Musings from Mike
I get a feeling every so often the people are beginning to wonder if spending the money, time, and anxiety that we do on the Advent and Christmas season is ‘worth it’ or a good idea. I have to admit that I do think we take the supreme gift that God has given to all of us and turned it into a marathon of gifts, events, and things to do. But every so often I get reminded in the Christmas Story that there were lots of people who were not sure that God had a good idea. Have your Son’s messenger be born to a charming old couple with no kids? Have your son be born to an unmarried virgin? Make a multi-day trip from your home to your husband’s family just in time for the birth? No place to have the baby? All those visits with a first time Mom and Dad? There are many, many places that we can raise an eyebrow at what God is up to. But here is the bottom line, in the first Christmas God lead people through their confusion, doubts, and dismay to become part of the story of the Messiah. That makes me trust that God will help you and I to work through our calendars, everything going on, and even the noise in our own heads to get to the stable and give our praise to the Son of God. A blessed Advent season of preparation and a beautiful Christmas to you and yours.
Shalom,
Pastor Mike

Please Don’t Forget… Hams or Turkeys are still needed for the Loaves & Fishes Christmas distribution on December 16th. The Christmas Giving Tree is on display in the Narthex of the church, with tag containing the ages and info of children who are served through the Loaves & Fishes program. If you can help by purchasing a gift or two, please take a tag from the tree, add your name to the sign-up sheet and please remember to return the gift before December 15th, so they can be given to the families on the 16th. Target or Walmart gift cards are being collected for the children who will be attending the Strengthen Our Sisters dinner on December 14th. Our hope is to give each child a $20 gift card, and if you can help with this, it would be greatly appreciated. Any question see Debby Smeilus.
I would like to thank Linda Meilan for heading up the funeral luncheons for so many years and for her hard work and dedication to
our church. Thank you also for helping in the transition for me to take over. Thank you to the ladies in the Naomi circle for all their help as well. And a super big thank you to Julie Artim and Carol Byra for offering to co-partner with me in this very important mission going forward. What a blessing I am so grateful. Let Jesus always be our guide,
~ Love, Linda Bosland

ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS 2019 AT BUTLER UMC Advent is the season of preparation and Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ the Word of God coming into our world and into our lives. We will mark the seasons with special times of worship, devotion, mission, and service. Please mark your calendar and let the Spirit lead you to the events and places that will best help you to prepare and celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus.
- Advent Scripture Reading Group There are 24 days from the beginning of December to Christmas Eve and there are 24 chapters in the Gospel of Luke. For this Advent you are invited to read a chapter a day to help you experience the whole story of Jesus as told by Luke. On Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. (Dec. 2, 9, 16, 23) you are welcome to gather with Pastor Mike to talk about your questions and discoveries as well as praying for each other on the journey.
- Christmas Caroling – Sunday, December 8th, 3 p.m. Meet at the upper parking lot of the church to travel to the homes and facilities of folks that could use a few Christmas Carols and greetings during the holiday. This is an event friendly for all ages and after we carol for a while we gather in fellowship hall for a light dinner and conversation together.
- Strengthen Our Sisters Dinner – Saturday, December 14th, 4:30 p.m. Strengthen Our Sisters is a special time of hosting dinner, games for the kids, and sharing gifts with the Moms and Children of this shelter who supports women and single moms at a difficult time in their lives. You can contact Debbie Smeilus [email protected] or 973-519-5558 to see where your help can best be used in setting up, running, and cleaning up from this very special dinner.
- Loaves and Fishes Christmas Food and Gifts – Monday, December 16th The
opportunities for you to serve would be in donating foods for Christmas meals, taking a gift tag from the Christmas tree in the Lobby of the Sanctuary and returning a wrapped gift by December 15th. Also, if you could help out with the food distribution on Monday the 16th that would be much appreciated. You can contact Debbie Smeilus at: [email protected] or 973-519-5558 to learn more.

What is Christmas ?
Every time a hand reaches out to help another, .... that is Christmas. Every time someone puts anger aside
and strives for understanding, that is Christmas.
Every time people forget their differences,
and realize their love for each other that is Christmas.
May this Christmas bring us closer to the spirit of human
understanding, closer to the blessing of peace!
