views, and there is abundant native birdlife, including Crimson Rosellas, Kookaburras and the Superb Lyrebird, with its amazing gift for mimicry.

6 Wilsons Promontory National Park

‘The Prom’ (as Wilsons Promontory is affectionately known) is one of Victoria’s most-loved places. The southernmost tip of mainland Australia, it is scenically spectacular and has very high conservation values. Huge granite mountains form a dramatic backdrop to areas of open forest, rainforest and fern gullies, sweeping beaches and coastlines. Great bushwalks extend from under an hour to over three days. Visitors can camp or caravan at Tidal River where there is an Information Centre and shop, or stay in cabins, lodges or the Wilderness Retreats.

7 Croajingolong National Park

Named after the Aboriginal people of the area, Croajingolong follows the wild and unspoilt far eastern coastline of Victoria for 100km, and features eucalypt forest, rainforest and heathland with many rare and threatened species. Secluded coastal camping areas are a perfect base for short or long beach walks, birdwatching, boating and fishing.

8 Mornington Peninsula and Point Nepean national parks

Mornington Peninsula is a wonderful blend of outstanding natural scenery and fascinating historic features. It is very popular for swimming, walking, picnics and nature study, as well as surfing at ocean beaches like Portsea, Sorrento and Gunnamatta. Visit the historic Cape Schanck Lightstation, still operating as it has since the mid 1800’s. Point Nepean has historic fortifications to explore, such as tunnels and gun emplacements, as well as coastal woodland and splendid seascapes. South Channel Fort was built in 1888 to guard against enemy ships.

9 Alpine National Park

Victoria’s largest national park stretches from central Gippsland all the way to the NSW border, where it adjoins Kosciusko National Park. Within the park are some of Australia’s most stunning alpine landscapes, including mountain peaks, sudden escarpments and gentle, grassy high plains. There is a wide range of recreational opportunities from cross country skiing, downhill skiing at adjoining resorts, camping, canoeing, four-wheel driving and horse riding.

10 Mount Buffalo National Park

Established in 1898, Mount Buffalo is a classic national park and an all-season playground. The majestic plateau, dominated by massive granite outcrops, has over 90km of walking tracks, panoramic scenery, waterfalls and scope for adventurous pursuits such as rock climbing.

Marine national parks and sanctuaries

The waters along Australia’s southern coast are unique, with inspiring landscapes and rich flora and fauna. Approximately 90% of the plants and animals are found nowhere else on Earth. As well as protecting the marine environment, they offer wonderful tourism and recreational opportunities, including diving and snorkelling, swimming, boating, nature study and sightseeing. They are ideal places to learn about marine creatures and their habitats, both along shore and under the water.

2 Great Ocean Walk

The Great Ocean Walk is Victoria’s premier long distance walk, stretching from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles. Each day of the walk is different and unique, as nature’s drama unfolds at every step. Walkers can choose to tackle the entire 104km experience, or choose from the many shorter walk options, including day walks, by ‘stepping-on’ and ‘stepping-off’ the trail at different sections. Walkers can either camp along trail at the purpose built hiker camps, or those preferring a higher level of comfort can leave the trail for the night and stay with one of the many nearby accommodation providers. Guided walk and transport services are also available.

www.greatoceanwalk.com.au

Victoria is fast becoming a premier hiking destination with the continued development of the four long-distance walks under the Walk Victoria’s Icons brand. These four walk experiences were selected to showcase the iconic landscapes of Victoria, including the southern ocean’s dramatic coastline, the rugged sandstone peaks of Gariwerd, and pristine alpine scenery. The Great Ocean Walk is the most developed of the four walks, and has been inspiring visitors for over ten years. The recently opened first section of The Grampians Peaks Trail offers a new experience, showcasing the beauty and majesty of Gariwerd’s natural and cultural landscapes. The Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing and the Coastal Wilderness Walk in East Gippsland are both emerging experiences.

3 Grampians Peaks Trail

Be inspired by the spectacular outlook of rugged mountain peaks from the top of Mount Rosea, panoramic views from the Pinnacle Lookout, ancient rock features of the Grand Canyon and the rich cultural history of this truly iconic Grampians landscape. The first section of the Grampians Peaks Trail is now complete and offers a 36 kilometre, 3 day/2 night circuit walk departing from Halls Gap. On the first night, hikers can camp at the Bugiga hiker camp, a distinctive, high-quality, sustainable campsite, exclusive to the Grampians Peaks Trail. Walk operators also offer packaged and supported experiences utilising off walk accommodation. This walk is the first stage of a larger project to create a 13 day/12 night world-class multi day walk which will span the length of the Grampians National Park.

4 EX-HMAS Canberra

The ex-HMAS Canberra is a dive site located offshore from Ocean Grove within the Bass Strait in Victoria and is approximately 25 minutes by boat from Queenscliff Harbour (on the Bellarine Peninsula) or Portsea (on the Mornington Peninsula).

Lying under approximately 28 metres of water, the wreck provides spectacular diving for experienced divers wanting a challenging and unique experience.

Divers have the opportunity to explore many sections of the ship including flight decks, the bridge, engine rooms, galley, and accommodation quarters. Many of the vessel’s original fixtures and fittings have been preserved.

5 Werribee Mansion

This imposing Italianate tower-mansion built in the 1870’s is the remnant of a family pastoral empire and a style of grand living that flourished briefly in Australia. Experience the elegance of the authentically restored mansion, with its ornate crystal chandeliers, giant gilt-framed mirrors and imposing main staircase, with the help of guides and an audio tour. Much of the building is open to visitors including the reception rooms, main bedrooms, billiard room and kitchen wing. The adjoining Victoria State Rose Garden displays over 4,500 roses and is particularly spectacular from November to May.

6 Great Gardens of the Dandenongs & William Ricketts Sanctuary

Tucked into the hillside and just a short drive east of Melbourne lie the Great Gardens of the Dandenongs. These unique gardens have breathtaking views of the surrounding blue ranges and are framed by towering Mountain Ash. Seasonal changes ensure these treasured gardens are an all-year-round delight. William Ricketts Sanctuary is a place of beauty and tranquillity due to both the natural setting and the mystical kiln-fired clay sculptures half hidden among the rock, ferns and tall Mountain Ash. The spirit of the land is explored in 92 ceramic sculptures of people and animals which merge with the natural surroundings. The sanctuary reflects a spirit of place and many visitors travel across the world to visit time and time again.

7 Naturewise Eco Escapes
