The Holy Family – The bible tells us very little about the family life of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as they formed their home in Nazareth. We know that Jesus was presented in the temple in accordance with the custom of the law, that he grew strong and was filled with wisdom, and that he stayed behind at the temple in Jerusalem to discourse with the elders and scholars of the law. Much else is left to the tradition of our faith and to our imagination. The Holy Family was certainly unconventional, composed of a virgin mother, a child
conceived by the Holy Spirit who is the Son of God, and a foster father who loved the child as if he was his own. Yet, we hold them up as the example of family life for us who seek to love those God has placed in our lives. The Holy Family also becomes our inspiration as we form a family of faith in our parishes and parish groupings. While our faith communities undergo change as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, the work of building up the family of the Church continues in earnest. May the example and intercession of the Holy Family support us in this important work. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
FIFTH SUNDAY COLLECTION TODAY! Perhaps one of the best gifts we can give to the Christ child at Christmas to celebrate his coming to us in poverty is a gift to our St. Vincent de Paul conference to help those in need. This month we have a 5th Sunday, which is one of the best means of regularly reminding us that it is our privilege to be a part of being Christ to others. Our SVdP conference members thank you for helping us help others, and wish you a Blessed Christmas.
Rejoice, O heavens, and exult, O earth, for our Lord will come to show mercy to his poor. ~ Isaiah 49:13

Feast of the Holy Family Collect:
“O God, who were pleased to give us the shining example of the Holy Family, graciously grant that
we may imitate them in practicing the virtues of family life and in the bonds of charity...”
A family is more than just people related to each other. It’s people sharing memories and hopes,
cares and concerns. A family is people who are there for each other.
We are part of a limitless family if we allow ourselves to see all of life as holy, all of life as one. All of life
is one, holy family. Imagine the decisions we would make if this is how we really saw all of creation?
It seems to me that the Church got it right by asking us to reflect on the Holy Family as we begin a
new year. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph began their life together among animals who made room for
them in their stable home. They were kept company by shepherds who they had never before met.
Strangers from other lands brought them gifts.
There is a New Year’s Resolution to be had here … and a prayer:
Ancient One, who makes all things new, may we receive with gentleness and touch with hopefulness
and protect with fierceness and love with tenderness; and may we celebrate with gratefulness and
welcome with humbleness and tend with gracefulness all that you give into our care. —Jan Richardson, Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods spsmw.org
Why not let one of your New Year’s Resolutions be directed toward some additional partaking on your
part in the life of our Parish Grouping 210 family?
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, pray for us!
HEARTS SPEAK TO HEARTS
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION We continue to offer teachings of the Deposit of Faith: the traditions and scriptures of the Catholic Church through the R.C.I. process. Invite your family, friends, neighbors who are questioning the Catholic Faith. Sessions are held on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Our faithful parish team look forward to these many opportunities for discussions. Call the RCIA office 412-276-1011 ext. 225 or email [email protected] for your chance to become a part of this inquiring group!
As we begin a New Year in the Lord, 2019, Father Alek, Fr. Robin, Fr. Jerome and I offer our best wishes and a remembrance of you in our prayers. May the coming days be filled with God’s grace and may your response to that Life make you happy, peace-filled and holy. As I visited the three churches that make up our grouping, I was amazed at the extensive decorating that took
place to enhance our holy places. Thanks so very much to all who had a hand in making the churches so beautiful
for the Christmas holydays.

Earphones are required and are available, but you are also welcome to bring your own. Please be sure to return your device at the end of Mass!
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION FOR ADULT CATHOLICS Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist are the three sacraments for initiation into the Catholic faith. Some adults have been steadily growing in faith and are practicing Catholics, but have simply missed the opportunity to be confirmed. Without all three sacraments, one cannot be verified as a godparent, or sponsor another into the Catholic Church. Since the Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated for our area in the spring, we are offering sessions of preparation for adults and older teens in the beginning of 2019. The dates for the preparation sessions will be planned according to the need of participants. Please call the RCIA office at 412-276-1011, ext. 225, or email [email protected] to apply or for more information.

EPIPHANY CAKE
Come join us for a Sunday Social at St. Margaret of Scotland, to celebrate Epiphany. On Epiphany we recall that the Christ Child, who had been somewhat hidden from society, becomes revealed to the Magi. There is a custom of serving King Cake on Epiphany, to see who discovers a hidden token of the Christ Child in his or her piece of cake. The members of the St. Margaret Choir are preparing a delicious array of cakes for your enjoyment. Come join us after the 10:30 Mass next Sunday, January 6, in the school cafeteria, and see if your piece of Epiphany cake holds the lucky token.
