Be Vigilant at All Times – As the Advent season begins we look forward to the coming of Christ. This anticipation has two meanings as we await our Savior. First, as we set up our manger scenes we are keenly aware that the celebration of the birth of Christ will soon be upon us. The coming of Christ as one like us in all things but sin is a source of great hope as we recognize how our fallen humanity was raised to a new dignity as Jesus took on flesh. At the same time, we anticipate his coming again in glory so that we
might share fully in the salvation he won for us. Jesus promises to return and call us back to himself that we might live with him for ever. While we are attentive to all that the birth of Christ means for us as his followers, we are called to be vigilant in regards to his coming again so that we might not be caught off guard. We may try to convince ourselves that we can be attentive later, but in reality, there is no better time than the present to turn our eyes, ears and hearts to the things of God so that we might hear his voice and see his works inviting us now to be one with him. This relationship with the Lord also allows us to know his will and his ways and it inspires us to follow the path he has set for us. How is the Lord inviting us in our parishes and parish groupings to be vigilant to the presence of Christ in our midst and the needs of others so that many of us can be prepared for his coming again? FROM OUR ADMINISTRATOR
People, look East. The time is near of the crowning of the year.
Make your house fair as you are able. Trim the hearth and set the table..
Today, December 2, begins our new liturgical year, launched by Advent, 2018. In our communal
prayer today, in the Collect, the prayer early in the Mass that starts us on our Advent journey, the
celebrant asks God to grant us ‘the resolve to run forth to meet Christ with righteous deeds’. Are
you resolved…or do you need more ‘resolve’? Are you running forth to meet Christ…or do you need
to step up your pace? What about your ‘righteous deeds’? As we examine our everyday actions,
decisions, behaviors, during this holiday season, our good deeds can be virtuous, or not; moral, or
lacking in integrity; honorable or less than respectful. The holiday ‘rush’, and the pressures and
stresses that often accompany this season, can be invitations to positive – or negative – deeds on
our part. Our opportunities of interaction and involvement with those with whom we work closely, or
with whom we live - those whom Christ would call our ‘neighbor’ - may be being given to us by our
Providential God in order for us to practice our righteous deeds, our good works. You know how this
goes: you pray for patience, and suddenly you are ‘gifted’ with many chances to practice
patience! Regardless of whether we actually like to do righteous deeds or not, this particular
Collect points to our being resolved to run forth to meet Christ with righteous deeds so that we may
be worthy to possess the heavenly kingdom. Hmmm! It seems this may be, for some of us, a
prescription for how to do our Advent this year, remembering that the ‘meeting Christ’ is not just
about meeting him on Christmas Day, but also about meeting him at the end of our preordained
time here on planet earth! Maybe this is what is meant by the phrase ‘practicing our faith’!
P.S. One of the purposes of the Collect is to ensure that we, the faithful, who come together as one
to worship and pray, actually establish communion with each other and God. The General
Instruction of the Roman Missal tells us that “The people, joining in this petition, make the prayer their
own by means of the acclamation Amen”. Most of us did join together to communally assent to this
particular Collect by our “Amen”. So we aren’t alone in this! Let’s communally help each other to
live it out.
People, look East and sing today:
Love, the Guest, is on the way.
“The question is: Is the humanity of our time still waiting for a Savior? One has the feeling that many consider
God as foreign to their own interests. Apparently, they do not need him. They live as though he did not exist
and, worse still, as though he were an “obstacle” to remove in order to fulfill themselves. Even among
believers—we are sure of it—some let themselves be attracted by enticing dreams and distracted by misleading
doctrines that suggest deceptive shortcuts to happiness.”
---Pope Benedict XVI, General Audience December 20, 2006

please review your pledge card to determine how soon you are responsible to complete your pledge. Please note that if you wish to

The Mass schedule for the Christmas solemnity is heavily based on the count made at each of the churches last Christmas. Those numbers are printed here. Besides the number of attendees, parking and seating capacity, the availability of musicians was kept in mind. Additionally, the diocese expects 50% capacity for each scheduled mass and the size of our buildings varies greatly. As with the INTERIM weekend schedule, this schedule will also be a trial run. Chances are good that it will not be the same next year. The priests are restricted to three masses (including the evening anticipated). Given the number of priests available this year, the schedule is as shown above. I am aware that not everyone will be content. It is necessary to remember that in the coming years there will be fewer priests available. Please note that each of the parishes has maintained at least two of their former schedule.

OPLATKI Oplatki is now available after all weekend Masses or at the Parish Office, Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., for $3/package. Oplatki, pronounced o-pwaht-kee, is a Christmas tradition that originated in Poland. The word Oplatki means “Angel Bread”. There are 3 white wafers and 1 pink wafer, imprinted with beautiful Christmas images, in each package. The white are to be used by the humans in the family and the pink are for the family pet(s). People from all nationalities have come to love this tradition. Just before the Christmas Eve meal, the entire family gathers to share the oplatki. Usually the eldest member will begin by breaking off a piece of the wafer and giving it to another family member along with a wish for good health, happiness, etc., whatever good blessing they desire for that person to receive. This continues from person to person until all have received a blessing and a piece of the wafer. You then can do the same with the family pet(s). Take a piece of the pink wafer for each pet and give it to them along with a blessing. Pets are remembered because of the animals that were present in the stable to greet the “Christ Child” on the “First Holy Night”.
So pick up a package, or two, for your family/friends and share this popular tradition with them. —-Sandra Santillo

HOLY HOUR — FIRST FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2018 In a continuing effort to minister to the spiritual growth of the people of God, and to accommodate as many people as possible, our Holy Hours will begin to be prayed monthly on First Fridays at 11:00 a.m., with Benediction just prior to the Noon Mass. First Friday Devotions especially recognize the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and offer reparation for sins. Several promises were made to people who practice First Friday Devotions, through St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 17th century, including final perseverance. Those promises still hold true in our day and age. Please come and join us in First Friday Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction as a way of honoring Jesus for the sacrifice he made for us on a Friday.

OPERATION SHOE BOX Heartfelt thanks to St. Margaret of Scotland, Sts. Simon & Jude and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parishioners, Ladies of Charity, and most especially the students, parents and staff of St. Margaret of Scotland School and CCD program. The students collected an overwhelming amount of warm socks and monetary donations for the homeless. With the generous giving of physical items and money of so many kind hearted parishioners, students and parents the St. Vincent DePaul Society conferences from the three parishes packed 287 shoe boxes. With the monetary donations cold weather items such as warm gloves, caps, scarfs, etc. were purchased to insure each box met the needs of the homeless. The kindness of each donor made a less fortunate person feel the uplifting love and joy in the true spirit of Christmas. Thank you again from the St. Vincent DePaul Society conferences of St. Margaret of Scotland, Sts. Simon & Jude, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parishes.
