From the Gush Rav Moshe Taragin Tzav – Upper Limits There are rare and dramatic moments in history in which it becomes clear to humanity
that we have reached the upper limits of technology and can proceed no further. G-d
desires that we decipher our world, as well as improve it and thereby advance the human
condition. However, periodically He reasserts the limits of human achievement. When
religious people live through these moments, we more deeply appreciate the superiority of
G-d and we more readily submit to His authority. The Corona crisis is such a moment in
history; for religious-minded people it should evoke awe and ‘surrender’ the combination
of which yields yirat shamayim.
Typically, we reach our upper limits because we encounter a phenomenon which we
can’t interpret or understand. Bowing to the limits of human intelligence, we
acknowledge the difference between G-d and man. As Yeshaya (55) stresses, “Ki lo
machshevotai machsevoteichem” - My thoughts aren’t even similar to your thoughts. The
difference between human knowledge and Divine wisdom isn’t quantitative; the process of
our thinking is completely dissimilar to Divine Wisdom. We aren’t even on the same
playing field!
Perhaps the phrase which best captures this type of submission appears in Tehillim (92)–
which according to Chazal was first recited by Adam when viewing Nature. He was so
overwhelmed by the infinite wisdom on display that he exclaimed “ Mah gadlu ma’asecha
Hashem’ - how magnificent are Your creations. Marveling at the splendor of creation, this
exclamation conveys inadequacy of human intellect. Subsequently, in this very chapter, a
very different issue is broached: the reality of evil in G-d’s world– another matter which
defies human comprehension. Whether viewing a natural world we can’t grasp or a moral
system which disturbs our sense of right and wrong, we reach the same conclusion: the
ways of G-d are beyond the mind of man; humbled by our limits we submit to a Higher
Being.
Interestingly, our struggle with the current pandemic has a very different feel to it.
Medieval people, suffering through the black plague had no clue about the origins of their
pandemic, the manner of contagion, nor possessed any scientific strategy for medical
response. Likewise, it took humanity close to twenty years to trace the cholera outbreak
of the 19th century to rancid water. These pandemics remained elusive to the human
imagination and created a sense of “mah Gadlu”- G-d’s world resided beyond human
comprehension.
Our current corona situation is very different. We know exactly what causes Covid-19, we
can dissect this virus down to its DNA makeup and, most importantly we know exactly
how to treat this flu-like epidemic. We are limited not by our inability to understand
this phenomenon but by the sheer volume of contagion and the sheer volume of
resources necessary to simultaneously combat this illness for the volumes of
patients who are infected. Society would be fully capable of mounting an effective
response if an average number of people had contracted this virus. However, the numbers
are overwhelming, and we don’t possess the resources to adequately combat this epidemic.
This is a very different encounter with the superior wisdom of G-d. We understand His
workings but stand amazed at the vastness of His creation and the manner in which that
vastness is managed and balanced. It is the “size” of this epidemic which lies beyond
human reach and we are humbled by G-d’s sweep and His ability to balance the
overwhelming mass and size of creation. Perhaps the verse which best captures this
moment of awe isn’t ‘Mah gadlu ma’asecha Hashem’ but instead ‘Mah rabu ma’asecha
Hashem’- how vast are Your creations, This latter verse appears in Tehilim chapter 104
(known as Barchi Nafshi)- a chapter which details the vastness of creation and the manner
in which they interlock and are harmonized. Corona virus feels more like a moment of
Mah Rabu and not just Mah Gadlu!
This moment comes on the heels of prodigious human efforts to ‘manage volume”. The
past 150 years has witnessed ambitious urbanization- developing concentrated population
centers. We thought that the science of statistics would enable our management of these
urban sprawls of humanity. Statistics predict trends to help determine the allocation and
distribution of limited human resources. How much money should be spent on medical
preparedness as opposed to sanitation, transportation or culture? Our statistics worked
well-until they didn’t; our statistics didn’t predict these levels of medical needs! G -d
reminded us that though we may have cracked some of the code of science we haven’t
fully achieved the ability to manage vast volumes. We thought we had those tools, but we
have now discovered that we didn’t. A religious person steps away and marvels at G-d not
just when he fails to comprehend our world but also when he senses the vastness of
creation and the manner in which G-d manages and balances the entire sweep of His
world.
Prayers for refu’ah for all ill people across the globe.
Yavneh baBayit has been running successfully since its first day, Wednesday 25 March, and is rapidly becoming the “new normal” for everyone. Teachers, students and parents are working in close partnership to ensure success.
“Normally, each school day at Yavneh starts with Tefillah. To the credit of our amazing students this tradition has continued online. Each morning during “Tefillah baBayit” different members of the Yavneh family share ideas to inspire our students Tefillot. This is then followed by time to daven together even though we are physically apart. Tefillah baBayit has been a meaningful way for our students to stay connected during this challenging time”. Hona Dodge – Jewish Life The Primary School have been using Seesaw as their main teaching and learning platform, and the feedback from parents has been overwhelmingly positive.
The daily schedule follows the regular timetable and students are supported remotely by their teachers, starting from Tefilla in the morning. One way that teachers are providing support is through creating short videos to accompany learning tasks and are sending a daily email to parents outlining the learning intentions for the next day. Teachers are also available to provide further clarification for students and parents via email and phone. “Our aim is to maximise learning and to support well-being during this unusual time in which we find ourselves. We are off to a great start and I am grateful to our teachers, students and parents for their daily dedication” Hailey Joubert – Head of Primary The Secondary School have been going full steam ahead with their remote learning on Microsoft Teams. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our teachers, our students’ positive attitudes and the support from the parent body that we are able to continue on with effective and meaningful learning for every class. Both students and teachers have given their feedback.
“Yavneh has done an incredible job of making the best of a hard situation and ensuring that learning continues. I’m filled with confidence that despite the challenges posed to myself, all Yavneh students, teachers and staff, we will get through this difficult time together and our learning will stay on track." – Teya Bierenkrant, Year 12 “Just finished my class with Year 9. It was great and they were amazing. So proud of them” Brent Goldstein, Secondary Teacher
“Year 11 Psychology class maintained their high standard of conversation in our online lesson, without talking over each other. They are all legends!” Kim Bruce, Secondary Teacher
“Just had a truly incredible class. Year 12 are on it!” Ahuva Tsykin, Secondary JS “Both Rabbi Cowen and Mrs Segman stressed the vital nature of community in the current climate, starting not only my but a plethora of other students’ days off with a bang”. Yossi Bart, Year 10 In these uncertain times the consistency of the daily routine; Tefilla, Jewish Studies and General Studies provides a stable and safe platform for our students. They feel enriched, connected with each other and engaged with their teachers. We look forward to a safe and peaceful Pesach and a return to normality.

Mizrachi Organisation בס"ד
2 April 2020
Postponement of Annual General Meeting
The Mizrachi Executive and the Committee have resolved to post-pone the AGM until the restrictions relating to social distancing and the size of gatherings are removed. This notice is the formal advice to members of the postponement of the Mizrachi Organisation 2020 AGM. I will send out a new notice to reschedule the AGM as soon as prac-ticable after the lifting of the restrictions. With best wishes for a refuah shlema to those who are unwell and for a Chag Kasher Sameach to all. David Lindell Honorary Secretary Mizrachi Organisation
Adar 5780 Dear Friends, As we begin to prepare ourselves for the chag of Pesach it is important to remember the needs of those less fortunate and ensure that they have the means to celebrate the chag as intended. The Maot Chitim Fund is designed to facilitate this on a practical level and provide every member of our wider community with the necessary provisions to celebrate the upcoming chag. Throughout the year the Mizrachi Charity Fund (MCF) is committed to providing members of our extended community with the necessary support to ensure that they are able to provide for their families adequately. The need is constant and the requests endless. Unfortunately, there is an increasing number of families within the community that rely on our support in order to manage their financial burden. The range of support we offer is diverse and we are committed to finding the most beneficial form of support for each individual case. *Rivka recently approached MCF in a desperate state. She was heavily pregnant and had just arrived in Melbourne when her husband suffered a serious accident which would require a long period of recovery. Her husband was not an Australian citizen and was not eligible to any form of Government support. The couple were not covered by health insurance and faced the reality of a new baby, extensive medical bills from the accident and no income. Rivka had no family support and no established social networks to rely upon. Rivka was suffering from extreme stress and anxiety at the prospect of giving birth to a child without any form of stability in their lives. *Lea recently fled an emotionally abusive relationship with her two young children and had nowhere to go. She spent weeks moving between various friends in order to have a roof over her head. Lea struggles with various medical issues which makes finding any type of employment very difficult. She was desperately trying to find appropriate housing but with no income Lea is struggling to provide her children with basic needs for survival. Rivka and Lea and their families are just two examples of families who turned to Mizrachi Charity for assistance when they found themselves so vulnerable. We receive requests from families within our community and beyond. The most alarming feature is that many of these requests are coming from families that are deeply integrated in our close-knit community. The need is literally on our doorstep and it is something that we cannot ignore. We are pleased to be able to assist those families that seek our support and the only hurdle we face is having limited funds which restricts our ability to assist to the full extent required. We are completely reliant on the support of our generous community which ensures that we sustain our record of distributing approximately $180,000 a year to those who find themselves hungry, homeless, jobless and with few avenues of support. Every month, funds are disbursed to provide food vouchers, rental assistance, medical assistance, payment of utilities and occasionally, financial support in order to retrain or re-educate an individual so that they can return to the workforce. We hope to do more of this. As Pesach approaches and we busy ourselves in preparation of this forthcoming Yom Tov, please consider those families whose added challenges can be alleviated by our thoughtful assistance. We are so grateful for your continued support and are delighted to advise that donations can now be made online by clicking on our website charity.mizrachi.com.au Wishing you all a Pesach Kasher V’Sameach Warm regards,
Karen Franks Mizrachi Charity Fund Executive Director *Names have been substituted

This sale must be in strict accordance with Jewish law and is therefore conducted by a Rabbi well-versed in the particular requirements necessary. B'dikat Chametz (“Searching for the Chametz”) takes place TUESDAY EVENING, 7 APRIL, 2020. The formal sale of Chametz to a non-Jew takes place mid-morning of WEDNESDAY, 8 APRIL, 2020. The Rabbi should be empowered to sell the Chametz well before this time. Please note the procedure for the sale of Chametz: 1. The Rabbi is appointed as an agent of the seller of the Chametz to sell it to a non-Jew. The areas where the Chametz is stored
are also leased to the non-Jew and Chametz being sold should therefore be stored in an appropriately segregated area. The non-Jew must be granted free access to the Chametz he purchases.
2. This procedure is a bona fide sale in accord with Talmudic and secular law. 3. It is prohibited to derive any benefit from Chametz which has been kept in possession of a Jew during Pesach. Therefore, care
should be taken to obtain Chametz after Pesach from someone who has sold his Chametz prior to Pesach. If in doubt in a particular case, one should delay before buying from the Jew until one is reasonably certain that a new stock of Chametz has been acquired.
4. Should one receive or even inadvertently acquire Chametz or find Chametz in one’s premises during Chol Hamoed, the Chametz should be burned (or destroyed). If received or found on Yom Tov, then handling it is prohibited since it is muktzeh. One should cover it with a vessel until the end of Yom Tov and then burn it.
