PARSHAT VAYECHI - פרשת ויחיThe opening line of this week’s parasha, י נְ ש֙ בֹ קֲ עַ י־י מְ י יִ הְ יַ ה ו נ ה ש רְ שֶ ע עַ בְ ם שִ יַ רְ צִ ץ מֶ רֶ אְ ב֙ בֹ קֲ עַ י יִ חְ יַ ו ה׃ נ ת שַ אְ מ יםִ ע בְ רַ אְ ים ו ִ נ ע שַ בֶ יו ש יַ ח-- Jacob lived seventeen years in the land of Egypt, so that the span of Jacob’s life came to one hundred and forty seven years (Genesis 47:28) exemplifies the Scriptural technique that introduces the death of a righteous person by speaking in the positive language of ‘life’ (חי)...[see also חיי שרה--The life of Sarah - as another example]. In doing so, our tradition emphasizes that the departed righteous person’s actions and creations remain alive for future generations. The inheritance they leave behind becomes the treasure chest that influences our culture, it is the substance that nurtures us and influences our future. In death, the righteous remain alive.
