He didn't just "go along with" His Father, He wholeheartedly sub- Dear Ministers of Jesus Christ, Have you ever considered just what comprises unity? We know that God is the ultimate source of unity and we can have that unity in us through His Holy Spirit. But how is unity expressed in us? Jesus Christ prayed on the evening before His death that His Father's Church would be m, even as He and His Father were one. He prayed to the Father that the Church would be one 'in us' (John 17:21-22). That is, the Church is to be in complete oneness, or unity, with Jesus and the Father who are themselves in perfect unity. But how are they unified? Jesus told His apostles in John 15:l-7 that if we abide or live in Him we can bear fruit. He compared us to branches on a vine. Unless we are part of the vine, abiding in Christ and He in US, we are worthless, unable to bear fruit, drying up, ready for the fire. He tells us that without Him we can do nothing (verse 5). Now notice verses 9 and 10: "As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, y e s h a l l abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his 1ov.e." Jesus makes it clear that we must keep His commandments if we are to abide in Him. He makes it clear i n Matthew 5:17-48 and elsewhere that the keeping of His commandments must be more than just the physical actions of keeping them. It must be in the heart. It must be a way of life--not only a way of doing, but also a way of thinkinq. The apostle Paul told us to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ (I1 Corinthians 10:4-5). That has to do with obeying God, keeping His commandments in our hearts, not only in our actions, though it certainly includes our actions. Proverbs 3:l s a y s , "My son, forget not my law, but let thine heart keep my commandments.' Notice it says 'let thine heart keep my commandments." The unity that we are to have with God and with one another through His Spirit, which is based upon keeping His law in our hearts, must be more than just actions1 This unity, like God's law, must become a part of =--part of our very nature. mandments. - H e s ays H e spoke no t H i s own words b u t H i s Fa the r ' s . H e d i d n ' t j u s t "go along w i t h " H i s Father, H e wholeheartedly sub-

Dear Min i s t e r s of Jesus C h r i s t ,

Have you ever considered j u s t what comprises uni ty? We know t h a t God is t h e u l t i m a t e source of u n i t y and w e can have t h a t u n i t y i n u s through H i s Holy S p i r i t . B u t how is u n i t y expressed i n us?

Jesus C h r i s t prayed on t h e evening before H i s dea th t h a t H i s F a t h e r ' s Church would be m, even as H e and H i s Fa ther were one. H e prayed t o t h e Father t h a t t h e Church would be one ' in us' (John 17:21-22). That is, t h e Church is t o be i n complete oneness, or un i ty , with Jesus and t h e Fa ther who are themselves i n perfect un i ty . But how are they u n i f i e d ?

Jesus t o l d H i s a p o s t l e s i n John 15:l-7 tha t i f we abide or l i v e i n H i m w e can bear f r u i t . H e compared u s t o branches on a vine. Unless w e are p a r t of t h e v ine , ab id ing i n C h r i s t and H e i n US, w e are wor th l e s s , unable t o bear f r u i t , d ry ing up, ready f o r t h e f i re . H e t e l l s u s t h a t without H i m we can do nothing ( v e r s e 5 ) . Now n o t i c e ve r ses 9 and 10 : "As t h e Father ha th loved m e , so have I loved you: cont inue ye i n my love. I f ye keep my commandments, ye s h a l l abide i n my love ; even as I have kept my F a t h e r ' s commandments, and abide i n h i s 1ov.e."

Jesus makes it clear t h a t w e must keep H i s commandments i f w e are t o abide i n H i m . He makes it clear i n Matthew 5:17-48 and elsewhere t h a t t h e keeping of H i s commandments must be more than j u s t t h e phys ica l a c t i o n s of keeping them. It must be i n the h e a r t . It must be a way of l i fe - -not only a way of doing, b u t a lso a way of th inkinq .

The apostle Paul t o l d us t o b r i n g every thought i n t o c a p t i v i t y t o t h e obedience of Christ (I1 Cor in th ians 10:4-5). That h a s t o do wi th obeying God, keeping H i s commandments i n our h e a r t s , no t on ly i n our a c t i o n s , though it c e r t a i n l y inc ludes our a c t i o n s .

Proverbs 3:l says , "My son, f o r g e t no t my law, b u t l e t t h i n e h e a r t keep my commandments.' Notice it s a y s 'let t h i n e heart keep my commandments." The u n i t y that w e are t o have wi th God and wi th one another through H i s S p i r i t , which is based upon keeping H i s l a w i n our hearts, m u s t be more than j u s t a c t i o n s 1 T h i s un i ty , l i k e God's law, must become a part of =--part of our very na ture . ou r se lves t o God i n mind and heart . J e s u s no t on ly kept God's law--He agreed with it. Because H e and t h e Father were one, it was Jesus' l a w a l so . He kept i t , l i v e d by it i n s p i r i t and i n truth--not grudgingly, nor wi th ind i f f e rence . H e wholeheartedly, a c t i v e l y suppor ted , promoted and be l ieved i n it. It was p a r t o f H i m . So it must become w i t h u s .

Unity is a s t a t e of mind. It is a way of th inking . And w i t h God's people t h a t u n i t y is based upon God's p e r f e c t law. You m i n i s t e r s need t o set an example of u n i t y not on ly i n a c t i o n s , b u t i n a t t i t ude . You c a n ' t j u s t "go along" wi th t h i s p o l i c y OK t h a t , whi le d i s p l a y i n g disagreement t o c l o s e f r i e n d s . If you have a s i n c e r e lack of understanding, then you have a r e s p o n s i b i l i t y t o 1) communicate it t o your s u p e r i o r s a t headquar te rs , and i f you s t i l l d o n ' t understand, 2) keep it y o u r s e l f , fol lowing P a u l ' s admonition i n Romans 16:17-18. B u t you should go t o God i n prayer , ask ing H i m for t h e understanding. I n Psa lms 111:10, w e are t o l d , "A good understanding have a l l t hey t h a t do H i s commandments." Obedience comes be fo re t h e understanding. Understanding is a product of obedience. S i m i l a r l y , when w e suppor t God's government i n t h e Church on a p a r t i c u l a r matter, praying f o r understanding whi le c a r e f u l l y avoiding d i v i s i o n , God w i l l g r a n t t h e understanding.

Unity is t h e r e f o r e based a l so upon f a i t h . To have u n i t y w e m u s t have f a i t h i n God's a b i l i t y t o l e a d H i s Church and t o work through H i s government i n it. When f a i t h sags , so does uni ty . When f a i t h i n God is s t rong , so is u n i t y among those who have it. And from where does f a i t h come? From Jesus C h r i s t , t h e v ine , wi th whom w e are t o be one.

L e t ' s deeply a p p r e c i a t e t h i s upcoming Passover s e r v i c e . How blessed w e are t o have the prec ious blood of our Savior app l i ed t o us! How merciful God is t o have called u s and t o have granted u s repentance from the way of dea th t o t h e way of e t e r n a l l i fe !

God cont inues t o lead u s . Telecast response l a s t weekend was t h e second h ighes t ever--45,290 weekend calls! The Work Cad is doing through H i s Church marches forward. As our ways p l e a s e God, H e w i l l b less us. You m i n i s t e r s must be champions of God's Word, both i n word and deed.

Thank you f o r your p raye r s and your l a b o r of l ove ,

Prom Canada The WATS l i n e s continued t o be very product ive during t h i s month. Mr. Richard Ames' second telecast produced a t o t a l of 747 ca l l s , up from h i s f irst telecast of t h e previous week,which brought j u s t over 490 calls. Perhaps the review of the f i r s t program coupled with the one on Easter caused more people t o f e e l they should ca l l in . I t is encouraging t o see more people respond i n Canada, a s they have t r a d i t i o n a l l y been r e l u c t a n t t o do so.

For the year-to-date, w e have received 3,629 ca l l s ,which is 135.3% over 1985.

a i r l i n e is holding its own, a t r i b u t e t o t h e c a r r i e r ' s tough s e c u r i t y precautions.

What is most f r igh ten ing about t h e explosion aboard TWA F l i g h t 840 is t h e apparent ease with which t h e t e r r o r i s t eluded a i r p o r t s e c u r i t y measures r- at Cairo a i r p o r t . This may have been due t o t h e bomber's u s e of a hard- to-detect p l a s t i c explosive. L a s t Friday, an explosives exper t showed a nationwide TV audience on CBS news how innocent-looking some p l a s t i c explosive devices are . H e d isplayed s e v e r a l bombs which looked t o be nothing more than t h i n p ieces of cardboard, e a s i l y carried i n e i t h e r a suitcase o r a briefcase. Most amazingly, he next displayed seve ra l yards of what looked t o be twine-again, a p las t ic bomb. Such "twine" could be used t o wrap a " g i f t " and be carried r i g h t aboard a plane. Of course t h e explosive would s t i l l need t o be detonated. B u t t h e expert showed t h a t t he appropr ia te timer-detonator was so small it could a c t u a l l y be concealed i n s i d e an ink pen.

Another CBS r epor t claimed t h a t Libya had r ecen t ly employed a t l e a s t a dozen U.S. and Canadian explos ives expe r t s i n t r a i n i n g would-be t e r r o r i s t s i n bomb-making techniques. An American, who was -one of t hese i n s t r u c t o r s , was asked what t h e Libyans wanted him t o teach. H e rep l ied : "HOW t o make home-made bombs, de fea t s e c u r i t y , a s s a s s i n a t i o n techniques and th ings of t h a t nature." Asked what type of people were h i s s tudents , he r ep l i ed cu r t ly : "Assassins." H e f u r t h e r said t h a t t h e Libyans used some East Bloc personnel as teachers , b u t p refer red t o u s e Americans because of " the advanced technology w e have i n explosives and e lec t ronics . " The motives of t h e American and Canadian teachers f o r doing such i n s t r u c t i o n , he added, "was money."

Because of t h e increased u s e of p l a s t i c explosives , t h e U.S. Federal Aviation Agency is spending $12 mil l ion t h i s year on explosives de t ec t ion research, One poss ib l e countermeasure is called "thermal neutron ac t iva t ion ." But t h e u s e of hard-to-detect p l a s t i c explosives is not t h e end of t h e s to ry . We a l s o reported t h a t a Pentagon s e c u r i t y expert had succeeded twice i n car ry ing a dismantled Glock 17 through t h e human and mechanical weapons d e t e c t o r s a t Washington's National Airport . After our January repor t , Glock and t h e Austr ian government began i s su ing r e f u t a t i o n s i n p re s s r e l e a s e s and telegrams t o major publ ica t ions . Their concern was presumably heightened by t h e f a c t t h a t Glock is at tempting t o m a r k e t t h e p i s t o l i n t h e United States. One Pentagon spokesman had t h e nerve t o t e l l a j o u r n a l i s t t h a t he doubted t h e ex i s t ence of t h e "Pentagon s e c u r i t y expert" w e said had tested t h e Glock 17 aga ins t a i r p o r t s ecu r i ty . For t h e record: The man who conducted t h e unof f i c i a l tes t is t h e Pentagon's t o p exper t on counter- te r ror i sm, Noel Koch, t h e p r i n c i p a l deputy a s s i s t a n t defense secre ta ry .

Glock t o l d anyone who would l i s t e n t h a t tests under t h e - supervis ion of unnamed " o f f i c i a l s e c u r i t y specialists" showed

c l e a r l y t h a t "both scanners and d e t e c t o r s can i d e n t i f y t h e Glock 17," which has a mass t h a t is 83 percent s tee l and only 1-7 percent p l a s t i c . The poin t , of course, is t h a t t h e metal p a r t s which are de tec t ab le , don ' t look l i k e gun parts, while

- Roch proved t h i s twice with _a dismantled Glock 17.

I n f a c t , Rep. Mario Biaggi, D-N.Y., set t led t h e matter beyond any n i tp ick ing . One of h i s aides hand-carried t h e most recognizable part of a Glock 17--its p l a s t i c pistol-shaped frame-through a Capi tol H i l l metal de t ec to r without having it spot ted. The rest of t h e p i s t o l ' s p a r t s , mostly metal , were i n h i s b r i e f c a s e and went through t h e scanner without being i d e n t i f i e d . [ I n a tes t conducted by ABC N e w s , a person car ry ing t h e metal p a r t s w a s stopped, b u t only because t h e scanner operator wanted a c l o s e r look a t t h e metal. Operators are now being educated as t o t h e p r o f i l e s of t h e p a r t s . The q u a l i t y of t h e opera tors is now t h e e s s e n t i a l f ac to r . ] Meanwhile, both t h e Federal Aviation Administration and t h e Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms suddenly decided t h e problem of p l a s t i c handguns deserved a t t e n t i o n . The a v i a t i o n agency has s i n c e learned of a t7.S.-made, a l l -plast ic p i s t o l , which is not y e t on t h e marke t b u t which would be undetectable by a metal-scanning device....

How se r ious is t h e problem of a gun t h a t can bea t t h e a i r p o r t s e c u r i t y machines? Some FAA f i g u r e s should make c l e a r t h a t i t ' s deadly ser ious . Since mandatory screening procedures went i n t o e f f e c t a t U.S. a i r p o r t s i n 1973, more than 33,000 firearms have been de tec ted and almost 1 4 , 0 0 0 related arrests have been made. Officials estimate t h a t a t l e a s t 113 hi jackings have been prevented. Footnote: Glock t o l d u s he has never so ld h i s p i s t o l s t o Libya, and has no ongoing negot ia t ions t o do so. But o ther sources t o l d u s t h a t , without Glock's knowledge, Khadafy w a s t r y i n g t o buy t h e guns through in te rmediar ies i n Aus t r ia . . . .

Apparently one "advantage" of t h e part-plastic gun is t h e fact t h a t it is considerably l i g h t e r than an al l -metal gun. The Glock 17 is a l ready t h e standard sidearm of t he 25,000-member Austr ian army. Nevertheless, t h e manufacture of t h e Glock 17 and its c e r t a i n successors , noted t h e communications d i r e c t o r of the National Coa l i t i on t o Ban Handguns, sets "a t e r r i f y i n g example of progress outpac ins common sense."

Y e s , t h e s tuden t s have indeed discovered t h e campus crusade of t h e '80s. One such s tuden t is Amy Carter, 18-year-old daughter of t h e former pres ident , an ant i -apar theid a c t i v i s t and f requent arrestee a t Brown University i n Providence, mode Is land. On t h e West Coast, t h e issue is extremely v o l a t i l e a t (where else?) t h e Universi ty of Ca l i fQrn ia , Berkeley (or Berserkley, as some of its o lde r f r u s t r a t e d alumni c a l l i t ) . L a s t week, Berkeley experienced its most v i o l e n t confronta t ion s i n c e t h e anti-Vietnam war days of t h e 1960s as 120 campus and l o c a l police ba t t led with an t i -apar the id demonstrators. This l a t e s t campus cause celebre drew t h e a t t e n t i o n of a Washington-based writer f o r t h e South African newspaper BUSINESS DAY, who wrote on March 7:

Up and down t h e l ibera l es tab l i shment ' s east coas t ( t h a t is t o say, from Pennsylvania t o Maine--Maryland and po in t s south don ' t q u a l i f y ) t h e ch i ld ren of t h e well-to-do are taking time out...to erect symbolic shantytowns on t h e i r co l l ege lawns and otherwise bu l ly t h e i r elders i n t o d ives t ing themselves of s tock i n f i rms t h a t do business with SA. Indeed, t h e r e seems t o be no corner of t h i s region 's academic groves t h a t has not been -decorated with a p l a s t i c and cardboard scu lp tu re i n t h e manner of Crossroads. Even t h e Massachusetts I n s t i t u t e of Technology has one-and a disappoint ing structure it is, too. You would have thought MIT could a t l e a s t have made its o f fe r ing geodesic.

The bu i lde r s mean w e l l , of course, and it must be tremendously morale-boosting t o be ab le t o spend a winter n ight camped ou t i n t h e snow f e e l i n g s o l i d a r i t y f o r t h e vict ims of apar theid. The class of '86 may have no d ra f t cards t o burn, poor s o u l s , b u t a t least they w i l l be able t o t e l l t h e i r ch i ld ren they stood f o r something before heading of f t o Wall Street and t h e execut ive o f f i c e s of Dow Chemical Corp.

Twenty years from now, it is un l ike ly t h a t t h e i r ch i ld ren w i l l f e e l any t h e less proud o r envious of t h e i r pa ren t s when they consider t h e SA those parents helped c rea t e . After a l l , t h e present genera t ion draws no l i n k between its own pa ren t s ' opposi t ion t o t h e Vietnam war and t h e t o t a l i t a r i a n wasteland t h a t is now Vietnam.... - Such the arrogance of t h e w e l l - in ten t ioned American l ibera l , e s p e c i a l l y i n his l a r v a l staqe.

In Berkeley and elsewhere, a good number of those a r r e s t e d include non- s tudent "professional p ro te s t e r s . " In the 1982 book "Roots Radicalism," by Stanley Rothman and S. Robert L ich ter , t h e authors note t h a t "reformers and radicals have h i s t o r i c a l l y depended upon youthful exuberance and idealism" t o se rve t h e i r own p o l i t i c a l ends. Young people have always been subject t o such manipulation. Even A r i s t o t l e complained t h a t t h e young "have exa l t ed not ions because they have not y e t been humbled by l i f e o r learned its necessary l imi ta t ions . . . . They would always r a the r do noble deeds than u s e f u l ones: their l i v e s are regulated

more by moral feeling than by reasoning .... They love too much, hate too much, and the same with everything else. They think they know everything, [which] is why they overdo everything." (This quote is from page 3 of the Rothman-Lichter book.) As Benjamin Hart wrote in the April 11, 1986 NATIONAL REVIEW:

You see, the rioters and flag-burners of the Sixties are now - the college deans and tenured faculty at America's major universities. They are bitter about the country's sharp move to the right, and are especially bitter about the increasing conservatism among the nation's young people.... The college establishment is a last enclave of Sixties-style leftism.... America's real battlefront [is] the college campus.

How true. Marxism and other forms of far-left radicalism is a growing force at American universities. There are now more than 500 courses on- the philosophy of Marxism being offered. Marxist-oriented teachers form powerful factions in the idea-oriented disciplines such as the humanities, political and social sciences and economics. Marxist-style ideas are also behind the popularity of new activist courses such as ethnic, women and gay-rights studies. "About 250 ethnic studies programs exist on campuses," wrote David Brock in the December 12, 1985 WALL STREET JOURNAL, "and women's history, written mostly by neo-Marxist feminists, is an accepted fixture at many schools."

Speaking of causes and struggles, the people of New Zealand, reported the April 11 NATIONAL REVIEW, might soon be in for their share:

The latest addition to the roll call of sinner states is New Zealand--"a white racist state," according to the country's National Council of Churches, which even wants the country renamed "Aotearoa" [the older Maori name for the islands1 .. . . Maori "activists" are currently goinq 5 Cuba liberation techniques.

study advanced - This charge by New Zealand's liberal church hierarchy must come as a surprise to the country's Prime Minister David Lange, who has done h i s best to cultivate ties with the Third World, and especially to terminate all sporting links with South Africa.
